Please note that the web designer will acquire first hand and practical experience on development, however he will also participate and help with basic web interface design using adobe photoshop & fireworks and also layout in dreamweaver.

Certainly the pro bono service will be compensated based upon agreement.

Those interested should paste their contact details here, from where my buddy will get the contacts he needs.

Thanks.
Webmasters / Re: Cms (content Management Systems) by my2cents(m): 5:34pm On Mar 16, 2008
Art,

Sorry, speaking for myself, I thought the issue was closed.

Be that as it may, I can't speak for wordpress. As far as Joomla is concerned, if you go to the template manager and click "edit html" and "edit css", you can make backups of those files, then modify the html/css of the originals, save and refresh your browser to see the effects.

Though there are many places to get free/commercial templates, Joomla's (and I bet others) aren't anything special. Just assume it is any regular css/html file that you are modifying to suit your needs.

I hope this helps.
Webmasters / Re: How Do I Put A Sound On A Wb Page? by my2cents(m): 10:33pm On Mar 15, 2008
what is the extension of the sound file? Is it supported by browsers? If yes, then:

1) You mentioned embed. I don't know much about flash but I think you have to add the sound file as on object and save it in whatever flash format it is before you can use the embed/object tag

2) for bgsound tag (which should be deprecated by now), I think that only supports certain sound files like .mid.

I hope these help.

Chineke meeee! I just visited the site. This is the hardest I have laughed all year. This is the one reason I love and hate Naija - poor customer service. Instead of laying it on the guy in a nice way, them jus tell am, "nyyyyuuuuuuuk".

ROFLMAO!!! All d stress wey man get since monday don vamooose cool

Question though: If he was allotted say, 10mb, how did the system allow him to exceed that? That tells me the burden of guilt should be on the hosts moreso than the guy wey get d site.

Webmasters / Re: Website Review. Express Yourself by my2cents(m): 6:25pm On Mar 13, 2008
ok buddy you are the boss, the hero, you happy now
Point of Correction: I am just your humble servant who doesn't take anything anyone says just because they say so. I am a slow learner and so need convincing b4 accepting. In this case, the argument wasn't made clear, that's all.

ITBeings:
No argument there. I for one, never use w3schools. Mambe brought it up. He was trying to tell us that in CSS, you could do this:
main1 main = new main1()

and all I am saying is that he is wrong. Again, for the record, the one thing I will say is correct in his post is this:
SEARCH THE NET -> GET A TEMPLATE THAT SUITS YOUR NEEDS -> EXTEND THE TEMPLATE -> BUILD THE PAGES -> HOST THE SITE -> ENJOY

Note: I agree with "extend the template" and not "extend the template class".
Webmasters / Re: Website Review. Express Yourself by my2cents(m): 4:51pm On Mar 13, 2008
Then I am confused cos right here, you said:
My2cent may say I am Jealous but what Iam saying is when you take a template, use your css skills to extend the template in OOP, I can say when u instantiate the template class from a professional designer, extend it to create your own class

This isn't a game to me man. I am not just the gullible type. Just cos W3schools or whoever says something doesn't mean I hv to swallow it hook, line and sinker. Just stopping here:
SEARCH THE NET -> GET A TEMPLATE THAT SUITS YOUR NEEDS -> EXTEND THE TEMPLATE -> BUILD THE PAGES -> HOST THE SITE -> ENJOY
, you would have gotten no word from me. But as it is, you are not that convincing. Sorry.
Webmasters / Re: Website Review. Express Yourself by my2cents(m): 4:33pm On Mar 13, 2008
Reuse, yes. instantiation, no. Class, no. Pseudo-class, yes. CSS OOP, no. There is no polymorphism in CSS for starters. CSS is not even a programming language for crying out loud. All CSS does is separate presentation from content.

Now, let's get back to the original purpose of this thread. cool
Webmasters / Re: Website Review. Express Yourself by my2cents(m): 4:14pm On Mar 13, 2008
I look forward to buying the book cool

There's a slight problem though, and this might prevent me from buying the book - you are yet to address my question above, which is how it applies to CSS. In other words, can I instantiate a CSS object?

I am in no way saying I am right or you are right. For all I know, you could be correct. I am just not the gullible type. I need to be convinced.

Let's not make this a pissing contest please cool
Webmasters / Re: Website Review. Express Yourself by my2cents(m): 3:51pm On Mar 13, 2008
CSS OOP? Hmm, I guess I have been out of the loop for a while.

Mambe: You mind explaining it to me? wink
Webmasters / Re: Website Review. Express Yourself by my2cents(m): 2:53pm On Mar 13, 2008
wow! I could be wrong but this is probably the first table-less design I have seen posted for review here. If I am wrong, I stand corrected. Good job on that basis alone!

A few pointers:

1) Your menus all have an id of "topPageLinkContainer". An Id is always unique. Only classes can be shared. So give each menu item a unique id.

2) You could have pushed your CSS even further by making it more semantic. For example, your menu items a list (ul and li) as opposed to divs. There is something in the web dev world called "divitis" and "classitis", 2 highly contagious web dev diseases you don't want to get. Read up on those and avoid them in the future.

3) You should reset your visited links to orange (or whatever color you used). Right now, if I click on all links, they all change to gray. This also applies to other links on the site. Right now, there is no way of knowing what page I am on, based on the clicked links.

4) You have an empty "strong" tag in your Abuja section of contacts. Remove it. If it is dynamically generated, then enclose the tags with the conditional

5) On contact page, I would increase the bottom margin of the "send" button, cos in FF, it is touching the gray bottom bar.

6) I would add javascript validation on contact page so as to prevent a trip to the server b4 being told I didn't fill a field. Given the poor infrastructure in Nigeria, I am sure your users would appreciate that.

7) I would probably increase the font size from 11px to 12px. And maybe increae the line-height too for better visibility.

8 ) I would also probably make the logo clickable so that it takes the user back to the home page.

That's it for now. Once again, good job! I look forward to more table-less design on this forum

I happened to find this article interesting and would like to suggest that each of us should cram it in its entirety and recite it to prospective clients when confronted with, "why do I need a website?" cool

Seriously though, it's a good article and I just thought I should share it with you all. Perhaps, you just might learn something new and something you can add to your sales pitch arsenal as it is written from the Nigerian perspective, as opposed to something you might have read off of google or some book written by oyibo tongue

Good luck!

Contract cost? Millions (I know how much but please respect my reservations to mentioning it on here tongue).

What was supposed to be done:
Complete redesign.

What was actually done: Just the home page.

Issues: Site only looks good in IE, broken links, broken Images, TMI (Too Much Information) on the home page, site is rarely up-to-date, to mention but a few.

Imagine!:
The person who did the site now owns a pavilion-renting business.

Webmasters / Re: Lagos Assembly Launches Website For Obama by my2cents(m): 2:26pm On Mar 12, 2008
mavtrevor we should, but:

At the taxpayer's expense? If this were some project by a private individual, I would say, no problem. But from the looks of things, this is sponsored by the state. How many millions do you think has gone into this project (from the coder, to all the kick-backs)? Considering there are bigger issues facing Lagos (roads, security, electricity, water, etc), as Afam has said, this is a misplaced priority.

Support Obama? Yes. At taxpayer expense? No.

Programming / Re: Starting Php Script Using Notepad by my2cents(m): 11:23am On Mar 12, 2008
1) To declare a PHP section, you should enclose your code within these tags:

<?php code goes here ?>

2) If you are using notepad (and this used to happen to me a lot), chances are that when saving your file, you aren't choosing "All files" under the "save as type" dropdown so that your "doc.php" is actually being saved as "doc.php.txt" (which you can verify by navigating to where you have the file saved and checking out its extension).

Try either or both of the 2 above and let us know if this helps.

Thanks,

Webmasters / Re: How About An Actual Code Review? by my2cents(m): 11:22am On Mar 11, 2008
The only thing I see in the way of achieving that goal is that a lot of people don't write their own code: they use WYSIWYG editors or, at best, copy and paste code from other sites.
Prodgal,

You know, I never thought of that. However, I still think it is possible - there are things that WYSIWYGs do (like include scripts inline on a page as opposed to in a .js file, for example) that we could advise against. Here's an example: Someone posted for review a website with a cool script I ended up using for a recent project of mine. I viewed source and found that it came from Dynamic Drive. I however didn't paste the code inline in my file. Rather, I copied it, pasted it in a .js file and included that file on my pages, thus separating the script from the presentation. In other words, if I had pasted the same code on 5 pages, it would have been a nightmare to maintain.

Your points have been well noted. I still think though that it is possible. Or at least, let's give it a try.

Webmasters / Re: What Would You Have Said? by my2cents(m): 4:25pm On Mar 10, 2008
Well, first off, if you really charged 20 times more, that implies, at least to me, that the site for which you got the contract is worth at least 200K cool Kudos!

You have to remember, the pple you met are also biz pple. In other words, they too cd be using reverse psychology on you. There is a good chance that you were the first and last person they talked to. But hey, I guess we will never know.

When faced with a similar situation, I just tell the person, "My work speaks for itself. I have the experience and the background. When I build a site, I want someone looking at it to say, "who built this?" and figure out a way to contact me and not, "who did this crap? I will sure know not to use him". I build my sites out right the first time and in addition, you are getting a ton of free stuff the others won't likely throw in for you. Also, if you have any issues with the site (over an agreed period of time), you can rest assured that I will fix it for you at no additional cost".

some clients bite and other don't. I recently got a call from someone to "erase" and redesign http://www.awapinc.org/viewer/home/index.asd/vts/design001 . She said she wanted a more "interactive" site. So I ask what "interactive" means and she says, "I want my forms to work. Right now, page links are broken. The links to paypal doesn't work. I want an online store. I just want a site better than what is there now". Now I don't know how much she was charged for the site as it is now, but I am pretty sure it was low cos when I told her my price, she was like, "really?".

Of course, I went through paragraph 2 with her but she is yet to call as I write. Maybe she will, maybe she won't. Either way, for what she wants, I can't go lower than what I quoted her cos it will involve a lot of time and effort. If I don't get the job, there will be others. That's business for you.
