CHICKEN FEED FORMULA ��
To formulate feeds, farmers have to use the Pearson Square method. In this method, the digestible crude protein (DCP) is the basic nutritional requirement for any feed preparation for all animals and birds.
Now, assuming that a farmer wants to make feed for their chicken using this method, they have to know the crude protein content of each of the ingredients they want to use to make their feed.


The following are the DCP values for each of the common ingredients used in feed making:
Whole maize — 8.23%
Soya — 45%
Fishmeal (omena) — 55%
Maize bran — 7%
Sunflower — 35%
Each category of chicken has its nutritional requirement. For example, if we want to make feed for layers, the feed should have at least 18 per cent crude protein.

Biosecurity is a way of preventing spread of disease in your farm. While hygiene refers to how neat and clean your poultry house and environment is.



We know that poultry is not for lazy people but we ended up seeing poultry house or farmers as dirty people or place to be. It shouldn't be.


For Biosecurity and Hygiene, some steps must be put in place which are not limited to the following ways




Reduce the way people visit your Farm. Have visited some farms in the past and I still visit farms and I know the way some big farms made a boundary for visitors, as a visitor of a farm, you have limited access to some part of The farm. Have been to some farm and they don't even allow me to enter, I just stay at the gate. While some farms have sections for visitors where you can peep and see the chickens from afar but not too close.

Sorting of Catfish


Sorting of catfish is one of the important thing to do in catfish business. Some can't relate with the term while others might just go well with the word.



Sorting of catfish in a lay man's term or in a more simple term is the separation of bigger catfish from smaller catfish

Sorting has to be done in catfish from time to time, let's say in an interval of 3 weeks or a month interval.



Why do we sort catfish?
The answer to the question is not that hard at all, the reason for sorting catfish is to promote equal growth among catfish, fish of the same size would be on the same pond together, no big or bigger fish would be dominating the pond, all fish would be equal, not afraid of any big fish, so the catfish eat together, play together and grow together there by reducing or eliminating cannibalism of catfish I.E that is, catfish eating another catfish.



Bare in mind that before three weeks, some catfish are already bigger than other catfish, hence you need to sort your catfish.



The bigger catfish or adult don't really have problems but there is problems when they are growing up.


Sorting of catfish is not for lazy farmers because it consume time.

Pen (Poultry House) preparation before arrival of Chicks

After you must have clean the poultry house using this link Here



Then we are ready to receive or purchase a new day old chick.
Don't forget that for your safety, please use the above link and save yourself the death of your chicks.
Let's assume you have done the necessary things.



Few hours to the arrival of Chicks Or a day to arrival, please make sure that the poultry house or brooding house is well heated. To do this, make sure you provide heat to the house either by lantern, charcoal, gas heater, electricity bulb that produce heat or any other medium you can use to warm the room.



Make sure the poultry house is well covered, so that the heat would circulate very well and no external breeze or air is coming in.



The room should be well heated and the heat must have circulate evenly round the house.



Make sure the flooring materials like wood shaving, news paper etc are not wet, make sure the floor are well covered with flooring materials. The flooring materials act as a bed materials for the chicks and prevent direct contact with the floor which may also be cold. So, using the flooring materials also give them warmth.

Preparation and cleaning  of a Poultry House



We are still going to write on bio security and hygiene to be put or used in a poultry house but first let's talk about preparation of a poultry house, some of us have already reared chicken in a pen or poultry house before,  and we want to stock another set or batch of poultry animals (chicken). 




 What are we going to do to secure the birds and our investment? 



You can't just take the chickens inside the poultry house without any preparation. Some people don't know that we have to prepare the poultry house.  Well now we know. 




Let's start with the poultry equipment like the drinkers and feeders,  how are we going to clean them?  We can use liquid soap and water to clean the feeders and drinkers, after which we would placed them inside the sun,  why are we putting them inside the sun?  


Soap can kill animal and we can't tell if there is any residue of soap in the drinkers or feeders,  or may be there are some germs which are not yet washed or killed by the soap,  the sun might kill them. 




Drying in the sun also give you less risk. 

Some people prefer washing with some chemicals which would be discussed later on this write up.

Some would rather ask why is their layers eggs with no shell?



The answer is because the feed you are giving your chicken or laying chicken is lacking Calcium or the level of calcium in the feed is too low and could not meet the level of calcium needed by the laying chicken.



When a chicken is laying egg, it needed calcium for itself and it needed calcium for the egg.



I don't want to go deep into how do chicken needed calcium for itself but lete sight an example, if the weight of the chicken is heavy than what the leg can carry, the chicken would become lame or would not be able to work..



This is an example of the chicken needing the calcium for itself. For strong bones.

Well,  this is not an in depth talk on the treatment of catfish but an intro to treatment of catfish. 





Catfish are animals that don't often fall sick and that is because they are adaptive in nature. 



The fews reasons that may cause your catfish not to perform better are not limited to changes in water temperature,  oxygen level,  light and darkness control etc. 




We cant talk about it all here but what can you do when you noticed that your catfish is not doing well? 



The answer to that question is simple. 


You need to have a treatment / isolation pond : This is where you would put sick catfish,  the treatment / isolation pond must not be deep so that you can observe the fish closely. 



Anytime you notice your catfish not doing well,  may be not eating according to their normal ration of feed,  you might need to move them out of that pond. Wash the pond and expose the pond to some sunlight while the catfish are in isolation pond. 



Observe your catfish in isolation pond. 

What are you observing?  What percentage of the catfish are eating?  Are they swimming well or floating on top of the water?

Brooding is the raising of chicken from day old till the time they grow feathers and are able to produce heat by the feathers, till the time they don't need external heat to keep them warm.


When it comes to brooding, we have brooding materials. Which are


Wood shavings : This is somehow curve, not dusty, sometimes it comprises of small small light woods. They are good for flooring of the brooding house. The shavings are not too small and there fore would not enter the nose of the small chicken, chicks .
If anything should block the nose of the chicks, it would lead to another problem.

Newspaper / carton : These are also used for flooring the brooding house, it is based on preference whether you would use wood shavings or newspaper.
Some people don't like the stress of removing the shavings every week or 3 days interval, the stress of sweeping the wood shaving, looking for wood shavings, spreading wood shavings etc. So they prefer newspaper.
When using newspaper, you just remove the paper and place a new one.
