oyb:
Thanks for the link. i will definitely check it out.

to all:
In general, here is my problem with the whole christian vs muslim thing, which has incidently displayed itself on this counter post:

1) When fitna was released on live leak et al, death threats were made and the video was pulled down. If oyb has said, al mouftin's video was released a week after fitna, why haven't any death threats been made against al mouftin et al?

2) In Wilders' movie, muslims were referred to as muslims. In Al mouftin's, you hear the word, "Zionists". In other words, Muslims, generally speaking, can pretty much say anything they want but not christians, or am I missing something?

3) Speaking from my experience living in Nigeria, in the North, a christian, generally speaking, must live within certain limits and at a time was supposed to live under Sharia law, which by the way is not the recognzed law of Nigeria. In the south however, Northerners (mostly muslims, let's face it) can live wherever they want and pretty much do whatever they want. Another case of double standards? You be the judge.

4) I am not a catholic but the pope quotes a pope of old about Islam, the Danish draw a cartoon, and the Islamic world gets riled up yet Ahmadinejad continuously speaks of the destruction of Israel and no one is supposed to say or do anything. Double standard perhaps?

The Bible says, I believe, that the descendants of Ishmael and Isaac will always be at each other so I guess I just have to accept this. I personally have no problem with both religions co-existing peacefully. However, again, based on my personal experiences, it seems christians are to be tolerant of other religions while muslims on the other hand aren't. I am speaking in generalities obviously. Of course, it is the extreme wings of both religions that are responsible for what we are seeing today.

Yeah, the lack of interaction is where I took my eye off the ball. I have been thinking about opening up the source code to others so they can muck around with it and make the site better as I have too busy of late. Truth be told, WOA is my first PHP site and so I was focused more on learning PHP as opposed to offering features. I will note this for future projects (Igwe, see how constructive naijafan's comments are? cool)

It is quite possible that yes, the advertising didn't have the appropriate effect. Better yet, it could be that the target audience isn't one to patronize the channels I advertised on. Might also be that we would rather prefer community websites that have to do with relationships and sex as opposed to what could help us all develop. Who knows? As they say, nothing ventured, nothing gained. I thought it was a good idea, but I guess not. Even Seun, if you've read his bio, started various online ventures before he stumbled upon the success that NL is.

My consolation is that there are at least 150+ members all of whom get a monthly newsletter with tips to succeed in web dev, many have written to tell me that they are getting calls/emails from people who got their information from the WOA website (whether they have actually closed deals is another matter. I am yet to inquire about such) and most importantly, I have met (albeit virtually) a lot of smart and dedicated web developers many of whom, Lord willing, I will work with in one capacity or the other.

As far as WOA goes, I will keep looking at the glass half-filled. Even if the site gets 0 visitors a day, I will still keep it up. I think it is worth it, even if, assuming it were a business, I were losing money.

There, I cut off your head and left a little piece dangling so your head doesn't fall off. How does it feel? grin

DISCLAIMER: I am old school and use HomeSite but having said that, am open to change cool

From talking with various developers, it appears DW in general is the de facto IDE with respect to web development. One turn-off to me, which the same developers I have talked to agree with me on, is that there is a tendency for DW to output bloated code. This is more often than not the result of an inexperienced developer who doesn't know how to use DW efficiently. Herein lies my general dislike for DW.

From outputting JS and CSS inline to the use and abuse of tables, I have in the past brushed aside DW. I have seen it used in code view and have been wondering why many developers don't use it. I wonder if it is due to in ability or plain laziness.

So again, DW appears to be the de facto standard and won't get any arguments from me in that regard. Having said that, until I see more and more sites use it in an efficient manner, I probably won't jump ship just yet.

If you are wondering why I am not the "sinner to cast the first stone", well trust me, I have tried - as I have told many on here, I bought a DW MX book back in 2002 which I found stashed in my bookshelf about a month ago: Never opened, with the receipt in tact. At least I bought a book, granted it's now 5 years old, which is a start. Who knows? I might just go buy another book wink Hey! I least I have DW MX 2004 installed on my PC (though I have never used it) which is probably a good start cool

aah! My bad. Sorry about that. Wow! for live leak to take it down means this is serious business.

As I always say, truth is not something you take with panadol. The truth hurts. For them to send death threats means there is some truth to it. Or at least that is how I see it.

Oh well. Unzip away folks ! grin

which is quicker?

coolClicking the first link, going to the site, clicking the "fitna" link and pulling up the video that is already streaming on another's server,

OR

downloading a 69MB zip file (which may take forever, depending on internet connection), storing it somewhere, unzipping it, locating it, and then running it?

hmmmmm. Besides, the movie is only 15 minutes long regardless of which method is used. cool
Webmasters / Re: Test Your Web Programming Skills by my2cents(m): 11:28pm On Mar 29, 2008
That is why I said it is vague.

I think it is better to say, "here is some xyz code. Figure it out and display the answer". That way, even if it is a language I am not familiar with, at least, I can dig into it and try to figure it out. Right now, I think people will spend more time trying to figure out what language than what it is doing. In the first place, how do you know people will just up and use the language from your question? When all you have is a hammer, everything to you is a nail. As such, it becomes a turn off, but thatz just me.

As for the guru part, I don't think answering any one question makes you a guru. It may mean you know more on topic A than someone else does, but it doesn't make you a guru. Remember, just as there are things you are better than others at, there are things that others are better than you at. It's a fact of life.

So again, I think it's best to state what the language is (something tells me that, based on previous conversations with you where you have stated your love for certain things, it is jQuery tongue) then ask for an answer. I think that will serve us better.
Webmasters / Re: Php Question by my2cents(m): 10:45pm On Mar 29, 2008
I blv u hv to create the folders yourself. As for image names with unique numbers, I want to think that when the user uploads their image, it will be uploaded with the name that they chose (that exists on their end).

Since you already have folders which I presume would be named uniquely (maybe the user's username), all you should be concerned with is how to display the images.

I hope this helps.
Webmasters / Re: Test Your Web Programming Skills by my2cents(m): 4:18pm On Mar 29, 2008
So mambe, I think this question is rather vague cos it is not using a standard programming language (as in, if you don't have/or are familiar with, what it is, there is no way of knowing).

- the $ tells me that it is one of the prototype framework flavors (scriptaculous et al). If it isn't, then it is one of the ruby-like flavor of languages. I haven't used Ruby so I can't say, but how knows? wink

- It is most likely getting the value of 'b' (as in getDocumentById), checking if it is empty, appending your name to it as a sibling and hiding the DOM node, albeit slowly (as in one of the scriptaculous, jquery, etc combo effects). In other words, the page it is on most likely starts off with your name showing, then it slowly fades out.

C'est bien? cool
Webmasters / Re: What Is The Meaning Of Web 2.0 by my2cents(m): 4:12pm On Mar 29, 2008
Look at this this way mambe:

Just like AJAX, LAMP, WAMP, 4GL, etc it is just a buzz word without which it would get no traction. It's just referring to the next generation of websites/apps out there. As you said, you can pretty much define what that next generation is for you. It could be a community, or any app that you decide to come up with on your own.

It is basically any website/app that brings together people from various walks of life and which allows such people to do things online that they would normally do at a physical social gathering.

I have never saved images in a DB so I couldn't answer the path part. I do have a question though? How are you saving the image in the DB? Just in case, I think you need to save it as a BLOB.

That is the extent to my knowledge with respect to storing images in a DB, since as I said, I haven't done it myself. I hereby yield to others to take it up from here.
Webmasters / Re: What Is The Meaning Of Web 2.0 by my2cents(m): 8:50pm On Mar 28, 2008
Without looking at the wiki (which is what you actually should be doing, but I digress wink), I will say that the term has more to do with concepts than the technologies used to accomplish those concepts. In other words, it is not about ajax but about how ajax could be used to enhance the user experience with respect to the concepts, on such web2.0 sites. So tag clouds, community, carousels, tagging as well as the ridiculous (like logos with reflections) all fall into that category.

Personally, I am sick and tired of the "web 2.0" craze. In the states (or at least where I live), it is not uncommon to see a job description where "must be familiar with the web 2.0 paradigm" is a minimum requirement. Such a description is usually written by someone in the personnel department who has no earthly clue as to what the term actually means. I usually just skip descriptions and go to the next one.

As always, my 2 cents.
Webmasters / Re: Sql Query Help Needed by my2cents(m): 8:18pm On Mar 28, 2008
Off the top of my head, I would imagine that your result is stored in an array (I am thinking one of the mysql_fetch_* functions here) and based on which result you want you can then reference the index/indices of the rows you need.

I have never seen a retrieval written your way (I am not saying it is wrong. I am just saying I have not seen it written your way) so please allow me to write it the way I probably would:

<?php
$result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM books, authors WHERE books.author_id=authors.authors_id"wink;
if (!$result) {
echo 'Could not execute! ';
exit;
}
$row = mysql_fetch_row($result);

echo $row[0]; //the first row of the result, e.g. email
echo $row[2]; //the second row of the result, e.g. name
echo $row[6];
echo $row[n]; //to nth row of result
?>

Then to get multiple records, you do the same thing, but in a loop (this may be where mysql_fetch_array comes in). One thing I like to do is insert an "echo" after each line I want executed and then add an "exit" after each step (declare query, exit. get results, exit. etc).

Again, this is off the top of my head. I haven't ran this code so there is no guarantee that this will work, but hopefully you get my point.
I hope this helps.
Webmasters / Re: Php Question by my2cents(m): 7:39pm On Mar 28, 2008
I guess Mambe has pretty much said it all. Your question would have made more sense if you hadn't started but since you already have something going, stick with it and hope that you have no reason to refactor OR refactor if you have nothing better to do cool

In the future, try to think out (and ask questions where applicable) various possible solutions to a problem and determine the best solution before implementing. Refactoring definitely costs more in the long-run than if you had actually sat down to come up with the best possible solution upfront.
Programming / Re: What Is Wrong If African Coders Build An Online Payment System For Africans? by my2cents(m): 6:55pm On Mar 28, 2008
Within the Nigerian domain, I believe there exists a company called Interswitch which, though expensive, is pretty established. Many companies are using them as well. There are also others I am sure. Rather than reinvent the wheel, why not see if you can extend upon what they have already done?

What concerns me is that, given the way Nigeria tends to operate, I wouldn't be surprised that the likes of interswitch have a lock on the banks and as such, those banks may not be willing to entertain your proposal.

Since you are developing something for the entire continent, perhaps the best thing to do would be to start with a small country where the bureaucracy/people are more likely to go with change than with a big country like Nigeria where "the mafia" may have already set up shop. Who knows? Based on your popularity with your pilot project, other countries would then sign on and before you know it, your product would be the talk of the town.

I think for a project like this, you need to make your intentions known to a wider audience as NL probably caters to a mostly Nigerian audience. You never know, there might be other fellow African developers thinking the same thing and who might already be at a stage more advanced than you are now wink

As always my 2 cents.

Webmasters / Re: Php Question by my2cents(m): 4:35pm On Mar 28, 2008
again, as I stated earlier, it depends on your available bandwidth and DB space. To answer your question as-is, I would say go with storing the actual images in a DB or paying an external host to store them for you and then via your SQL, you access that DB for your photos.
Webmasters / Re: Php Question by my2cents(m): 4:08pm On Mar 28, 2008
As with all thingsin life, it depends.

What kind of a site is it? Do you have dedicated servers or the regular web hosting accounts? How busy is your site? These are some of the questions you need to ask yourself b4 u make that decision.

If you are getting just a few hits per day/month and not dealing with a lot of images, I would say store just the paths to the images, for storage reasons. Otherwise, keep it as is.

I hope this helps.

no offense gibby but I think in the time it is taking you to wait for a response, you could be on your way to manually creating 3 or 4 of the same sitemaps.

Even if you were too lazy to do it yourself or have say, 1,000 pages, there are tools online that can generate the site maps for you. Besides, if your concern is SEO, you don't even have to create a sitemap technically - go to xml-sitemaps.com, generate an xml sitemap, then go to google sitemaps, register your site and upload your xml sitemap, follow directions so that google can find the sitemap and bingo! you are good to go.

I hope this helps.

Programming / Re: Help On Php/mysql Queue Process by my2cents(m): 4:20pm On Mar 27, 2008
kheme,

I could be wrong but I think he is encountering a race condition in his code. So, using the analogy of 4 cars getting to a 4-way junction at the same time, each car is yielding to the other to make a move at the same time resulting in a deadlock.

If that is the case, given the fact that I only know enough PHP to make me dangerous (as opposed to deadly), I could also be wrong in saying that PHP doesn't support threading hence my post above about using a transactional DB.

Again, I could be wrong but I think that is what he is talking about.
