joseph1832: I'm more interested in that Entertainment Allowance and what it entails. Like they pay them allowance to carry olosho? 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️ Business lunch, receiving official guests, etc. naptu2: Aha! This thing is back again, but I am too lazy to search for my old posts. Luckily it coincides with something similar that I want to write about, so I will lump both of them into one short post.
Imagine that you work for a company and the company expects you to close a deal with a certain wealthy and famous client. You invite the client to dinner or you have a business lunch. That dinner or lunch will not take place at Chicken Republic or Mr Biggs. It'll be at an expensive restaurant. Of course the company will pay because you were there on company business. But you must make sure you close the deal. The company will be happy to pay because the benefits of the deal outweigh the cost of dinner.
It's the same with governments. Nigerians are being attacked in South Africa, Nigerian companies want to invest in South Africa but have hit road blocks, while South Africa's huge investments in Nigeria are being threatened by bad feeling on the streets and conflicts with regulators. Therefore you have a state visit to sort out the problems at the highest level. Of course a state banquet will be part of that visit.
You are a state governor and there are problems that you want the Federal Government to assist you with. Worse still, you have things that you want to do, but federal officials are making things difficult for you. Organise a state visit by the president, show him the problems first hand, get him to commission some projects that you've done, so that he'll see that you are working and not just whining. Of course you also need to have a state banquet as part of the visit.
That's what I mean by entertainment budget.
The other nonsense has started again. "Why do presidents travel"?
I have told you the most important reason above (the South Africa example). Look at the other recent example. Nigeria desperately needs investment in infrastructure. Siemens is providing equipment to improve our electricity grid. You want to expand that partnership that you inherited (you want to include renewable energy).
Germany desperately needs gas, because their biggest provider (Russia) is playing politics with it. Nigeria has a lot of gas and badly needs money. Then you are saying that the German Chancellor should not travel to Nigeria and the Nigerian President should not travel to Germany?? How will they do it? By juju? No sane person will say that.
The worst thing, the Nigerian pendulum, the reason that I wrote about this in the past is that it is the same people that say that the Nigerian President should not travel that will claim that Nigeria is not respected if the president does not travel and does not appear at international fora. |

WHAT AN IMPACT FROM JOE ECHEGINI!
Jennifer Onyi Echegini took very little to settle into her new football adventure with the Juventus Women shirt. In January the move to Juventus was made official after her experience in the United States, from then on a series of performances worth remembering for a total of 16 appearances marked by 10 goals and 1 assist.
From her debut on 13 January in the home victory against Milan, to the first goal, eight days later, which was decisive for the victory in the final match on the Sassuolo pitch, up to the first double in her history with Juventus in the Italian derby against Inter in mid-February. For the class of 2001, however, there was space, in these first months with the Juventus Women shirt, also for a magnificent hat-trick in the 4-0 triumph at the end of March against Fiorentina. In short, the numbers define Joe Echegini's impact on the Juventus Women universe. https://www.juventus.com/it/news/articoli/juventus-women-impatto-echegini |

Translated from Italian by Google. EBAY MVP, ECHEGINI IS THE BEST UNDER 23 IN SERIES A!
**Jennifer Onyi Echegini has a decisive impact** with the reality of Juventus Women. Having arrived in Turin last January directly from the United States, the midfielder born in 2001 took very little time to settle into the new reality, scoring 10 goals and 1 assist in 16 appearances. Numbers that have earned her, in just a few months, the title of eBay MVP as the best Under 23 in the women's Serie A in the season just ended, demonstrated by a dedicated commemorative plaque that will be delivered at the beginning of next season.
Congratulations, Joe! https://www.juventus.com/it/news/articoli/mvp-ebay-echegini-miglior-under-23-serie-a

Meanwhile, the Transmission Company of Nigeria had accused the electricity unions of chasing away workers from the control centers and beating and injuring some of them before shutting down the national grid. See previous thread here: https://www.nairaland.com/8113223/strike-blackout-workers-shut-downNLC to TCN: You’ll be held liable for any injury inflicted on workers by military
Says labour can’t be intimidated, blackmailed
—Accuses TCN of spreading falsehood
By Johnbosco Agbakwuru
ABUJA — THE Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has accused the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, of spreading falsehood against the peaceful protesting workers and warned that the company will be held liable for any injury inflicted on workers by the military.
The NLC also said that it will not be intimidated or blackmailed by the spread of falsehood against workers by the TCN.
Recall that the TCN, had claimed that some of its workers were attacked on Monday by the protesting workers who were enforcing compliance of the directive of the two labour centres, the NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, for an indefinite strike.
A statement signed by the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, reminded the TCN that it is not the only company impacted by the massive withdrawal of service across the nation by Nigerian workers.
NLC further said that the deployment of military men to its locations by the company is a clear abuse and insult on the military especially in a democracy.
The statement read: “The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) categorically states that Nigerian workers will not be intimidated by the management of any organization or government entity over our rightful decision to withdraw services through the indefinite nationwide strike that commenced earlier this morning.
“The spreading of outright falsehood to mislead the public instead of working with other stakeholders to resolve the issues raised by Nigerian workers via the NLC and TUC is not helpful in any way. It will rather inflame the anger of the suffering masses who are already burdened by the cruel policies of the federal government.
“It is important that we therefore address the Press statement by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) where they made false claims regarding the indefinite nationwide strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).
“The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) should understand that the company is not the only company impacted by the massive withdrawal of service across the nation by Nigerian workers.
“It should therefore not make it a TCN affair as other organisations also suffer one breakdown in service or the other as a result of the nationwide industrial action.
“The Management of TCN ought to have realised that the NLC and TUC issued a notice to the federal government since the beginning of May, 2024 on the issues of non-completion of the National Minimum Wage negotiation exercise and passage into Law and the vexatious hike in electricity tariff.
“We had demanded a completion of the Wage setting process and a reversal of the hike in electricity tariff back to N66/kwh without any positive response from the government.
“We had thought that a responsible and proactive Management or organisation would have anticipated the impact of any nationwide strike on its operation and would have joined other stakeholders in urging the federal government to meet the demands of Nigerian workers.
“Unfortunately, the TCN was not responsive enough and could therefore not take adequate steps to assist government avert the indefinite nationwide strike.
“Perhaps, TCN is not deeply worried about the plight of Nigerian workers who suffer in penury as a result of their poor pay thus decided not to take any positive action. In any case, we are crying because government policies have impoverished us and made living exceedingly difficult.”
Continuing, the NLC said, “One wonders whether TCN’s management needs education on the dynamics of industrial action? It is not true that anybody was manhandled by us in any TCN location.
“May be, TCN in its effort to scuttle the strike tried to force workers to be at work not realising the resolve of all workers to stay away.
“Why would the grid not go down when the workers who operate them decide to withdraw their service? That is how it works and it further demonstrates that without workers, no wheel can turn; no work can take place any where.
“Nigerian workers led by the NLC and TUC have exercised due caution and unusual patience in our engagement with our social partners and this restraint has been grossly abused unfortunately which has led us to the present impasse.
“Trying to buck pass instead of accepting blame and taking necessary steps to put its house in order will not allow the transmission company of Nigeria (TCN) make discernible progress.
“We would like the Organisation to take adequate measures to ensure that it discharges its responsibilities to Nigerians especially the Electricity sector instead of dissipating its energy on trying to insult Nigerian workers by its deliberate peddling of falsehood.
“We have been duly informed that the TCN management has resorted to the use of the military in its effort at intimidating and harassing workers in its employ who are carrying out their lawful and democratic duties at various TCN plants around Nigeria.
“We warn that the Management of TCN would be held liable for any injury inflicted on any worker by their resort to the use of the powers of the military. It is also important that we inform TCN that deploying military men to its locations is a clear abuse and insult on the military especially in a democracy.
“We are sure that members of the military so misused by this deployment are not happy with the management and the authorities who have authorised the deployment.
“The NLC and TUC remain steadfast in their commitments to the emancipation of downtrodden Nigerians and will persist in the struggle for a fair and just living wage, as well as the reversal of the excessive electricity tariff hike.
“We call on all Nigerians to stand in solidarity with us as we demand the implementation of policies that prioritize the wellbeing of the people. We will not back down and we will not give in to any blackmail, intimidation or harassment.
“We use this opportunity to appreciate all Nigerians for their solidarity on the first day of this indefinite nationwide engagement and call on them as we move into the second day of this struggle to come out in numbers and join the nationwide industrial action.
“It is our collective struggle and together, we can throw off the shackles that have kept us marooned in the cesspit of massive and excruciating suffering.
“Let us meet again at the barricades! We can collectively assist the government to govern our nation better in such a way that the majority benefits from their policies and programs.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2024/06/nlc-to-tcn-youll-be-held-liable-for-any-injury-inflicted-on-workers-by-military/ |

Breaking: FG, Labour to meet tomorrow over strike, minimum wage
By Victor AhiumaYoung
The Federal Government has, through the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, NSIWC, summoned a meeting of the tripartite committee on the new national minimum wage for tomorrow, June 4.
The last meeting of the committee ended abruptly on May 31. This was after the Organised Labour negotiating team walked out following the government and organised private sector, OPS’s refusal to go beyond the N60,000 they had earlier offered.
Vanguard gathered that tomorrow’s meeting will be by 10 am.
According to sources, the government is alarmed by the level of compliance and participation by workers in the first day of the indefinite nationwide strike.
Compliance
Meanwhile, the unions shut down the country’s electricity industry in compliance with the strike order.
Acting General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, Dominic Igwebike, told Vanguard that the power sector had been shut down.
Also, all loading activities at fuel depots in Lagos have been halted by the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG.
However, Vanguard was informed that all loaded trucks were allowed to leave the depots, including aviation terminals, for safety purposes.
According to a labour leader, “We don’t want to keep a loaded truck within the depot because it is highly flammable.”
Similarly, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, has shut down port operations across the country.
An official of the Union told Vanguard that besides Lagos ports, all other port formations in Port Harcourt, Warri, Onne, Calabar, and others have been closed.
According to the official, they would remain shut until further notice from the national leadership of organised labour.
The same scenario is playing out in other sectors across the country, including the FCT. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2024/06/breaking-fg-labour-to-meet-tomorrow-over-strike-minimum-wage/File image of government and Labour representatives at a previous meeting.
