Health / South Africa Bans Alcohol Consumption And Sales Again To Combat Covid-19. by naijastable(m): 7:18am On Jul 13, 2020
South Africa has introduced new restrictions, including another ban on alcohol sales, to help contain the spread of coronavirus.

A night-time curfew has been imposed, and the wearing of masks outdoors is now compulsory.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said the alcohol ban - South Africa's second this year - would take pressure off the national healthcare system.

It comes as total infections exceed a quarter of a million.

Deaths resulting from coronavirus have also risen to more than 4,000, and government projections estimate this could rise to 50,000 by the end of the year.

South Africa remains the hardest-hit country on the continent, and earlier this week recorded its highest-ever single-day increase in cases. Nearly half of them were in Gauteng, a province that's become the outbreak epicentre.

In a public address, Mr Ramaphosa acknowledged "most" people had taken action to help prevent the spread, but he said there were still some who acted "without any responsibility to respect and protect each other".

"There are a number of people who have taken to organising parties, who have drinking sprees, and some who walk around crowded spaces without wearing masks," said the president.

Mr Ramaphosa said the new measures were being introduced to help the country to weather the storm of coronavirus, and a state of emergency would be extended until 15 August. The night-time ban would be in place from 21:00 to 04:00.

The government has also made 28,000 hospital beds available for Covid-19 patients. But President Ramaphosa said the country still faced a "serious" shortage of more than 12,000 healthcare workers, including nurses, doctors and physiotherapists.

The alcohol ban comes just weeks after another three-month ban was lifted in an effort to prevent drunken fighting, cut domestic violence and eliminate weekend binge-drinking prevalent across South Africa.

Doctors and police say the previous ban contributed to a sharp drop in emergency admissions to hospital. But the country's brewers and wine makers complained they were being driven out of business.

Foreign Affairs / China Is A Great Threat To US Says FBI Director-naijastable.com.ng by naijastable(m): 12:32pm On Jul 08, 2020
The director of the FBI has said that acts of espionage and theft by China's government pose the "greatest long-term threat" to the future of the US.

Speaking to the Hudson Institute in Washington, Christopher Wray described a multi-pronged disruption campaign.

He said China had begun targeting Chinese nationals living abroad, coercing their return, and was working to compromise US coronavirus research.

"The stakes could not be higher," Mr Wray said.

"China is engaged in a whole-of-state effort to become the world's only superpower by any means necessary," he added.

In a nearly hour-long speech on Tuesday, the FBI director outlined a stark picture of Chinese interference, a far-reaching campaign of economic espionage, data and monetary theft and illegal political activities, using bribery and blackmail to influence US policy.

"We've now reached a point where the FBI is now opening a new China-related counterintelligence case every 10 hours," Mr Wray said. "Of the nearly 5,000 active counterintelligence cases currently under way across the country, almost half are related to China."

The FBI director mentioned a programme called "Fox Hunt", which he said President Xi Jinping had "spearheaded" and he said was geared at Chinese nationals living abroad seen as threats to the Chinese government.

"We're talking about political rivals, dissidents, and critics seeking to expose China's extensive human rights violations," he said. "The Chinese government wants to force them to return to China, and China's tactics to accomplish that are shocking."

He continued: "When it couldn't locate one Fox Hunt target, the Chinese government sent an emissary to visit the target's family here in the United States. The message they said to pass on? The target had two options: return to China promptly, or commit suicide."

The programme was originally begun in 2015 to target people accused of corruption and has reportedly led to the capture of thousands of fugitives.

However, reports of extraordinary rendition of political opponents by Beijing have multiplied in recent years, starting with Gui Minhai, one of a group of Hong Kong booksellers who disappeared in 2015 and resurfaced in Chinese custody. Unlike the others, Mr Gui disappeared abroad - in Thailand - rather than from Hong Kong itself.

China is fast becoming a new kind of threat to the West, not so much because of its growing military capabilities - though that is a factor - but because in economic and technical terms it is already a peer competitor of the United States, and a peer competitor in a very different kind of world.

Nineteenth Century great powers competed more or less on equal terms but operated in a far less integrated international system. In the second half of the 20th Century, the Soviet Union was a peer military competitor of the United States, but with a relatively weak economy largely isolated from the wider international system.

China, however, has huge and growing economic muscle. It shares much of the same economic space with the West and its dominance of crucial supply chains - think medical PPE for example - only enhances its power.

The level of integration of today's globalised world and the importance of data and information only act as force multipliers for Beijing's overt and covert global reach.

Presentational grey line
In the unusual address, Mr Wray asked Chinese-born people living in the US to contact the FBI if Chinese officials target them seeking their return.

The Chinese government has defended this programme in the past, saying it is part of a legitimate anti-corruption effort.

The threat posed by China will be further addressed by the US attorney general and secretary of state in coming weeks, Mr Wray said.

The address comes amid heightened tensions between the US and China.

US President Donald Trump has been highly critical of China amid the coronavirus outbreak, repeatedly blaming the country for the global pandemic. In another move, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said this week that the administration was looking at banning Chinese apps - including the hugely popular TikTok.

The apps "serve as appendages of the Chinese Communist Party's surveillance state", he said.

Celebrities / Justin Bieber Files $20 Million Defamation Lawsuit Against Women Over Rape Case by naijastable(m): 6:28pm On Jun 27, 2020
Justin Bieber has filed a $20 million defamation lawsuit against two women who accused him earlier this week of sexual assault.

The two women posted the allegations on their respective Twitter accounts. Bieber's lawsuit, which was filed Thursday, calls the allegations "fabricated." CNN has obtained a copy of the lawsuit.

One of the women, who is listed in the suit as Jane Doe-2 and identified as "Kadi" on Twitter, claims Bieber assaulted her early on the morning of May 5, 2015 at a hotel in New York City.

Bieber's complaint calls the allegations "factually impossible" and says they are "contradicted by her own prior written statements, are supported only by falsified or faked texts, and her allegations are a complete fabrication for the self-stated purpose of garnering fame and attention, and there are numerous witnesses to contradict Kadi's malicious lies."

The second woman, listed as Jane Doe-1 and identified as "Danielle" in the complaint, accused Bieber of assaulting her on March 10, 2014 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin, Texas. She has since deleted her tweets.

Bieber's lawsuit refutes the allegation.

"Danielle fabricated her sexual encounter with Bieber at the Four Seasons Hotel because it was publicly reported that Bieber had dinner at the Four Seasons Restaurant on March 10, 2014 and presumed that Bieber was at the hotel because of the public reports of him dining at the restaurant," the filing continues. "However, even though Bieber went to the restaurant, he did NOT stay at the Four Seasons Hotel."

Bieber has also taken to social media to deny the allegations.

"Every claim of sexual abuse should be taken very seriously and this is why my response was needed," Bieber wrote in a tweet earlier this week. "However this story is factually impossible and that is why I will be working with twitter and authorities to take legal action."

Celebrities / Beyoncé And Jay-z Sued By Jamaican Artist Over Their Single 'black Effect' by naijastable(m): 6:02pm On Jun 27, 2020
Beyoncé Knowles Carter and her husband Jay-Z are being accused of not giving a Jamaican artist credit for her contribution to their single "Black Effect."

Lenora Antoinette Stines filed Tuesday in the United States District Court Central District of California to be compensated for copyright infringement, right of publicity and unjust enrichment. The suit is centered around the song "Black Effect" from the couple's joint 2018 album, "Everything is Love." Jay-Z's legal name is Shawn Carter and the album is credited to "The Carters."

According to the suit, a copy of which CNN obtained, Stines "is 68 years old and she is extremely well respected and highly regarded in the island of Jamaica, and throughout the world for her artistry and wisdom."

Stines alleges that she was approached in Jamaica by the couple in March of 2018 to help obtain dancers for a video meant to promote their album and tour.

Stines, who uses the title "Dr." in the lawsuit, said she supplied some dancers for the video and was also asked to speak about her thoughts on love in the video.

According to Stines, on the day she showed up to film the video she was told she "must sign" an agreement in order to participate. "When Dr. Stines inquired into the terms of the agreement, she was told that the agreement 'was just a standard document that everyone had to sign,'" the suit states. "She was then told not to 'worry, because the agreement was only going to be utilized so that her voice could be used in the Video.'"

Stines said that when she asked if she could snap a photo of the agreement to send to her son, who is an attorney in South Florida to review, she "was explicitly told that she could not send a picture of the agreement to anyone to review." The suit goes on to say that Stines was assured that the recording "would only be used in the video, which was said to be for promotional purposes."

But when the album came out in June 2018, "To the shock, horror and chagrin of Dr. Stines, the Project featured the unauthorized exploitation of her vocals on a song known as "Black Effect" (the "Recording")." "This discovery left Dr. Stines feeling violated," the suit states.

Stines' voice is featured in the first minute of the "Black Effect" song. She is seeking damages, legal fees, a portion of the publishing rights and a writer's credit for the single.

Foreign Affairs / Russia Holds World War Two Victory Parade Amidst Coronavirus Shadow. by naijastable(m): 12:48pm On Jun 24, 2020
Russia is celebrating its biggest public holiday, Victory Day, with a military parade in Moscow that was meant to be held on 9 May.

President Vladimir Putin reluctantly postponed the big annual celebration because of the coronavirus pandemic. It is 75 years since the then USSR defeated Nazi Germany. World War Two cost more than 20 million Soviet lives. Moscow's lockdown has eased this month, enabling the parade, featuring tanks and long-range missiles, to go ahead.
This year's event is special for President Putin because in a week's time Russia will hold a nationwide vote on constitutional amendments that are expected to pave the way for him to stay in power beyond 2024, when his current term expires.

The annual parade in Red Square is always an occasion for Mr Putin to harness Russian patriotic feelings, in a way reminiscent of Soviet times.
He has restored Cold War-era Soviet symbols, and in 2008 he reintroduced heavy weaponry in the parade. The black-and-gold wartime St George's ribbon is especially ubiquitous.

Nazi Germany surrendered to the Allies - Britain, the US and USSR - on 8 May 1945. But traditionally Russia and the other ex-Soviet republics mark the victory on 9 May.

Holding the delayed event on 24 June commemorates the victory parade staged by the USSR back in 1945. "Our duty is to remember that the Soviet people bore the brunt of fighting Nazism," the president said in his speech. "It was namely our people who were able to defeat the horrible, total evil."
Technically, mass gatherings are still banned in Moscow, which continues to record a stubbornly high number of new Covid-19 cases each day - more than 1,000 were reported on Tuesday, the eve of the parade. Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin has urged residents to stay at home and watch the parade on TV.

War veterans invited to attend were being spaced apart on the viewing stand, and authorities believe this enforced social distancing means they can watch without wearing masks. All those invited have been required to be tested for the virus. The military units taking part have been in quarantine during weeks of rehearsals, avoiding contact with anyone not directly involved in the event.

The parade was to feature some 13,000 military personnel, 234 armoured vehicles, and 75 aircraft performing the traditional flypast.

Units were taking part from most of the ex-Soviet republics, as well as from China, Mongolia and Serbia.

Military parades were also being held in other cities, including "hero cities" that saw the heaviest fighting in the Soviet "Great Patriotic War" against the Nazis.

Some major world leaders were to have attended the cancelled 9 May parade, including French President
Emmanuel Macron and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko are expected to attend this year, but few other European leaders will.

Foreign Affairs / Trump Extends Pause On Issuing Of Green Card Andsuspends Visas For Foreign Worke by naijastable(m): 9:33am On Jun 23, 2020
US President Donald Trump has extended a pause on some green cards and suspended visas for other foreign workers until the end of 2020.

High-skilled tech workers, non-agricultural seasonal helpers, au pairs and top executives will be affected.

The White House said the move will create jobs for Americans hurting economically due to the pandemic.

But critics say the White House is exploiting the coronavirus pandemic to tighten up immigration laws.

In a briefing for reporters, the administration said the freeze, in place through the end of the year, would impact about 525,000 people.

That includes an estimated 170,000 people blocked by the decision to extend a ban on some new green cards - which grants permanent residence to foreigners. The White House first announced it was halting those visas in April, an order that had been set to expire on Monday.

Existing visa holders are not expected to be affected under the new restrictions announced on Monday.

The order also applies to H-1B visas, many of which are granted to Indian tech workers. Critics say these visas have allowed Silicon Valley companies to outsource American jobs to lower-paid foreign employees. Last year, there were about 225,000 applications competing for 85,000 spots available through the H1-B visa programme.

The order will suspend most H-2B visas for seasonal workers, including those in the hospitality industry, except those in agriculture, the food processing industry and healthcare professionals.

The order will restrict J-1 short-term exchange visas, a category that includes university students and foreign au pairs who provide childcare. Professors and scholars are not included in the order. There will be a provision to request exemptions.

L visas for managers and other key employees of multinational corporations will also be suspended.

Health / Procedure To Take On How To Brush Your Teeth Properly. by naijastable(m): 12:35pm On Jun 22, 2020
YOU MIGHT HAVE BEEN BRUSHING YOUR TEETH IN THE WRONG WAY, CHECK HOW TO BRUSH YOUR TEETH.
An important part of good oral health is knowing how to brush and floss correctly. Healthy teeth do not only enable the person or an individual to look and feel good, they also make it possible to eat and speak properly. Thorough brushing each day removes plaques (an invisible mass of soft or yellow harmful layers of germs that live in the mouth and stick to the surface of the teeth). As not brushing in the right way may lead to ‘halitosis’ which is also known as bad breath and it is a condition in which there is a foul smelling of oral cavity more pronounced when the person is talking or breaths. Also, the other cause of halitosis includes untreated decayed tooth, ulcer or wound in the mouth, herpes, and disease of the nose, ear, throat and infections of the respiratory tract.
It has become a great problem in the society as several individuals or people have been flossing and brushing in the wrong way. Here is a procedure on how to brush properly
Gently brush the teeth on all sides with a soft bristle brush using fluoride toothpaste. Do a circular and short back and forth strokes ,take time to brush carefully along the gum line. Light brushing of the tongue also help to remove plaque and food debris. Also, don’t forget to
Brush twice in a day and floss daily.
Taking balance diet and limiting snacks between meals.
Using dental products that contain fluoride (Fluoride is commonly used in dentistry to strengthen enamel, which is the outer layer of your teeth. Fluoride helps to prevent cavities. It’s also added in small amounts to public water supplies in the United States and in many other countries. This process is called water fluoridation).
Making sure your kids or children less than 12 drink fluoridated water or take fluoride supplement if they live in a non fluoridated.

Business / China To Cancel Interest-free Loans To African Nations-naijastable.com.ng by naijastable(m): 10:22am On Jun 18, 2020
China will cancel interest-free loans to African countries that are due to mature by the end of 2020, President Xi Jinping has announced.

He told a China-Africa summit on Covid-19 on Wednesday that African nations hardest hit by the pandemic will also be granted an extension of the period of debt suspension.

The Chinese leader also urged Chinese financial institutions to hold "friendly consultations" with African nations "to work out arrangements for commercial loans with sovereign guarantees".

"China will work with the UN, WHO and other partners to assist Africa's response to Covid-19, and do it in a way that respects the will of Africa," President XI said

On the coronavirus pandemic, he said African countries will be among the first to benefit from a Chinese-made vaccine. China will also continue building hospitals across Africa.

It will also construct the headquarters of Africa Centre for Disease Control in Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa.

Sports / Guardiola Embarrassed By Treatment Of Black People-naijastable.com.ng by naijastable(m): 10:10am On Jun 18, 2020
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he is "embarrassed and ashamed" at the historic treatment of black people as the Premier League's return was marked by protests against racial injustice on Wednesday.

Players and coaches from all four sides in action took a knee prior to kick off to show their support for the Black Lives Matter campaign.

The action came in response to worldwide protests after the killing of African American George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis.

Black Lives Matter was also emblazoned on the back of shirts instead of player names.

"We should send a thousand million messages for the black people. It's more than 400 years we do what we do to these lovely people," Guardiola told Sky Sports.

"I'm embarrassed and ashamed of what the white people have done for the black people.

"Just because you are born a different colour, how people can think they are different? All the gestures are good and positive. Everything we can do to make it conscious, it is not acceptable.

"We have to do a lot of things for the black people which we have not done so far."

Raheem Sterling has been a leading campaigner in the fight against racism in football and the City winger backed the united front as a significant step forward.

"I see it as a massive step for the Premier League to allow something like that to happen," said Sterling.

"It shows we are going in the right direction."

Sterling scored his first goal of 2020 to open the scoring as City restarted with a 3-0 win over Arsenal.

The England international admitted his side took some time to get to grips with their new surroundings in front of an empty Etihad stadium and said he struggled to hold back from celebrating his goal too wildly with teammates.

"The first 10 minutes it was getting used to the atmosphere and getting the cobwebs off," said Sterling.

"We've got to remain within all the safety tips, but all the boys have tested negative in the past few days and we celebrated in the right manner."

Health / Oral Disease, tooth Ache And How To Prevent It. by naijastable(m): 5:01pm On Jun 15, 2020
COMMON ORAL DISEASE AND HOW TO PREVENT IT
The oral cavity consist of the lips, cheeks, tongue, teeth, gum, various structures attached to it and salivary gland which is responsible for the secretion of watery fluid called the saliva. Different disease and malformations can occur in any of these structures of the oral cavity, even though certain disease are more common among younger age while others are common at older age.
There is various classification of oral disease, some of which include:
INFECTION
There are millions of bacteria that live in the mouth which posses a great threat to the body immune system which when lowered due to Illness or other factors may affect the alveolar bone, teeth, gum and other factors.
TRAUMA
The lips, cheeks, teeth, tongue, and bony structures suffer from different trauma’s .some of which result from fall, fight and road rage causing fracture, tear, and crush of tissues concerned in addition to bleeding that may accompany the injury.
NEOPLASM
Tumor or abnormal growth can affect the mouth and its contents. Common risk factors are cigarette smoking or tobacco chewing, excessive alcohol consumption.

DEGENERATION
These are disease that arises as a result of old age such as natural tooth loss. Also, decreased salivary flow could predispose to dry mouth which results in dental caries commonly known as tooth ache.
TOOTH DECAY
This is commonly referred to as dental caries. It is one of the most common oral health problems. It is a slow process involving the localized destruction of the teeth often resulting into a hole or cavitation in the affected tooth/teeth. The process involves continuous demineralization of the tooth due to by-products of microorganism on fermentable carbohydrate in the individual’s tooth. Some bacteria in the dental plaque [an invisible mass of soft or yellow harmful layers of germs that live in the mouth and stick to the surface of the teeth. note: plaques are bacteria and not food particles.] are able to turn the sugar we eat into acid, which when slowly dissolves the tooth –first from enamel to dentin leading to formation of a hole and built of pains after a cold food or drink.
