That wasn't an attack on Somalis. I was just explaining to genieluv what the British did to Africans and I used that example. I'm not very cognizant with Somali clans so when referring to Somalis I just use Somali. Anyway, do these Isahakia Somalis see themselves as Somali as other Somalis or they have some complex?

Why are Somalis squeezed between being Arab and Black? What happened to being just African and Somali? Also one has to be ridiculously ignorant to think that Arab = ethnicity. It's a cultural term that unifies people from as far as Morocco to Iraq to Sudan. The only thing these people have in common is the language and certain cultural practices, but not a common ancestry. As a Somali, the only thing I've got in common with them is my religion. As for the Black label, I've already explained myself. I don't see why anyone should throw a tantrum and to say that I don't want to be associated with negativity? LOL, being Somali in the west is probably a lot worse than calling yourself black. I'm not only seen as black, but also Muslim and from a community of mainly refugees. How is that not more negative? I'd like to see Omanbala1 and Nairobiwalker answer this.

You have to look at Swahili people like Dominicans, a group of people who are a mixture of Africans, Natives & Europeans. Some Dominicans identify with their African roots whilst others identify more with their European or native roots but at the end of the day they're all Dominicans.
So, let's take Mombasa for example, you have the Twelve Tribes (Native Swahilis), Swahilized Africans & Swahilized Arabs. Naturally the Arab Swahili will identify more with Arabia then a Swahili Pokomo-Kenyan but they're both Swahili connected by their mother tongue language, culture and beliefs.

That was the simple lazy breakdown but the Swahili coast is a little more intricate than that.

I'm a Swahili from Tanzania and what I have noticed is the Kenyan Swahilis have a more well defined Swahili identity than the Tanzanian ones, I think they might be more Arabized as well but I'm rambling

I already told her that but she's more fixated on proving Swahilis are Arabs. Nice explanation though. Hope she'll get that.

Actually Swahili people is a very unclear term that generally refers to a group of coastal people who have Swahili as a first language and yes, they do identify as Bantus.

That aside, languages are not classified based on what the speakers identify as but based on the structure. Just a random question though, why are you guys trying so hard to prove Swahili is not Bantu? Lol, it just sounds weird.

Pidgin will still be a Germanic language unless it evolves into something just super-different from what it is now. Just like Creole.

If pidgin evolves into a new language, it would be a Germanic language with a Germanic structure just like English. Meanwhile Swahili is a Bantu language with a Bantu structure. I hope you got me.

That's why they're called Latino languages and it took a lot of time including the death of the Latin language for them to be recognized as separate languages. Pidgin is not yet there. Pidgin is more like Sheng in Kenya.

Swahili is the youngest language on the African continent yet the most widely spoken African language. It's not about age dear. Even English is the youngest language in Europe.

Brother, I don't think Ethiopians will agree to use Swahili as the official or de facto language, when eastern Africans become one country. Amharegn/Amharic is too special to us. Even if Ethiopia is home to 80 diverse and unique ethnic groups, Ethiopia indirectly mostly is Amhara culture.

It doesn't have to be your de facto language but many of you will speak it. Many Southern Ethiopians are already speaking it.

That's cool, l don't know about Kenya, but we Nigerians are just too stubborn, hence it would be difficult for a Government to introduce a common language like they easily did in Kenya, not impossible but difficult and would require a wise and trusted leader.
Take the North and parts of the middle belt, they are so diverse but Hausa is now commonly spoken, but it would be difficult for Hausa to penetrate other areas same way, even if they migrate here in numbers. So the leader may achieve this in the North and middle belt for example but may find it difficult in the south east and vice versa.

Kiswahili is a Bantu language that was initially known as Kingozi. It has many borrowed words from Arabic including the word Swahili itself that stems from Sawahel, an Arabic word that was used to refer to the people of the East African coast.

Most Kenyans (Christians) have one Western name and two African ones. We don't go around telling other Africans to stop being Western though because we know we too have westernized to some degree.
