You need to provide the following before you can import/Export your dog/cat into Nigeria:
1. Copy of Health certificate attesting the health status of the pet named, signed and stamped by your Veterinarian and official veterinarian from the exporting country.
2. Copy of current Rabies vaccination certificate that is not more than a year.
3. Copy of laboratory result for serology test

The above help facilitate your import permit.Total cost is dependent on a lot of factors; Age/size of dogs, ground logistics involved, micro chipping, crate type, preferred airline,vet fees and clearing costs

There are cats everywhere: you need to be specific about what you are looking for. If it's a mongrel you want, go to any major settlement or market; with less than 2000 Naira, you will get one.

Nice one here @op. Maybe you should list the best breeds to buy from your current location. Looks like Caucasian Ovcharka and German Shepherd are the predominant dogs there. There are lots of superb breeds of dogs in South Africa, and freight cost is less.

Interesting post here, but the heading could have been better put. Let me explain.

Technically, there are no 'legitimate' canine breeders in Nigeria, this is because there is no law regulating the industry yet, neither is there a robust database of purebred dogs. The Rottweiler, Boerboel and German Shepherd Dog associations/clubs in Nigeria derive their 'legitimacy' from foreign bodies.

What we do have in abundance are LOTS of Puppy Millers, Backyard breeders and a very few hobby breeders.

I go out of my way to explain to folks that I am not a breeder (though at no point in time do I own less than 8 purebred dogs at a time, and they have bred unauthorized before), I am an animal behaviorist & pet broker who happens to be a dog lover. The refusal of majority of dog owners to make this distinction is what has brought us to where we are.
