The Effect of Smoke on Brooding Chicks


Many people want to brood chicks and many are already into brooding of chicks but they find it hard to regulate the smoke coming from either the charcoal or lantern.



They are so much in a hurry to generate heat for their chicks.



In case you dont understand how it works, it takes time for heat to circulate in your brooding house, that is why you have to be there regularly to check your chicks at any interval of 30 minutes or hourly.



The heat will eventually circulate all your brooding house but i must say, you have to excercise patience .



For those who are always in a hurry to generate or want to circulate the heat in a short period of time. Well, the smoke generated from the heat sources affects your chicks in one way or the other.

The Cheapest Heat Source during Brooding 


I know i have talked about a lot on brooding in this platform. I think it is time i update you on the cheapest form of brooding.






I always make sure that my article are current, practical.


I bought a new Day Old and was hoping to use the normal Lantern as a source of heat but to my surprise, Kerosene is even more expensive than petrol or gas.


I bought Keresene what N2,000. and i cant use it for 2 days, can you Inagine that?


The Money is quiet small but it drird up faster than i thought, i have to use more lanterns and kerosene to generate all the require heat by my day Old.


I must confess, i Switched to Charcoal.

Charcoal is 3000 per bag. All i needed is a small kerosene to start the first fire after which i continue to add charcoal at an interval of 30 minutes.



Charcoal pot, one pot of charcoal can heat up 50 to 100 Chicks.


Just that you need to remove the charcoal and blow it every 30 minutes so that the ashes will be blown out, also blowing off the ashes will make sure that the red charcoal will not turn black.

Substituting Maize with Sweet Potato




The demand for maize is always in the higher side, believe me its not coming down anytime soon.






We as Farmers and Nutritionist are now looking for the best substitute for Maize. We have talked about wheat offal in one or two of our article, if you have been following us on www.nagro.com.ng




Wheat offal is more of Fibre, and they act as fillers. To make the feed plenty, but it can cause watery droppings when it is much in the feed plus it doesnt have much energy as compared to maize.




Some Farmers have tried using cassava as a substitute for Maize, but i have to give it to you, the level of anti nutritive factor is high and thus make cassava impossible to substitute for Maize. 





Though some farmers are using it at a very low quantity in their feed formulation.

Fact about eating a Dead Chicken

Am not a Pastor and so i would not tell you what to do. But am a Farmer and we are looking at it from a science perspective.



Dead and Live chicken that you kill are not that different but they are difference.


Live chicken was killed by you while the dead chicken was killed by disease or naturally.



Just like human beings, some chicken are to have a short life span, with no reason or the other, they just die.


The taste of a live chicken would definitely be sweeter than a dead chicken.


What make live chicken more tasty?


Simply because we killed it, the blood in the veins are drain out. If not all, 70% of the blood are out of the body.


Secondly reason why Live chicken that is killed is more sweeter than dead chicken is because of the tenderness, the softness will make all the sauces like maggi, flavor etc to sink into the chicken, making it more sweet.

Have tried and tried to see if i can see something similar or related to this topic on the internet, but lo and behold, I couldn't find any.



Every one was busy talking about the effects of light on chicken which we know already and those who dont know will know that too much of light increase aggression in chicken which may lead to Cannibalism.



But nobody talks about the importance of sunlight.




Someone is asking if poultry needed the sunlight for production of cholophyll?  Or do they needed the Vitamin C?

Egg yolk peritonitis 


Egg yolk peritonitis is commonly diagnosed in laying hens when yolk from a developing egg or an incompletely shelled or ruptured egg is deposited within the body cavity (the coelom).




 Normally, the developing egg passes from the bird’s single ovary (generally on the left side of the body) into the single tube-like oviduct (salpinx) and then out of the body, through the vent, as a fully shelled egg.





The yolk material that is released into the coelomic cavity then causes inflammation of the peritoneum (the thin layer of tissue lining the coelom and internal organs) and typically the development of fluid within the coelom.




 The yolk material can become infected with bacteria (most commonly E. coli) that can then spread into the bloodstream, causing a secondary, potentially life-threatening infection in critical organs such as the kidneys, liver, and heart.
