Nigeria: 0809uchoose Draws 8 Million Nigerians to Etisalat's Web Site in One Week ETISALAT Nigeria has announced an influx of visitors to its web site as Nigerians seek to reserve special numbers on Etisalat's network. The website reportedly has witnessed more than eight million hits in less than one week with thousands already reserving their special numbers on Etisalat's network. Speaking on the development, Etisalat's vice president of marketing, Wael Ammar, said "we are excited that Nigerians are reserving their numbers already in thousands. This is indeed a unique opportunity to join an outstanding network and enjoy free airtime for life." He went on further to state that the company had expanded the technological backbone supporting the unique 0809uchoose website to cope with increased traffic and ease the registration process for would-be subscribers. Etisalat's 3-in-1 welcome package to subscribers was announced last week and tagged 0809uchoose. It gives interested Nigerians and subscribers of existing mobile networks an opportunity to choose any of the one million lines available within the 0809 8 000 000 - 0809 8 999 999 range. Apart from the gold, silver and bronze range of numbers which attract a nominal charge, 95 per cent of the numbers are free and so are the sim cards. All subscribers who reserve and eventually get any of the one million numbers available will also get 300 seconds of free airtime each and every month (which can be used on and off net) for the rest of their life time as long as they remain on the Etisalat network. http://www.telecom.paper.nl/news/article.aspx?id=231249&nr= @ ya'll that complained about not being able to register, hope you can see the traffic the website receives. The Nigerian government is set to introduce tough jail terms for persons found guilty of committing financial crimes through the use of mobile phones, internet and Automatic Teller Machines (ATM), This Day reports. The jail terms range from 5 to 14 years, the new measures are contained in a Bill to prohibit fraud in all electronic transactions in the country, sponsored by Senator Ayo Arise . The Bill, which has gone through the first reading in the Senate, is entitled: “A Bill for an Act to Provide for the Prohibition of Electronic Fraud in all Electronic Transactions in Nigeria and for other Related Matters.” The Bill prescribes a seven-year jail term for, and in the case of second conviction, a 14-year jail term for the offence of intercepting electronic messages, e-mails and electronic money transfers. According to the Bill, “Any person, who unlawfully destroys or aborts any electronic mails or processes through which money and or valuable information is being conveyed, is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for seven years and upon second conviction shall be liable to fourteen years imprisonment.” It also outlaws the unlawful possession of or forging of credit card, debit card, smart card, ATM card or any other related electronic payment system devices whether or not such devices are fully or partially loaded with funds. Any person found liable would have to cool off in jail for a period of seven years. The Bill also states that: “Any person, who being employed by or under the authority of any Bank or other financial institutions (who) either directly or indirectly unlawfully diverts electronic mails, with the intent to commit or omit any act or order to benefit directly or indirectly, is liable to imprisonment for seven years or a fine of five million naira or both.” The practice of sending viruses or computer worms or computer programme with the intention to damage or manipulate a computer record or obtain other records or date belonging to the Government, Educational, Research or any Financial Institution is a crime and would attract a 7-year jail term or a N5 million fine, according to the Bill. However, any person who deliberately spreads false information that could threaten the security of the country or that is capable of inciting the general public against the government through electronic messages would be liable on conviction to a 7-year imprisonment or N5 million fine or both. Those whose pastime is to send pornographic messages through the internet to other computers may also be heading for a tough time as the Bill has prescribed a jail term of 1 year or a fine of N250,000. The Bill specifically states: “Any person who, knowingly, sends pornographic images to another computer, by way of unsolicited distribution, shall be guilty of a misdemeanor; and, upon conviction, shall be sentenced to 1 year imprisonment or a fine of 250,000.00 Naira or both.” |

Engineers from Google and High Tech Computer (HTC) spent three years developing Android software and handsets before the launch of the G1 by T-Mobile on Tuesday, an executive from HTC said. Executives from both companies started talking about a collaboration as long as five years ago, but those discussions didn’t turn into anything substantial until later, said John Wang, chief marketing officer of HTC, in an interview early Wednesday in Taipei. “Google makes software. They needed a hardware partner,” he said. HTC engineers remain at work in Google offices today. The companies showed off the results of their work on Tuesday in New York City, with top executives from Google, HTC and T-Mobile present. The G1 handset, with a touchscreen dominating most of its face, will first be available in the U.S. on Oct. 22 for US$179 with a two-year voice and data service contract. The key to the new handset is the Android software, an open source OS and loads of applications that are already available. The mobile phones and software are designed to work with a lot of current Google services, including Google Maps and Google Maps Street View, as well as YouTube. HTC believes working with Google on the Android project gives it a big advantage over other mobile phone makers. Handset builders Motorola, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are all currently listed as members of the Open Handset Alliance, the group of corporate supporters Google formed around Android. The companies are believed to be at work designing Android-based handsets but none of them have announced anything yet. https://www.itnewsafrica.com/wp-content/uploads/g1_Tmobile.jpg HTC plans to make more of the handsets. “This will not be our last Android phone,” said Wang. “This is just the beginning.” He declined to comment specifically on whether new Android-based handsets were already in the works from HTC. |
