Greenville LNG has brought the first LNG fuelled trucks into Nigeria to distribute LNG to our customers in all parts of Nigeria. The Virtual Pipeline System allows LNG to be transported to non-pipeline connected areas, especially the gas starved parts of Nigeria.

Avu mechanic village in Owerri West Council Area of Imo State under the aegis of Nigeria Automobile Technicians Association, NATA has warned one Prince Jeff Ukachukwu to desist from frustrating establishment of CNG auto gas conversion training centre in Imo State by Chief Executive Officer of Cocean Oil &Gas.
The mechanics regretted that instead of Jeff Ukachukwu to use his connection as he claimed to encourage and commend Cocean Oil&Gas for bringing such innovative technology in Imo State by seeking for government collaboration so as to fast-track the project,he is busy lobbing his way to build lock-up shops in the area designated for training of mechanics for free of charge by a private investor.
According to them,”the CNG auto gas conversion training centre will enhance the mechanics as well as moving petroleum vehicles to gas. It is a welcome development. People are going to move petrol to gas. Abia State Government is currently funding Cocean 100% for the establishment of CNG in their State. All we need to do is to give Cocean moral support.
Speaking to newsmen on Monday 12th February,2024, the Chairman of Avu mechanic village,Comrade Ifeanyi Ugwoegbu regretted that prince Ukachukwu has continued to attack Cocean Oil &Gas who is currently building CNG Training Centre that would add value to the mechanics.
Comrade Ugwoegbu popularly called “Bjshop” flayed a media report that Ukachukwu was appointed Avu mechanic village developer by the State Government since 2018 challenging him to set the records straight with documents indicating his appointment as a developer.
He narrated that Ukachukwu came into Avu mechanic village through Imo State Chairman of NATA, Comrade Kyrian Nnadi who by all means wants to build lock-up shops on the land allotted to Dr. Chinedu Ndubuisi of Cocean Oil &Gas.
The Mechanic village Chairman recalled that they have confirmed through the office of Survey-General that State Government allotted parcel of land to Cocean Oil &Gas where it currently building CNG Training Centre.
According to him,”Jeff Ukachukwu recently entered into mechanic village through Kyrian Nnadi on mission of building his own filling station as well as building a hall worth of five million naira only for the mechanics for which he has refused to come for the review as demanded by the Mechanics.
I wonder why somebody is attacking the only private investor that is interested in bringing CNG to Imo State. Other states have gotten their own CNG except Imo State. This CNG Training Centre will benefit our mechanics. Jeff Ukachukwu should stop attacking Cocean on pages of newspapers. Full stop.
We have heard about the Newspaper publications from both Cocean Oil &Gas and Prince Jeff Ukachukwu,and we want peace in Avu mechanic village. I challenge both Jeff Ukachukwu to come to us for clarification”,he concluded.
In a swift reaction,Cocean CEO,Dr. Chinedu Ndubuisi recalled that Kyrian and his agents had severally destroyed his fence which he has instituted legal action against him. “The matter started from New Owerri Police Station to the Scorpion Unit of Imo State Police Command, Owerri. Kyrian did not appear before the court last week. I challenge Jeff Ukachukwu to provide appointment letter as Government appointed developer. I challenge them to call the name of the permanent secretary I connived with to get my land”,he stated.

CNG: 11 Plc Begins Plant Construction In Lagos, Ibadan
Chief executive officer, 11 Plc, Adetunji Oyebanji, has said the company has commenced exploration of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) market with the construction of facilities in Ibadan and Lagos respectively.
Oyebanji, who disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos, said that feat was part of the company’s commitment to intensifying the usage of the product and support for the new administration to further boost the economy.
“We have continued to see improvement in all the investments that have been made in the last few years by upgrading the company to a higher pedestal.
He reiterated that the future of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), could not be emphasised in the growth and development of the global economy, Nigeria inclusive.
The industry, according to him, is ready to collaborate with the Bola Tinubu administration to uplift the country’s economy to an enviable height.
Explaining the essence of the oil and gas industry to the national economy, Oyebanji said his company, as a model, had invested massively on installations of LPG in 40 retail outlets nationwide.
Oyebanji said: “In terms of investment, we have done a lot as far as LPG installations are concerned.
“In several stations now, we are moving too close to 40 stations nationwide in our LPG installations, and we will continue to do this because we believe that LPG is the way forward.
“We have also invested in a new gas station at the toll gate, lbadan, the Oyo State capitaland the station is now operational.
“With its massive investments in LPG storage and distribution infrastructure , 11 Plc. Gas is well-positioned to maintain a dominant presence in the country’s LPG industry for a long time.”
Oyebanji said that the company had expanded its filling plants across the country, noting that it had already expanded storage capacity to 8,000 metric tonnes.
He added that the company had already started exploring the CNG market with the construction of facilities in Ibadan and Lagos.
“We continue to see improvement and all the investment that has been made in the last few years have been to upgrade the company and bring out more value.
“We are one of the six major petroleum products marketers in the country. Currently, we have over 250 retail outlets located in all 36 states of Nigeria.
“We are also respected in the industry for our high ethical standards and adherence to safety, health and environmental standards while playing a leading role in the promotion and sharing of best practices in the downstream sector of Nigeria’s oil and gas industry,” he said.
According to him, the firm has its fuel facility and an ultra-modern lube oil plant in Apapa Lagos, with a capacity of 300,000 barrels per annum and we are proud to be regarded as one of the most sophisticated in Africa.
Oyebanji said that millions of dollars had been invested in the company, resulting in significant improvements in all areas of its operations.
Recall that ExxonMobil sold its 60 per cent stake in former Mobil Oil Nigeria Ltd. to NIPCO Plc, the parent company of 11 Plc, on April 1, 2017.
Since then, 11 Plc has made significant investments in its facilities to increase productivity and meet market demands.
CNG stands for compressed natural gas, which is a natural gas fuel stored at high pressure. It has been compressed to 200-250 bar and thus reduced to less than 1% of its volume at standard atmospheric pressure. This makes it easier to store and to transport.
CNG fuel is particularly suitable for passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, light trucks and buses. It offers trucks a range of around 550 km. CNG vehicles driving on biomethane emit significantly less particulate matter* and CO2** than conventional fossil fuels.
Production of biomethane
The renewable and non-fossil variant of CNG is biomethane or bioCNG. Biomethane is produced by fermenting biomass into biogas, which is purified and converted into grid quality gas. The biomass can consist of various types of raw materials, or feedstock, such as straw or tree bark and branches, or organic materials, such as food waste, roadside grass, sewage sludge and animal manure.
Biomethane to bioCNG
The biomethane, which consists of the same molecule as natural gas, namely CH4 or methane, is then injected into the gas grid. The natural gas is subsequently extracted from the grid and compressed by means of a CNG installation to be used as transport fuel. Biomethane can be blended or used up to 100% depending on availability and customer requirements.

TotalEnergies Nigeria PLC has announced that it is setting up two CNG filling stations in Abuja and Lagos, which will be operational in the first half of 2022.
November 8, 2021. TotalEnergies Nigeria PLC has announced that it is setting up two compressed natural gas (CNG) filling stations in Abuja and Lagos, which will be operational in the first half of 2022.
Managing Director, Dr. Samba Seye, made the announcement while speaking at the 15th Oil Trading and Logistics (OTL) Africa Petroleum Downstream Expo 2021 theme, “Nigerian Downstream Oil and Gas Sector in Transition: Getting Set.” in Lagos.
Seye, who was represented at the conference by Charles Atiomohis, his advisor, said the development was part of TotalEnergies’ commitment to global transition with a target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
According to him, the company’s production and sales mix would experience a significant change by 2030 as operations will constitute 50 percent gas; 35 percent oil and liquid biofuels; and 15 percent electricity, mostly renewable. He added that by 2050, the mix would be 40 percent renewable power, 40 percent gas and 20 percent liquid products.
He further explained that the development was also in support of the autogas scheme of the federal government, which was created to convert vehicle engines in the country from petrol and diesel to CNG.
Seye expressed optimism that more CNG stations would be set up if the government continued to initiate policies to deepen gas utilization and profitability. He also emphasized the need to reduce the cost of conversion kits and other sources of renewable energy in order to encourage more Nigerians to adopt the switch.
Also, Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Malam Mele Kyari said that the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) was an enabler of midstream and downstream gas development. Kyari, explained that the PIA had created certainty around investment in natural gas with a clear fiscal regime for gas development. The Act provided for ten years’ tax holiday for investment in gas pipeline among other fiscal incentives.

Is CNG safe?
• CNG is lighter than air which makes it further safe to use. In case of a leak, it rises up and disperses into the atmosphere. • CNG has a high auto-ignition temperature of 540oC as against petrol’s 360oC which makes it a safer fuel than petrol. • CNG has narrow Flammability range, if CNG’s concentration in the air is less than 5% and more than 15%, the gas will not burn even in the presence of a spark.
Is CNG better than my petrol or diesel engine?

Your car when converted, runs much the same as with conventional fuel, but becomes a dual fuel vehicle. The upside of this is that you can easily switch to using petrol if the need arises. There are over 100 filling stations around the country - most of which are regular LPG plants stations with Autogas dispensers.

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Division
In March 2007, NIPCO Plc made its presentation of its CNG project to the Inter-ministerial team of the Federal Government. In the same month FG accorded it’s approval to commence the proposed project at Benin City. NIPCO Gas was formed as Joint Venture Company between NIPCO and Nigerian Gas Company Limited (NGC) to implement the CNG project.
Currently NGC which is subsidiary of NNPC owns 55% of equity while NIPCO owns the balance 40% equity. NIPCO Gas has established 15 CNG running stations in Benin to provide an alternative for the Gasoline run automobiles. Presently it is in the process of constructing further 15 stations in and around Benin City. More than 5,600 vehicles have been converted to CNG for motorist in and around Benin City. As a result nations economy is strengthened as Gasoline imports are reduced.
Impressed with the impact of CNG in Benin, FG directed NIPCO Gas to expand its operations into other parts of the country. Hence a mega CNG station was commissioned at Ibafon, Ogun state, to convert automobiles to CNG as well as to supply nearby industries. Presently NIPCO Gas owns about 67 CNG cascades to ease CNG supply and distribution to industries in Ibafon axis. The Ibafon CNG station along with a city gas station has a larger compressing facility (12,000 scmt) for loading CNG to the nearby industries.

What is CNG and why should I go in for it? CNG stands for Compressed Natural Gas and is one of the most viable alternatives to “Petrol” i.e PMS.
Reasons for switching over to CNG, as an automotive fuel, are mainly:
Lower operation and maintenance cost: On mile to mile basis, CNG is drastically cheaper than petrol. Due to the absence of any lead or benzene content in CNG, the lead fouling of spark plugs is eliminated. CNG fuel systems are sealed, which prevents any spill or evaporation losses. There is an increase in the life of lubricating oils, as CNG does not contaminate and dilute the crankcase oil. Being a gaseous fuel, CNG mixes easily and evenly in air.
Environment friendly: The use of CNG as a vehicular fuel reduces vehicular exhaust emissions (Carbon Monoxide and Hydrocarbon) significantly. This in turn leads to a clean environment.
Flexibility and ease of use: The basic engine characteristics of a vehicle are retained while converting it to run on CNG. The vehicle therefore is capable of running either on Petrol or CNG at the flick of a switch on its dashboard.
What is the Fueling Process
The only major difference between a petrol vehicle and a CNG Vehicle is the fuel system. Natural gas is compressed to between 3,000 and 3,600 pounds per square inch (200 bar) and is stored on board the vehicle in cylinders installed in the rear, undercarriage, or on the roof. When natural gas is required by the engine, it leaves the cylinders, passes through a master manual shut-off valve and travels through a high-pressure fuel regulator located in the engine compartment.
The natural gas is injected at atmospheric pressure through a specially designed natural gas mixer where it is properly mixed with air. Natural gas then flows into the engine’s combustion chamber and is ignited to create the power required to drive the vehicle. Special solenoid-operated valves prevent the gas from entering the engine when it is shut off.
What about the vehicle’s power?
Petrol vehicles converted to natural gas are subject to a small power loss (about 10% to 15%) when running on natural gas; however, vehicles designed specifically to run on natural gas will have no loss of power and may even have greater power and efficiency. Natural gas has a 120 to 130 octane rating, compared with 87 to 96 octane rating of petrol.

A visit to Autogig International Resources Ltd. in Gbagada, one of six centers selected by the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi) for free CNG conversion, offered a chance to explore the growing interest in compressed natural gas (CNG).
With Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) prices soaring to over N1,000 per liter in some parts of Lagos, many vehicle owners are looking for ways to cut fuel expenses, and CNG is seen as a viable alternative.
But what does the conversion involve? Nairametrics provides a detailed account of the process based on insights from Obalanlege Oluwafemi Joseph, the CNG Coordinator at Autogig International Resources Ltd., and Shamil Chandra, Head of Operations at MBH Power Limited in Ikorodu.
CNG Conversion Process: A Closer Look
Joseph explained that the conversion process begins with an inspection to determine the vehicle’s eligibility. “Any vehicle with an internal combustion engine, which operates on the fire triangle—spark, fuel, and air—common to most two-stroke and four-stroke engines, is eligible,” he noted.
Once the vehicle is cleared, conversion takes one to three days. “The steps include mapping the vehicle for the best positioning of the CNG kit, installing it, and programming the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) to ensure smooth operation,” Joseph added.
The process ends with a test drive to confirm the system works.
He clarified that converting to CNG does not remove the petrol or diesel engine. “The vehicle becomes a hybrid, capable of switching between petrol/diesel and CNG,” Joseph explained, highlighting the flexibility this offers.
How a CNG-powered vehicle operates
Once converted, a vehicle can switch between CNG and petrol or diesel. Joseph explained that the switch occurs after the engine starts, with two key modalities in the ECU.
“In the time-based modality, the switch happens within 60 seconds of starting the vehicle,” Joseph said. However, the timing can be adjusted based on the owner’s preference.
The temperature-based modality switches when the engine reaches between 20°C and 40°C, typically within a minute of starting.
Joseph noted that Autogig mainly uses the temperature-based system, while MBH Power Limited prefers the time-based method, which takes 15 to 30 seconds.
Both centers confirmed that CNG-converted vehicles automatically switch back to petrol or diesel when CNG is exhausted, ensuring the driver isn’t stranded.
The cost of converting vehicles to CNG
In Lagos, commercial vehicles can access free CNG conversions at the six approved centers under the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi).
This initiative aims to lower fuel expenses for commercial vehicle owners. Eligible vehicles must be registered with the Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), or be state-owned taxis and vehicles with commercial plate numbers.
For private vehicles, conversion costs vary. At MBH Power Limited, a four-plug vehicle conversion costs N1.3 million, while a six-plug conversion costs N1.5 million. Chandra noted that converting multiple vehicles at once qualifies for a N50,000 discount per vehicle.
At Autogig, pricing depends on several factors, such as the vehicle type, engine cubic capacity, and the size of the CNG cylinder, which ranges from 35L to 200L.
“On average, the cost ranges from N1 million to N1.7 million, depending on these factors,” Joseph explained.
Dispelling safety concerns: Is CNG safe?
Safety concerns are common among vehicle owners considering CNG conversion. However, both Chandra and Joseph emphasized that CNG conversions are safe when done correctly.
“CNG cylinders are made of reinforced materials designed to withstand extreme conditions, far more robust than traditional fuel tanks,” Chandra explained.
He added that CNG is lighter than air, so in the event of a leak, the gas disperses quickly, unlike petrol, which pools on the ground.
Joseph echoed these sentiments, stating, “CNG is much safer than PMS. Because CNG weighs less than air, it’s practically impossible for it to cause an explosion.”
He clarified that the safety features of CNG systems, including pressure release valves and automatic shut-off sensors, ensure safety in case of leaks or irregularities.
The only potential concern, according to Joseph, is pressure explosion, as CNG is compressed to 2900psi (200 bar). However, this risk is minimized by release valves that discharge excess pressure, particularly during refueling.
“CNG kits come with a gauge that allows vehicle owners to monitor pressure levels at all times,” he added.
Both experts stressed that regular maintenance is key to ensuring continued safety and optimal performance.
The cost of CNG gas: A more affordable alternative?
One of the key reasons for switching to CNG is its lower cost compared to petrol or diesel. With PMS prices soaring, CNG offers a more affordable option. At MBH Power Limited, CNG is sold for N480 per Standard Cubic Meter (SCM).
“We sell at this price because we buy from Falcon Gas at N450 per SCM,” Chandra explained.
Joseph added that CNG costs between N230 and N260 per SCM at other stations in Lagos. He also noted that CNG has a higher-octane rating than petrol, leading to improved performance, fewer carbon deposits on the engine, and better emissions.
Chandra agreed, adding that the cleaner combustion of CNG reduces engine wear, leading to lower maintenance costs over time.
While the upfront cost of conversion might deter some private vehicle owners, the long-term savings in fuel and maintenance make CNG a compelling option. Commercial vehicles, especially those eligible for free conversions under PCNGi, benefit even more.
Possible downsides and challenges of CNG conversion
Despite the advantages, CNG conversion presents some challenges. One key issue is the weight of the CNG kit, particularly the cylinder, which can weigh up to 65kg.
This additional weight places strain on the vehicle’s suspension system. To mitigate this, vehicle owners are advised to ensure their suspension systems are in good condition or replaced if necessary.
Another concern is the space the CNG cylinder takes up, typically in the boot of the vehicle, reducing storage capacity. This can be inconvenient for drivers who regularly need the boot for storage.
Additionally, there are fewer CNG refill stations compared to the vast number of petrol and diesel stations in Lagos. This can be limiting for vehicle owners who may have to travel farther to refill their tanks.
These challenges, while important considerations, are manageable with proper maintenance and preparation, and they shouldn’t discourage vehicle owners from making the switch to CNG.
Where to convert vehicles to CNG in Lagos
The following centers have been chosen under the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi) for the free conversion of commercial vehicles. However, they also offer CNG conversion services for private vehicle owners and organizations:

As fuel prices in Lagos continue to rise, CNG is becoming an increasingly attractive alternative due to its lower cost and environmental benefits. However, misconceptions about CNG safety slow wider adoption, highlighting the need for greater awareness.
Vehicle owners should familiarize themselves with CNG system basics, including reading pressure levels and maintaining the system properly. Regular maintenance ensures that CNG systems remain safe and functional, without negatively affecting vehicle performance.
While the upfront cost of conversion might seem high, the long-term savings in fuel and reduced maintenance costs make CNG an appealing option for both private and commercial vehicles. Commercial vehicles, in particular, benefit from free conversions under PCNGi, making the switch even more advantageous.
