Career / Top Reasons Why You Should Read The Book “72 Hours To The Job You Love" by myjobmagofficia: 12:45pm On Aug 19, 2020
72 Hours to the Job You Love is an absolute juggernaut of a book–If you are job hunting, having a hard time making the right career decision or just want to be in charge of your career, this is the book for you."

If your dream is to land a job soon, but you don’t have an idea of how to make it happen then “72 hours to the job you love” is for you.

This is a book that came out of our own exploration on the labour market and the world of work in general - not only the job market in Nigeria, but also the world at large.

It is no news that there are millions of people in Nigeria that are willing to work, but can’t seem to find a job. This book exposes readers to the realistic reasons why people can’t find jobs and practical solutions to solving the problem of unemployment.

You may ask; how does this book provide a solution to the issue of unemployment?

With our years of experience in interfacing with job seekers and employers as a recruitment company and also as a job publishing platform we can say for sure that the problem of unemployment can be tied to lack of knowledge to a large extent.

Since a great number of job seekers lack the information they need to get a job, we decided to write this book to provide job seekers with all they need to know and acquire to get a job. This book is designed to guide job seekers on their job search journey even if they are at a level of “no idea”.

Career / Myjobmag Survey: What Recruiters Really Want From Job Seekers by myjobmagofficia: 12:17pm On Apr 29, 2020
Can you remember how many job vacancies you have applied for and you are yet to land a job? Well, maybe you have lost count.

It can be quite frustrating as a job seeker to you put in your best into your job search and apply for as many jobs as possible, but you still end up being rejected.

If you are currently feeling this way, then you are not alone. According to research, one job posting receives at least 250 CVs, and only 2% of candidates that apply for a position ends up getting the job.

Looking at the data above, it is only logical for a job seeker to ask this question; “what do employers want?”

As frustrating as the job search process can be for job seekers, recruiters and employers are not as insatiable as a majority of job seekers think they are. As it is the goals of every job seeker to land a job, it is also the goal of every recruiter/employer to get the best candidates.

Since it is the dream of a recruiter/employer to hire the best candidate, they often create expectations to make their dream become a reality.

So the question now is; what do employers expect from job candidates?

To provide you with accurate answers to this question, MyJobMag surveyed 305 HR Managers to learn more about their expectations from job seekers.

The essence of the survey is to help job seekers:

1: Understand recruiters’ expectations.
2: Know where and how to position themselves.
3: Know the right tools to use.
4: How to eventually land a job.

Career / How To Write A Job Application Letter Including Template by myjobmagofficia: 4:42pm On Nov 26, 2019
Have you ever written an application letter for a job?

Many job seekers don’t always see the reason why they should write an application letter when they are applying for a job because they feel they can just send their CVs.

Your CV indeed contains all the necessary information that the recruiter needs to know about you, but sometimes your CV alone may not be able to do the job of helping you land the job of your dreams.

Your CV may do a great job of showing that you have the skills and education required to excel in a particular position, but it may not be great at telling your prospective employer that you are the best person for the job.

This is what an application letter does for you. An application letter expresses your interest in a job and shows the employer why you are the best person for the position. Writing an application letter is one of the hidden job search hacks that help you apply for fewer jobs, but land more interviews.

If you are tired of getting rejected every time you apply for a job vacancy, then you should consider writing an application letter that will help you express your sincere interest in the job of your dreams. In this article, we will be looking at:

• What is an application letter
• Importance of an application letter
• Difference between an application letter and a cover letter
• How to write an application letter
• Application letter examples

How to Write an Application Letter

1. Write an Outline
2. Write your first draft
3. Salutation
4. Use a friendly tone
5. Make it concise
6. Tailor the job application letter to the job specification and company requirement
7. Use typed and not handwritten documents
8. Use quality paper
9. Proof read
10. Write a mind blowing ending

What is a Job Application Letter?

An application letter has a broad meaning because it covers a lot of aspects. We write an application letter for different purposes. Many people see an application letter as a cover letter, but that will be limiting the meaning to just a letter accompanying another document (CV).

Well in the context of a job, an application letter is a formal document that is sent to a prospective employer to express your interest in a position. An application letter is usually sent alone and not attached alongside another document.

Most times, an application letter is not sent after you must have seen an advertised position but sent whether or not a vacancy was advertised. The application letter serves a purpose that is similar to that of the CV.

When You Should Write an Application Letter

Yes, it is true that you should write an application letter when you are interested in a job, but that is not all you consider before you decide to write an application letter.

When you see a job advert that you are interested in, you send your CV and cover letter, right? But this does not quite work for application letters. Employers will not replace the CV and cover letter with an application letter.

The approach of an application letter is different from the CV and the cover letter. You should write an application letter when the employer does not solicit your interest in the position. This simply means when there is no job advertisement or posting.

For example, if you are searching for a job and you have a list of top companies that you would love to work for, you don’t necessarily have to wait for a job posting to declare your interest in that particular job. You can simply email an application to different companies.

This is a way for you to extensively and formally introduce yourself to the prospective employer of the companies that you would love to work for.

Why You Should Write an Application Letter for a Job

Just like we have discussed earlier, there are many reasons why people write application letters. If you are actively searching for a job, then this is why you should consider writing an application letter:
• It serves as a formal introduction between you and your prospective employer.
• It can help you access hidden jobs.
• It can help you to be a step ahead of other job seekers.
• It puts you in a less competitive circle in comparison with what happens when jobs are advertised with thousands of applicants showing interest.
• It can help you boycott the process of applying for a job online, writing a resume and cover letter because most times application letters stand alone.

Difference between a job Application Letter and a Cover Letter
Many people use the term application letter and cover letter interchangeably because they think that they mean the same thing. Even though the application letter and the cover letter perform almost the same function, they are different.

An application letter is intended to stand alone, while a cover letter is usually accompanied by a CV or resume.

A cover letter will contain a brief introduction that consists of the three to four sentences about the job seekers' experience, education, accomplishment and why the job seeker feels he is the best candidate for the job. On the other hand, an application letter may have a more extensive introduction because it is meant to stand alone just like the CV.

An application letter often can substitute for a resume and, therefore, requires that the job seeker include specific information about her work history and professional competencies. A cover letter, on the other hand, should not contain too much information about the job seekers because it is merely an introduction to the resume.

A cover letter is like an elevator pitch. It is intended to capture the reader's attention enough to make the recruiter or hiring manager want to review the CV.

A cover letter is usually used by a job seeker to show interest in a job vacancy after which the job seeker will attach a detailed document (which is usually a CV). An application letter is mostly used by a job seeker to show interest in an unsolicited job.

Career / How To Answer The Interview Question "What Is Your Greatest Weakness by myjobmagofficia: 12:30pm On Nov 22, 2019
“What is your greatest weakness?”

This is arguably the one of the tricky interview questions (samples here) https://www.myjobmag.com/blog/673/top-100-job-interview-questions-and-answers that can be asked in a job interview. It is tricky because it seems like the interviewer is asking you to be honest about your flaws and in the same vein if you mention a flaw that they feel they can handle, it jeopardizes your chances of landing the job.

Before going to how to and how not to answer this question, why exactly do interviewers ask this question?

The tough answer is that they are trying to shake you up a little. The truth is that even if you have prepared to answer this question, the best of us will still prefer not to be asked this question. And really, nobody can blame you; you want to be interviewed to put your best foot forward and not your worst foot.

However, interviewers want to see beneath the prim and proper appearance you have definitely prepared for the interview. They want to know the human beneath because at the end of it all, no matter how skilful or talented you are; they will have to deal with the human. You will be working with people and in working with people, your flaws are bound to come out, whether you like it or not.

So, basically, it can be said that they are simply trying to prepare themselves for it.

But more importantly, the interviewer wants to know that you are self-aware; that you know yourself; good bad and ugly. Being self-aware is the first step to self-improvement.

You might say why bother when they won’t even get the 100% honest answer? The truth is that they know you will not tell them if you are troublesome or a rumour monger. However, the way you answer the question will also give them a glimpse into who you are.

Many candidates, unfortunately, trip over this question or take the wrong approach to answer it.

What are the wrong approaches to take in answering this question?

Taking a positive approach: You might be tempted to want to take the clichéd “I am a perfectionist” route. But interviewers have heard this so many times and therefore, will likely not fall for it. It gives off the impression that you are not self-aware or you are lying. So, as clever as it is, taking this route will probably be counterproductive.
Saying you don't have a weakness: The fact that this is a very wrong approach cannot be overemphasised; it definitely makes you come off as phoney because really, who doesn’t have a weakness?
Not having an answer: This just shows unpreparedness. If you have no answer to provide, it just communicates that you are not prepared or not quick on your feet; either way, it is not a good look.
Mention the wrong weakness: While the interviewer expects honesty, the last thing you want to do is over-share or over-confess. You shouldn’t mention a weakness that will affect your efficiency on the job; it will definitely ruin your chances of getting the job. For instance, no interviewer will employ you if you confess to being lazy or tardy.
Having said that, what are the right ways to answer the question?

The Right Way to Answer The Interview Question: What is Your Great Weakness:

Be honest: Honesty will always go along way; it might seem like the idea is to be dishonest but you are likely to buy the interviewer over to your side if they can see sincerity. Don't go making up a weakness that you don't have because it sounds good. It is important that you make a list of actual weaknesses that you have before you go for the interview because while some recruiters will be comfortable with you mentioning one, some might pluralise their question or prompt you to mention more.
Mention a weakness that has nothing to do with the job: While honesty is important, you will be a making a mistake if you mention a weakness that will affect your job. After you have made a list of all your weaknesses (you definitely have more than one), stick to the ones on your list that will not impact your job. If you are not very sure, check the vacancy details for job description and requirements, so you know what and what not to mention. For instance, you cannot be applying for a technical position and say you have issues with numbers or be applying for a nursing position and say you don't like people around. There are certain weaknesses that will obviously affect the job and shouldn’t be mentioned.
Mention how you are working on it: The interviewer wants to know that you are self-aware but they also want to know that you are improving. So, make sure that you conclude on a positive note, describing the steps you are taking to improve on yourself. You could mention taking a class, joining a group, reading certain books or just going the extra mile by challenging yourself.

Next time when you are in a job interview and you are asked this tricky interview questions, remember the tips I shared in this article on how to answer the question "What is your greatest weakness".

Now over to you, what tricky interview questions have you been asked during a job interview and how did you answer it?

Career / 46 Top Reasons You Are Not Getting Hired by myjobmagofficia: 3:02pm On Oct 03, 2019
Can you remember how many job vacancies you have applied for? Over 100 I guess.

Have you imagined why you have applied for several jobs and attended countless job interviews and you have still not been able to get a job?

Applying for jobs and landing those jobs are two different ball games, you know why?

It is how you apply for a job that determines if you would ultimately land the job or not. I know this may sound shocking because I am sure you have felt like you are close to getting a job, after sending out hundreds of your CV and probably landed job interviews that impressed you, but at the end no job!

We understand that putting in all your effort to search for a job and getting no result at the end could be exhausting because it sure takes courage to keep trying after failing many times.

Regardless of how many times you have tried to get a job and failed, one thing you should know is that job search is an intentional process, and you must be intentional about the right things you should do if you want to get results.

Landing the job of your dreams has little or nothing to do with how many applications you send out, but it has everything to do with the quality of the applications that you send out. You must learn how to apply for fewer jobs and land more interviews that will ultimately get you the job you want.

We understand that the labour market is highly competitive, but how come people are still getting hired every day regardless?

Considering our expertise and years of experience, we have come to understand that many job seekers are still not getting hired because of something they are doing wrong, or something they are not doing at all.

We know that it is the dream of every job seeker to land the job of their dreams. To help you achieve that goal, we decided to share these Top 26 reasons why you are not getting hired with you. Hopefully, this will increase your chances of getting hired.

So let’s take a look at some reasons why you are not getting hired:

Top 26 Reasons Why You May Not Be Getting the Job

1: Not Knowing your Career Path
2: Lack of Experience
3: Poorly Written CV
4: Not Writing a Cover Letter
5: No Preparation for Interview
6: Unrealistic Salary Expectation
7: Unstable Job History

Career / How To Apply For Fewer Jobs And Land More Interviews by myjobmagofficia: 1:46pm On Jul 12, 2019
Do you want to land your dream job soon?

Well, I know that every job-seeker looks forward to landing their dream job someday, but how do you apply for jobs?

I know you can’t wait to send out all your one thousand and one applications, then pray and frequently check your mail to see if you have an interview invite.

I know it is quite logical for you to think that the more applications you send out, the higher your chances of getting an interview invite? But that is not the case, because job-search is not a game of numbers.

Malorie Blackman said in one of his famous quotes that: “Life isn’t about quantity, it’s about quality” and that same principle applies to the job-search process.

In the recruitment process, quality is the core. It is about selecting the best of out of the rest. So unless your job application stands out positively it will join the rest in the pile.

Sending out thousands of poor applications in a hurry like 70% of job-seekers do will irritate the hiring manager and will end up as a total waste of effort for you.

The job-search process is an intentional, research-based, and calculated process that needs your effort. So you need to put in all your effort to make sure that the few applications you will send out will give you the required result.

I know it is not so easy to keep to rules, so I will give you tips that will help you apply for a few jobs and land more interviews.

Ready?

Let’s dive in:

1: Discover your Career path
I know you must have heard this many times, but this is the first step you need to take to tailor your applications.

I know the first question you would love to ask me is what is a career path? Well your career path is the particular channel you make up your mind to follow when you want to start searching for a job and building a career.

Discovering your career path is about deciding on the particular job field that you would love to grow and build your career in.

Many times when we ask job-seekers what jobs they are searching for, this is the response that 80% of job-seekers always give us;

“I don’t know, I have been searching for a job since *******. I just want any job, I desperately need a job”

Then most times we try not to sound rude to someone that is in desperate need, so we will then go ahead and ask the job-seeker a question like; “Okay we have a vacant opening for a pilot, are you open to take the offer?’’ then the job-seeker will respond with a sentence like; “but I am not a pilot?” but you said you can do anything.

The truth about life which also applies to job-search is that no one can do anything. Even people that are really gifted and talented have things that they do better than other things.

So as a job-seeker, you must be able to find out that thing that you love to do, something will give you fulfillment, something that you can do even without getting paid.

The funny thing about recruitment is that as much as you want to get a job, employers look forward to hiring passionate people.

So you must discover that job field that you are passionate about, then tailor your application to that particular job or career. Without this, you will be applying to every job and no job in particular.

See how you can discover your career path:

Think about what makes you happy and energizes you
Find out what you are good at
Research on different job fields and match your skills to find out the one that is right for you
Take up an internship position to discover what you are good at
Find a career mentor that can help guide you

2: Have a well-Tailored CV
As much as the CV has been emphasized, your CV is a key factor when you are searching for a job. The first contact that a prospective employer will likely have with you is your CV.

So, imagine that your prospective employer’s first contact with you is a poor CV. Most job-seekers love to have a one-size-fits-all CV so that they won’t have to create a new one when applying for a job.

So you may be tempted to use one CV for all your applications so that you can save time and send your applications faster. Using one CV for all your application will most of the time not land you an interview invite.

There is actually no need sending a CV that is neither here nor there. Employers usually write out a job description for their positions, which means that they look forward to seeing some attributes in a prospective hire. This is what you should pay attention to when creating your CV.

Your CV must be tailored to a particular job that you want to apply for, your skills and qualifications must match too.

If you are confused about how you can tailor your CV, see how you can do that:

Read the job description well, don’t just look at the title and start sending out your job applications. Take your time to read the whole application very well. When you see a job title, take your time to understand the requirements for the job.
Pick out the key requirement for the job from the job description
Match the key requirements that you have picked out and match them with your achievements, skills and qualifications.
Look out for what is missing on your CV from the job description. When you have discovered that, then you can think about transferable skills that you can emphasize in your CV.
Tweak your CV profile to match the job description: Most times when hiring managers pick up your CV, the first thing they will likely see is your profile, so you have to include the strong points in the job description in your CV profile.
For example, if one of the required criteria for a particular job is someone that is passionate about the job. You would have to include your passion in your CV profile.

If you still need help on how you can create a good CV, then you can use this CV templates for all job fields to tailor your CV for any position.

You can also use a CV checklist to be sure everything is in check.

3: Create an Impressive Cover Letter
A cover letter gives you the opportunity to create an amazing first impression to your prospective employer.

Since this an opportunity for you to tell your prospective employer that you are the best person for the job, then you must do it well to get your desired result.

To make good use of the opportunity, you have to give your prospective employer reasons to hire you for that particular position. You should convince the hiring manager that you are the best person for the job.

If you want to create a good cover letter, then your cover letter would include the following:

A heading at the top of the cover letter
A good introduction at first paragraph of the cover letter
A second paragraph that will help you sell yourself to your prospective employer (here you are selling your skills and abilities)
Talk about your vision for the company in the third paragraph
Closing paragraph (The closing paragraph should restate why you are a good fit, and finish it with a complimentary close)
Make sure you check your spellings and check for grammatical errors.
This is a good read for you if you are still not clear on how you can create an impressive cover letter.

If you are creating a cover letter for the first time, then you can make use of a cover letter template to make the process less stressful and more effective.

4: Tailor Your Application
This is the fourth step to get a job interview with less job applications. Once you have been able to discover the kind of job that you want, created your CV and cover letter, then you can go ahead and tailor your application.

To tailor your application, you can now search for jobs that are within your chosen job field, book mark them then create time to settle down and tailor your CV and cover letter to the jobs that you are most qualified for.

For instance if you find 10 jobs that are around your job field, you will have to select 2 that you are most qualified for, then use the job descriptions of those 2 to create a good CV and cover letter before applying for the jobs.

If you want to send out applications that would get you interview invites, then you should follow these steps:

Read the application process for every vacancy carefully to avoid being disqualified
Follow application instructions (hiring managers use different criteria to disqualify candidates). If the recruiter ask you to use a particular subject as the subject of your mail, then don’t fail to do that.

If the platform you are using does not have a custom application page, and you are asked to send your application to a particular email while you attach your CV and cover letter, then you should take note of the following:

Don’t send a mail without a subject that is related to job. When you send this kinds of mails, there is a possibility that your mail will not be read because the reader is not sure of the content of the mail.
You should avoid doing this if you don’t want your mail to be ignored.
Don’t attach a file without letting the person reading know that there is an attachment in that particular mail. Job-seekers are fond of doing this because they are so much in a hurry to send out many applications.
Always address the right person when you are sending a mail. Most times, job-seekers will just attach their files without even addressing the right person in the mail.
Don’t also forget to give a complimentary close at the end of your mail
Don’t ignore deadlines. Hiring managers include deadlines in their positions so that they can start the recruitment process at a particular time. There is no need for you to send in your applications after the deadline for the vacancy.

Search for Jobs at the Right Time and in the Right Places
Job-search has a lot to do with research. According to research there are best times for you to search and apply for jobs than other times to reduce competition.

If you are sending your applications when the competition is less, there is a higher probability that your application may gain more visibility than it would in a more competitive season.

Christmas is one of the best times to search for a job www.myjobmag.com, because that time many people are carried away by the season so the competition will be less.

There are different effective job-search platforms, so you must discover the platform that best suits the kind of jobs that you are looking for rather using any random platform that may not so useful to you.

Most times the best place to search for media or music jobs is to join a group. Searching for these kinds of jobs may not be the normal process of applying for a job online.

You must discover your niche and be able to find out the best job-search technique that will work for you. read the full post here https://www.myjobmag.com/blog/739/how-to-apply-for-fewer-jobs-and-land-more-interviews

Career / We Asked, You Answered: Job Search Survey 2019 Is Out by myjobmagofficia: 5:29pm On Mar 21, 2019
90.5 Million Nigerians are unemployed.

Can you count how many times you have responded to an interview invite and still did not get close to getting a job in Nigeria? Well, you are not alone.

As the rate of unemployment gradually increases in Nigeria, job-seekers face more competition searching for jobs. Now the big question here is how do job-seekers find jobs in Nigeria’s tight and competitive job market?

To help with accurate answers to the above questions, we surveyed over 3,700 job-seekers in Nigeria (that are passively and actively searching for a job) to learn more about their experiences in a job market that doesn’t favor them.

We surveyed 3788 job-seekers (that are actively and passively) searching for jobs, 1, 526 of people that took the survey are employed and a total of 2, 262 people that are unemployed. The essence of the job-search survey is to show what works in the employment market, how people get jobs and other deep insights into the industry.

Guess what we found out? https://www.myjobmag.com/blog/668/myjobmag-job-search-survey-2019-how-job-seekers-find-jobs-in-nigeria
