President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will leave Abuja on Tuesday for Lagos to celebrate, along with other leaders, the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
 
The ECOWAS golden jubilee was flagged off in Accra last month.
 
The Lagos events will include reenacting the 1975 declaration at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs in Victoria Island.
 
At the Eko Hotels and Suites event, President Tinubu, the Chairman of ECOWAS, will highlight the economic bloc's milestones.
 
The Chairman of the NIIA and former Minister of External Affairs, Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, will review the bloc's 50-year journey, which panellists at the NIIA will later analyse.
 
The only surviving Head of State who signed the ECOWAS declaration, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (Rtd), will participate in all the ceremonies and deliver a speech at the Eko Hotels.
 
Dr Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, will deliver the welcome address.
 
While in Lagos, President Tinubu will, on Saturday, May 31, commission some projects of the administration.
 
Among them are Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Lekki Deep Sea Port Tax Credit Concrete Road, the flag-off of Section II of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, and the 7th Axial Road.
 
The President will virtually commission Kano-Kanwar-Danja-Hadejiya Section II Road and Yakasai-Zalli Road and flag off the Kano Northern By-pass, Zaria-Hunkuyi-Dabai Section I, Dabai-Kafur Malumfashi, and Malumfashi-Dayi-Yashe-Gidan Mutum Daya Section III.
 
President Tinubu will observe the Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the State House, Dodan Barracks, before returning to Abuja.

BREAKING: Chaos erupts as Jigawa delegates disrupt Atiku, Obi coalition meeting

A high-level coalition meeting involving former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and others descended into chaos as delegates from Jigawa State disrupted the proceedings.

The ongoing coalition meeting at the Abuja Continental Hotel, organised by the National Political Consultative Group (North), was briefly disrupted following a disagreement over representation for Jigawa State.

Tensions rose when former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, announced a delegate to speak for the state.

In protest, several Jigawa delegates stormed the stage, blocking the individual from speaking and insisting they would not be represented by those named.


As the confrontation escalated, security personnel, including members of the Nigerian Police, DSS, and private guards, quickly formed a protective barrier around key figures such as Atiku, Amaechi and others.

Calm was restored after several minutes of appeals, as Mustapha Lamido, son of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, along with another delegate, was chosen to speak on behalf of the state.

Former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023, Peter Obi, former governor of Rivers State Rotimi Amaechi and former vice presidential candidate of the Yusuf LP Datti Baba-Ahmed are currently meeting in Abuja.

A meeting of a high-profile coalition, which included former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party's Peter Obi, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi among others, was thrown into chaos when delegates from Jigawa State interrupted the discussions.

Tensions escalated when Babachir Lawal, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, designated a delegate to represent the state.

In a show of protest, multiple delegates from Jigawa took to the stage, preventing the person from speaking and asserting that they refused to be represented by the individuals mentioned.

As the confrontation intensified, security staff, comprising the Nigerian Police, DSS, and private guards, swiftly assembled a defensive line around prominent individuals like Atiku and Amaechi, among others.

After a few minutes of urging for calm, peace was reestablished. Mustapha Lamido, the son of Sule Lamido, the former Governor of Jigawa State, was selected alongside another delegate to represent the state's interests.

Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti says his administration has procured 20 electric buses which will be rolled out in the next 2 months.

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has announced the procurement of 20 electric buses which will be rolled out in the next two months.

The governor also revealed that $29m (the equivalent of N9.8bn at the time) was spent by the immediate-past administration in the reconstruction of Port Harcourt road, which was not realised, adding that his government successfully built the road with $22m (the equivalent of N36.5bn at current exchange rate).

Otti disclosed this while addressing the Aba community, who organised a thanksgiving carnival on the Umuagbai Secondary School premises, Port Harcourt Road, in celebration of the reconstruction and completion of Port Harcourt Road, abandoned for over three decades.

He said bus terminals were being built for the transport system in the state while the 20 electric buses for the transportation would be for the first batch.

“In the next two months, not more than two months, our transport system will start working. So, if you go around, you will see the bus terminals we are building.

“We have paid for the 20 electric buses. So, they are bringing the buses to carry you and me, and the buses will be beautiful.

“You know the kind of buses you see abroad. That is the kind of bus you will see in Abia. The only difference is that these buses will not use petrol. It will not use diesel. It will not use gasoline. They will be electric buses,” Otti stated.

The governor, who recalled his efforts in fixing the Port Harcourt Road against the attacks of the noisy opposition, said he replied the shameless opposition with performances.

He also revealed that the amount of money spent by the immediate-past administration in the reconstruction of Port Harcourt road, which was not realised, was much more than what his government spent in realising the road.

“In 2017, they awarded this Port Harcourt Road. The amount at that time was N9.8bn and they paid out the entire money. But the road was not done.

“So, when in 2025, the road cost N36.5bn, they started making noise. So, I said, since you people understand mathematics, the average exchange rate in 2017 was N333 to a Dollar. Now, if you apply that, the N9.8bn was actually $29m (equivalent).

“In 2025, at the average exchange rate of N1,600, N36.5bn is actually $22.8m equivalent. So, let us do the mathematics.

“$29m and $22m, which is higher? The real issue is that in 2017, $29m was spent, and no road was done. In 2025, $22m was spent and a standard road is done and delivered for use,” Otti said.

While appreciating the reception organised for him, Otti thanked the Aba people for their sustained support, right from 2015 when he contested the governorship election for the first time.

He gave N1.4m reward to a keke driver in Aba, who returned N2.4m forgotten by a passenger in his tricycle and commended such act of honesty.

Senator Darlington Nwokocha and the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Emmanuel Emeruwa, saluted Otti for his strides in Aba and Abia State in general.

They said that the feat so far achieved by Otti was a testament to a focused leadership in the state.

Speaking on behalf of the Aba business community and the Aba Landlord’s Association, Chief David Onuoha, Chief Leo Okoye, Chief Alphonsus Odigbo and the chairman of the occasion, John Udeagba, said they decided to put the event together to show appreciation to the governor.

The convener of the carnival, Chief Onyeka Udeajah, lauded Otti, adding that the Port Harcourt Road stood tall in the achievements of the governor.

Today, as part of activities marking the second anniversary of our administration, we gathered in thanksgiving at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Aguiyi Ironsi Layout, Umuahia, to return all glory to God for the journey so far.

It was an honour to worship alongside government officials and well-meaning Abians, with the esteemed presence of His Excellency, Mr Peter Obi @PeterObi.

We deeply appreciate Mr Peter Obi's kind words and his call to all Abians to continue to uphold our government in prayers. As he rightly pointed out, governance is a great responsibility, and it requires leaders to remain true trustees of public funds, using them solely for the good of the people.

Reflecting on our achievements, I reaffirmed that none of these milestones would have been possible without God’s grace citing the scriptures in 1 Corinthians 3:6-7:
"I planted the seed, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase."

The journey has been one of resilience and divine inspiration. We recognize that our collective efforts would be in vain without God’s blessing, and so we humbly return all thanks to Him.

I sincerely appreciate all government officials, our hardworking commissioners, legislators, and judicial officers who have played vital roles in the success of our administration. A special thank you to the Church and indeed Abians for their steadfast prayers and support.

As we mark two years of transformation, we renew our commitment to sustaining the momentum. Abia is on the path of prosperity, and together, with faith, hard work, and unity, we will continue to build a future that benefits all.
