Nairaland GeneralMy Unborn Child’s Future Is Brighter Than Yours’ – Davido Blasts ‘fan’ Read More by Nagisa(op): 4:40pm On Apr 19, 2017
Aye crooner, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido has expressed his anger at the constant linking of his musical success to his father’s wealth in a recent exchange with a troll on social media.

The drama started today after some trolls hopped on his page to say unkind things about his recent concert, while also asserting that he is only successful because of his rich father.

“Spoilt boy spending papa’s money,” one of the trolls told him today.

This terse criticism may be linked to the singer’s boastful song ‘IF’, where he bragged about having N30 billion in his personal account, and also his subsequent revelation that his father secured a $4 billion project.

However, Davido is tired of people dismissing his personal efforts, and he went full blast on trolls who continue to make reference to his father’s wealth.

“That joke ain’t funny no more! Many artist papa get money why dem no blow! I have God’s grace,” said the singer who calls himself Omo Baba Olowo, adding, “I came in this game 2011 and I’m still going strong! Money can’t buy that!”

And then he rained curses on the troll, saying his unborn child with second babymama has a brighter future than the troll.

According to the reports of Politics Nigeria, one of the sureties identified as one Alhaji Waheed Sobunlo. He wrote an undertaking on the 26/12/2016 to provide the trio on every date of adjournment.

At a second hearing into the case on in January 2017, the sisters did not appear in court and this prompted the presiding judge to issue a bench warrant for the sisters. The warrants were dated 25/1/2017.

A bench warrant was issued for their surety, Mr. Sobunlo on 2/2/2017 after he failed to produce the sisters in court. It was later discovered Sobunlo and 2 other sureties had also absconded. IRCC is best placed to answer questions about the process for issuing emergency travel documents.

The statement was signed by the Global affairs spokesperson, John Babcock.

The Nigerian police have since written to the Canadian high commission in Lagos over the matter and currently awaiting a response.

Nairaland GeneralWhistle-blower Give Hints Of The Woman Who Kept $43m In Ikoyi Apartment by Nagisa(op): 1:13pm On Apr 18, 2017
More details have emerged following the discovery of $43 million, N23.2 million and £27,800 (N13billion) cash found in an apartment in Lagos last week as the whistleblower has narrated how the cash was being deposited in the apartment.

According to the whistleblower who worked as a guard said a woman who spoke fluent Yoruba repeatedly brought huge bags of money to Apartment 7B.

That particular property was known to guards as Apartment “Dash-Dash” because in the records there were two dashes where the name of the owner ought to be.

He recalled that on two occasions, he helped the woman, who was always curiously dressed in a haggardly way, to carry the money to “Dash-Dash”. The woman, on the first occasion, gave him N10,000 as a gift, and on the second, N500.

He said the woman would spend about two hours in the apartment, then go freshen up in the gym at the back of the building before leaving.

According to the whistleblower, who is in hiding for fear of his life, there are about 19 fully occupied apartments and 2 penthouses at the 16 Osborne Road, Ikoyi, property. Estate valuers estimate each of the apartment with four bedrooms and state of the art facilities to cost about N250 million.

Nairaland GeneralBuhari’s Boys Bury Loots In Aso Rock For Spiritual Protection – Fayose by Nagisa(op): 12:23pm On Apr 18, 2017
The governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose has rubbished claims by the minister of Information, Lai Mohammed as absurd while saying that “Looters in the Muhammadu Buhari’s Presidency, especially those being compensated for funding the election of the President in 2015 bury their own loots in the Villa with Presidential protection.”

It will be noted that Mr Mohammed has said that looters have resorted to burying stolen funds in their backyards, deep forests and burial grounds.

He asked, “Should it be wrong for other supposed looters that do not have presidential protection like the All Progressives Congress, APC, looters to bury their loots in burial grounds probably for spiritual protection?”

In a statement issued on Monday, April 17, 2017 by his media aide, Lere Olayinka, the governor said “Nigerians can no longer be fooled with stage-managed loots recoveries, with no traceable owners (looters), especially when the loots are traceable to close associates of the president and his cabinet members.

He said; “Obviously, this so-called anti-corruption war has become a laughing stock with N49 million found in Kaduna Airport, N448 million discovered in a shop at Victoria Island, Lagos and N13 billion found in Ikoyi, Lagos neither having owners nor the identities of owners of the properties where the money was found known.”

Governor Fayose maintained that “It is either the money belongs to members of Buhari’s government or it is being planted by the government to sustain its fake anti-corruption fight in the minds of the people.”

He said, “Enough of stage-managed and fake anti-corruption war aimed solely at opposition figures, especially presidential hopefuls in the 2019 election.”

The governor noted that two different laws were now being operated in the country, with one law for the APC and those who decamp to the party and the other for the opposition, especially those perceived as having presidential ambition.

“The narrative they push daily is that only those in their government are saints while other Nigerians, including those in the National Assembly, Judiciary, opposition politicians and the civil servants are rogues while only Buhari’s appointees are saints.

“To worsen matters, the cluelessness of the APC government in the last two years has plunged the country into debt without anything to show.

“The cabals in the Presidency are also taking advantage of the President’s state of health, which is as a result of his age to oppress Nigerians.

“Nigerians must, therefore, keep their eyes on the ball and not be carried away by the orchestrated distractions aimed at preventing them from seeing how the APC-led government has failed woefully.”

He called on the international community to hold Nigeria accountable on the recovered N13 billion cash found in that Ikoyi, Lagos apartment saying; “this must not be swept under the carpet.”

Nairaland GeneralTeenager Commits Accidental Suicide On Instagram Live While Friends Watched Read by Nagisa(op): 12:17pm On Apr 13, 2017
An American teen is dead after he accidentally shot himself while his friends watched on Instagram Live, according to local TV station WXIA. “I heard a big boom,” his mother Shaniqua Stephens said. “I couldn’t tell if it was a gunshot or what.”

Stephens had just watched her 13-year-old son, Malachi Hemphill, take out the trash Monday evening when she heard the gunshot.

She rushed upstairs with her daughter to find her son in a pool of blood. His phone was still streaming on Instagram Live.

“We kicked in the door. We found him just laying there in a pool of blood,” Stephens told the station. “My daughter screamed and said, ‘Mom turn his phone off!’ As I proceeded to look at his phone he was on Instagram Live.”

The teen was live on Instagram holding a gun when it suddenly went off. He was rushed to the hospital where he died. “There was about 40 to 50 kids outside,” she said. “I guess these were the kids that were watching on live that live in the area.

I guess when it happened they just ran over here.” Stephens informed WXIA that someone told Malachi to put a clip in the gun during the live video and he obliged. Stephens believes it was an accident and not a suicide.

Detectives are working to find out how Malachi got ahold of the gun.

Stephens is now urging parents to keep a vigilant eye on what their children are doing. “Monitor their phones, just monitor your children,” Stephens said. “More now than anything.”

Nairaland GeneralTwo Reasons Why Loving Dogs Is Good For Your Health by Nagisa(op): 12:51am On Apr 13, 2017
If you’re thinking of adding a dog to your family, there are now two reasons to go on with it.

A new study has found that being exposed to pets from a young age lowers the risk of obesity and results in fewer allergies.

Scientists say that dogs, in particular, expose children to dirt and bacteria early in life, which creates early immunity, Daily mail reports.

The study, conducted at the University of Alberta, in Canada, looked at more than 700 infants from the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development Study, whose mothers were enrolled during pregnancy between 2009 and 2012.

The mothers were asked to indicate whether they owned a pet at enrollment, during the second or third trimester, and three months after birth.

Infant gut microbiotas were studied from fecal samples collected around three months old.

The researchers compared whether the babies were exposed only during pregnancy, or both pre-and postnatally, to no pet exposure.

It was discovered that over half of the studied infants were exposed to at least one furry pet in the pre- and/or postnatal periods, with 70 percent being dogs.

Researchers found that pre- and postnatal pet exposure enriched the amount of two types of bacteria in the gut with more than a twofold greater likelihood of high abundance.

Ruminococcus and Oscillospira have been linked with reducing childhood allergies and obesity, respectively.

‘The abundance of these two bacteria were increased twofold when there was a pet in the house,’ said Dr. Anita Kozyrskyj, a University of Alberta pediatric epidemiologist.

She added that pet exposure was shown to affect the gut microbiome indirectly – from dog to mother to unborn baby during pregnancy as well as during the first three months of the baby’s life.

In other words, even if the dog had been given away for adoption just before the mother gave birth, the healthy microbiome exchange could still take place.

The study also found that having pets at home reduced the likelihood of the transmission of vaginal GBS (group B Strep) during birth.

The bacteria can cause pneumonia in newborns and is prevented by giving antibiotics to the mother during delivery.

Past research has shown that pets are beneficial to human health in a number of ways.

Several studies have shown spending just a few minutes with a furry friend can lower anxiety and blood pressure and increase levels of serotonin and dopamine, two neurochemicals that play roles in producing feelings of calm and well-being.

And a study from the American Psychological Association found that pet owners over age 65 make 30 percent fewer visits to the doctor.

Although the researchers say it’s too early to predict how the findings will play a role in the future, Dr. Kozyrskyj doesn’t rule out the concept of a ‘dog in a pill’ as a preventive tool for allergies and obesity.

‘It’s not far-fetched that the pharmaceutical industry will try to create a supplement of these microbiomes, much like was done with probiotics,’ she said.

EducationBill To Abolish Discrimination Between First Degree, HND Passes Second Reading by Nagisa(op): 10:46am On Apr 12, 2017
A Bill for an Act to abolish the discrimination between First Degree and Higher National Diploma (HND) in same profession passed second reading in the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

The bill, which was sponsored by Rep. Ali Isa (Gombe-PDP) and Rep. Edward Pwajok (Plateau-PDP), seeks to prohibit the existing dichotomy between both certificates.

Contributing to the debate, Pwajok said a research he carried out on both certificates, showed that the discrimination had no moral justification.

He said that the unfortunate situation would make the international community to look down on the status of educational institutions in the country.

The lawmaker said that it was unfortunate that such discrimination existed in a critical sector required for national development, regretting that there was a lot of segregation at employment level.

According to him, those with first degree are placed on Grade Level 8, while those with HND are placed on Grade Level 6 or 7.

He said that in some organisations, degree holders were paid N100, 000 at entry level, while their counterparts with HND were paid N70, 000.

But, the lawmaker said, in other countries, technical experts were paid higher than administrators, adding that “the reverse is the case in the country’’.

He said that if the private sector must develop, proper recognition must be given to polytechnics and similar institutions in the country.

After the debate, the Speaker of the House, Mr Yakubu Dogara, forwarded the matter to the Committee on Tertiary Education and Services for further actions. (NAN)

Nairaland GeneralINEC Admits To Taking N3billion Bribe To Rig 2015 Elections by Nagisa(op): 9:57am On Apr 12, 2017
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in charge of the nation’s electoral process has admitted that its officials received part of the N23 billion alleged to have been disbursed by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison Madueke.

The Commission following the admission has formally suspended 205 personnel of the commission for allegedly receiving part of bribe ahead of the 2015 general elections.

Briefing journalists, Mallam Mohammed Haruna, a National Commissioner and member of the Information and Voter Education Committee at INEC, after a meeting of the leadership of the commission on Tuesday revealed that the commission has decided to place the 205 affected officials on half salaries.

He added that the commision had in line with its terms and conditions of service refered the affected persons and the case to the Presidency and the EFCC for further action and investigation.

Mallam Mohammed Haruna revealed that the decision to refer the case to the presidency is because it lacks the appropriate power to pursue the case.

Haruna said: “The commission met today (Tuesday) to consider the report of its expanded Appointment, Promotion and Disciplinary Committee on the EFCC Interim Report on Bribery, Corruption and Money Laundering Charges during the 2015 general elections.

“You may recall that late last year, the commission received an interim report from the EFCC detailing allegations against 202 serving and retired INEC officials and staff in 16 states of the federation.

“In furtherance of its zero tolerance for corruption in the electoral process, the commission ordered a thorough investigation into the allegations to establish the culpability or otherwise of those named in the EFCC report.

“The committee’s work was thorough and painstaking, involving issuance of queries to the 202 officials mentioned in the report and interviewing them individually in accordance with the principle of fair hearing and in consonance with INEC Staff Conditions of Service.

“As a result of the initial findings of the committee, an additional 80 serving officials of the commission, who were not named in the EFCC report but whose names came up in the course of the investigation, were also queried and interviewed.

“The cases of one former National Commissioner, five former Resident Electoral Commissioners (one of them deceased) have been referred to the Presidency and the EFCC for further necessary
action.

“Based on their level of involvement, 205 serving INEC staff will be immediately placed on interdiction, which entails suspension from duties and being placed on half salary, pending the final determination of the cases they have with the EFCC.”

Haruna further revealed that a non-governmental organisation, West African Network of Election Observers was used to carry out the bribery operation.

He revealed that the organisation was made up of retired INEC officials adding that the committee set up to probe the case was able to establish that INEC staff received N3,046,829,000 in 16 states to influence the 2015 general elections outcome.

“There was a clear attempt to bribe INEC staff to influence the outcome of the 2015 general elections using an NGO, West African Network of Election Observers, made up mainly of retired senior INEC officials.

“Out of over N23bn, which the EFCC report said was used to influence the elections, the committee established that N3,046,829,000 was received by INEC staff in 16 states.”

Nairaland GeneralSenate Stops Kashamu’s Extradition by Nagisa(op): 4:42pm On Apr 11, 2017
The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday halted the planned extradition of Senator Kashamu Buruji representing Ogun East Senatorial district to the United States over drug allegations leveled against him.

The decision was taken following the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions report which said that there were various cases pending against Senator Buruji Kashamu over drug allegation in various federal high courts in Nigeria.

It added that it was counter productive for Kashamu to be extradited to the United States of America when the matter has not been exhausted in courts of competent jurisdiction in Nigeria.

The petition of planned extradition from TRLP Chambers, a private legal firm, on behalf of Senator Kashamu averred that: “It was wrong for the former Chairman of the NDLEA, Mr, Ahmad Giade and the Attorney General of the federation to order Kashamu’s extradition at the request of the United States.”

The Senate finally granted the recommendation that cases already pending in various courts be exhausted before any action.

RomanceTop 3 Unhealthy Relationship Habits Being Taken As Normal by Nagisa(op): 4:44pm On Apr 10, 2017
Love is one of the most profound emotions known to human beings. There are many kinds of love, but most people seek its expression in a romantic relationship with a compatible partner. For some, romantic relationships are the most meaningful element in their lives, providing a source of deep fulfillment. The ability to have a healthy, loving relationship is not innate.

Similarly, Relationships have a lot of challenges that comes with it and often times people tend to display habits that are unhealthy because they assume it is normal.

Some of these unhealthy habits are:

KEEPING SCORE PHENOMENON: This phenomenon centers around the blame game. In this case, both partners battle to know who has screwed up the most and should be more committed in the relationship.
Most people tend to hold a grudge and find a way to get back at their partner for the wrong attitude meted out on them.

This is Toxic and unhealthy because the scorecard develops over time and past wrongdoings are used to justify current righteousness Not only are you deflecting the current issue itself, but you ‘ready ginning up guilt and bitterness from the past to manipulate your partner into feeling wrong in the present.

If this goes on long enough, both partners eventually spend most of their energy trying to prove that they’re less culpable than the other, rather than solving the current problem. People spend all of their time trying to be less wrong for each other instead of being more right for each other.

DISPLAYS OF “LOVING” JEALOUSY: This is the abuse of your partner’s emotion by making an attempt to control their behavior because of some jealousy developed due to insecurity.
This jealousy leads to anger, getting pissed off when your partner talks, behaviour touches or communicates with someone else.
This ends up in a toxic situation because it leads behaviors such as hacking your partners emai account, reading through their messages in their absence, taking their calls privately and many others.

Some jealousy is natural and in situations like this, it is wise to trust your partner because excessive jealousy and controlling behaviors towards your partner are signs of your own feelings of unworthiness and you should learn to deal with them and not force them onto those close to you. Because otherwise you are only going to eventually push that person away.

DROPPING “HINTS” AND OTHER PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOUR

Instead of stating a desire or thought overtly, your partner tries to nudge you in the right direction of figuring it out yourself. Instead of saying what’s actually upsetting you, you find small and petty ways to piss your partner off so you’ll then feel justified in complaining to them.

This is toxic because it shows that you two are not comfortable communicating openly and clearly with one another. A person has no reason to be passive-aggressive if they feel safe expressing any anger or insecurity within the relationship. A person will never feel a need to drop “hints” if they feel like they won’t be judged or criticized for it.

To avoid this situation, it is best to State your feelings and desires openly. And make it clear that the other person is not necessarily responsible or obligated to them but that you’d love to have their support. If they love you, they’ll almost always be able to give it.

Nairaland GeneralWhat God Told Me About Those “destroying The Naira”– Pastor Adeboye by Nagisa(op): 4:06pm On Apr 10, 2017
The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God Worldwide (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has warned those “destroying the Naira”, that they will not live to enjoy their illicit gains.

Adeboye stated this during a sermon yesterday, at a special Sunday Service organized by RCCG Region 11, Ikoyi/Victoria Island family, at the Tafawa Balewa Square in Onikan, Lagos.

The much-respected cleric, also said he received a revelation from God early this year, but was just sharing it for the first time.

“Those who are deliberately destroying the Naira will make the money but will not spend it,” Adeboye declared.

The Naira has drastically nose-dived in value in recent months, exchanging at over N500 to the dollar, before it began to appreciate lately.

As at last weekend, it suffered further depreciation after it was sold N405 to the dollar at the parallel market.

Recall that the Naira appreciated slightly by gaining N1 against the Dollar last Thursday to sell at N397, but it lost N8 on Friday to go for N405.

Some Forex traders at the Olugbede Modern Market in Egbeda, Lagos, attributed the recent free-fall was caused by the inability of some customers to easily access Forex through the banks.

Nairaland General$1.3bn Malabu Scam: Jonathan May Have Received $200m – Report by Nagisa(op): 2:54pm On Apr 10, 2017
Former President Goodluck Jonathan, a former Attorney-General of the Federation, Mohammed Adoke (SAN), as well as some members of the National Assembly may have received about $400m from the $1.3bn paid by oil giants Shell and Eni, into a Federal Government escrow account, a new report suggests.

A former Russian Ambassador and Intelligence Officer, Ednan Agaev, was quoted as saying this while speaking with officials of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the United States as well as Italian prosecutors, according to a report by an American news website, Buzzfeed.

According to the PUNCH, detectives in the US, the Netherlands and Italy are jointly investigating the $1.3bn Malabu scam which Nigerian officials have described as the biggest single scam ever perpetrated against the Nigerian people.

Agaev’s testimony has since been tendered in an Italian court as evidence where Adoke and a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Dan Etete, are being charged. Etete is also said to be the owner of Malabu Oil and Gas Limited.

According to the court documents, Agaev, who worked as a middleman between the oil companies and Etete during the Malabu deal, told the FBI and Italian prosecutors that Etete had told him he needed to pay $400m in bribes to senior Nigerian officials and parliamentarians.

The report states in part, “Agaev was asked about payment of his commission. Agaev stated that he went to Etete and told him to pay him $65,000,000. Agaev stated that Etete said, ‘I can’t pay you, I have to pay Adoke [Mohammed Bello Adoke, then Nigeria’s attorney general] $400m and all the other people in the Senate and the National assembly.’ Agaev stated that he would think President Goodluck Jonathan got at least $200m of this money.”

In a follow-up interview with Italian authorities, Agaev repeated his allegations. “I said that if it’s true, that he paid, he had to pay $400m, I assume that at least $200m went to Goodluck,” he said. “I heard from Chief (Etete), he claims that he had to pay $400m, so, if this is true if he paid $ 400 million, then most probably the President, as the biggest boss, took at least the half of it.”

Jonathan, Etete, Adoke and all indicted oil firms have, however, denied all the allegations levelled against them.

When one of our correspondents contacted the former President’s spokesman, Ikechukwu Eze, on Sunday, he said, “I refer to your enquiry over what you described as a new report accusing former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan of receiving millions of dollars as a kickback to approve the sale of OPL 245 oil field.

“To me there is nothing new in this recycled fallacy. I am aware that following some speculative news reports earlier in the year, on this same conjecture and fabricated claims, and the public interest they generated, ex-President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan’s Office offered a clarification in a statement issued in January 2017.”

Jonathan, had in the January statement, described the allegation as a false narrative

“We make bold to point out that the former President never sent Abubakar Aliyu or anybody else, as the innuendoes in the false report suggest, to ENI, the IOCs or any indigenous operator to seek favour or collect any gratification on his behalf,” he had said.

The Malabu Oil scandal involves the $1.3bn paid by oil giants, Shell and Eni, to Federal Government accounts in 2011 for OPL 245 which is said to hold reserves of about 9.23 billion barrels of oil.

The OPL 245 was said to have been bought by Etete under questionable circumstances in 1998 when he was the oil minister. Etete was said to have bought it for a fraction of its actual value. However, it was revoked by the President Olusegun Obasanjo administration.

During the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011, the then AGF, Adoke, brokered a deal for the sale of the OPL 245, acting as a middleman between Shell and Eni on the one hand, and Etete’s company, Malabu, on the other hand.

Shell and Eni were said to have paid about $1.3bn for the OPL 245 which was paid into two escrow accounts owned by the Federal Government. However, Adoke was said to have transferred over $800m to Etete who in turn transferred over $500m to Aliyu, Jonathan’s alleged front.

Nairaland General“girls As Young As 9 Are Physically, Spiritually Ready For Marriage”-malaysianpm by Nagisa(op): 12:47pm On Apr 05, 2017
A Malaysian member of parliament, Tasek Gelugor, said girls as young as nine were “physically and spiritually” ready for marriage.

He made comments on Wednesday as Malaysia passed a law on sexual offences against children without criminalising child marriage.

Gelugor, a member of the Barisan Nasional coalition, made the comments in response to a proposal by an opposition member of parliament to amend the Sexual Offences Against Children bill to include a ban on child marriages.

The proposal was voted down by the majority of parliament.

“They reach puberty at the age of nine or 12. And at that time, their body is already akin to them being 18 years old.

“So physically and spiritually, it is not a barrier for the girl to marry,” Tasek said on Tuesday during a debate on the bill.

He also said there was “nothing wrong” with a rape victim marrying her rapist as she would then not face a “bleak future”.

Tasek’s comments sparked outrage on social media, with some opposition politicians asking for him to be fired.

Under both civil law and Islamic law, girls and boys younger than 18 can be married.

Civil law sets the minimum age of marriage at 18, but those above 16 can be married with the permission of their state’s chief minister.

Under Islamic law, children younger than 16 can get married if the Shariah courts allow it.

The law criminalises “grooming”, touching and befriending children as a prelude to sexual abuse, and spells out penalties for making and possessing pornography involving those under 18.

A special court will also be set up under the new law to deal with child sexual abuse cases more quickly.

The maximum penalty under the law is a jail term of up to 30 years and six strokes of the whip for making, possessing or distributing child pornography.

The new law comes into effect ten months after British pedophile Richard Huckle was found guilty of abusing up to 200 babies and children, mostly in Malaysia.

Reuters reported in 2017 that most complaints of child sexual abuse in Malaysia do not lead to successful prosecutions, largely due to weaknesses in the criminal justice system.

Only 140 of the 12,987 cases of child sexual abuse reported to police between 2012 and July 2016 resulted in convictions.

“The law is more stringent now… but not enough,” Teo Nie Ching, the opposition member of parl;iament who proposed the ban child marriages, told Reuters.

She said offenders would use the absence of a ban on child marriages to get away with crimes as marital rape is not a crime in Malaysia.

There have been several cases over the years of rapists marrying theirs victim, including those under 18, to avoid prosecution.(Reuters/NAN)

The Lagos State Controller of Prisons, Mr. Olumide Tinuoye has disclosed that 32 prison inmates died in one year in Lagos prisons due to their inability to access funds for proper medication and drugs.

Speaking when the Prerogative of Mercy Committee led by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem visited the Ikoyi and Kirikiri prisons on a fact-finding mission, Tinuoye said the prisons also lost one female inmate last month after being on dialysis for over two years.
The visit of the committee was also to determine what measures could be taken to decongest the facilities which were over populated.

Tinuoye said that often times, prison officials used their personal money to buy drugs for the inmates while others lived on the philanthropic gestures of churches and mosques which had been assisting to provide medication for the inmates.

The Controller stated that there were 7,714 in all the prisons across the state, 6,047 of them awaiting trials, 1,390 convicted, 202 already condemned while 75 serving life sentences.

He stated for instance, Ikoyi prisons which has a capacity of 800 presently has a total of 2,508 inmates, 461 of which are convicted and 2,047 while Kirikiri Medium prisons with a capacity of 1,700 has 2,979 inmates out of which 2,634 are awaiting trials while 345 are convicted inmates.

Mr Adeniji who said he had taken note of the drug situation of the clinics in the various prisons promised to seek the support of the state’s ministry of health for provision of drugs to the sick inmates.

The Justice Commissioner emphasised the need for the Federal Government to show more interest in the prisons and to work out a system to assists those who are sick, particularly to prevent an epidemic like meningitis likely to be occasioned by severe heat currently being experienced in the state.

“We don’t want to experience a prison break in Lagos, The prisons is supposed to reform inmates and not to make them want to make them want to break out on the account of ill-health,” he said.

PoliticsBishop Naga Mohammed: Shettima Released ₦210m To Rebuild Churches In Borno by Nagisa(op): 1:27pm On Apr 04, 2017
The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Borno State, Bishop Naga Williams Mohammed, who also happens to be the Secretary of Northern Bishops Incorporated spoke about how Borno state, once a Boko Haram stronghold, has been for Christians and how successive governments have handled the issue of insurgency.

In an Interview with the Daily Trust, the Bishop spoke on how Governor Shettima treated Christians, saying he was the fairest Governor they’d ever experienced. You can read excerpts below.

Daily Trust: It is rather surprising to see that your surname is ‘Mohammed’. How did that happen?

Naga Mohammed: In Southern Borno generally, it is common to see a family mixed with both Muslims and Christians. My father was a Muslim and my mother was a dedicated Christian. We were living in the same house, eating the same food and sharing the same culture. When it is Christmas, my mum would give money to my dad to buy whatever animal for us to slaughter. The same thing when it was time for Sallah, he would buy a ram for us to slaughter.

DT: As a Bishop, some persons would probably expect you to have dropped the ‘Mohammed’ in your surname…

NM: Someone cannot replace either of his biological parents. Mohammed is my father’s name, he was a Muslim and I cannot replace or change my father, and I am his son.

DT: You talked about religious harmony in your family. How does that experience compare with instances of intolerance all over Nigeria?

NM: In the past, there was absolute tolerance to the extent that you don’t care what the next man’s faith is. In fact, in my mum’s house, she had a kettle which is called ‘Buta’ in Hausa. Muslims use it in performing ablution. While growing up, I was raised to see Muslims from a positive light. All I knew was that Muslims were doing what they were supposed to do, and we Christians were doing what we were supposed to do in terms of worship and coexistence in our communities.

In Southern Borno where most of the Christians in Borno State hail from, most of our families are comprised of Muslims and Christians. I used to know of a family where the father and his six children were Christians, while his three wives were Muslims. And they lived peacefully.

DT: Christians make up a sizeable part of the population in Borno State, but they still constitute a minority. How have state governments been responding to challenges of insurgency faced by Christians in the state?

NM: If you go back to fairly recent history, our first major problem was in February 2006, when a Danish man whom I learnt was not even a Christian, drew a caricature of Prophet Muhammad. Unfortunately, there was protest here in Maiduguri and Christians received the repercussions. A total of 56 churches were razed down in Borno, and many shops belonging to Christians were destroyed. What struck me most is that there was no compensation from the then government.

Except promises made by then Governor Ali Modu Sheriff. He promised to compensate for all those properties destroyed but to no avail. I was among the Administrative Committee as representative of the Christian community constituted by the then governor. I think only N150,000 was given to each pastor whose entire church was destroyed. At a point, we compiled all the destroyed properties including churches and submitted the report to the state government.

But thank God, in the history of Borno State, there is no governor who has been fair to the Christian community in this State as much as Governor Kashim Shettima. I am saying this in the presence of God Almighty and this is nothing but the truth. I am speaking boldly without fear or favour because as CAN Chairman I do not receive salary or kobo from government or any institution, but the facts need to be told.

For example, when Gwoza people were driven from their ancestral homes, they fled to Maiduguri, and Shettima personally came to CAN Centre in Jerusalem Ward twice. He gave N10 million for their upkeep at first instance, by then the victims were not many. By the end of October 2014, the IDPs from Gwoza increased to 42,000 in that camp alone. He came again and gave another N10 million. He also gave additional N5 million for Christians from Borno who fled to Cameroon to be returned home. He gave another N5 million for non-indigenes who fled to Cameron to come back to Nigeria. He even directed the Borno State Emergency Management Agency to be supplying food directly to the IDPs under the Christian leadership.

DT: Earlier, you said Governor Ali Modu Sheriff didn’t pay any compensation to Christians after the 2006 crisis. Churches and Mosques were destroyed by Boko Haram from 2011 to date under Governor Kashim Shettima. Have any of these churches been rebuilt?

NM: We had a meeting with Governor Shettima on how his administration can come in to assist in rebuilding some of these churches. Last year when he visited Gwoza, Askira-Uba and Chibok Local Government areas for on-the-spot assessment post-destruction. He saw how some of these churches were burnt down to ashes. Some churches were not only razed down, but pulled down completely as if they never existed.

During Shettima’s visit to these areas, he released N100 million for the rebuilding of some of these churches. A committee was set up for that purpose, I am a member of the committee headed by a permanent secretary, Mr. Justus Zare as Chairman, and I am happy to inform you that presently we have used that money to rebuild 11 key churches which our people are now using. I am surprised to hear some people saying why don’t we rebuild all the churches. We cannot do that because there are many places that are still unsafe.

You cannot expect us to go to the Christian communities on the fringes of Sambisa Forest to start rebuilding their destroyed churches.

After the initial N100m, Shettima graciously approved another N105 million for the second phase of rebuilding destroyed churches. This was made possible when CAN officials led by my humble self had a meeting with him on Thursday March 30, 2017 at the Government House. So far, the governor has released N210 million for reconstruction of our burnt churches. He also approved the sponsorship of all our local pastors to participate in the 2017 Jerusalem Pilgrimage.

Shettima’s government has given us the opportunity to run a collective programme on television and radio. We work with the Jama’atul Nasril Islam to sensitize our people on peaceful coexistence. They trust us, we trust them. In fact, it may interest you to know that there was a time I was asked to lead in a Christian prayer at a gathering where we were only three Christians in the midst of many Muslims. This government is bringing harmony between religious leaders through fairness

Nairaland GeneralFG Begins Online Registration Of Unemployed Nigerians Wednesday by Nagisa(op): 2:10am On Apr 04, 2017
The Federal Government is to register unemployed Nigerians online as from Wednesday April 5.

The Deputy Director, Information and Public Relations of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Edmund Onwuliri, announced this in a statement given to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Abuja on Wednesday

Onwuliri said the registration was aimed at collecting up to date data of the unemployed Nigerians.

He said the registration was in compliance with NDE’s mandate “to obtain and maintain a data bank on unemployment and vacancies in the country.”

The deputy director said the exercise would enable the directorate to serve as a clearing house linking job seekers with existing vacancies in government agencies and the private sector.

“The online portal which goes live on Wednesday April 5, 2017, is designed to capture the relevant details of any unemployed person. It will equally serve as a job exchange portal that will link job seekers and employers.

“There will be a practical demonstration of the workings of the portal at the NDE stand at the ongoing 28th edition of the Enugu International Trade on Thursday”, he said.

He gave the portal’s address as: www.jobsforall.ng.

“The directorate sees this initiative as a bold step toward deepening the effectiveness of its employment creation strategies and a critical input into the process of designing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating programmes and schemes.”

Onwuliri explained that the online portal would henceforth serve as a meeting point for job seekers and their prospective employers, adding that the initiative would go a long way to eliminate the cumbersome process of recruitment by employers of skilled labour in private and public sectors. Nairaland General‘how Money Launderers Sponsor Terrorism’ – Fraud Experts by Nagisa(op): 1:07am On Apr 04, 2017
Directly or indirectly, money launderers are the top financiers of terrorism, fraud experts have said.

Speaking through the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), the experts observed that looters are involved because sources of funds for terrorists come through charity, personal donations and through sympathetic organizations, giving terrorists succour for funds that come out of illicit transactions.
According to the Nation, the experts spoke through the president of the association, Dr Godwin Oyedokun during a training of its members in Lagos.

According to Oyedokun, anyone who gets his money through a corrupt means will want to spend it without being caught, they devise various means through which to move funds out of the country.

Most times, these things are done deliberately and moved to areas where terrorist use them to finance and carry out their heinous acts.

He further noted that there is no doubting that there is a nexus between financial crimes, money laundering and terrorism.

He said: “Money laundering on the onset used to do with only drug dealers and petty criminals. Now, it is a pandemic because politicians are getting involved; competing for whose figure will be larger than the other.

“Commonwealth of countries are stolen and moved to other counties that never worked for it, leaving the source countries poor and worse off.

“Worldwide, the effect of money laundering is devastating and used in financing terrorists. It is affecting economies of nations.”

He faulted that none has yet been effectively brought to book on the corruption paddle.

Another forensic expert, Dan Ogbonna, who delivered a paper on same issue, said the training is to teach its members the anatomy of fraud and how to profile it and prevent it. Also what dimension it can come and how it can be detected.

To him, in fraud related matters, prevention is better than detection and it is quite cheaper to prevent than to detect.

“So, we are teaching our members now to identify bribery that does not pass through a financial system.

“Also, because other fraudulent activities may be easy to trace, but bribery may not, especially bribery that passes through the unofficial channel.Hand to hand delivery bribes as compared to banks transfer that can be traced.”

Ogbonna, who is the financial controller of a group of manufacturing conglomerates and a member of ACFE, warned that the country is not giving the issue of bribery the kind of seriousness it deserves. He described it as ‘mysterious and complex’.

“Fraud examiners are gatekeepers and have to be very vigilant. They need to sit every transaction carefully and be aware of the many local and international legislations of how money is moved. They need to be aware of the trend and various methodologies of money laundering.”

On the issue of the Paris Club Fund found in the Governors’ Forum account, he noted that Nigeria has become a complicated nation where the more you look, the less you see.

“A lot a people need to be questioned on that and a lot of answers are required.

“If a particular fund is supposed to be for the official purpose, it should by no means get into another account.”

“The money is losing its value and also the interest that it would have generated is lost to bankers crediting such into another account.”

Oyedokun was happy with the number of turn of whistleblowers urging that people come out more.

“Let us not look at the percentage reward aspect of it, but the general and invisible reward that if the system is ok, we will all walk safely in the country.

“The names that have been called out in corruption should be a signal to others not to be caught in the corruption web. It is a deterrence strategy in the right direction that can be improved upon.”

He said though the government is yet to commission the Association on its expertise, it is carrying out independent advocacy.
