Politics / Oritsejafor Hails Fg’s Fund For Boko Haram Victims by Naijavibz: 7:33am On Jul 20, 2014
The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, yesterday, hailed Federal Government’s new initiative to set up a special fund to cater for the needs of victims of insurgency in parts of the country.

Reacting on behalf of CAN and the entire Christian community in Nigeria to the cheery news, National President of the association, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, specially thanked President Goodluck Jonathan for taking such a bold and courageous step to care for the victims of insurgency in the northern part of the country. “The action is a further demonstration that President Jonathan is indeed the father of the nation and a father to all Nigerians irrespective of the background of the victims of the crisis; and the decision has demonstrated that the present administration is responsive to the plight of the people,” he stated.

According to Oritsejafor, “for long, it has been the conviction of CAN that victims of the
senseless killings and wanton destruction of property should be given some life-line in whatever name to be so called and we are glad that the President has heard our call and responded appropriately,” he added.

The CAN president believes that the fund will address a wide range of issues facing persons displaced by the crisis as well as provide the basis for a more comprehensive programme of rehabilitation and reintegration of the victims at the end of the crisis (insurgency).

Politics / #bringbackourgirls: My Advice To Boko Haram And President Jonathan— Malala by Naijavibz: 7:27am On Jul 20, 2014
To mark her 17th birthday, Malala Yousafzai, the young, precocious Pakistani girl who was shot and left for dead by the Taliban two years ago, visited Nigerian in solidarity with the over 200 girls abducted by members of the criminally- minded members of the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad, which in English means, “People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophet’s Teachings and Jihad”, and otherwise known as Boko Haram.

She met some of the girls who escaped from the group; and she also had audience with Nigeria’s Minister of State, Education, Nyesom Wike. But Wike, true to type, shot himself on the foot when he tried to explain the issue of out-of-school children. He said of the 10.5 children, nine million were from the North, to which Malala’s father pilloried him: “I don’t know about the system that is here, we only know that there are over 10.5 million children that are out of school. But it brings very bad name to the country”.

The issue is even if 10million of the out-of-school children are in the Delta Basin, they are still out-of-school children in Nigeria – the minister should have known that he was talking to people who are interested in best practices and not politics, the type he’s been playing in his home state of Rivers.
Below are excerpts of Malala’s modest intervention in a crisis that Nigeria’s leaders across the political divide have mishandled.

APPRECIATION
I thank the Nigerian people for the warm welcome. You are an incredible strong nation; you work every day to fight against your challenges through your unity, resilience and determination. Dear brothers and sisters, last Malala day, I told my story.

MY LIFE
Last Malala day, I spoke about my life in Pakistan. I spoke about the rise of terrorism and the ban of girl education there in my home town. I spoke about the Taliban that took on my life and attempt to silence me forever.

I will repeat what I said last year. Nothing changes in my life except days. Weakness, fears and hopelessness die. Strength, power and courage were born. When I was shot by the Taliban, the world stood up. I, Malala, was the cry I heard around the world. I received thousands of good wishes cards and letters from people. I believe that God saved my life because of people’s prayers.

Today, this Malala Day, I’m not here to tell my story because I am not the only child who has been target of extremism. There are thousands who are suffering from terrorism, from violence and do not have access to education. I speak for those children whose right to quality education has been snatched from them.

SOLIDARITY WITH MY NIGERIAN SISTERS
I speak for the 66 million girls who are out of school. This Malala Day is the day for education of every child and it is dedicated to my dear Nigerian sisters who are going through the same rigorous situation. I dedicate this day to my sisters in Nigeria.

I will begin with the story I am here to tell you about the girl whom I met yesterday. I am really sorry I cannot mention her name, but I will call her my sister. My sister comes from the Nigerian village of Chibok. She is 16 years old. One day, my sister was in school; some armed terrorists called Boko Haram came and tried to steal her dreams. They kidnapped her. But, she was one of the luckiest ones who escaped from the abduction.

Before that, her father got killed; and her mother and sister got injured in the unstable situation in the North of Nigeria. Since she escaped, because of insecurity, she can no more go to school and her fairest subject is biology; she wants to become a doctor.

100 DAYS OF CAPTIVITY
Every day, Boko Haram razes nearby villages to terrorize the people. Over 200 girls were kidnapped and since have not returned. Next week, it will be 100 days; 100 days since they were......

Politics / Confab Logjam: Ex-militants Plan Return To Creeks! by Naijavibz: 9:51am On Jul 18, 2014
WARRI—SOME groups in the Niger Delta are preparing to return to the creeks following the standoff at the national conference over resource control.

The Niger Delta People Salvation Front, NDPSF, led by Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo, in a statement, yesterday,

said: “We are stating that going back to the creeks may be inevitably preferable, rather than allow for the wealth of our people to be used to develop or rehabilitate a parasitic, barren yet ignorantly arrogant North.

“We are ready to mobilise our people from across the Niger Delta and even in Diaspora to stand up for definite showdown and direct action. The North must no longer be sustained at our expense. Our God-given resources belong to us and not Nigeria. The end of Lugard’s Nigeria is now,” spokesman of NDPSF, Rex Anighoro said.

“Let us state very emphatically that irrespective of the final determination of the national conference, our minimum expectation and demand as a people remains 100 per cent control of our resources or nothing.

“The national conference can go on and propose even 100 states, agree to rehabilitate and develop areas ravaged by insurgency and internal conflicts, agree to develop solid mineral resources and whatever, but let it be known that not a dime of the resources of the people of the Niger Delta should be factored into this odious compromise.

Politics / Extradition Of Ogwuche Nyanya Bomb blast Mastermind ! by Naijavibz: 9:39am On Jul 18, 2014
Ogwuche restates the importance of international cooperation in the fight against terrorism. The dispatch with which the extradition processes was concluded was remarkable.

Shortly after the last April 14 bombing of the park which Abuja-bound workers, traders and other passengers patronise, the Directorate of State Services, DSS, paraded five suspects who reportedly played leading roles in the attack that claimed more than 70 lives and injured about 250. Rufai Tsiga and Ogwuche were declared wanted.
Ogwuche, the son of a retired military officer, was later identified as a terror suspect who was earlier arrested but was released, according to DSS because of “intense pressure from human rights activists who alleged human rights violation”.

The security agencies said Ogwuche had fled to Sudan, a country with a thriving nursery for radical Islamists who have caused mayhem and made parts of Sudan ungovernable. Moves to extradite Ogwuche ran into an initial diplomatic blind end because there was no extradition protocol between the countries.

Politics / We’ve No Plan To Impeach Oshiomhole —PDP by Naijavibz: 9:28am On Jul 18, 2014
BENIN—THE Peoples Democratic Party,PDP, has said that it was not interested in the alleged move to impeach Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State, noting that the governor was free to do the work for which he was elected by the people.

The party, while reacting to the allegation by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, that N75 million was allegedly offered to each PDP lawmaker to impeach the governor, described the allegation as unfounded and a figment of “their troubled imagination.”

Edo State chairman of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih, who spoke to newsmen, yesterday in Benin, said: “I have heard the National Chairman of APC and the governor himself talk about impeachment in Edo State. The constitution states unequivocally in its relevant sections, the processes to be followed as far as impeachment is concerned.

“That it is only the elected representatives of the people that can impeach the governor of a state. So, if they feel that the governor of Edo State has committed impeachable offences, they should look at it. But for us as a party, we are not interested in his impeachment, he should continue to do the work for which he was elected by the Edo people.

Sports / Germans Ready To Make History – Loew by Naijavibz: 10:18pm On Jul 12, 2014
Joachim Loew says Germany is ready to write history by winning Sunday’s final to become the first European side to win the World Cup in the Americas.

The Germans take on Argentina in the World Cup final at Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Maracana Stadium with Loew hoping to win the nation’s fourth world title.

No European side has won any of the eight World Cups held in the Americas, but Loew says his side can write their names in the history books.

“Regardless of what has happened in the past, it is a matter of winning now and we know we can write history, because Latin American sides have been able to dominate on home soil,” said Loew....

Politics / I have Forgiven Those Planning My Impeachment – Nyako by Naijavibz: 10:09pm On Jul 12, 2014
Adamawa state governor, Murtala Nyako, said on Saturday 12 July that he had forgiven all those planning to impeach him from office.

Nyako said this while addressing his supporters who paid him a solidarity visit at his residence in Yola.

The governor appealed to his supporters and all well-meaning citizens of the state to remain calm and pray to God to protect them from falling along ethnic and religious lines.

He described those behind his planned impeachment as the enemy of peace and the people of the state.

Nyako said that legitimate sons and daughters of the state would never cause hardship on their brothers and sisters.

“Despite the unwarranted state of emergency enforced on the people of the state coupled with the dust-to-down-curfew, some irresponsible elements based in Abuja are trying to create additional hardship for the people,” he said...

Sports / Argentina Prays For Messi Goals by Naijavibz: 10:01pm On Jul 12, 2014
Everyone in Rosario has a tale to tell about Lionel Messi, the Argentinian city’s most famous son who rivals Pope Francis as a national icon.

Messi’s link to the city has made the people of the port city doubly nervous about Sunday’s World Cup final when their country take on Germany in Rio de Janeiro. The Barcelona striker has only scored four goals in the tournament so far.

“I hope that Messi becomes his old self again Sunday and hits a goal,” said Monica Domina who once taught the football genius.

Domina admitted she knows little about football, but she is still “anxious” about Sunday’s match.

Taxi driver Daniel Rodriguez is able to point out Messi’s former home in a working class district away from central Rosario. “Everyone else is second class,” he said.

“My grandson went to the same school as Messi and still remembers the little boy with his ball who everyone chased and noone could catch,” said 80-year-old Elsa Uhrig....

Politics / Terrorist Planning To Attack FCT Transport Service – Police by Naijavibz: 5:02pm On Jul 12, 2014
The Nigeria Police Force has said that credible intelligence at its disposal indicates that terrorists are plotting to carry out attacks on the Abuja transport sector.

The Force stated that the attacks which are intended to cause panic amongst residents and visitors alike are planned to be perpetrated through suicide bombings, or through the use of Improvised Explosive Devices concealed in luggages, bags, cans, and other receptacles.

A statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, in Abuja on Saturday said the Police High Command had ordered the FCT Commissioner of Police in particular and other CPs in adjoining States to beef-up security at major parks around Abuja and its environs.

The Police also enjoined the general public, particularly those within and outside the Federal Capital Territory to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons, objects, movements or activities to the Security Forces without delay.

It urged the citizens not to panic, noting that Security Forces are working round the clock to neutralize and effectively deal with the threat.

As part of additional efforts at forestalling the attacks and strengthening security around the transport sector, the Police High Command called on the management of motor parks to ensure that travelers and workers’ safety comes first.

It charged them to constantly conduct regular and routine scanning of their environments while insisting on carrying out a thorough search on passengers and their bags as well as vehicles entering and leaving their parks.

Meanwhile, the Police can be reached on the following hot lines: FCT Police Control Room - 07057337653, Force Intelligence Bureau Operations Room - 08139379245, 08075650624and National Emergency Line -112.

Sports / W’cup: 60 Experts To Review Ghana’s Poor Performance by Naijavibz: 4:36pm On Jul 11, 2014
Ghana’s Sports Ministry said it has invited 60 eminent football administrators for a retreat to review the country’s football administration.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mahama Ayariga, said in a statement on Friday in Accra.

“The two-day retreat, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, is expected to carve out a new national football strategy for the country,” Ayariga said.

He said it was being held by the Ministry of Youth and Sports in collaboration with the Ghana Football Association.

He said, ‘The group is made up of personalities with vast experiences in both the field of play and football management and administration in Ghana and abroad.

“The eminent personalities will generally reflect on developments in the performance of the country in competitive football and offer advice in fashioning out a national response strategy.

“This is the first of a series of meetings of eminent persons in the various disciplines of sports and personalities involved in youth development programs to help drive the sector.”

According to the statement, the retreat comes a few days after Ghana’s disappointing first round exit from the ongoing 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

The Black Stars failed to make it past the first round after they picked up a point from their three group games played against the US, Germany and Portugal.

Politics / White House Makes Photo Agency Delete Pics Of Malia Obama. by Naijavibz: 2:07pm On Jul 11, 2014
Monday night Malia and a few of her friends were spotted at Gjelina, famous restaurant in Venice, California. It’s often frequented by celebrities so the paparazzi were on site, snapping pictures of the 16 year old. A photographer captured a picture of Malia as she walked out of the restaurant and he sold the image to AKM-GSI for them to distribute to other sites. The agency posted the picture on their website for other media outlets to purchase. But within a few hours the First Lady’s office called AKM-GSI and asked them to please remove the photo.

According to TMZ, Mrs. Obama’s staff told the agency that they’d secured promises from several media outlets not to photograph either Sasha or Malia when they weren’t with their father, President Obama.

AKM-GSI agreed and then sent an e-mail to other media outlets issuing a “URGENT SET KILL NOTICE.”

It read: “Please delete the set of Malia Obama from your archive. The set was sent around earlier today. We cannot distribute this set.”

When TMZ posted the story, they asked if this was a case of Mrs. Obama and the White House abusing their power when Malia made a decision to one intern in L.A. and then go to a very popular restaurant. There’s a poll and a majority of the people believe it’s an abuse. But if you ask me, this is just what parents do. Parents are supposed to do everything in their power to protect their children. And as it stands now, the more power you have the better you’re able to protect your children. That’s the way of the world. Plus, if the Obamas were really to abuse their power, I can imagine a few things far worse than asking a photo agency to delete a photo of their teenage daughter.

What do you think, were the Obamas wrong to flex this much muscle or is this just yet another example of people being mad at everything the first family does, whether it’s right or wrong?
