Bifwoli: Funny how you want parts of Lagos compared to Europe but yet when other Africans in other countries dress more western then they're labelled "slaves to western culture and dressing".That they "lack originality and pride in their own stuff."
If you guys are gonna school other Africans about pride in african inspired Aso oke and Agbada clothing then might as well make Lagos look and compare to Lagos or Jos or even Abeokuta .Stop comparing it to Europe or London. It's called double standards. When they don't want to accept the progress of other countries, they say either the white man did it or they (the other country) are copying Europeans yet they're the first to pride themselves for being like Europeans in aspects that they do well in. |

Alright, so maybe not the UoN.
Those Unis have money from govt, privately sponsored students and absolutely nothing to show. Men tend to be extreme with corruption compared to women. MKU VC is a man. You're just being sexist. In fact all these prosperous countries and institutions were transformed men. Name any prosperous country and you'll realize the person behind the transformation is a man. One woman does something exemplary and you're all over boasting how women are better leaders - if a man did the same you'll be accusing him of misogyny. |

MtuMsuper: NairobiWalker said it in plain English with a list of common basic commodities that have witnessed price hikes since the last few years. He hasn't included fuel prices, rent amounts, transportation costs and school and medical fees, all of which have risen. You see, you should understand how and when big macro infrastructure projects affect and effect micro economic change, and the former is not always neccesarily true of the latter. Policies that create jobs and put people at work for long, and food on people's plates, constantly, are what count. FYI, there has been a steady rise of youth unemployment and under employment, in spite of paper GDP growth.
My origins are in western kenya and i can assure you that sugar politics is a very sharp sword in those areas. That Kidero "ruined " Mumias sugar is a cheap lousy lie used by his detractors for political mileage. This isn't the place or time to discuss a man's career, but rest assured it was his successor who steered the ship aground. That being said, there is no sober debate on sugar issues in Kenya, and those voices who speak reason, never get heard. The feeling on the ground is that successive regimes have never helped the locals achieve prosperity by growing cane, by not using the levers of govt to do so. For example, govt turns a blind eye to the embezzlement of cess funds to fix roads in sugar zones, an unthinkable act in a tea growing zone. Also, govt doesn't show the same zeal in developing cane varieties via agric research institutions, that grows quicker and juicier than they do for crop varieties not grown in sugar zones. Most cane varieties in Kenya mature at 30+ months, FYI. In 2017, that's criminal! Well said. |

I remember Rails talking about a bridge from Mombasa road to Westlands before the Superhighway and sikuwa nashikanisha. One thing I know those people can bring is novelty in planning. Of course their focus is taking power. What else? They don't have the treasury in their control. I always ask the same question. What else should they focus on? They have to be in power to deliver what they promise. |

Bifwoli: Too much selective "facts" and misrepresentations here .
First off ,Lapsett was never about oil discovery it was mooted as part of Vision 2030 way back in 2008 - thats 4yrs before oil was 1st discovered in 2012,and in any case the total cost of Lapsett is way way above the small value of oil discovered .
You mention collapse of sugar industry but fail to say some of its woes are tied to Kidero - the NASA man widely held responsible for Mumias woes .And some of the chief accusers of looting and corruption were asked to go give concrete evidence to EACC they refused -cuz it was all for political mileage but with no supporting evidence.
You just mention one industry relocating but fail to highlight the many that've set base in Kenya.Daimler came in 2016,VW set up not too long ago,Hela clothing came in March 2017,many respected global hotel chains have opened shop,Volvo Trucks is opening an assembly plant in Mombasa and many other smaller firms have same plans.AVIC also set up their HQs here not bcuz of oil mind you.
You mention GDP not doubling and prices going up but you fail to say other factors like exchange rate went from 85 per $ to average 102 per $.In any case no country can lift its millions out of poverty in just 5yrs - even China with its massive growth of 10% for nearly 20yrs hasn'tbeen able to lift every Chinaman from poverty hence you see them trooping to settle in Africa.Real GDP growth has to go for long time in a sustained manner for you to see the dividends (has Ethiopia which is grows even faster managed to eliminated poverty?)
Lastly the debt rise has its visible effect - the roads ,power plants ,the massive rise in electrification rate ,the better hospital facilities (two specialised centeres in every county) the port dredging and capacity enhancement .the SGR ....all these are visible effects of debt rise and they'll have a knock on effect on GDP.
Now tell us with a straight face that living standards haven't improved and all these other factors don't have a net effect on the overall sitution? Lets not argue with emotions but let facts come naked with no skewed and selective way of looking at the big picture. 1. Kidero is Kidero and NASA is NASA. Kidero is not NASA and Mumias didn't collapse when Kidero was at helm. It is obvious the government sabotaged Mumias considering Miraa farmers were given 1 billion shillings twice to 'boost' their industry that isn't half as important as the sugar industry yet wasn't even in turmoil at that time while when the sugar industry was at its knees, he instead ordered what he called 'cheaper imports' that all Jubilee supporters clapped upon. A move that enables the Duales and other cartels to import sugar and make billions. Interestingly - the said 'cheaper imports' saw the prices of sugar increase by over 140% in a year. 2. LAPSSET funding was influenced by the discovery of oil. Remember no one wants to invest in something that brings no returns. 3. The car manufacturers you speak of haven't set shop yet. Let's wait till they do before we talk of them. 4. I never expected Kenya to raise ALL its poor from poverty. I just explained that what Jubilee did is nothing close to impressive. 5. Arguing without emotions, I can frankly tell you Kenya's living standards haven't increased much in the past 4 years. |

Nowenuse: There are hundreds of ethnic groups in Nigeria and traditional dancing are for different occasions. There is traditional dancing for social gatherings, for traditional festivals, for theatre performances and what have you. Now, whichever it is, does that changes it from being Nigerian traditional dancing? No, stupid, it's the same culture practiced by same people. I wonder what you mean by "social gathering". What I gave you is the normal traditional dance that everyday Nigerians do when called upon to |

Sameer moved? That's bad. Are our Indian investors feeling threatened or sth? Not just sameer. Several manufacturers closed shop. Muafrika2: I think he's referring to these... 1. The GDP should have been triple 2. Oil discoery has raised the GDP - 3. Inflation has reversed gains made by a higher GDP
The floor is yours, 1. The GDP should have been triple - of course it should. Rampant looting and negligence that saw several local industries close shop or brought to their knees (sugar industry for instance) while others moved to other countries (e.g Sameer to India) while we saw former petty politicians like Duale who barely owned anything other than their MP salary become billionaires plus a host of other scandals prevented this. 2. Oil discovery came with lots of speculation and more investments came in creating a multiplier effect that played it's part on the GDP. Go to Turkana county and see what's happening their. Remember the Chinese who considered Tanzania their biggest E African ally moved to Kenya after the oil discoveries. Avic is setting up a mega headquarter in Westlands now. Lappset - the largest project in Africa currently is happening because of the oil discovery. 3. See - Kenya's GDP was $55 billion in 2013 after rebasing. Contrary to Kikuyu1's assertions, it never doubled unless you consider the 2013 figure before rebasing. The population of Kenya is said to have increased by around 5M over the same period. This translates to a GDP per capita rise of just about 20%. (from around $1370 to $1666). Meanwhile see the prices of some basic commodities over the same period. 1. Bread - KES 40 - KES 50 (20% increase) 2. Kilo of beef - KES 240 - KES 450 (87% increase) 3. Maize flour 2KG - KES 90 - KES 160 (78% increase) 4. 500ml milk - KES 30 - KES 60 (100% increase) 5. Electricity token - KES 12 - KES 18 (50% increase) 6. Sugar 1kg - KES 100 - KES 240 (140% increase) Those are just a few examples of the most important products in the country - and before I forget, the national debt rose the fastest during those 5 years. Now tell me with a straight face if the gains in GDP within the last 5 years has really improved the living standards the ordinary Kenyan other than the corrupt tenderprenuer. You don't want us to be like the Nigerians who take pride in GDP figures while the ordinary mwananchi can barely afford basic needs. |

The Abuja centenary city construction worth about $15 billion, Dangote's refinery construction about $17 billion, Eko atlantic city about $6 billion, Ajaokuta steel industry reconstruction about $6 billion and many more to mention.
Dancing with culture is fun when done in a civilized and appropriate way like this in Nigeria and not your barbaric Zulu style of displaying nudity like animals and disgracing black african culture! kikuyu1: For real if the unthinkable happens then we'll deserve all the terrible consequences! Like I said I don't agree with all UK's moves but he's put us on the path to permanent prosperity. If we lose the momentum due to unwise political choices that chance may never happen again. Do you know between 2013 and now our GDP has almost doubled ? GDP means nothing if the situation on ground remains constant. Jubilee took power when Kenya was set for a leap - discovery of oil and it's speculation, one of the best constitutions on the continent and devolution, a plethora of mega projects set to begin etc. The GDP was bound to double. It could triple were it not for the looting of the Jubilee government and that would have brought the REAL change. As it stands, the doubling hasn't changed living standards much considering the price of almost everything basic has also doubled within the same period. Anyway, I'm sorry but you sound radical. I am NASA but I hold no extreme views towards Jubilee and I'll still love my country and be patriotic if Jubilee wins. Holding views like you'll do this and that if the party you don't support wins (which you find impossible) is one of the reasons we erupted into turmoil in 2007. Change your mentality brother. |
