Obiano boosts Mission Schools in Anambra with N1.9bn

Governor Willie Obiano has continued to give shape and form to the promise of CONTINUITY which he made to Ndi Anambra during his gubernatorial campaign days as following the precedent set by his predecessor, he doled out a total of N1.9 billion, Friday, to Mission Schools in the state for the 2014 Universal Basic Education projects.

The ceremony which took place at the Women Development Center, Awka attracted the leaders of the two dominant churches in the state – the Catholic Church and the Anglican Church who mobilized members of their congregations en-masse to grace the occasion.

Out of the total sum, N433 million was given to the Catholic mission and N300 to the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion while N1.082 billion is in the custody of Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board for funding public primary and junior secondary education. Governor Obiano said the fund allocated to each mission was based on the number of schools that government had returned to them. He confirmed that funds released to the Church by his predecessor were judiciously utilized which encouraged his administration to sustain the policy.

The governor further explained that the fund would be used for the provision of infrastructure and furniture in the benefitting schools and restated his government’s commitment to delivering functional education, adding that there were already considerations on how to accommodate Pentecostal schools.

Governor Obiano also disclosed that the state government had started paying twenty percent of basic salary to teachers in the rural areas and three thousand naira to teachers that handle core subjects. He announced that physically challenged persons and junior students of technical schools are now on state government scholarship. He stated that the state government has upgraded infrastructure at the school for physically challenged persons at Isulo; provided internet facility in schools; is building perimeter fencing in boarding schools and training marshals to assist in maintaining security in schools.

The Commissioner for Education, Professor Kate Omenugha said the fund beneficiaries had secured approved work plan and that the utilization would be subject to monitoring and evaluation processes.

Most Reverend Christian Efobi, Archbishop, Province on the Niger, described the emergence of Governor Obiano as God’s answer to the prayer for sustenance of good governance in the state, noting that the implementation of his pillars of development would make Anambra a model state.
Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Reverend Valerian Okeke represented by Monsignor Basil Onwuasomba said the Governor’s performance was indicative of his resolve to make a difference in the lives of the people.

Agreed, many toes will be stepped on to get the development plan right, but it is a necessary evil. No one is guaranteeing it will go down smoothly, I doubt if it has ever been peacefully done anywhere. El Rufai pulled things down to get Abuja to its present status. Rivers state governor did same as well. So, I don't see why an error should not be rectified to get the city in good shape. Problems have always been with people not possessing necessary legal documents of their lands and properties so as to get compensated. Also not forgetting money-miss-roads that put up illegal structures, they will find it hard to be compensated and then resort to fighting dirty... but that shouldn't faze the govt. as long as it's determined.

Awka Capital Development Manual Ready

the Secretary of the Board and Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Housing and Urban Development, Willie Okafor, said the development plan for Awka capital territory has been developed into hard and soft copy prototypes, with visuals, while the aerial topography of Awka has been taken, toward making Anambra a smart city with satellite towns that will decongest the state capital.

The board members also assured that there would be no undue victimisation when they commence full operations, saying that genuine land owners would get compensated if their property are affected in the course of work.

Obiano to build doctors quarters in 37 general hospitals

Governor Obiano said while work was ongoing at the 37 general hospitals, the Onitsha, Enugwu-ukwu and Ekwulobia General Hospitals would be equipped with the state-of-the-art facilities to provide comprehensive healthcare in the three senatorial zones.

The governor also inaugurated the equipment distribution at Ekwusigo Local Government Headquarters, Ozubulu, and that of Anaocha Local Government Area at Neni.

Flagging off the distribution, Governor Obiano said the state government was spending huge resources to equip all categories of hospitals across the state to serve the people better and provide quality healthcare delivery closer to the people

The Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Prof. Solo Chukwudobelu, disclosed that the materials and equipment distributed in Ekwusigo were valued at N67 million; while the medical equipment and education materials being distributed in primary health centres and schools in Anaocha Local Government Area are valued at about N75 million.

46 percent of the capital budget is about 51 billion.. On education alone?
Good one. If well ploughed into the educational system which Obi has already revitalised, the result will be marvelous at least by Nigeria standard. Then imagine if the tempo is continued that way with subsequent administrations.... smiley

Yuletide: Obiano tightens security with ‘Operation Sheba’

After establishing himself firmly on top of the security scenario in Anambra State as the chief security officer of the state, Governor Willie Obiano has initiated a wave of new measures to deepen the security network in the state and give Ndi Anambra a chance at experiencing the first crime-free Christmas in decades.

One of the new security measures that the governor has rolled out for a safer Anambra this Yuletide Season is ‘Operation Sheba,’ a special, combat-ready, anti-crime police squad that was unveiled recently in Onitsha to give a new dimension to crime-fighting in Anambra State.

Made up of 150 elite officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force, Operation Sheba was introduced to give crime-busting in Anambra State a new and biting edge. The squad is split into three units of 50 officers each, designated to 24 hours surveillance on each of the three senatorial districts of the state. Operation Sheba comes to provide more depth to the all-conquering ‘Operation Kpochapu,’ which is credited with wiping out criminals, especially kidnappers from Anambra State in less than two months of swinging into action. Operation Sheba’s strength lies in its high mobility and penetrating surveillance that covers virtually the length and breadth of Anambra State and its rapid response ability.

Providing an insight into the formation and mission of Operation Sheba, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Hosea Karma, explained that the idea of setting up the special squad came from the thunderous ovation that trailed Governor Obiano’s security exploits during the security fundraising organised by the state in Abuja and Lagos recently.

According to him, after listening to the words of encouragement from many illustrious sons and daughters of the state who felt elated that Governor Obiano had finally secured the state, it became clear that the state government could not afford to rest on its oars and allow criminals to even contemplate a come-back.

“So, we likened those high praises in Lagos and Abuja to the Biblical narrative where Queen Sheba, after hearing the exploits of King Solomon, left her own kingdom to come and witness the greatness of King Solomon, first hand, only to discover that what Solomon had was far greater than what she had heard. We want the indigenes of the state to visit home this Christmas and New Year and find out that Anambra is far more peaceful and secure than the stories they have heard,” explained Karma. According to him, Operation Sheba is poised to raise the bar in community policing in Anambra State as it connects effectively with the officers and men of ‘Operation Kpochapu’ as well as the members of vigilance groups in the various towns to provide a round the clock data on the security situation in the state.

According to Commissioner Karma, the Anambra State Police Command has also moved to forestall any likelihood of a breakdown of law and order in any part of the state during the Yuletide Season. “We have issued directives that all commercial vehicles that have hitherto complicated the traffic challenge in Onitsha by picking passengers along the highways must desist from that practice forthwith. Henceforth, they must load their vehicles in parks and garages that the government has designated as bus stations.

This will help decongest the roads and ensure a free flow of traffic this season. We have also started arresting street traders and hawkers of all kinds of merchandise on roads and highways as they provide a perfect cover for criminals to strike at unsuspecting commuters. We shall also arrest loiterers and anyone who is roaming the streets aimlessly because they serve as decoy to criminals. We are assuring the people of a crime-free Christmas,” Karma further explained.

Although Karma has been in his present position for only two months, there is a growing feeling that he has what it takes to sustain and improve on the excellent foundations laid by his predecessor, AG Gwary.

“Within two months of my stay, we have pulled down six houses in six locations and arrested over 100 crime suspects from across the state,” Karma recalled, pointing out that his men had arrested a syndicate made up of a man and his wife that specialised in stealing babies from hospital maternity wards as well as a two-man gang that robbed mothers of their babies at gun point. Also arrested are syndicates that specialised in bank robbery and the one that robbed churches after service, carting away tithes and offerings.

The command also arrested a syndicate that tricked car-dealers into parting with their cars with false credit alerts that were programmed to hit their phones once a transaction was sealed. No fewer than 15 second hand cars were recovered from this syndicate alone.

Indeed, since his inauguration as the governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has continued to justify the faith of Ndi Anambra in him.

Smacked the baby with torch severally and still jumped on her without pity.... people can be so cruel. A lady for that matter. Mothers need to be careful with the kind of people the bring into their homes. I wonder what would have happened if there were no cameras.
Left for me, i will put that maid through what she did to that baby to know how it feels then send her to jail where she will be made to seat on an electric chair. May God heal the baby's heart so she doesn't grow up to be bitter or mean.

For the first time I have to say the parents of the baby failed it! Mr. Obiano noted that the 2015 projected statutory allocation was N8.6 billion less than the 2014 estimate, which he said reflected the decline in the state’s share of Federal Revenue Allocation.
Nawaoo, even our meagre share of the allocation gets to be cut. Meanwhile, some states keep receiving theirs in hundreds of billions. Why not take a bigger cut off those richer states and leave the poor ones the heck alonehuh

He projected the recurrent revenue earning for the fiscal year at N102.03 billion, made up of N48.4 billion expected from the statutory allocations and N54 billion from internally generated revenue
@bolded.. That is a target of about N4.5billion monthly IGR, not bad at this stage.

Bia Chino,
The flyover design should have been designed to cross the existing expressway not digging up the federal road to build the flyover along it. Of course, that is my opinion if i were the designer.Ergonomics require that a design should be functionally useful and cost effective to easily incorporate all the exigencies and all probable uses.
Bia Mazi OreMI22.. First of all, Nkpor expressway flyover was constructed by CCC, not IDC. Mind you, same CCC did the flyover along Onitsha-Owerri road at Obosi. Upper Iweka flyover was designed as such because it does not directly link any street or inner city road. So, there is no flaw in the design of the Awka flyovers. Leave the professionals to do what they know how to do best.

If the design goes your way, how do you gain access to the buildings close to the expressway since the flyover will be on a higher plane? Your suggestion can only be possible if the streets are a bit farther from the expressway just like both the one at Upper Iweka and that of Osha-Owerri Road. See the difference now?
