*ICE-BREAKER/MEET & GREET FOR NIGERIAN NAVY 68TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION*
The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, hosted an ice-breaker/meet & greet for the Nigerian Navy 68th Anniversary Celebration on Wednesday 29th May 2024 at EKO HOTEL and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The Ice-Breaker was an opportunity for invited dignitaries to meet the CNS & principal officers of the NN in a relaxed and informal setting. Invited guests, navies & organisations were able to interact with each other in the convivial atmosphere of the Ice-Breaker.
It was an evening that personified the borderless nature of international waters by breaking down the walls between persons of different nationalities and climes, thus setting the stage for an International Maritime Conference that promises to be exciting and engaging.
Notably, in attendance were a former Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral OS Ibrahim and two former Chiefs of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral VK Ombu and Vice Admiral SO Afolayan.
The Nigerian Navy (NN) takes Civil Military Cooperation (CIMIC) as one of its core policies. In light of this and in commemoration with the NN @68 celebration, the Headquaters Logistics Command, led by the Flag Officer Commanding, Rear Admiral C Onyemaobi, in conjunction with Naval Medical Centre Oghara conducted a medical rhapsody in Ethiope West LGA of Delta State on Monday 27 May 2024.
On behalf of the host community, the Chairman Chief Hope Abijor appreciated the NN for the good gesture.
In observation of the NIgeriann Navy @68th celebration, the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) had her Jummat Prayers on Friday 24 May 2024 and Interdenominational Service on Sunday 26 May 2024. Both events were attended by the Muslim and Christain personnel and their families.
The Flag Officer Commanding ENC delivered the Chief of the Naval Staff Goodwill message to the personnel and their families.
On Sunday 26 May, the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla and the National President, Naval Officers’ Wives Association (NOWA), Mrs Ijeoma Ogalla attended the Interdenominational Church Service at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church, Mogadishu Cantonment Abuja to mark the Nigerian Navy (NN) 68th Anniversary.
The Service was attended by Principal Staff Officers from Naval Headquarters, Officers, ratings and civilian staff of the NN. The service was convivial and spiritual.
The CNS expressed gratitude to the ALMIGHTY GOD for all successes of the NN. He also thanked the President and Commander-in-Chief, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for his unflinching support to the Armed Forces and the NN in particular.
The service ended with prayers made for the NN, Armed Forces and Nigeria. Thereafter the CNS and NOWA President took pictures with all the groups present.
On 27 May 2024, the Western Naval Command (WNC) of the Nigerian Navy (NN) hosted a Combined Sea Exercise 16nautical miles South-West of Lagos Fairway Buoy. Four Navies participated in the Exercise as follows:
NNS KANO 🇳🇬(Nigerian Navy) BNS APA 🇧🇷 (Brazilian Navy) ITS BETTICA 🇮🇹 (Italian Navy) SP FUROR 🇪🇸 (Spanish Navy)
The Exercises conducted were; PASSEX Form 1 and Form D
The Ex which were a rehearsal for the forthcoming Regional Maritime Exercise (REMEX) commenced at about 1230 and was concluded at about 1330.
It APPEARS that, in addition to NNS Ochuzo A506, the NN had rather quietly taken delivery of two units of 32 metre fast patrol craft.
Here’s why this is almost certainly the case.
On 2 Sept 2023, the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, revealed that the NN had taken delivery of two new ships without elaborating.
This revelation was made during the Passing out Parade of batch 34 Trainees of Nigerian Navy Basic Training School, Onne
Fast forward to May 2024, the Chief of Policy+Plans, Rear Admiral Joseph Akpan brought into sharp focus the acquisition, this time with greater specificity, the acquisition of, among other platforms, TWO 32 metre patrol craft.
Per ships afloat at this time, the only known 32 metre platform sailing our waters is NNS Dorina P101 and that ship was inducted in 2014.
She is an OCEA FPB 98 Mk.II type
Coincidentally, in Q1 2023, OCEA announced her ninth order from the NN within a space of roughly a decade and that order included three units of 32 metre patrol craft
My measured guess is that, since that remains, among several other larger ship types, the only subsisting order for 32 metre patrol craft, the NN have probably taken delivery of two of the three units of OCEA 32 metre patrol craft
The current order for ships by the NN
- three 32m patrol craft(France) - one 33m patrol craft (gifted by Korea) - two 38m patrol craft (Malaysia) - three 46m patrol craft (China) - two SDB IV and SDB V (Nigeria) - one 57m FAC(gifted by Dearsan) - two 76m patrol corvettes(Turkey)
PRESIDENT TINUBU AT 2024 MARITIME CONFERENCE: Africa Must Utilize Investment Opportunities In Nigeria's Blue Economy
* Urges Navy to secure nation's maritime future, seeks regional, global alliance
President @officialABAT has invited countries worldwide, especially those on the African continent, to take advantage of the investment opportunities that abound in Nigeria's blue economy.
Accordingly, he implored the Nigerian Navy and its African partners as well as other stakeholders to focus on achieving a secure and prosperous maritime future that is beneficial to all, saying Nigeria cannot afford to fail in its responsibilities to Africa and the world at large.
The President made the call on Thursday when he declared open the 2024 International Maritime Conference held at the Naval Dockyard, Victoria Island, Lagos.
President @officialABAT who was represented at the conference by his deputy, Vice President @KashimSM, observed that while a flourishing blue economy is the bedrock of every vibrant nation, the only way to attain such an economy is through "a progressive naval force."
Vice President Kashim Shettima represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the opening ceremony of the 2024 International Maritime Conference held today at the Naval Dockyard in Victoria Island, Lagos.
The Southern Nigerian Marine was created in 1893 and the Northern Nigerian Marine was created in 1900. Both services were merged to form the Nigerian Marine in 1914.
The Nigerian Marine was broken up to create 3 organisations ahead of Nigeria's independence. The first was the Nigerian Ports Authority, the second was the National Inland Waterways Department and the third was the Nigerian Naval Force, which was created in 1956.
The Nigerian Navy is thus celebrating its 68th anniversary.
Activities lined up to mark the occasion include an international maritime conference, a naval exercise, interdenominational Christian and jumat services, polo and gold tournaments, ceremonial sunset and dinner, medical outreach and the commissioning of new naval vessels.
