The e-CMR debate

The police Central Motor Registry (CMR) has always existed.

However, the Inspector General of Police announced that they were going to digitise the registry and create an electronic central motor registry information system.

He said that policemen would no longer need to stop motorists to demand for their papers because they would be able to access the registry from the computers in their patrol cars and determine if a vehicle is registered, if it has been stolen, etc. People whose cars have been stolen only need to inform the police and the cars would be flagged on the system and the patrol officers would be able to determine that the cars have been stolen simply by checking their in-car computer.

The police set a deadline for motorists to register for the e-CMR.

However, many activists, including the Nigerian Bar Association condemned the system. They said that the law does not permit the police to register vehicles and that the police was taking over the powers of other government agencies. They also condemned the fee that motorists would have to pay to register for the e-CMR (around ₦5,000 to ₦6,000) . They said that Nigerians are going through a lot and the police should not add to their burden. They threatened to sue the police if it forces motorists to have the e-CMR.

The Inspector General of Police subsequently suspended the enforcement of the e-CMR and said that they were going to use the time to sensitise stakeholders on the need for the e-CMR. He said that the law permits the police to develop strategies to combat crime and that it was not true that the e-CMR was illegal.

Note: It was only the enforcement of the e-CMR that was postponed/suspended. Motorists are still registering on the system.

e-CMR e-enforcement patrol van and gadgets. With these equipment, no stress for vehicle owners and policemen on duty. Technology at work. These will be launched when the police are ready for the enforcement. We, however, need to embark on massive public education and enlightenment on the importance and features of the e-CMR to Nigerians and our security system.

#FearlessInOctober: Take-It-Back Movement Demands Police Protection for Protests Across 11 States and Abuja

The Take-It-Back Movement has formally demanded police protection for their upcoming #FearlessInOctober protests in 11 states and Abuja.

This was made known in a letter submitted to Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun by the movement’s legal counsel, Inibehe Effiong. The Take It Back Movement outlined its plans for demonstrations aimed at addressing pressing issues, such as fuel and electricity prices, inflation, and other hardships faced by Nigerians.

The protest, organised to start on Nigeria’s Independence Day, also aims to demand an end to bad governance and advocate for accountability from those in power.

In the letter, it is noted that the #FearlessInOctober protest serves as a call to action for citizens to voice their concerns and hold leaders accountable for the deteriorating state of the nation.

It also reaffirmed the commitment of the Take-It-Back Movement to peaceful advocacy while urging the police to ensure the safety and protection of all citizens participating in the demonstration.

Sowore Unveils Protesters’ Non-Negotiable Demands Ahead of #FearlessInOctober Mass Action

As the #FearlessInOctober mass action approaches, human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has presented a list of non-negotiable demands to President Tinubu’s government on behalf of protesters.

Sowore, the convener of the #RevolutionNow Movement, emphasized that these demands reflect the urgent needs of the Nigerian people and should be addressed without delay.

Sowore, who laid out the demands during an interview with Daily Trust, said that their demands from the Bola Tinubu-led government touched on the economy, jobs, security and conditional reforms.

Focusing on the release of political prisoners and economic issues, Sowore said, “We want the release of all prisoners from last demonstrations and all political prisoners, including Nnamdi Kanu; living wage for Nigerian workers; reverse removal of subsidy protections for the masses; urgently address banditry, terrorism and other security issues;

“Introduce job creation programmes targeting the millions of unemployed youth; power sector and infrastructure investments to revitalise the economy; education sector reform; restructuring and constitutional reform; judicial sector reform and electoral reforms including diaspora voting.”

He added that,”Inflation has gone up. Insecurity has increased. Our people are drowning in floods because the government failed to secure the dams. Bandits wiped out an entire village just a few weeks ago. Things have gotten worse for the Nigerian people.”

“The protests will be peaceful and they will be national, across the country. The protests will hold across all parts of Nigeria because the scale of the devastation, hunger, insecurity, and hardship that this government has unleashed on Nigerians is national. I will emphasise again that these will be peaceful protests, as they’ve always been.

“The last protests were peaceful, yet the government met the protesters with batons and bullets.

“We will not be deterred, though. Our only weapon is truth, and no amount of force or violence will prevent us from speaking truth to power,” he stressed further.

He added, “Between the last protest just two months ago and now, petrol prices have risen by almost N300 per litre. The naira has further devalued, and prices have increased in the market. Bandits have taken over and killed off entire communities. Floods are devastating our cities.

“Under these circumstances, can anyone be surprised that the Nigerian people want to voice their displeasure with this government’s failure to address the issues affecting them?” he questioned.

“We are prepared to come out to protest. We are determined to do so peacefully. I can assure you that thousands of voices will be raised in protest on October 1. The pangs of hunger and groans of pain of the Nigerian people will not be drowned out by the government.

“How does the removal of subsidy protections for the common man benefit Nigerians? We have seen petrol prices go from N197 per liter to N1,100 and Nigerians should wait? Wait for what? Wait until they are all dead from hunger and suffering?

“Why should we wait before the government reverses its wicked policies on education? Tinubu and his co-travelers in government are all beneficiaries of free and high quality public education. Yet they are denying Nigerian youth the same benefits they enjoyed. Why should we wait before the government begins to address the problems of insecurity?

“Why should we wait before workers are given a living wage? Afterall this government has continued on a buying spree – purchasing new bullet proof cars, new airplanes, yatchs and the like while telling us Nigeria is broke.

“It took them just two weeks to pass a bill and change the national anthem. They’ve demonstrated a capacity to move fast on some issues. Now we need them to move with the same speed on these pressing matters. No. The wait is over. We demand action now.”

Kwara State Governor Launches CNG Conversion Workshop and Refueling Station.

AbdulRazaq's Initiative to Promote Cleaner, Cheaper Fuel Alternatives

In a pioneering move for environmental sustainability and economic efficiency, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has inaugurated a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion workshop, refueling station, and training center in Ilorin.

This marks Kwara as the first state in Nigeria to benefit from the Federal Government-led initiative aimed at reducing transportation costs and promoting cleaner energy alternatives.

The CNG initiative introduces buses that operate on compressed natural gas, a cleaner and more affordable alternative to conventional petrol and diesel fuels. This development is expected to significantly lower transportation costs across the state, providing much-needed relief amid rising fuel prices.

The introduction of CNG buses is expected to bring numerous benefits, including reduced transportation costs, lower emissions, and enhanced energy security.

The CNG conversion workshop will facilitate the transition of existing vehicles to CNG, while the refueling station ensures easy access to this alternative fuel. Additionally, the training center will equip technicians with the skills needed to support and maintain the new CNG infrastructure.

"This project not only addresses the immediate issue of high transportation costs but also aligns with global efforts to combat climate change by reducing our carbon footprint," AbdulRazaq added.

I told you that the Presidential CNG Initiative is giving buses to states. The buses are to be given (and in some cases, have been given) to state owned transport companies. (The PCNGI has a separate programme for private commercial bus operators).

You know that Nairaland has issues with photos, so you'll need to click on the links to see the pictures.

CNG is the same fuel that is used to generate electricity. The Akwa Ibom State Government has an electricity generating plant that it is not using and it has converted it into a CNG filling station and conversion training facility (it wants to train Akwa Ibom youths to convert petrol vehicles to CNG vehicles).

The team from the Presidential CNG Initiative were invited to inspect the facility.

I think it's a comprehension problem. I wrote:

There are too many CNG filling stations in Nigeria for me to list all of them, but these are lists of some of the major CNG chains in Nigeria (I can't list all the small companies).
And some people are coming to argue with me. Can you imagine that? I wrote that I can't list all the CNG stations and they are arguing, are they me??

OK, if they feel that they can list all the CNG stations in Nigeria, why don't they go ahead and list them? None of them has even attempted to.

Is that not crazy?

I only list the big chains because there are many CNG companies that own CNG filling stations, I am discovering new companies and stations every day and I can't possibly list all of them.

I didn't write that in Greek, it's in simple and easy to understand English.

Kai! Is it some kind of contagion or did they bring these people from a special place??

I have never seen people that are this slow!

1) Yesterday one guy accused me of failing to post a list of CNG filling stations. The crazy thing is that I had posted 3 lists of CNG stations right at the beginning.

OK, there are many people that can't read, but they will find it if you tell them. So I told him. It's right there on the first page.

This very slow guy came back and said that he was not referring to conversion centres, he was referring to filling stations. I therefore had to type out the names of the companies on the list so that he could find the list that was right there, the list that he should have seen if he could read.

Then the slow guy came back and said that the filling station in Akwa Ibom is in a remote village. He asked if I am telling him that he'll have to go to a remote village every time he wants to fill up.

Can you imagine that madness??

That's when I realised that there was no hope and engaging in a conversation with him was a waste of time.

Where did I tell him that he will have to do anything? Am I his father??

Do you know how many CNG stations are in Nigeria? Does he think that I can list all the CNG stations in Nigeria?? Can he list all the petrol stations in Nigeria?? Doesn't he have hands to search for a CNG station himself?? It took me less than a minute to find CNG stations in Uyo, can't he search for himself?? Must I hold his hand??

There are many companies that own CNG stations and I cannot name all of them. Many CNG stations were established last year. I only provide lists of the big chains (NIPCO, BOVAS, OANDO) not all the stations. For example, there's no CNG Gold in my lists. These people are adults and have brains and they should be able to search by themselves.

2) It has been said many times, Gazzuzz said it, I have posted it many times in the past few days and many others have posted it many times in the past few days that vehicles that run on CNG can also run on petrol. It's like a hybrid.

Another very slow guy has just said that it's impossible. Someone corrected him and he said that the person was lying. The person told him that he had a car that was powered by CNG (he sold it in 2018), yet this slow guy is still asking him if it's CNG. Maybe he should have written it in Greek for the slow guy to understand.

I assume that everybody knows what Alagbon is, but I think I need to explain in case I'm wrong.

Alagbon Close is the name of a street that is just off Ikoyi Road. It is not far from Ijeh Barracks, Radio Nigeria, State House and the Federal Secretariat.

There is a notorious police station that is on that close and that's what most people are referring to when they say "Alagbon".

That station has been the home of many important units, most notably the Federal Criminal and Investigation Bureau (the famous CID).

A lot of famous people have been detained there and in fact, that's where coupists were actually meant to be detained (before Obasanjo's decree). A lot of coupists have been detained there.

Orlando Owoh was detained there and that's why he sang that song.

I was going to post this in the morning when I thought I was free.

This man is one of three people that I thought were perennially appearing in court. I couldn't even remember what he was charged with when I wanted to post this in the morning, but I remember that he would appear on the NTA News almost once a week because they were reporting about his appearance in court.

If I remember correctly, his legal problems started around 1986 and lasted till around 1988. He was charged with being in possession of hard drugs, but many people believed that he was actually arrested because of his song about Dele Giwa.

The other two people that often appeared in court were Fred Ajidua (c1992 till the Goodluck Jonathan Administration) and the man that I had a strange encounter with. That man's legal problems began in 1993 or '94 and lasted till sometime when the Olusegun Obasanjo Administration was in office.

This song is about his Prison Experience and although I know the real name of the song, I call it "Alagbon" (the chorus went,

"I remember officer at Alagbon
I remember suspect at Alagbon
I remember sections at Alagbon" ).

(I wish I could find his X-rated attack on President Ibrahim Babangida, but I can't remember the name of the song).

Orlando Owoh - Experience (1988).

In less than one minute.

1) This is what the guy is referring to when he mentioned "remote village". NIPCO set up a mother station in a village in Oron. What does the term "mother station" mean? It means that, not only will CNG be dispensed there, but it will also supply CNG to other NIPCO stations in Akwa Ibom and the South-South in general.

2) TotalEnergies (Total) has also set up a mother station in Uyo.

3) CNG is the same gas that is used to generate electricity. The Akwa Ibom State Government has an old CNG power plant at the State Secretariat. It has converted the plant to a CNG center, to act as both a CNG filling station and a conversion centre. It is also training Akwa Ibom youths at the location, so that they'll be able to convert petrol powered vehicles into CNG hybrids.

4) Allegiant (Bluestone) CNG is working with the Akwa IIbom State University to establish CNG stations and conversion centres.

That was under 1 minute.

And there are many more.

Oyo government receives 20 CNG buses from FG

The CNG buses were presented to Pacesetter Transport Service (PTS), an agency of the state government

by Toheeb Babalola September 3, 2024

The Oyo State Government has received 20 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses from the federal government to ease the pressure brought on commuters by the increase in petrol price.

Micheal Oluwagbemi, the chief executive officer and programme director of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (P-CNGI), presented the buses to the Pacesetter Transport Service (PTS), an agency of the state government, in Eleyele, Ibadan.

“We present these 20 buses as part of a sustainable partnership with Pacesetter Transport Service to generate income, as they are valuable assets.

“We need more such investments to ensure a more sustainable mass transit system, contributing to a brighter future for the state and Nigeria,” he said.

Mr Oluwagbemi said President Bola Tinubu had urged technicians and engineers to use gas resources to advance the transportation industry.

“We are starting to take the right steps, though it requires us to endure some challenges. We cannot return to subsidising our own impoverishment. As a team, we are committed to this effort.”

Ibraheem Salami, chairman and sole administrator of PTS, accepted the CNG buses on behalf of the state government and thanked the federal government and Mr Tinubu for the initiative.

He said that the agency had only five operational buses when he took office, but the number has since increased to 81.

Mr Salami said CNG is the best solution to the state’s transportation problems, noting that Governor Seyi Makinde backs the project to mitigate the effects of subsidy removal.

He requested that the P-CNGI provide an additional 100 CNG buses to cover more routes within the state.
