Lagos State Police Command is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the kidnap and murder of a 20-year-old undergraduate, identified as John Chinedu Okere, who until his death was a 300 level Electrical Engineering student at Covenant University, Otta in Ogun State.

According to reports, Chinedu left his parent’s house in the morning of Wednesday, August 6, 2014, to a Hospital in Yaba, Lagos for medical reasons and never returned. He reportedly left home with about N6000 and that was the last time he was seen alive.

The mysterious disappearance of Chinedu, caused a stir as the parents ran helter-skelter, in search of him to no avail. They gathered from some family members that one of his friends called on phone earlier that morning to tell him to meet him at an undisclosed hotel.

KIDNAP

Crime Guard learnt that at about mid-day,the victim’s father, Jude Okere, received an SMS notifying him that Chinedu had been kidnapped. Later, he received a phone call from a hidden number demanding N10 million ransom for the release of his son. The caller allegedly threatened to kill the victim if the parents refused to comply as the line went dead.

FATHER’S TESTIMONY

Chinedu’s father said: “ At about mid-day, I received an SMS that John had been kidnapped. Later, I received a phone call from a hidden number. The caller said they had my son, Chinedu and demanded N10 million as ransom threatening to kill him if we refuse to comply. Immediately, I inquired who the caller was, the line went dead. My wife and I quickly reported the case to the Divisional Police Station at Sabo, Yaba.”

After the case was reported to the Police at Sabo, Yaba, it was later transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja the next day where investigations commenced.

DEAD BODY IN A HOTEL ROOM

It was learnt that initially when the whole issue started, the family of the victim felt it was a kidnap that would just be resolved but unfortunately, as events continued to unfold, it turned out to be a premeditated murder. Shockingly, the decomposing corpse of Chinedu was discovered in one of the rooms at ‘DE Homes Hotel’ located in Ejigbo by one of their staff, two days later.
According to reports, the Manager of the hotel went to Ejigbo Divisional Police Station on Friday, 8, 2014, to report the case of murder and investigation began.

HOW SUSPECTS CHECKED INTO HOTEL


A reliable source in the hotel intimated that early on Wednesday morning, the prime suspect, Okorocha Michael along with another young man simply identified as Okey,checked into the hotel with the name Christian. “He booked the room for three days with the name Christian. He claimed he is a youth corps member who wanted to write exams and would be there from that Wednesday to Friday. He also said he was expecting his cousin to join him in the hotel.

‘After booking, Michael left his friend Okey in the hotel and returned an hour before the victim, Chinedu arrived the hotel, which was at about 3pm that day. As soon as Chinedu arrived the hotel, Michael took him to the room. We don’t know what happened inside the room. However, it was later gathered that during their stay in the room, the suspect reportedly confronted the victim on some personal issues. The confrontation eventually led to a heated argument, which later led to the suspect strangulating the victim to death. On Friday, a hotel staff discovered the lifeless body of the young man and alerted the police.”

ABANDONED IN A POOL OF BLOOD

According to reports, Chinedu was murdered and left in the pool of his blood by unfriendly friends, who brutally killed and abandoned his corpse, went ahead and demanded for ransom from his parents.

ARREST OF SUSEPCTS

Crime Guard learnt the 24-year-old suspect, Okorocha Michael, who was arrested on Sunday, in a friend’s house around Ajah area in Lagos, is a graduate of Lagos City Polytechnic, Ikeja. He has been unemployed since he completed his youth service in February this year.

APPEAL FOR JUSTICE

A family member who spoke on the condition of anonymity revealed that the Okere’s were willing to pay the ransom, and were still trying to get it when his corpse was discovered. ‘We sincerely pray that law takes it full course, his killers brought to book and Chinedu will get the justice he deserves even in death,’ the source stated.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, on Friday announced Peter Ozo-Eson as the new General Secretary.

Until his appointment, He was the Chief Economist and Head of Research Department of the Congress.

Mr. Ozo-Eson’s appointment as substantive General Secretary of the Congress was announced in a communiqué at the end of NLC’s National Executive Council, NEC, meeting in Enugu.

Since the internal crisis that rocked the Congress came to climax with the removal of the then General Secretary, John Odah, on May 24, 2011, the NLC Secretariat was left in hands of officials in acting capacity.

Following Mr. Odah’s formal retirement later on April 30, 2013; Owei Lakemfa, a senior assistant secretary, was appointed to serve briefly as acting General Secretary of the Congress.

When Mr. Lakemfa later moved over to the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity, OATUU, as Secretary-General, Chris Uyot took over.

A dissolvable tampon could soon offer women faster protection against HIV, scientists say.

Those deemed to be at high risk of contracting HIV in the U.S. are currently prescribed daily drugs, taken orally, to protect against the virus.

But a range of new topical protection methods, including gels and films which can be inserted into the vagina before sex, are currently in development.

A team of researchers at the University of Washington noted the new products were not performing well in clinical trials because they are difficult to use.
And so they have created dissolving fibres, which could be spun and inserted into an applicator, similar to those used to insert tampons.

Bio-engineers believe the tampon could deliver a topical drug, known to protect women from contracting the virus, faster.

Their method spins the drug into silk-like fibres, which quickly dissolve when they come into contact with moisture.

It means higher doses of the drug could be administered than is possible when using gels or creams.
Lead study author Cameron Ball, said: 'This could offer women a potentially more effective, discreet way to protect themselves from HIV infection by inserting the drug-loaded materials into the vagina before sex.'

The findings build on previous research by the team, which found electrically spun cloth could be dissolved to release drugs.

The latest study shows the fibre materials can hold 10 times the concentration of medicine as anti-HIV gels currently in development.

Oral pills are available in the U.S. for people who are considered at risk for HIV infection.

Meanwhile a host of topical medications in the form of gels and films are starting to be developed.

They are placed inside the vagina before sexual intercourse, allowing the drug to dissolve and diffuse into the surrounding issue.
Called microbicides, the drugs must be given as a large dose to be effective minutes before sex.

But to date the topical drugs have not performed well in clinical trials, partly because they were not easy to use.

Drugs in film form take at least 15 minutes to fully dissolve in the body, while the volume of gels must be large enough to deliver a full dose but small enough to prevent leaking.

'The effectiveness of an anti-HIV topical drug depends partially on high-enough dosages and quick release,' Ball said.

'We have achieved higher drug loading in our material such that you wouldn’t need to insert a large amount of these fibres to deliver enough of the drug to be helpful.'

The research team says the soft, dissolving fibres could be rolled into a cardboard tampon applicator for insertion or built into the shape of a vaginal ring, similar to those used for contraception.

The material can accommodate different anti-HIV drugs and the team is testing several others for effectiveness.

Assistant professor Kim Woodrow, who led the research, said: 'We think the fibre platform technology has the capability of being developed into multifunctional medical fabrics that address simultaneously challenges related to biological efficacy and user preferences.'

Fears have been raised that the schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram militants earlier this year are being used as suicide bombers.

The speculation has arisen after a number of female suicide bombings in Nigeria's biggest city of Kano, while a ten-year-old girl wearing explosives was also discovered in Katsina state.

The latest attack came on Wednesday when a female suicide bomber blew herself up at a college in Kano, killing six people. According to Information Nigeria, the bomber was a female teenager.
It was the fourth suicide bombing carried out by a female in the city in the past week.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, although militant group Boko Haram, which is fighting for an Islamic state in religiously-mixed Nigeria, has repeatedly bombed Kano as it radiates attacks outwards from its northeast heartlands.

Government spokesman Mike Omeria said security forces arrested three Boko Haram suspects in Katsina state, two of them female, on Tuesday.

One was a 10-year-old girl who had an explosive belt strapped to her by the others, he said.

Using female suicide bombers in the city appears to be a new tactic of Boko Haram, although they have used them on occasion for years in the northeast.

Two female suicide bombers blew themselves up at a trade show and a petrol station in Kano on Monday, killing one other person and injuring at least six others.

On Sunday, a female suicide bomber killed herself but no one else while trying to target police officers.

Concerns have now been raised the militant group is using the schoolgirls kidnapped earlier this year in Chibok in the suicide bombings.

Members of the #BringBackOurGirls group have now reportedly said they fear the girls are being used in the attack.

Former education minister Oby Ezekwesili has warned the kidnapped girls may be 'indoctrinated or coerced into being used as suicide bombers', according to the International Business Times.

Meanwhile, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria has urged the government to investigate the identity of the suicide bombers, according to the Daily Trust.

In a statement, HURIWA co-ordinator Emmanuel Onwubiko and media director Zainab Yusuf said: 'In the event that these female suicide bombers are identified to have being the same kidnapped girls then the government should immediately deploy all resources and strategies to bring to an end once and for all this shameful scenario since the military have repeatedly stated that they are aware of the whereabouts of the kidnapped Chibok girls.'

In a separate incident on Tuesday, two suicide bombers killed 13 people in attacks on two mosques in the town of Potiskum, in Yobe state in the northeast, medical official Bala Afuwa, who received the bodies at a local hospital, told Reuters by telephone on Wednesday.

Two of my uncles were killed,' said resident Mohammed Abubakar, whose family home is next to one of the mosques that were attacked. 'They had just returned from the mosque.'

President Goodluck Jonathan, who has come under heavy criticism for failing to end the five-year-old rebellion, pledged $500 million on Wednesday towards Nigerians living in states that are worst affected by Boko Haram violence.

Earlier this month kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls who managed to escape from their Islamic extremist captors were reunited with the president.

He heard tales from some of the 57 who escaped after their abduction on April 15 before assuring them of his determination that those still in captivity ‘are brought out alive’.

Around 57 students managed to flee shortly after they were captured, but a committee investigating their disappearance said 219 of the girls are still missing.

According to a mediator working with Boko Haram two of the girls have died of snake bites while around 20 have fallen ill.

Boko Haram is demanding a swap for detained fighters in exchange for the girls.

Most of the schoolgirls are still believed to be held in the Sambisa Forest — a wildlife reserve that includes a mixture of thick jungle and open savannah.

The forest borders on sand dunes marking the edge of the Sahara Desert.

Sightings of the girls and their captors have been reported in neighboring Cameroon and Chad.

Chibok and nearby villages are targets because they are enclaves of staunch Christians in predominantly Muslim north Nigeria.

NFF to Employ Police Forensic Experts To Confirm Kawu’s Signature on Maigari Impeachment Notice.
Following the denial of a Northern football official in signing the Impeachment notice of Aminu Maigari, the NFF has said that it might seek the services of Forensic experts to determine the authenticity of the matter.

Chairman of the NNL, Ahmed Kawu denied to have signed the notice, claiming that it was forged, a position which an NFF board member Effiong Johnson termed as “childish and regrettable,” adding that “Kawu is not man enough to face Maigari and tell him that he willingly supported his impeachment.”

According to Vanguard, Johnson said: “Kawu should just shut-up because nobody forced him to sign and nobody has ever forged his signature, he is just being childish by accusing people and claiming that he was forced to sign.

“Very soon the board will invite the police for a forensic test on the signatures of all the members that signed, so he should shut up. If he believes that Maigari, the former president of the NFF was his godfather or if he was a member of the cabal, he wouldn’t have signed the document but we did what we did in the interest of Nigerian football.”

After the signing of the communique, the names of the signees was made public, which could have led to the present stand of the Kawu, a Kano State born football administrator.

Last year, Yasmine, eldest daughter of the former minister, passed away suddenly in her London apartment after a reported neurological attack.
Also, in October 2013, El-Rufai’s immediate brother, Ibrahim and his nephew Lawal Sani-Gwandu were also killed in a car crash.

Popular Lagos pastor and Convener of the Save Nigeria Group, Pastor Tunde Bakare says one of the ways to end the spate of attacks by terror group, Boko Haram in Nigeria, is for the Federal Govt of Nigeria to apologize to the sect members for killing their leader, Mohammed Yusuf in 2009.

Former Minister of Education and #bringbackourgirls convener Obi Ezekwesili, was this morning detained by SSS agents at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, as she tried to leave the country for London.

Mrs Ezekwesili immediately took to twitter to announce her detention. She said she was heading to London to appear on the BBC Hardtalk programme but was prevented from boarding her flight by security operatives who confiscated passport. She was later released and allowed to board her 8a.m British Airways flight. See her tweets below...

Policemen in Lagos, yesterday, foiled attempt by a mob to lynch a middle-aged woman who was in possession of a dead child at Mile-Two, along Oshodi/Apapa expressway.

Though the woman, who gave her name as Florence, claimed that the dead child was hers, the mob said she could have kidnapped and killed the child for money ritual.

When newsmen arrived the the scene yesterday, the dead child was seen lying by the side of the expressway, with Florence by his side. Two Ghana must go bags were found by her side.

Inside the bags were beverages, detergents and assorted clothes.

Though news making the round earlier had it that the child’s eyes were plucked, but Vanguard discovered that the eyeballs were only popped.

Information gathered revealed that the woman had been sighted in the area with the child strapped at her back for three days.
