Nairaland GeneralFashioner Designer Shot Dead By Police Officer At Birthday Party In Lagos by Nagisa(op): 4:17pm On May 09, 2017
A 25-year-old fashion designer, Jamiu Ayoade, has been shot dead by a trigger-happy police officer in Lagos, according to dependable sources.

The sources told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the police officer, who is believed to be a senior officer at Ijeshatedo Divisional Police Headquarters (name withheld) allegedly shot and killed Ayoade on Sunday evening in the area.

The incident which occurred at about 7.30 p.m. at No. 49, Wosilat Daudu St., Ijeshatedo, also left two persons injured.

The deceased, Ayoade had gone to the area to attend a friend’s birthday party when he met his untimely death, one of the sources said.

It was learnt that the officer and his men had stormed the venue of the birthday party in two patrol vans at about 6. 30 p.m. and left after observing what the youths were doing.

“Som minutes later, the officer and his men came back to the venue and one of the policemen shot sporadically into the air.

“The officer, who was sitting in front of one of the patrol vans allegedly alighted from the vehicle and brought out his service pistol and went straight to where Ayoade was sitting close to his girlfriend and shot him on the head at close range,” said another source.

Attendees and residents of the street, who were shocked by the gruesome murder of the boy, wept profusely and rained curses on the police officer.

The elder brother of the celebrator, Mr Jelili Bakare, told NAN that they were shocked by the manner Ayoade was killed.

“My younger brother, Abubakar Animashaun, was celebrating his birthday with some friends in a low-key at our late father’s house when the officer and his men came at about 6. 30 p.m.

“The officer called a woman on the street and they left. Surprisingly, the policemen came back to the street again and where I was sitting, one of the policemen that followed him shot into the air believing that some of the youths at the birthday party would run, but they stayed.

“The officer came out in anger from his vehicle and went to where Ayoade was sitting in the passage of the house and shot him on the head.

Contacted on telephone, the State Police Commissioner, Mr Fatai Owoseni, said he had yet to be briefed on the incident.

“I am just coming back from a trip. I have not been briefed on the matter. I am not aware of it yet, ” he said. (NAN)

SportsIranian Police Arrest Student For Looking Like Lionel Messi by Nagisa(op): 1:48pm On May 09, 2017
Iranian police over the weekend ‘arrested’ a student because he looks too much like Lionel Messi.

So many people in the city of Hamaden wanted a picture with Reza Parastesh that police took him to the station and impounded his car to stop the chaos.

The fuss started a few months ago when the Messi lookalike’s dad made him pose in a number 10 Barcelona shirt.

The 25-year-old soon started cutting his hair and grooming his beard like the Argentina forward.

He told AFP: “Now people really see me as the Iranian Messi and want me to mimic everything he does. When I show up somewhere, people are really shocked.

“I’m really happy that seeing me makes them happy and this happiness gives me a lot of energy.”

Parastesh is fully booked with media interviews and has even landed modelling contracts.

He also says that he is working on some football tricks so he can play the role better.

Nairaland GeneralLagos State Government Withdraws Dreaded VIO From Lagos Roads by Nagisa(op): 9:14pm On May 08, 2017
The Lagos State government has withdrawn Vehicle Inspection Officers, aka VIO, from Lagos roads.

For two weeks now the most dreaded traffic officials have been missing from major roads in the state.

Encomium.ng reports that they were withdrawn from the roads because of negative news that has been trailing them for the last few weeks.

Two incidents that were said to have led to their withdrawal include the impounded car that caught fire in their premises at Ojodu and a driver that was said to have collided with a trailer while trying to avoid being arrested by the VIOs.

Certainly not a few motorists particularly the commercial drivers within the state will be happy because of their absence from the roads.

But an officer of the agency who spoke to us on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on its behalf said their absence from the roads is temporary.

He claimed that because of the recent negative news about the agency the government ordered their withdrawal and has asked them to be re-orientated through training.

He said presently all the officers are undergoing a training programme. That at the end of the training they will be back on the roads.

When encomium.ng called Mr Fagunwa, the Public Affairs Manager of Ministry of Transportation, the ministry supervising the agency, he told us to send our questionnaire for onward transmission to the Acting Commissioner of Transportation, Prince Elegushi.

We did as instructed but we are yet to receive any response from the commissioner since Friday, May 5, 2017, when we sent the questionnaire.
Nairaland GeneralStructures Close To Electricity Transmission Lines Will Be Demolished – Fashola by Nagisa(op): 8:58pm On May 08, 2017
Mr Babatunde Fashola, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, has said that structures found to be non-compliant to electricity regulations would be demolished.

“The erection of structures under or close to transmission lines is wrong and dangerous; such structures will have to give way,” Fashola said in Jos on Monday, at the 15th monthly meeting with the power sector participants.

The minister called on Nigerians to stop cutting corners, and particularly warned members of the public against violating regulations meant to secure them.

“The situation in Calabar, where people were electrocuted, is sadly a man-made accident. Unfortunately, such accidents are waiting to happen in many states. We must avert that by demolishing such structures.

“The Calabar situation was particularly bad; a building was located under an existing line even when those concerned knew the consequences of such behaviour.

“The onus of averting such accidents rests on all of us. The Transmission Company of Nigeria, the distribution companies and the safety agencies all have roles to play, but they must collaborate with state governments who grant construction permits,” he said.

Quoting the applicable regulations, he said that a 50-metre gap was the approved distance between the lines and any structure, and advised Nigerians to note that and respect it.

He said that underground cables should also be buried at least three metres below the ground surface to enhance safety.

“There may be debates over whether the demolition of such structures is fair since people live or do businesses there; there may also be arguments as to whether the transmission lines got there before the buildings were erected.

“Such arguments may be legitimate, but what is pertinent is to keep people alive; those non-compliant structures must give way to save lives while providing electricity.

“We must collectively ensure that there is no repeat of the Calabar incident,” he declared. (NAN)

Nairaland General400 Fulani Across Nigeria Convert To Christianity, 7 Ordained As Pastors by Nagisa(op): 7:57pm On May 01, 2017
More than 400 persons of Fulani ethnicity across the country have converted to Christianity.

Rev. Copper Sebok in charge of COCIN Church Panyam, Plateau State, made the disclosure on Sunday at the end of a 3-day conference organised for all Fulani converts of all denominations nationwide, the Daily Post reports.

He urged the converts to preach the gospel of peace to their kindred in order to reduce the prevailing crises in the country.

Sebok said: “The conference is also a re-union service for all Fulani converts regardless of their denominations and to share experiences and encourage one another in the propagation of the gospel of peace.

“It is a concept of COCIN 43 years ago, and to debunk the notion that Fulani’s are nomadic and can’t be reached with the gospel of Christ.’’

In his sermon, the cleric said that man must have compassion on the unsaved to draw them to Christ for eternal salvation.

He decried the level of crises in Nigeria which usually resulted to loss of lives and property, adding that Nigerians must embrace peace for the progress and development of the nation.

Rev. Hassan Mohammed, who spoke on behalf of the converts, expressed gratitude to God for giving them a new lease of life as Christians.

He disclosed that the conference was an eye opener for them to go and proclaim the gospel not only to their kindred but to all nations.

“We have a total of seven Fulani people ordained Reverends beside other Pastors and Evangelists and we are doing our best to enlighten our brothers and sisters about Christianity”.

He thanked the organizers of the conference and appealed to both Christians and Muslim to continue to pray for the peace of the country.

HealthGarri And 4 Other Daily Foods That Could Kill You Read More At Http://www.herald by Nagisa(op): 5:20pm On Apr 30, 2017
Food is good for the body, providing the much-needed nourishment for energy production, repair of tissue as well providing the necessary chemical substances that will help the body fight diseases.

However, care needs to be taken irrespective of how we prepare and consume food materials as some poor cooked or raw materials could be extremely detrimental to our health and wellbeing.

below are 5 of the everyday consumable foods that can endanger your life if not properly prepared or handled with care.

1. Grated Cassava flakes/Garri

Garri is a staple food that all Nigerians can not do without. It plays an important role in our daily lives….so much so that hardly a day goes by without the consumption of this staple or its derivatives. Unfortunately, Garri is one of the most problematic staples as the raw materials used in its production; Cassava has sap that is rich in cyanides and aflatoxins.

Cyanides are very dangerous chemicals that are capable of killing humans by interfering with the red blood cell’s oxygen uptake and may result in respiratory failure in severe cases. Even worse is that no amount of processing entirely gets rid of all the cyanide in the garri, but the good news is that it can be reduced to consumable levels.

Proper processing should ensure that you don’t get killed by the staple you love but moderate consumption is still advised.

2. Bread

Agege Bread is produced in many Bread Bakeries across Lagos State. Most of these bakeries are unregistered and/or unsupervised by health monitoring agencies in the State or Local governments.
Agege bread comes in various sizes and is usually produced in 2 shifts, night and day. Thus the bread is available hot (warm) and oven fresh in the morning and evening. The loaves of bread are appropriately priced to suit every pocket.
There are however a few health challenges resulting from the massive consumption of Agege Bread by Lagos residents. The hygiene of the product right from the bakery to its selling point cannot be guaranteed. Although the bread loaves are brought out from the ovens hot, they are usually taken away for sale naked. Many of the bread sellers will be noticed to be wrapping up the bread inside transparent nylon bags by the roadside where they are being sold to the public. Occasionally, some of the dirty loaves are cleaned with dirty rags by the roadside. It is therefore, obvious that not many of the bread loaves are hygienic for human consumption.
Concerning the actual contents of the bread, some health problems can also arise. The basic flour used is from white wheat flour. It is a sure cause of high blood sugar unlike if whole grain wheat has been used. Thus diabetics and those likely to develop diabetes are warned to stay off this kind of product.

Furthermore, Agege bread is high in table salt and refined sugar. High intake of table salt predisposes to development of high blood pressure while high intake of refined sugar is a well-known cause of Diabetes. Thus wise adults should be wary of excessive consumption of Agege bread or else they are beautiful candidates of these silent killers ravaging our present day society.

3. Akara

Akara also known as bean cakes is a morsel filled with joy for many, especially when taken hot with pap, custard or bread. However, there are growing health concerns as regards the oil content of the delicacy as stated by Dooney’s kitchen.

In the process of its frying, each morsel absorbs loads of groundnut oil; which has a potential to be high in cholesterol and bad for the heart.

According to the site, a subsequent comment made reference to the amount of ground nut oil used in the preparation of akara, he said;

4. Groundnuts

Groundnuts are the love of our lives….oh we love it! Especially if we have to take it Ijebu garri on the rocks. However, just like the oil derivative, one has to be careful of the consumption rate. This because poor storage of the nuts can expose them to fungal attacks which in turns increases the concentration of aflatoxin in them (yeah, aflatoxins are by-products of fungal metabolism). High concentrations of this chemicals can affect the liver in the long run. Hence, the careful consumption.

Note that if you eat groundnuts and probably tastes funny it most likely may be infected by fungal and hence loaded with aflatoxins.

5. Beans

There is a general consensus in the health community is that beans are, in general, a “health” food and that when combined with rice, form a perfect protein for vegetarians.

Beans contain a lot of soluble fiber, protein, carbohydrates, folate and iron. They also contain Lectins, which are also present in high amounts in grains. Because of their protein content, beans (legumes) often get a primary role in the diet of vegetarians, though not without cost.

According to the site wellnessmama.com, lectins in legumes are an important protective measure for the bean plant, and a potentially harmful one for humans. An excerpt from wikipedia also states that;

image: http://www.herald.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/beans.jpg

Obviously, some lectins have more toxic effects than others, as evidenced by the example above, but all lectins have some effect on the body. This is the reason that grains, beans, and other lectin containing foods cannot be eaten raw.

Lectins are capable of harming the lining of the intestines, especially the microvilli. This happens when the lectins bind to the protein receptors in the intestinal lining, causing damage.

When the intestines are damaged, lectins and the foods that they bind to can pass through the intestinal wall and into the bloodstream. These sticky molecules can then wreak havoc in the bloodstream, causing diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

Technically, this write-up isn’t saying you should stop eating these foods, but that you should make sure these foods are properly prepared, so you do not end up in the hospital.

Health is wealth

stay safe

RomanceFive Top Habits Of Happy Couples by Nagisa(op): 4:45pm On Apr 30, 2017
When it comes to healthy relationships, there is no one-size-fits-all advice.

A good relationship is more than something we want—it’s something we need to be our happiest, healthiest, most productive selves. But at home or work, supportive, fulfilling relationships don’t come automicat
A relationship requires work and commitment hence some habits when integrated into your daily life can make you have the best of it.

These habits help to build a continuous relationship and happy marriage:
Going to bed together

Going to bed together can help to build a connection as sleeping and waking together enables both partners to have discussions about their daily activities and also make plans together. There is something cozy about sliding under the covers together and drifting off to sleep.

Cultivate Common interest

It’s important to keep your own hobbies when you’re part of a couple, of course, because you want to stay true to yourself and not change your personality. But you and your partner can cultivate common interests without changing who either of you are, and it will make your relationship stronger as a result.

It is interesting to do things together, for example, if your partner loves reading, you can sometimes grab a book together, and share views.

image: http://www.herald.ng/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/couple-watching-love-and-hip-hop.jpg

Learn to trust and forgive eachother.

In order to have a happy relationship, learn to love and trust your partner. It’s so easy to fight over little things but in all forgiveness is key to having a happy home.

This attribute is important because you can give your partner another chance which sometimes is all they need to prove their love and commitment after a major fight which might have led to betrayal of your trust.

There will be no love in the relationship if both partners keep holding a grudge and finding it difficult to forgive.

Focus on what your partner does right, not wrong.
No one likes a nit-pick! Don’t chastise your partner every time you think they do something wrong. There are nice ways to inform someone if they hurt your feelings, or to correct them if they do something in a bad way.

Instead of yelling at your partner for breaking a plate, correct them and also thank them for whenever they give you a helping hand. Your partner will appreciate that you’re seeing the positive things they’re bringing to the relationship, and being more positive and complimentary will make you feel better than being negative all the time

Say “I love you” and “Have a good day” every morning.

This is another greattip that makes a happy relationship. Saying sweet words to each other can go along way because whenever you are apart, those phrases when remembered will always make you feel happier.
whether it’s on the phone, when he leaves for work, when I run an errand. It makes you feel much happier, and is always a good note to end on when you go about your days.

Christianity EtcChina Bans Dozens Of Islamic Names As Baby Names Read More At Http://www.herald. by Nagisa(op): 2:00pm On Apr 28, 2017
The government of China has banned parents from choosing names like “Muhammad,” “Arafat”, “Jihad” and many more for their children.

They drafted a list of “overly religious” names banned in western Xinjiang province, home to the nation’s Uighur Muslim ethnic minority.

According to Radio Free Asia (RFA), the initiative is meant to diminish the public profile of religion, particularly Islam, in the region.

The communist Chinese government has long considered religion a threat to its dominance and has, in recent years, imposed a series of initiatives to limit Islamic practices, in particular, in response to a series of terrorist attacks in Xinjiang and threats from outside jihadist groups like the Islamic State.

RFA lists “Islam, Quran, Mecca, Jihad, Imam, Saddam, Hajj, and Medina” among the names in the document, titled “Naming Rules for Ethnic Minorities.”

The New York Times, which reports that the list includes “more than two dozen names,” adds “Mujahid,” “Arafat,” and “Muhammad” to that list.

Anyone with such names will be banned from officially registering with the government, which excludes them from, among other things, public education and denies them the legal documents necessary to find work and generally participate in society.

Jobs/VacanciesDSS In Lopsided Recruitment Scandal by Nagisa(op): 1:04pm On Apr 28, 2017
Nigeria’s internal secret service, the State Security Service (SSS), is enmeshed in a recruitment scandal following the exposure of a shocking lopsidedness in the composition of the new officers recently absorbed into the agency.

According to Saharareporters, the agency commissioned 479 cadet officers after their passing-out parade in Lagos on March 5, at a ceremony attended by the Director-General of the Agency, Lawal Daura, and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Abubakar Sadique.

The parade followed a nine-month training program under the agency’s Basic Course 29/2016/17, which encompassed academic activities, insurgency/counterinsurgency, intelligence operations and gathering, firearms drills and physical training exercises.

But the listing of the newly commissioned cadet officers seen by Premium Times revealed a wide disparity in the numbers of slots allocated to the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, indicating that the federal character principle may have been ignored in the recruitment of the officers.

Although the authorities ensured that at least five cadets were recruited from each state and the FCT, they grotesquely tipped the scale in favour of some states in the balance of recruits that emerged from other extraneous considerations.

For instance, while only the minimum of five cadets stipulated per state finally entered the Service from Akwa Ibom, Nigeria’s largest oil producing state, a whopping 51 found their way in from Katsina State, the home state of President Muhammadu Buhari and the Director-General of the SSS, Mr Daura.

It is not clear what criteria was used in the composition of the final list of the new officers.

The anomaly in the exercise is further evident in the disparity between intakes from the two most populous states in Nigeria, Kano and Lagos, which have 25 and seven, respectively, indicating that the size of the pool of applicants from each state was not a factor in the recruitment.

A breakdown of the newly commissioned cadets on geopolitical basis revealed that 165 are from the North-west, about four times as many as those who were picked from the South-south (42).

The figures for the other zones are North-east 100, North-central 66, South-west 57 and South-east 44.

This means that while 331 of the newly commissioned officers are from the 19 northern states and the FCT, less than half of the total intakes were from states in the southern part of Nigeria. See table and charts below for slots allocated to each state.

PoliticsThese People Advised Buhari Against Making Me His Vice President – Bola Tinubu by Nagisa(op): 3:35pm On Apr 27, 2017
The national leader of the All Progressive Congress, APC, has in the yet-to-be launched book titled ‘Against the Run of Play,’ written by the Chairman, Editorial Board of ThisDay, Olusegun Adeniyi revealed the persons who stood in his way of becoming the nation’s Vice President.

The APC Chieftain in the book noted that the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai convinced the president, Muhammadu Buhari against making him his running mate in the last presidential elections.

Tinubu in the book further alleged that some APC defectors including Nasir el-Rufai disturbed the already crafted plan to make him his running mate.

Bola Tinubu added that some other politicians argued the Muslim-Muslim ticket which he and Buhari would have formed.

He added: “What they did behind my back was wrong. We always do things as a group. By the time they joined, we were already too far ahead in our processes but we accommodated them. We agreed to take their state structures and subsume them into the part and they all had their opportunity to nominate the candidates of their choices for different political offices. But they went behind to instigate Buhari and some other people in the party against me on the pretext of religion. That was not right. They were canvassing arguments that the Christians in the North would not vote for a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

“Nasir el-Rufai was also selling the same argument within the CPC (the defunct Congress for Progressive Change) because at that point, he still wanted to have Pastor Bakare brought in as Buhari’s running mate.”

Tinubu in the book further said that the president, Muhammadu Buhari later asked him to nominate three persons for the Vice President’s ticket.

“I backed down because I did not want to be depicted as causing a problem. I backed away from the position in order to offer Buhari a name I once raised with him in 2011: that of Professor Yemi Osibanjo”.

PoliticsIf You Are Clean, I Won’t Harass You – Buhari Tells Jonathan by Nagisa(op): 6:01am On Apr 27, 2017
President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday has reiterated his willingness to fight corruption to a standstill by declaring that anybody who did not have a skeleton in his or her cupboard had nothing to fear about the ongoing anti-graft war.

he further stated that he was not harassing the family of former President Goodluck Jonathan or any other persons in his administration’s ongoing fight against corruption as claimed by the former President.

Buhari said this in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, while reacting to an allegation credited to Jonathan in a book “Against The Run of Play”, written by the Chairman of ThisDayEditorial Board, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi, that his family was being harassed by the present government.

The former President was also quoted to have disagreed with the style being used by the present administration in fighting corruption.

But Buhari said given the scale of revelations and recoveries so far by the anti-corruption agencies, it was obvious that corruption had “an uninhibited course during our recent past.”

While saying he was resolute in the fight, the President said time would give the verdict on whose style of fighting corruption ultimately yielded the most dividends.

Nairaland GeneralPastor Introduces Miracle Pregnancy Test That Reveals Paternity Of Baby Read Mor by Nagisa(op): 8:31pm On Apr 26, 2017
A preacher of Malawian descent by the alias, Prophet Major One, whose real name is Shepard Bushiri, says he has invented a pregnancy test kit that helps women determine the real fathers of their unborn children.

He made the revelation during an interview on Mpumalanga FM on Tuesday, Malawi Voice reported.

In a recording of the interview posted online, Major One explains that anointed tests by him will help the female members of his church and his numerous female followers to know the man responsible for their pregnancy.

The preacher also acknowledged that female members of his church have issues with staying faithful to a partner, emphasising that they need the pregnancy test kit because they are sleeping around without protection and with spiritual husbands, as well.

He said: “Instead of prophesying about men who made them pregnant, they can just use my accurate anointed pregnancy test. I speak the Word to those pregnancy test. The power of God will get in, they use my tests and God does something.”

He also warned about the terrors of invisible men known as “spiritual husbands” that stalk ordinary people’s houses, sleeping with both men and women. These spiritual husbands cause horror and agony in people’s lives, including causing supernatural pregnancies.

Nairaland GeneralAlleged Corruption: Sule Lamido Challenges Transfer Of Case Read More At Http:// by Nagisa(op): 5:21pm On Apr 26, 2017
Former governor of Jigawa, Sule Lamido, has challenged the transfer of his criminal suit at Federal High Court, Abuja, from Justice Adeniyi Ademola to Justice B. O. Quadri for determination.

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta, transferred the case to Quadri following Ademola’s arraignment and trial in an Abuja High Court.

Lamido and his two sons, Aminu and Mustapha, and two others, were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in September 2015.

They were arraigned before Justice Ademola on a 27-count charge bordering on alleged abuse of office and money laundering.

Following Ademola’s arraignment and trial over alleged bribery and corruption, the EFCC applied to Auta for re-assignment of the case to another judge.

However, after the Abuja High Court discharged Ademola and co-defendants in the corruption charges, Lamido asked that the case be returned to him.

He said this was on the grounds that taking the case before Quadri would mean beginning it denovo (afresh).

However, the EFCC in a letter dated April 11 and addressed to Auta, noted that it would not be in the interest of justice for the case to be transferred to Ademola.

“This is because of the negative impressions the public may have about the outcome of the trial, whether the defendants (Lamido and sons) are convicted or not.

“The fear of this public perception may put the judge (Ademola) under pressure, which may affect his sense of judgment.”

Lamido’s lawyer, Mr Joe Agi (SAN), queried the re-assignment of the suit to Justice Quari on the grounds of law.

According to him, 18 of the 20 witnesses lined up by the prosecution have already testified in the suit.

“We wrote to the Chief Judge to reassign the case to Justice Ademola in view of the fact that 18 witnesses have already been called.

“And that by Section 98 (2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, transfer of cases in criminal trials are not done as a matter of course,” Agi said.

On the EFCC position on public sentiments in the event that the suit was returned to Ademola’s court, the lawyer said the issue of public perception was not found anywhere in law.

He urged the court to make an order that the case file be returned to Ademola, as well as an order directing accelerated hearing and determination of the case.

Justice Quadri adjourned the matter until May 3 for hearing. (NAN)

Nairaland GeneralCattle To Get ID Cards To Prevent Trafficking And Theft by Nagisa(op): 5:07pm On Apr 26, 2017
The Indian government is contemplating providing unique identification numbers for cows in the country to prevent their trafficking, officials said.

The information was submitted by the federal government in the country’s top court, which was hearing a petition by an organisation alleging rampant smuggling of cattle across the border of Bangladesh, Xinhua reports.
According to the Vanguard newspapers, Solicitor-General Ranjit Kumar told Supreme Court earlier this week that in order to tackle the illegal smuggling of cows and other cattle, it had accepted the recommendation of an expert group to provide a unique identification number (UIN) for each one.
“It may be made mandatory for cows and their progeny throughout India,” the official quoted solicitor general as saying, adding that “each animal will be tagged proper records of identification details – age, breed, sex, lactation, height, body colour, horn type, tail switch and special marks.”
Following the issuance of UIN, a state-level database may be uploaded on a website that would be linked with a national online database.
The proposal is somewhat similar to India’s huge national identity scheme project, wherein it provided biometric identity card to its citizens.
Focus on cow protection, especially by vigilante groups, has risen since 2014 – the year Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) ascended to power under the leadership of Narendra Modi.
There has been a string of cow-related violence, but many state governments, particularly those ruled by the BJP, have defended the action on the grounds that the animal is considered holy by many Hindus.

Nairaland GeneralPresident Buhari Is No More Than Skin And Bones And Is Dying In Aso Rock- Column by Nagisa(op): 1:09pm On Apr 21, 2017
The convener of ENDS [Every Nigerian Do Something] and popular columnist, Perry Brimah has said Nigeria was being very compassionless to its president and called on the masses to rise against the “cabal” locking up President Muhammadu Buhari who is dying in office.

Brimah in a statement on Friday said “There can be no denying how chronically ill president Muhammadu Buhari looks when he seldom does appear in public. The last time was last week Friday when Kaduna state governor Nasir el-Rufai came visiting.

“The videos of Buhari walking for Friday prayers bring tears to eyes. His asthenic figure now no more than skin-and-bones as he sat down for the Jummah service was heart-wrenching.

“How can a people be so cold they expose a grandfather to this type of extreme stress and deprive him from his needed rest and medical expert attention by tasking him to lead the world’s most complex nation?

“Have we as a people lost our humanity that we continue to task Buhari like this and not campaign for him to be relieved of our burden and rest towards recovery?

“It is insane to continue to deprive him and the nation by locking him up and burdening him with a challenge too heavy for even a strong young man to bear talk-less an old man who just returned from a 49-day leave in which he received blood transfusions and unknown cocktails of serious medications.

“For those of us in the medical profession, we recognize the president’s loss of hair on his head and facial hair as well as his reported blood transfusions as possible evidence of cancer chemotherapy.

“God forbid, however if this is the condition the president is being managed for that the cabal is hiding from the people, the wickedness of the selfish cabal that forces him to remain locked up, “dying” in Aso Rock instead of receiving best therapy, should be vehemently opposed by us masses.

“Whoever is found guilty of hiding any serious diagnosis the president may have and bundling him back to deteriorate in Aso Rock under pressure of Nigeria’s humongous burden should be dealt with according to the full extent of the law. This is not only criminal but sinful.

“A great fear is, what if (God forbid) president Buhari should collapse? This time he may not yet have handed over to Vice president Yemi Osinbajo as “acting president” and Nigeria may be thrown into the chaos that perhaps some desperate politicians eyeing the presidency seat are secretly plotting for. Nigeria cannot afford to be thrown into such state of dilemma and disarray.

“It’s time for Nigerians to demand full disclosure of the true state of health of president Muhammadu Buhari and immediate best options for him to be allowed to rest and recover instead of being locked up to literally die under the weight of Nigeria”.

Nairaland GeneralFederal Court Rules In Favour Of Breast Exposure Read More At Http://www.herald. by Nagisa(op): 11:33am On Apr 21, 2017
A United States federal court has ruled that females can expose their breasts in public because there is no difference between male and female breasts.

This legal development comes in an era when morality and ethics have become a highly contested issue among academics, governments and society as a whole with some people being of the opinion that a person should be granted an unlimited right, including allowing nudity in public places.

In the United States though, some municipalities have their own laws on how people should cover their bodies in public. Although there has been rising pressure from activists to get rid of these laws, town and city officials are determined to protect them.

The Municipality of Fort Collins in the state of Colorado passed an ordinance (No. 134) in November 2015, banning girls and women older than nine from exposing their breasts in public unless they were breastfeeding. A law which was challenged in court six months later by the activist group Free the Nipple.

Free the Nipple is a movement that started from a 2012 film of the same name. The group staged protests throughout the city in the past, gathering topless in public spots.

The gender equality group argued that the ordinance was restrictive and discriminatory against women in the city.

The group explained that if the law was fair, it should have banned both genders from exposing their breasts in public. But city officials countered this by saying the law did not discriminate because male and female breasts are different.

When the facts of the case were presented before the court, District Judge R. Brooke Jackson granted a preliminary injunction on the ordinance in question.

Jackson ruled that the law is discriminatory against women, as well as perpetuating stereotypes that sexualized female breasts.

The court stated that the primary difference between male and female breasts is the ability to breastfeed. Although the court noted the physical differences between the two, it stipulated that it was not enough to warrant different treatment from the government.

“I find that the ordinance discriminates against women based on the generalized notion that, regardless of a woman’s intent, the exposure of her breasts in public (or even in her private home if viewable by the public) is necessarily a sexualized act. Thus, it perpetuates a stereotype engrained in our society that female breasts are primarily objects of sexual desire whereas male breasts are not,” Jackson wrote in his ruling.

Although this is not the final ruling of the case, Jackson wrote that he granted the injunction in part because he believes he will ultimately find that the ordinance passed by the city violated the Equal Protection Clause.

He stated: “The Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment bars state governmental entities from discriminating between the sexes unless they have an ‘exceedingly persuasive justification’ for doing so. In this case, Fort Collins has on the books an ordinance that on its face discriminates against women.”

City attorney, Carrie Daggett said in a statement after the ruling that the city will review the judge’s decision and consider the next steps. It now looks as though the city is reluctant to give up on the case.

Nairaland GeneralOsbornegate: Goodluck Jonathan Ordered Release Of $289m – Suspended NIA DG Revea by Nagisa(op): 11:09am On Apr 21, 2017
Following the suspension of the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Amb. Ayodele Oke along with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal over connection with the sum of $43 million recovered by Anti-graft agency, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the NIA DG has revealed that the former president of the country ordered the release of $289,202,382 to the agency.

Ayodele Oke further noted that the money was authorized in February 2015 prior to the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

The revelation comes after the president suspended both top political office holders and ordered a probe into the case.

A top government source who spoke to Punch on Thursday revealed that the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo-led committee had directed the suspended NIA DG, Ayo Oke to submit documents to back his claim.

The suspended NIA boss was also reported to have gathered other documents to back his claims before the panel set up on orders of the president.

The documents according to report will prove that the former president Goodluck Jonathan ordered the release of the funds through the embattled former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.).

The transaction according to report was aimed as an intervention fund to fight insurgency during the six weeks period between February 14 and March 28, when the polls were postponed.

A source who spoke to news source maintained that: “The DG of the NIA has met with Vice – President Osinbajo and will submit documents pertaining to the transaction.

“The DG admitted on record that the transaction was authorised by former President Jonathan and Col. Sambo Dasuki, and as such, was simply following orders from the commander-in-chief. He will submit memos and other documents as evidence.”

Giving details of the transaction, the source added that a memo was raised by the National Petroleum Investment Management Service on February 25, 2015, coming two weeks after the presidential election had been postponed on ‘security’ grounds.

The source who noted that the postponement was based on former NSA, Sambo Dasuki’s advise noted that in the memo, NAPIMS asked the CBN to release the said sum of $289,202,382 to the NIA in cash.

The source further added that the money was received in cash adding that president Muhammadu Buhari was no briefed on the development because “the DG NIA informed top security people in the government of the existence of the cash.

“Specifically in January 2016, a letter was written by the DG NIA to the NSA, Babagana Moguno, on the existence of the cash. The memo exists and will also be submitted to the panel.”

The source further added: “One question the suspended NIA boss must answer when he meets with the panel is why the apartment used for an official matter was registered in his wife’s name.”

Nairaland GeneralCourt Sentences Man To Life In Prison For Genocide Crimes by Nagisa(op): 4:06pm On Apr 20, 2017
A High Court in Rwanda on Thursday sentenced a man to life in prison for leading and coordinating attacks on minority Tutsis during Rwanda’s 1994 genocide.

In the genocide, an estimated 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed in just 100 days.

Bernard Munyagishari, who headed a government-allied militia known as the Interahamwe in Rwanda’s west, was convicted of crimes of genocide and crimes against humanity.

Lawyers for Munyagishari said they would appeal.

Timothée Kanyegeri, one of the three judges who convicted him, said Munyagishari had trained the militia in how to distinguish the Hutu from Tutsis.

He also “told them that to kill as (for a) snake, you have to hit hard the head, otherwise it will sneak away”, the judge said.

Kanyegeri said Munyagishari had transported members of the militia in buses as they went to kill the Tutsis in Rwanda’s former district of Gisenyi and had personally helped to distribute guns, machetes, axes and clubs used in the killings.

Munyagishari was arrested in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo in 2011. His case was transferred to Rwanda in 2013 from Arusha, Tanzania, where the now-closed International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda was based.

Munyagishari is being held in Kigali’s central prison and was absent during Thursday’s sentencing. (Reuters/NAN)

The party further noted that the chief front agency in the ongoing anti-corruption war has lost its credibility, integrity and relevance as it is unable to produce the owners of the money recovered.

Nairaland GeneralDangote Bows Out, Sells Noodle Company To Dufil by Nagisa(op): 5:04pm On Apr 19, 2017
As part of its regular business portfolio review, Dangote Flour Mills (DFM), has exited its noodles business as it does not consider it strategic. The company has sold the assets of Dangote Noodles to Dufil Prima Foods, makers of Indomie noodles.

To smoothen the transition, DFM has offered Dufil the use of some of its facilities on an interim basis.

The noodles business was part of Dangote Flour Mills which the Dangote Group recently re-acquired from Tiger Brands.

Group Managing Director, Dangote Flour Mills, Thabo Mabo, said the divestment is part of strategies of focusing on core areas of flour and pasta production where the company has substantial market share.

He said that with the divestment, Dangote Flour will now focus on its strengths in flour and pasta and become more profitable by improving in areas of quality, distribution and marketing.

The transaction which became effective last Monday, according to him, “is a win-win situation for Dangote Flour Mills, Dufil Prima Foods and staff of Dangote Noodles”, as Dangote Flour stands to boost more market presence through robust marketing.

He described the sale and transfer of assets as one of the most perfect of divestments, with Dufil Prima Foods taking possession and kicking off production immediately.

Under the terms of the sales agreement, Dufil Prima Foods, according to him, will continue to produce and sell noodles under the brand name, ‘Dangote Noodles’ for two years before changing the brand name.

Chief Executive Officer, Dufil Prima Foods, Deepak Singhal, confirmed the deal and described the acquirement of Dangote Noodles as strategic as they continue to seek more dominance of the noodles market.

image: http://www.herald.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/WhatsApp-Image-2017-04-19-at-09.49.411.jpeg

Acquiring Dangote Noodles, he said will help Dufil Prima Foods deepen and sustain their market share as well as gain a strategic advantage in terms of several ranges of noodles products in their stable.

He re-stated that they are not shutting down the noodles production line but are commencing production with the brand name of Dangote Noodles immediately.

To ensure a seamless transition and commencement of production, he said most of the former staff of Dangote Noodles are to be employed as staff of Dufil Prima Foods.

With the new development, some former staff of Dangote noodles will transit to Dufil Prima Foods, while the rest redundant workers are being adequately compensated with mouth-watering severance packages for their services to the company over the years.

He said the terms of the severance package were agreed with the relevant trade unions and staff were being paid off immediately to enable those retained by the new owners to start on a fresh contract while those who will not be retained will not have to wait for their benefits.
