A conclave of world leaders, international media, and other delegates who thronged the United Nation’s General Assembly’s seventieth session were nowhere to be found when Muhammadu Buhari, President of Nigeria, addressed the general debate on September 28, and the poor outing was conspicuously appalling. What seemed like a mass boycott of President Buhari’s speech may be associated with his nonchalant attitude and a lack of seriousness in communicating severe security issues related to the Boko Haram killings, it was gathered. International Guardian’s correspondent in New York for the event reported a lonely frazzled speaker, sweltering as he imperceptibly picked his words from a written script. “At some point, I thought he was talking to himself,” said Joel McHenry, another delegate, a Canadian-based observer who spoke to our newsroom. Another delegate associated with the United States office of the Secretary of States categorically labelled Buhari’s absence and attitude over issues of security as “utterly dismissive.” “World leaders are so engaged with regions serious about their agenda, and Nigeria has not shown that enthusiasm,” he said. In July, International Guardian reported how President Muhammad Buhari’s exorbitant visit to the United State emitted some horrible stakes causing the White House to voice out complete disappointed about a total lack of preparedness by the Nigerian contingent to discuss vital issues about both countries. The Obama administration had also decried a poor presentation of policy needs and updates made by the Nigerian leader. President Buhari’s UN outing has equally been riddled with controversy over poor logistics, lackadaisical preparations, and process incomprehensibility. First, he had missed a United Nation’s meeting in which countries affected by Boko Haram's violence pleaded for assistance for those displaced by the insurgency. In a region where millions are being displaced by the Islamist outfit, Nigeria’s absence from this meeting was seen as blow to a global collaboration for assistance over war against terrorism. For instance, a few weeks ago, the Geneva-based International Organization for Migration estimated that at least 2.1m Nigerians have been displaced since the group began violence in 2009. Another embarrassment yet plagued President Buhari's outing when he was prevented from meeting Pope Francis for arriving late at the facility, and aimlessness using the wrong gate. As a process, presidents, governmental heads, and delegates are expected to arrive early for UN engagements, and facilitators often brief diplomatic officers ahead of time to avoid process failures. It was not clear what happened in President Buhari’s case as his entourage, handlers, and the Nigerian embassy staff were busy trading blames about the shameful outings. It may be recalled that in July, the President fired all non-career Nigerian ambassadors in foreign |

http://af.reuters.com/article/topNews/idAFKCN0RQ06420150926 UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations, Chad, Niger and Cameroon appealed on Friday for help for millions of people in the Lake Chad Basin region forced to flee the violence of Boko Haram and hit with repeated droughts and floods that have brought malnutrition and disease. But while the radical Islamist militants operate out of Nigeria and U.N. aid chief Stephen O'Brien said that is where most people have been displaced by their attacks, Nigeria did not send anyone to the United Nations event. U.S. and European Union diplomats said they were disappointed that Nigeria did not attend the event chaired by O'Brien on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly. The Nigerian U.N. mission was not immediately available to comment on its absence. A regional offensive by Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon earlier this year drove Boko Haram from much of the territory it held in northern Nigeria. But the militants have since struck back with a renewed wave of deadly raids and suicide bombings. "These (displaced) families are being used as ammunition because it is the children that are used as bombers in markets and in train stations," said Chad's Foreign Minister Moussa Faki Mahamat. "Trade is virtually wiped out in this area." Several U.N. diplomats at the event warned that the aid emergency in Lake Chad Basin risked being forgotten amid other humanitarian crises in Syria, Yemen and South Sudan. Niger Prime Minister Brigi Rafini said the region was in the midst of a "genuine disaster. |
Facebook Twitter Google+ LinkedIn Reddit Print By Emmanuel Elebeke The World Health Organization has applauded the recent appointment of former minister of Finance and coordinating minister of Economy, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as the Chair-elect of the Board of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala is a renowned development economist and former Nigerian Finance Minister. She is expected to bring more than 33 years of her development and financial expertise to the Gavi Board at a critical period for immunization in developing countries. Earlier this year, WHO warned that vaccines are not being delivered equitably or reliably and that only one out of the six key vaccination targets for 2015 is currently on track, the introduction of under-utilized vaccines, a target to which Gavi has contributed significantly. In taking up the position of Board Chair, Dr Okonjo-Iweala will succeed Dagfinn Høybråten, a former Norwegian Minister of Health and current Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers. She will also work closely with Dr. Flavia Bustreo, WHO Assistant Director-General for Family, Women’s and Children’s Health, who is Vice Chair of Gavi. Since 2000, Gavi has supported the immunization of more than half a billion additional children, leading to seven million future deaths being averted. WHO is one of the founding members of Gavi, a public-private partnership formed in 2000, to address global inequities in access to and coverage of available lifesaving vaccines. Over the next 5 years, WHO will continue to lead collective efforts to achieve and sustain universal vaccination coverage as outlined in the Decade of Vaccines Global Vaccine Action Plan. Similarly, the Global Fund has congratulated Gavi and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on her appointment as Board Chair of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. The Global Fund said it is expecting Dr. Okonjo-Iweala to bring her experience in fiscal management to her new post with Gavi, including experience as managing director of the World Bank from 2007 to 2011. As a key partner, the Global Fund looks forward to a productive working relationship with Dr. Okonjo-Iweala. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala brings deep experience and insight in global health issues to her new role at Gavi. The Global Fund anticipates close collaboration, particularly in our joint work around systems for health, women’s and girls’ health. The Global Fund also recognizes the important global health contribution of Dagfinn Høybråten, Gavi’s outgoing chair and former Norwegian health minister. During Mr. Høybråten’s tenure, Gavi made strong progress towards its five-year target of immunizing nearly a quarter of a billion children between 2011 and 2015. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/09/who-global-fund-applaud-okonjo-iwealas-appointment/ |

A nation is as transparent as its media. A nation is also as corrupt as its media. The more corrupt a nation's media is, the more corrupt that nation is also. In fact, the corruption of a nation is directly proportional to the corruption of its media. You can also replace the word 'media' with 'social critics' and the import of the sentence is still the same. Why am I reflecting on the media and social critics today? A few weeks ago, we were regaled with news of allegations of Babatunde Fashola's corrupt acts- the 2 boreholes that cost N139m, the untraceable construction project in Onikan that cost N1.2b, the personal website he upgraded with N78m and the several choice plots of land he hurriedly allocated at the end of his tenure which Ambode has reversed. When 'they' saw that not only will Fashola be demystified but even their own Ashiwaju may win the battle but he may never win the war, Ashiwaju released a statement to bury the case. How many people remember the case of the 2 beds in Ekiti Government House purchased at N50m each by Fayemi? How about the N3.3b Ekiti Government House? How about the role being reversed and Ayo Fayose were to be the one who purchased the beds or built the mansion? Where was the outrage when the news broke that Aregbesola purchased a helicopter? Does anyone know the cost of the helicopter? And this same Ogbeni will be shouting about transparency and accountability? Can you imagine how the heavens will fall if Ayo Fayose purchases a helicopter? Or if he tries to build an airport in Ekiti like Ogbeni is doing in Osun? Now, not even a single media outfit has carried the news in the past one week. The case has been buried and we are back to feasting on Jonathan and his 'goons'. Sahara Reporters? Ha, don't mention. Premium Times? One day, they will just wake up from their self-induced slumber and do FACT CHECK. Vocal social media critics like Pius Adesanmi and others released updates of convenience. Their words were carefully crafted- no bile, no disgust, no angst. They refused to even mobilize their social media followers like they did against other politicians not in their good books. Curiously, Femi Falana was also quiet. Did you hear any word from Festus Keyamo on "Fasholagate" while it lasted? Did the revered Prof Itse Sagay say anything? What of even the most respected Wole Soyinka? Does it mean corruption is corruption only when it is carried out by Diezani and the likes but the definition changes when 'poster boy' Fashola is involved? Social activism died and was buried with Gani Fawehinmi. That is why I can't be bothered if Femi Falana is made the Attorney General of the nation today. The man in him worships at Ashiwaju's temple. The real Femi Falana died a long time ago. Fashola is back on the speaking circuit. His sins have been forgiven since Ashiwaju has said so. No one has investigated further. No questions asked. The list of contract awards has disappeared from Lagos State's website. Case is closed since the quarrel has been settled. Let's all start calling Jonathan a thief again. Yes, we only have one thief in Nigeria. And his name is Jonathan. That is one of the reasons I don't believe this government (FG) will fight corruption successfully. Let Buhari commit a faux pas and the media will be used against him to bring him down- just the same way the media was used against Jonathan. And for the social activists? They are waiting for Ashiwaju's whistle. Bayo Adeyinka |

You are not so blind with patriotism, that you can’t face reality. Wrong is wrong, no matter who does it or says it-—- Malcom X I AM one of those , who never wished that APC, with President Muhammadu Buhari, PMB, would lead this country. It was not because we supported the ways of the ruling PDP at that time, but because we had our fears, about that change slogan, some of which are now manifesting in PMB’s government. Our fears included first, that as Christians, the killings and burning of churches will continue under PMB, but will be seriously suppressed from the public. Today, we hear less of the wickedness against Christians in the north. We do not understand why this is so, while Boko Haram has continued to kill in the North East. Over three months of APC government, Chibok Girls are yet to be recovered, for example, confirming our fear that the whole noise about Chibok Girls was to push GEJ, out of power. Politics apart, we are all parents, and those parents, who chose to use the Chibok Girls as propaganda instruments should be hiding their heads in shame, because politics should be fair, and honest, with some integrity. Our second fear was that PMB has been portrayed as a hater of the Igbos, and that he would not only push the South East to the back bench in his policies as President, but would also initiate actions to Islamise that zone that voted massively for the PDP. In Imo State, which is presently APC, their Governor was generally regarded as having betrayed the Igbo man. Today, that fear has proved genuine, as Governor Okorocha, is the one calling for calm among Ndigbo, in the wake of the appointment by PMB of his Kitchen Cabinet members, to the complete exclusion of the the South East. Governor Okorocha, and his colleagues in politics without identity, would have seen by now that they backed the wrong horse as Ndigbo. If out of 42 appointments of persons who would have close contact with PMB almost on daily basis, not one Igbo man qualified, in terms of merit and confidence by PMB, what else do they want the man to say? Is the message not clear ? The best known method for Nigerian Leaders to kill any project is to subject it to what they call ‘a review’. The review of the second Niger bridge is to tell those who are honest to themselves that the project is dead under PMB, and no thanks to the Governor of Edo State, who may claim to be fighting corruption, but his attacks against that project has made him a manifest instrument in the hands of the enemies of Ndigbo. He may have his reasons for teaming up with Igbo haters, my only concern is for Ndigbo who have failed to read this hand writing on the wall. Our third fear was that PMB would islamise the South East. The first shot from him was the transfer of Boko Haram suspects from Maiduguri to Ekwulobia in Anambra State. In spite of the furore that followed that decision, we are yet to confirm what government has done to relocate those men. The matter seems to have died down, with the usual ignominy with which they treat issues that concern Ndigbo generally. The recent alert issued by the DSS and the Army about presence of Boko Haram agents in Lagos and the South East, leaves it up to the people to decide what to do to keep terror out of their regions, no matter what politicians say. Thirdly, we feared that PMB would kill the implementation of the Confab Report, simply because the South East among others has something to gain from it. It ought to be obvious that the whole efforts to swing power back to the north were to prevent power from getting to Ndigbo, who rather than weep, should brace up boldly, work harder to put their houses in order, and ensure that come 2019, their earnest expectations shall not be cut off, not even by the common sense revolutionists in the South West. Just like we say in Igbo land, the masquerade that blocks the road upon sighting me, will not shift grounds when he sees others too. Igbo haters will not change till their judgment by God comes upon them suddenly. Today, all we get are denials of electoral promises, ranging from the election campaign promise that the Price of Petrol would be reduced to N40/Litre if elected, the second Niger bridge for the South East, the provision of thousands of jobs for our teeming un employed youth within the first 100 days, to the promise of being the President for all Nigerians if elected. We are faced with the grim reality of petroleum subsidy removal, Naira exchange rates slides to all time low, while we wait for our mechanic to assemble his tools and men from the north, to come and repair the sick vehicle we call Nigerian economy. They will need 100 days to assemble tools, 100 days to remove the tyres, 200 days to remove and repair the engine, 200 days to sort out the gear box, 100 days for the electrical and fuel supply system, 100 days to panel beat the vehicle, 100 days to spray it with a new paint, then 100 days to find a suitable northerner to test drive the refurbished vehicle. Ndigbo, this brings us to a total of 1000 days, and that is two years and seven months, thus, the game will continue till 2019, with nothing in it for you, except noise, propaganda, fear, intimidation, denials and hardship. This type of change cannot favour Ndigbo, who must ignore it, no matter what is done or said, to provoke them. Let the changers face the terrorists, and don’t give them the pleasure to spill Igbo blood in the name of Biafra again. Even when their hirelings try to create social tension in your zone, just read between the lines and ignore them, because in this Nigeria, this phase shall pass away also, and Ndigbo shall prevail. Mr Clement Udegbe, a legal practitioner, wrote from Lagos. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/09/weep-not-ndigbo/#sthash.FhfvRNuV.dpuf |
