Dollyak:
Why did she study in polytechnic in the first place? Really curious. This is not something to celebrate i'm sorry. Relatively speaking, the standards of polytechnics anywhere in the world are appalling. In the context of a world class uni must add.

You are probably a University freak - all theory and no practical. This is why Nigeria is where it is today industrial wise. You need technology to drive industrialisation. Technology is what is taught in Polytechnics, Monotechnics and Technical schools. So a granduand of Polytechnic is not less, education wise, than his/her University counterpart.

Looking at the facts below, it is clear that the governor of a State that boasts of the highest number of Professors is either an educated illiterate or is mentally retarded. This is TREASON, pure and simple. Cambridge dictionary defines treason as: (the crime of) showing no loyalty to your country, especially by helping its enemies or trying to defeat its government:. PMB should apply the law at the right time.

Nairaland / General / Manslaughter: Ibinabo Fiberesima Gets N2m Bail by Musaspp(m): 1:43pm On Apr 08, 2016
The Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal on Thursday granted a N2m bail to embattled ex-beauty queen, Ibinabo Fiberesima, who was sentenced to five years imprisonment for manslaughter.

The appellate court, in a two-one split judgment, decided that Fiberesima’s application for bail had merit.

Justice Samuel Oseji, who read the lead judgment, granted the N2m bail Fiberesima with two sureties in like sum.

The court said the two sureties must be resident in Lagos and must each swear to an affidavit of means.

Justice Oseji said he was inclined to exercise discretion in Fiberesima’s favour in view of her health and because there was no record that she had jumped bail in the past.

The judge said it would amount to injustice if after Fiberesima had been kept in prison, the Supreme Court later, after about three to four years, decided that the five year jail term imposed on her should be set aside.

Justice Sidi Bage, who presided over the proceedings, aligned himself with the lead judgment but the third member of the panel, Justice Y.B. Nimpar, dissented.

Justice Nimpar said the ill-health grounds upon which Fiberesima anchored her application for bail was untenable.

The judge noted that there was no record before the court that Fiberesima had suffered any complication since February that she underwent surgery for breast cancer and April when she brought her application for bail.

Besides, Justice Nimpar said there were adequate medical facilities in the prison to cater to her health needs, adding that the prison hospital could also give her referral for consultancy in the event that she has any condition that could not be taken care by the prison hospital.

Nairaland / General / FRSC Can’t Be Speed Limiter Sole Distributor – Court by Musaspp(m): 1:36pm On Apr 08, 2016
A Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday ruled out any plan by the Federal Road Safety to make itself the sole distributor of speed limiter which it had directed must be installed in all vehicles in Nigeria.

Justice Evoh Chukwu, in a judgment, held that the FRSC lacked the legal backing to either dictate the price of the device or determine where vehicle owners must procure the device.

He however held that under the National Road Transport Regulation 2012 enacted on the strength of the FRSC Act 2007, the commission had the power to direct that vehicle owners in the country should install speed limiter in their vehicle.

The judge ruled, “I am inclined to hold that in enforcing the provision of the law, the directive by the 1st defendant (FRSC) that speed limiter be installed in vehicles in Nigeria is within the purview of its powers.

“What I must state here is that the Act never entitled the 1st defendant to limit the scope from where ordinary Nigerians can buy the speed limiter nor did the Act allow them (FRSC and its agents) the monopoly to install the device at an astronomical price of N36,000 on innocent Nigerians, who are already groaning in abject poverty.”

The FRSC was said to have proposed to rake in N900bn from the imposition of the speed limiter on an estimated 25 million vehicle owners in the country.

The judgment delivered was in a suit by the Registered Trustees of the International Human Rights and Anti-corruption Society, represented by Dr. U. O. Udofia.

The defendants in the suit were the FRSC, Standards Organisation of Nigeria, National Automotive Council, National Union of Road Transport Workers, and the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.

The plaintiff, through its lawyer, E. A. Egbebu, had argued that the FRSC lacked the power, under any known law, to impose the speed limiter, dictate the price and where it could be bought.

It also contended that the commission’s prescription that the device would cost N35,000 and would be installed at N1,000 by its accredited agents was illegal.

The group further contended that the FRSC’s decision to impose the speed limiter on an average of 25 million car owners in the country, with the estimated revenue of N900bn was “actuated by corruption and abuse of human rights as the 1st defendant (FRSC) was not established to generate revenue for government.”

Justice Chukwu, had earlier in his judgment, struck out the notices of preliminary objection filed against the suit by the defendants, who had argued that the plaintiff no locus standi to institute the suit.

The judge also struck out the name of the AGF from the suit on the grounds that it was not a necessary party to the case.

Nairaland / General / Family Of Three Die In Inferno Caused By Telephone Sparked Explosion by Musaspp(m): 12:58pm On Apr 08, 2016
Tears flowed on Wednesday on Adebiyi Street in the Somolu area of Lagos State after a 65-year-old motorist, Alhaji Kamourudeen Ajibade, and his daughters, Shakirat and Wuraola, were burnt to death in an inferno.

The three were killed after fire gutted their apartment around 11pm on Tuesday.

Shakirat,19, had finished her secondary school education and was an apprentice in a graphics and design company, while 15-year-old Wuraola was still in Senior Secondary School 3.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Kamourudeen was to celebrate his election as the chairman of a motor park in Onipanu on Wednesday before the tragedy struck.

He was said to have returned from work on Tuesday with a 50-litre jerrycan of fuel which he kept in the corridor at the back of his apartment.

It was learnt that he was transferring part of the fuel to a smaller container when his phone rang.

The phone reportedly ignited a fire, which engulfed the victim.

His two daughters, who heard his cry for help, were said to have rushed there, but were trapped as well.

Their corpses were said to have been removed by officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service.

When PUNCH Metro visited the scene, residents, family members and friends, were observed lamenting the deaths.

A neighbour of the victims, Ogbechie Enoch, aka Baba Soldier, said he had a chat with the Badagry, Lagos State indigene a few minutes to the incident.

He said, “Around 9pm, power was restored to the area and I went inside to watch news update.

“A few minutes after, the electricity went off and I came outside and saw him. I was lamenting the situation in the country and how things were getting worse. He said we should keep hope alive.

“He went back inside. It was some minutes after, around past 10pm that I heard people shouting, ‘Fire, fire, help, help’.

“The residents trooped into their house and started combating the fire. I gave them my fire extinguisher to save lives, not knowing the lives were already lost.”

PUNCH Metro observed that only the corridor of the victims was affected by the fire.

Partially burnt naira notes also littered the floor.

A tenant, who did not reveal his identity, said, “Alhaji is a motorist and he has two vehicles. One was bought just a few days ago to celebrate his election as the chairman of the park at Onipanu/Fola Agoro today (Wednesday).

“Because there was no power, he decided to transfer fuel from a 50-litre jerrycan to a smaller container. As he was doing this, his phone rang and that was how the fire started. He shouted for help and his children rushed out to save him, and were choked to death by smoke.”

A relative said she had a premonition of the incident, adding that had Kamourudeen told her of the party, she would have discouraged him.

Some friends of the victim were seen by PUNCH Metro making contributions to raise funds to take the corpses from the mortuary.

It was learnt that the family planned to bury the three corpses on Wednesday in accordance with Islamic rites.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, said the fire was caused by the fuel which was stored at home.

“Unfortunately, three people died, which included the man and his two children. The fire was caused by storage of petrol,” he said.

Open Letter To Muhammadu Buhari: First, Ensure Police Reform

Naij.com guest author Ini Akpan Morgan (bottom right corner) says he has a number of ideas to share with the president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari (top right)

What is my business with Muhammadu Buhari being president?

No Nigerian of my age would deny the divine intervention we had in the death of Sani Abacha, whose democratic experiment in 1997 made it possible for lists of winners in general elections to be forwarded to Sumner Karibi Dagogo-Jack, the then-chairman of the National electoral commission of Nigeria (NECON). Before the recent general elections, an equal magnitude of such electoral fraud still persisted. This translated into a situation where Abacha was “endorsed” by all five registered political parties, known rhetorically to the late Bola Ige as the “five leprous fingers”, as the only presidential candidate who should singularly fly their flags. Nobody minded the differences in ideology, manifestoes and derivative principle of the fallacies they professed. The fear of Sani Abacha was the beginning of political wisdom.

As a follower of Nigerian politics, I saw a Nigerian “Muammar Gaddafi” who was already in the making; definitely, the Libyan leader was a good friend of the late head of state. I was scared for Nigeria. Now that we have had 16 years’ experience at democracy, we can clearly see how pathetic was our political direction. Nobody’s death should be celebrated, though my own scripture says the day of a man’s death is better than the day of his birth. I only saw in that event an opportunity for Nigeria to get her politics right with a fresh start.

Nigerians owe God the gratitude for Abdulsalami Abubakar, who chose not to consolidate for himself the political power that feely fell to him by consensus in June 1998. He is the mastermind of our present-day flourishing democracy. I use this opportunity to thank President Goodluck Jonathan for conceding his defeat at the latest presidential elections, against taking the advantage he had to scuttle the best elections Nigeria has ever conducted, saving our unity and brotherhood.

Nigeria has been stagnated by the fear expressed by her leaders — that of discussing the basis upon which the unity of our nation should be built. This is why we are yet to have a nation. Still, we have carefully managed our external operations as a country: the expression of a sustained socio-political geography recognized in the comity of nations. The rest, which is entirely internal, we base on individual convenience, stealing from each other by tricks, as practiced by our political class.

Refusing to discuss the basis of our unity is the beginning of the corruption we find in our laws: the very reason we are struggling with the rule of law and our political behaviours. This is the reason why political office-holders have resisted our institutions’ strength to continually exploit them for themselves, perpetuating their abandonment and the sustenance of their ill-health. This is the reason some Nigerians and ethnic jingoists believe President Jonathan was selfish for “selling off” the PDP to the APC and conceding in the recently-concluded presidential election. This is also the reason some of our governors behave they are doing the people they govern a favour by using a little part of our commonwealth that falls to them for development and pocketing the rest. Nobody cares how the ordinary Nigerian feels or what he will suffer if the right things are not done. We are also under obligation to thank God for who President Jonathan is, being the manifestation of divine favour and political possibilities; nevertheless, he was one leader who clearly showed he was not prepared for leadership when he refused to see when his time was up in 2011.

I am a patriotic, passionate, and law-abiding Nigerian. I am very emotional about Nigeria. I watched the inauguration of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as President in 1999 on television in Maraba, near Abuja, with tears of joy in my eyes, induced more by Abdulsalami Abubakar, who intermittently raised his clasped palms to the people while Chief Obasanjo waved with both hands in his “hypo-white” agbada, with a green gold-embroidered cap to match. I saw the retiring general as my own big hero and looked forward to the prospering Nigeria he was handing over to Olusegun Obasanjo. I truly wished Obasanjo well.

Although nothing really happened in his first term, apart from the privatization and commercialization of government businesses which was anchored by Atiku Abubakar, howbeit that none of those acts clearly and cleanly affected the common Nigerian. Obasanjo was busy “Ajalaing” the world over, asking for “debt relief” and seeking foreign sector investment. He actually advanced our economy in a way, but he became a monster towards the end of his administration, raising very many hurdles and setting up blocks to cause friction for the succeeding administration’s smooth taking off (like what President Jonathan is presently doing, and I am tempted to say “Like godfather, like godson”). During this period, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo abused every inch of the law he swore to protect and harassed every Nigerian whose advice he saw as adverse to his personal interest. I recall his shameful political hunting of Atiku Abubakar for refusing to support the desecration of our constitution and the truncating of his “third term” ambition. This event led me to believe that Atiku Abubakar would be a better leader than Obasanjo could ever be. I also realized the monster Chief Obasanjo built the PDP to become, making the party churn out the highest number of leaders in a single administration. He made the PDP in his image, and I hated the party.

I have a political interest but I have never been a party man. I have expressed partisan interests but I have never given my allegiance to any political party. While Chief Obasanjo was bullying everyone he saw (Bola Tinubu, Solomon Alamiesiegha, Peter Fayose, Victor Attah), at a certain point, the governors took their report cards to Obasanjo in Abuja where he nationally televised and personally assessed them. I supported and enjoyed this, but it did not erase the impunity those acts were, because the president is not empowered under our extant laws to supervise state governors. On one occasion he sacked the director general of FAAN on national television for fidgeting when answering questions before him.

When President Yar’Adua assumed the president’s office, he concentrated on dealing with political and economic issues. But time was limited for him to look into the PDP structure Chief Obasanjo left. Had Yar’Adua not died, he may have handled the distortions in the PDP better than President Jonathan has tried to do so far. The PDP has never been as divided as it is presently. I predict that if its trending destruction is not checked and halted, the Labour Party might come out stronger in the near future. I would have given this chance to the APGA, but the party’s body language is that of exploiting and exploring political convenience. The way the party lost all the seats in the National Assembly elections and overwhelmingly won all the seats in the State House of Assembly election in Anambra state is suspicious.

It was for the reason of President Jonathan that I voted for the PDP in all elections in 2011, joining majority of “our people” to vote “our own”. It was not long that I realized that the one we called “our own” had his own. His ethnic sentiments and considerations ascended their peaks when he administered the Presidential Amnesty Program as an Ijaw resettlement and empowerment program. The Amnesty fund was monetized and tucked into the pockets of Ijaw youths. I rejected President Jonathan as “my own” from then on and have not regretted my decision.

I yearned for change even before the emergence of the APC as a political party and their slogan. I prayed for President Jonathan’s good health, the good speed and peace of his administration. But, breathing the stench he called “fresh air,” I knew he was not prepared for leadership. When his wife held me up in traffic for almost three hours on a street in Port Harcourt, I prayed that the National Assembly found a reason to impeach him. I have never hidden my rejection of President Jonathan’s administration. So it was with much enthusiasm that I followed every step Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu took in the build-up to the merger of all minority parties for the single purpose of dislodging the PDP, and the rest is now a familiar story.

Buhari assured me when he received his Certificate of Return that he will give all Nigerians a voice in his government. I therefore can contribute to governance because he sees all Nigerians as his own. This is the privilege I don’t want to lose. At this time, I am expecting the president-in-waiting to start delineating his policy direction, to draw up the lists of his teammates and the offices they would oversee rather than occupy. I hereby submit my contributions to the president-elect.
Policy direction

Police and Civil Defence Corps reforms

This must be a priority for the incoming administration. Nigerians are tired of security men treating them as a conquered people. The situation where whips are used on citizens is not acceptable. We pray to see the Nigerian police and civil defence corps who respect the civil populace and treat them with human dignity during investigations. Police/civil defence training must elaborate on the superiority of the civil populace over those who wield guns, imbibe civil morality, behaviour and national patriotism. The process of investigating a citizen must ensure his fundamental human and civil rights. Questioning to unearth truth must be intelligence-based and by intellectual engagement.

Torture of citizens in whatever form should be seen as a failure in the relationship between the police and the citizens. A police census should be carried out whereupon policemen of lower rank are documented at the nearest divisional police headquarters (DPH) in their local government council areas, with their village heads authenticating them as indigenes. This would ensure their deployment to established units within their own local government areas.

The police census for lower ranks will weed out mercenaries planted in the Nigeria police by our political elites. Every community must be responsible for every lower rank policeman they produce. No police officer below the rank of an Assistant Superintendent of police II should be allowed to work outside their LGA of origin. They should be posted to oversee the operations of PUOs and PWOs, as will be recommended under this heading.

Bail must be free, not in words but in actual implementation. Bail issues should be removed from all DPHs. Bails in cases which get to the level of the DPH should be granted only by a court of law.

The concept of community policing must be redefined by the Buhari administration. Police duties must start and end with the ordinary people. If the people are not involved in policing, it cannot be community-related; it can only be establishment-promoting. I hereby propose a “command and staff” structure, for the purpose of effective logistics administration. The proposal embraces additional two formations to the police command structure: police unit offices (PUOs) relative to electoral polling units in the country, graduating to the police ward offices (PWOs), and to the present structure of DPHs.

In the proposed “command and staff” structure, the police high command takes charge of the “command” aspects of administration, and the local government councils/police, community relations committees (PCRCs) take charge of “staff” administration. Normal police activities and deployments will be the responsibility of the high command to the level of PUOs and PWOs, while police recruitments and remunerations at the level of the PUOs and PWOs will be handled by a police community relations committee (PCRC) in every ward of the country supervised by divisional police officers (DPOs) or their representatives in conjunction with the LGA administrations in the areas. Members of the PCRC shall include traditional rulers, youth and women leaders, DPO representative, and police officers in charge of the PWOs in the various wards of the LGA.

Funding should be provided from the security votes of each state government.

Authenticated and documented policemen would be posted to their own units and wards of origin. Where the number of policemen is in shortfall, local youths should be recruited and trained in police training schools for both formations.

While recruitment at the levels of PUOs and PWOs would be handled by the PCRCs, training, deployment, promotion would be handled by the police high command.

A patrol truck furnished with communication gadgets and an imprest account should be deployed and made available to each of the PUOs and PWOs. This can be handled by the states government.

Training and remuneration of officers will be sponsored and undertaken by the various local government councils and police divisions in the area through e-payment. This will be ensured by a direct release of funds to the LGAs. Commercial banks would be encouraged to open branches in all the LGAs in the country. Operational issues would continue to be under the existing police administration.

The benefits are the following:

employment generation for local people in the Nigeria police, Civil Defense Corps, and banks;
halting of urban migration, checking of homeless miscreants and illegal immigrants;
scaling down the pressure on and abuse of community policing;
giving LG councils added funding responsibilities;
checking the abuse of security votes by state governors;
boosting construction industry with the prototype building of PUOs, PWOs and banks in every relative polling unit, ward and LGA all over the country. This would make Nigeria the biggest construction site in the world!

The present police high command structure encourages waste of resources. The restructuring of the police should come with the streamlining of the police hierarchy:

The Inspector General of police
The Deputy Inspector General of police (administration)
The Deputy Inspector General of police (operations)
Assistant Inspectors General of police (administration) for the six geopolitical zones
Assistant Inspectors General of police (operations) for the six geopolitical zones
This will ensure only 12 AIGs, 2 DIGs and an IGP
The commissioners of police structure can remain as it is presently, with the merging of duplicated functions.

Funds saved from streamlining the police hierarchy should be channeled into servicing the PUOs and the PWOs. It is expected that these two formations for the Nigerian police and Civil Defense Corps will employ almost two million personnel and cost about N50bn monthly, N600bn annually. This will make one security personnel from each of the security outfits to police 80 Nigerians, with a likely statistics of one armed man to seven criminally-minded individuals.

This is part one of Mr Morgan’s letter to Buhari.

Politics / 2nd Term In Office Is No Longer A Birth Right– Obasanjo READ MORE: Http://www.na by Musaspp(m): 4:50pm On May 20, 2015
Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has tasked president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to prioritise all sectors as he assumes office in the next 9 days.

Speaking at a press conference organised as part of events to mark African Day in Germany, Obasanjo urged Buhari to take all sectors in need of attention very serious, noting that none can be discarded in favour of the other.

When asked which areas he would want Buhari to prioritise, he said; “If I say employment, what of power, security, education? If he takes up one and ignores the other, do you think he will complete his first tenure in office.”
2nd Term In Office Is No Longer A Birth Right– Obasanjo

Urging the president-elect to deliver as he has promised, Obasanjo stated that the outcome of the recently held elections in the country is an indication that securing a second term in office “is no longer a right.”

In a report published by Daily Trust, the ex-president noted that, prior to the recent elections, most leaders in the country and on the continent thought that, securing another term in office was a birth right, “in fact it was considered impossible to lose.”

He said: “The people’s wish prevailed and I am proud to say it here that Nigeria got it right this time around.

“The elections may not have been perfect, but it was a reflection of the people’s wish. Even where there were manipulations, it did not affect the results. Attempts to rig did not yield any positive results. I think with what happened, people will no longer be eager to manipulate elections.”

Obasanjo urged people in leadership positions to be mindful of their actions adding that: “ When we started the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) many people thought and even voiced it, that the party will rule forever, but look at it today. It is only 16 years down the road and the PDP is already an opposition party.”

The ex-president further revealed that, the development was very good for Africa, because “if anything goes well in Nigeria, that is a quarter of the continent going well.”

Meanwhile, the ex-president had before now recommended a way forward for the president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari in governing a new Nigeria.

Politics / APC Will Soon Discover Who Buhari Is – Prominent Cleric by Musaspp(m): 4:36pm On May 20, 2015
A prominent cleric in the South-south region, Bishop Emma Isong, has said that President-elect Muhammadu Buhari will surprise most of his supporters in the APC because they have no idea who the former Head of State is.

The cleric however Buhari assured that Buhari will tackle corruption and get Nigeria back on track.

He said: “I think Nigerians should now sit up in the days of Buhari and get ready to queue up on line and get ready to declare their asset and also get ready to go to work on time; they should get ready to speak the truth and drop sentiment and the people I am pitting most are the sycophants of the APC because they have no idea who this Buhari is, they just wanted to win election. It is now after APC victory, they are going to discover who Buhari is.”

Bishop Isong added that most APC chieftains would be in for a shocker with President Buhari.

“APC chieftains need to know that Buhari is an exceptional person. I am not saying that an angel has come but a very different politician. Don’t forget that Buhari is not a politician, I see him as a reformist; that broom logo of APC fits him, he is a sweeper and all those who are carrying that broom should also get ready because Buhari when sweeping would not want to check whose documents are on the floor; so people that carry broom should be ready for the broom now because the broom may even sweep their owners.

“Those are the people I pity. I do not pity anybody than those that are thinking and assuming that Buhari has come and their story may soon change because I see a man who said and I quote him “I am not coming to just rule Nigeria but I want to come and change and fight corruption.”

The cleric whose several predictions have often come to passed added “there is going to be a panic, first month from May 29 to June 29; there is going to be that panic I will even advise those who are rushing to go and get appointment from Buhari’s government to wait a little bit and let the yam get cold so that they can eat well because very likely those that rush for the next appointment may soon be committing political suicide. The first thief to go is the one police will catch.”

It would be recalled that before 2011 poll, Bishop Isong had predicted that Goodluck in the name of President Jonathan will transmit through 2011 elections and what will remain after the Goodluck will be Jonathan.

The cleric while clarifying his words recently said Jonathan in the Bible does not rule. In the Bible Jonathan always handover; he always concede power, he always congratulate David.

The incumbent president will hand over his affairs to Muhammadu Buhari on May, 29.

Crime / Gunmen Abduct OAU Lecturer In Ekiti, Kill Driver by Musaspp(m): 12:45pm On May 11, 2015
Gunmen on Friday evening abducted a lecturer of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Dr. Femi Omisore, on his way to attend a funeral at Oye Ekiti in Ekiti State.

Our correspondent gathered on Sunday that Omisore, a lecturer at the Department of Environmental Design Management of OAU, was abducted in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, on his way to attend the ceremony.

His captors, who were said to be armed with guns, were said to have trailed him for a while and his driver tried all he could to avoid being overtaken by the hoodlums.

On catching up with him, the hoodlums were said to have killed the driver out of anger and forced Omisore out of his car before he was taken away to an unknown place.

The gunmen, it was farther gathered, fired several shots at the petrol tank of the lecturer’s car and ensured that the car caught fire before they left the scene.

The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, OAU chapter, Dr. Caleb Aborisade, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone.

Aborisade said, “According to the information I gathered from his family, Dr. Femi Omisore was kidnapped on Friday evening. He was going for a funeral ceremony in Oye Ekiti.
“I learnt that a member of his department was burying his father in Oye Ekiti and he was traveling there when he was kidnapped.

“The kidnappers use his telephone to call his wife this morning ( Sunday) and they demanded N70 million ransom.
“We are not politicians, we are running our union with stipends from our members and where do they expect us to get such amount.”

He appealed to Omsiore’s abductor to release the lecturer, saying the family was not rich and could not afford to pay such a huge amount of money.
The abduction was also confirmed to our correspondent on the telephone by the Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Osun State Polytechnic, Iree chapter, Mr. Dotun Omisore, who is a nephew of the abducted lecturer.
The ASUP chairman expressed concern at the way lecturers and members of their families were becoming targets of abduction.
Politics / Nigerians Need To Be Patient, CHANGE Cannot Happen Overnight - Buhari by Musaspp(m): 12:35pm On May 11, 2015
The President elect, Mohammadu Buhari, on Sunday said the change Nigerians are expecting cannot happen overnight.

Buhari also said the incoming administration will, in the short term, lay emphasis on agriculture and mining to deal with the challenge of youth unemployment.

He said this while receiving in audience members of some northern groups, led by Alhaji Maitama Sule and the Northern Elders Forum, in Abuja, on Sunday.

According to him, the task before the northern leaders, especially the clergy, is to help sensitise the public that the change they desire and voted for, cannot happen overnight.

He pointed out that it took 16 years to destroy the nation’s economy, noting that the nation earned more within the last 16 years under the Peoples Democratic Party, than it did since 1914, but that most of it was frittered away.

He said, “The biggest message is to try and persuade the people that it is not possible to change the state of affairs now. It took 16 years and those 16 years, most of you know it better than myself, Nigeria earned revenue more than what it earned from 1914 to then.

“You know that we used to have Nigeria Airways, Nigeria National Shipping Line, Nigeria Railways. Where are they now? Where is the infrastructure? Between then and now and what we earned in-between and what is on the ground.

“That is how efficiently how the PDP managed Nigeria in the last 16 years. Now we have invariably inherited all the problems, especially in the north east.”

Buhari added, “So, you have to convince your constituencies that you have virtually arrived at the wrong time and that they have to temper their expectation with some justice towards the leadership.

“I think whatever has to be deployed especially in the churches and mosques, this is the quickest way to communicate this to the ordinary people, continue to remind them if all the things I said in all the states I visited.

“We picked three fundamental problems. The first is security. The country has to be secured before anything can be put in place and then the economy. The fact is that more than 60 per cent of the Nigerian population are youths and most of them, whether they have been to school or not, are unemployed and this is the biggest danger if we don’t know it.”

Politics / Buhari Will Probe Me, All My Aides And Ministers - Jonathan by Musaspp(m): 12:13pm On May 11, 2015
President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday gave an insight into the fate that awaits him under the incoming government of the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), saying he and ministers as well as other aides who served under him would be persecuted.

He said he and his ministers would have hard times because of some critical decisions they took while in office.

Jonathan also looked back at all the benefits that had come his way as a Nigerian, saying he was ready to pay the supreme price for the nation.

The President spoke at a thanksgiving and farewell service organised in his honour at the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Life Camp, Gwarinpa, Abuja.

Jonathan who was accompanied by his wife, Patience, said considering what God had done in his life, he wished he could dance like the biblical King David but he kept missing his steps whenever he made attempts.

He said only a few Nigerians within his age bracket were as lucky as he is because he had not suffered any lack, not because he is hardworking but by the grace of God.

He said after reflecting on the benefits which included the scholarships he enjoyed in school and the various political offices he had occupied, he should be able to do anything in the interest of the country, including paying the supreme price.

He added that he is leaving office of the President as a fulfilled and very happy man.

Jonathan said, “I want to thank God for what he has done for me and my family. I wish to dance more than David, if I tried to dance, I missed my steps.

“I have all the reasons to thank God. Very few of those in my age brackets have been that lucky. All through my education I was on government scholarship. I have not suffered lack not because I am hardworking, but by God’s grace.

“When I look at the whole picture of my life up to when I became the President of this country, I say that if soldiers and police officers that have not received 0. 5 percent of the benefits that I have received from the state can lay their lives for this country, I should do anything in the interest of Nigeria, including paying the supreme price.

“As long as live, I will continue to do my best for the state because the state has helped me as a person.

“I have to thank Nigerians especially my state for giving me the opportunity to serve as deputy governor and the whole country gave me the opportunity to serve as Vice President and then President, first was to complete the tenure of the late president and later serve as President from which I am exiting now as a very happy and fulfilled man.”

Saying that hard decisions have their own cost, Jonathan said he was ready to pay for some of the costly decisions he took while in charge of the country.

He said experience had shown him that people would at a time desert anybody who takes tough decisions like he did.

He said he had always hold the belief that more of his friends would desert him as time goes on.

He recalled the story of the last ruler of apartheid South Africa who was divorced by his wife for accepting to abolish minority rule in the country, and said jokingly that he hoped his wife will not also divorce him after he might left office.

Mrs. Jonathan replied with a shout of “Nooooo”.

Her response was greeted with a loud applause by congregation members.

The President also prepared the minds of the ministers and aides who served under him, saying though times await them all.

He said, “I believe there are reasons for everything. Some hard decisions have their own cost, no doubt about that.

“That I have ran the government this way that stabilised certain things, the electoral process and other things that brought stability into this country. They were very costly decisions which I myself must be ready to pay for.

“Some people come to me and say this or that person, is he not your friend that benefitted? Is it not your government that this person benefitted from? But this is what the person is saying.

“But I used to say that worse statements will come. If you take certain decisions, you should know that those close to you will even abandon you at some point.

“And I tell them that more of my so-called friends will disappear. When FW De Clark took the decision to abolish minority rule in RSA, even his wife divorced him. I hope my wife will not divorce me. But that is the only decision that has made RSA to still remain a global player by this time. If we still had that minority rule there, by this time, nobody will be talking about RSA.

“If you take certain decisions, it might be good for the generality of the people but it might affect people differently. So for ministers and aides who served with me, I sympathise with them, they will be persecuted. And they must be ready for that persecution.

“Quoting Tai Solarin, may your ways be rough. To my ministers, I wish you what I wish myself. They will have hard times, we will all have hard times. Our ways will be rough.”

Jonathan however said he was happy that the ordinary people appreciate what he did and that, according to him, is the most important.

He said it was not what the elite or the privileged few talk or say about his administration that matters but what the majority of the Nigerian public think about his actions and inactions.

He expressed delight that he came to Abuja with his family peacefully and they are returning peacefully.

The President thanked the church and Nigerians for standing by him even at his most difficult times.

He said even on the March 28 presidential election which he lost to Buhari, there were many people who supported him nationwide.

Despite exiting the Presidential Villa, Jonathan promised that he would continue to pray for the country and the Buhari administration.

He said the outcome of the election went that way because God wanted it to be so for a purpose.

“Even for the election, we had people who supported us all over the country but things went the way they did because God wanted it that way for a purpose.

“We will continue to pray for the peace of the country and for the success of the incoming administration.

“When the country is in good shape, people benefit. When things are going well, people are happy. You don’t need to know Mr. President or Mr. Governor.

“The issue is not about Jonathan or Buhari or any other person. The issue is how the government functions: stability, buoyant economy that will enable Nigeria to move forward and live happy. That is our interest, that is my prayer point.

“All religious groups should pray for the country,” he concluded.

Jonathan thereafter requested that his favourite hymn, “Stand by me” be sung again.

He said apart from inspiring him, the hymn makes him aware of the fact that whatever one does there will be storms.

He said the assurance in the hymn was that once such a person means well for the people, God will always stand by him.

Politics / Osun: Supreme Court Rules On Omisore’s Appeal May 27 by Musaspp(m): 6:09pm On May 08, 2015
The Supreme Court on Thursday fixed May 27 for judgment in the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party’s candidate in the August 9, 2014 governorship election in Osun State, Iyiola Omisore, against the election of the All Progressives Congress candidate, the incumbent Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

The seven-man panel of the apex court, led by Justice John Fabiyi, fixed the date for judgment after parties adopted and argued their respective briefs on Thursday.

Omisore, who attended the hearing on Thursday, urged the apex court, through his counsel, Dr. Alex Izinyon (SAN), ‎to set aside the concurrent judgments of the two lower courts.

The former Osun State Deputy Governor and his party had filed the appeals against the decisions of the Justice ‎ Justice Gana Mshelia-led panel of the Court of Appeal ‎in Akure, which, on April 2, 2015, affirmed the earlier judgment of the Osun State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal.

The Justice Elizabeth Ikpejime-led‎ tribunal had on February 6, 2015, dismissed Omisore’s petition for lacking in merit and affirmed Aregbesola’s victory.

Izinyon, who filed two separate appeals on behalf of Omisore and the PDP, challenging the decision of the Court of Appeal, urged the Supreme Court to‎ allow his appeals and dismiss the cross-appeal filed by Aregbesola and the APC.

One of the appellants’ appeals emanated from the main judgment of the Court of Appeal while the other appeal and the respondents’ cross-appeal arose from the decision of the appellate court on the admissibility of a d‎ocument in favour of the petitioners at the tribunal.

But the three respondents to the appeals – Aregbesola, the APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission – who were represented by different lawyers, separately urged the court to dismiss the ‎appeals.

Politics / We Have 1.2bn Litres Of Petrol In Stock, Says NNPC by Musaspp(m): 3:45pm On May 08, 2015
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and its downstream subsidiary, the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC), said they had 1.2 billion litres of petrol in stock.

This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by Mr Ohi Alegbe, Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Department, NNPC.

The statement stated that the figure translated to 31 days sufficiency, going by the 40 million litres daily consumption of the product in the country.

It explained that the Managing Director of PPMC, Mr Haruna Momoh, made the announcement in Abuja.

It quoted Haruna as saying that “21 additional vessels laden with petroleum products are in offshore Lagos waiting to berth.

“NNPC has made adequate arrangements to ensure energy sufficiency in the country and reassured motorists that the noticeable queues at the filling stations would thin out in the days ahead”.
Momoh said that the NNPC also had 21 days sufficiency of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) otherwise known as diesel and 18 days sufficiency of Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK), otherwise known as kerosene.

He said that as part of efforts to ensure petroleum products’ sufficiency and distribution, the NNPC embarked on aggressive Reception Depots rehabilitation in 2011.

“As at today, 18 depots out of the 23 depots have been fully recovered with the exception of Makurdi, Yola and Maiduguri due to the activities of pipeline vandals,” he said.
The PPMC MD disclosed that the corporation suffered petroleum products losses worth N40.8bn through pipeline vandalism in 2014.

He said that no business could survive such a loss and still remained a growing concern.
Momoh said there was a marginal increase in pipeline vandalism, stressing that in 2013, the corporation recorded 3,517 vandalised points but in 2014, the figure increased to 3, 774.
He said that “as at today, 97 pipeline vandals are undergoing prosecution”.

Momoh expressed regret that since the cases started a few years ago, none of the accused persons had been convicted for economic sabotage.
He called on Nigerians from all walks of life, especially those living in communities where the pipelines run through, to protect them in national interest. (NAN)
Politics / Why I Will Fight Corruption, Insecurity, Unemployment - Buhari by Musaspp(m): 3:21pm On May 08, 2015
Nigeria’s president-elect, General Mohammadu Buhari on Thursday reechoed that the high level of indiscipline and corruption in government and other social places were the main reasons why he has pledged to fight corruption, insecurity and unemployment head on when sworn in as president.

According to him, the worse was the electoral fraud and judicial compromises which had characterized the courts.

Buhari spoke against the background of the manipulation of electoral process which he said played out in the last general elections.

Buhari who was particular about Akwa Ibom state was delighted when the governorship candidate of the APC in the state, Umana Umana who led a delegation of the Akwa Ibom people including Senator Ita Enang, the senate committee chairman on Business and Rules to pay him a congratulatory visit in Abuja informed him that he had gone to the Election Petition Tribunal to challenge the result of the governorship election in the state.

Recalling his experience at the courts, Buhari said that he would strengthen the process to prevent the subversion of the will of the people in future polls.

Politics / Re: Yorubas Are The Problem With Nigeria - By Sanusi Lamido Sanusi by Musaspp(m): 3:17pm On May 08, 2015
Honestly, this is a good food for thought. As much as I agree that every Nigerian is first a tribalman before being a NIgerian, we should begin to play down the tribal sentiment for us to move forward. The Igbos should play their politics right and forget the biafran agenda. The other major tribes are suspicious that the Igbos still nurse this agenda. It is now up to the Igbos to convince the other tribes to trust them in the Nigeria project.
