Maria believed she was romancing a prince from Dubai, captivated by his flirtatious smile and declarations of affection he showered on her during live video calls. But the suitor was an AI deepfake, making her yet another victim of an online romance scam.

The case illustrates how fraudsters posing as the real-life crown prince of Dubai ensnare victims by cultivating online relationships before swindling them out of money, with researchers tracing some of the scams to crime syndicates in Nigeria.

Maria met the scammer impersonating Prince Hamdan bin Mohammed, also known by his pen name Fazza, on a dating site before the conversation moved to a messaging app where he bombarded her with romantic messages.

"He kept on messaging me even when I was sleeping," the Filipino domestic worker told AFP, requesting that her real name and age be withheld.

"It felt like there was a love spell that connected our minds."

In one recording of a WhatsApp video call seen by AFP, the scammer, appearing lifelike as the prince, flickered on the screen. His words matched his lip movements, but not the prince's voice.

"Hello beloved," the voice told Maria. "I really appreciate your love and support."

Maria, who was initially too lovelorn to suspect fraud, lost a year's worth of savings.

The scammer manipulated her into paying 100,000 pesos (US$1,625) for what he claimed were a marriage certificate and a "royal membership card," which he said would help her secure a job in Dubai.

Her suspicion arose when he proposed meeting her at a hotel and demanded another 60,000 pesos ($974) for the booking. When she scrutinized his Facebook page, which has since been taken down, she noticed the account was based in Nigeria.

She cut off communication, sending one final message: "Go to hell, scammer."

"Many people told me it's good I didn't go crazy after this experience," Maria said.

The fraud is part of a broader ecosystem of what have become known as "fake Dubai prince" scams targeting both hearts and wallets.

Scammers exploit the Emirati royal's likeness by drawing on his vast online presence, including his more than 17 million Instagram followers, and sometimes even copying the prince's authentic poems to deceive victims.

AFP identified multiple Facebook groups impersonating the royal, some with thousands of followers, inviting users to WhatsApp or Telegram chats with the "prince."

The groups post manipulated but lifelike images, including one depicting the prince on one knee and holding a ring, and another showing him offering a red rose alongside the caption: "Sweetheart can I get a 'love you' on WhatsApp?"

While some users warned in the comments that the posts are scams, many others responded with hearts and blowing-kiss emojis.

As the fraud spreads, awareness groups have sprung up to alert users, including one on Instagram called "Do not fall for fake prince."

A change.org petition titled "Stop Fazza Scam" called on Sheikh Hamdan's staff to raise awareness against scammers impersonating the royal using Dubai phone numbers and "requesting large sums of money, either as donations or marriage certificates, all of which are forged."

"Significant payments are requested in banks in countries other than those of victims, sometimes even in crypto currencies, making it harder to trace," the petition said.

'Technology is improving'

Dubai authorities did not respond to AFP's request for comment.

He is far from the only public figure whose identity has been exploited by scammers. Last year, French authorities launched a probe to identify fraudsters posing as Brad Pitt who scammed a woman out of 830,000 euros ($945,000).

The Global Anti-Scam Alliance estimates that consumers worldwide lost $442 billion to scams, including romance fraud, last year.

It was unclear which AI tools were used to generate the real-time video chats with Maria.

The internet is awash with AI-powered face-swapping technology and a new generation of motion-control tools capable of producing highly realistic videos, allowing users to precisely manipulate a person's movements and facial expressions in real time.

'The technology is improving rapidly, and it is likely that soon real-time video deepfakes will become better and better," Cornell University's David Rand told AFP.

"Once this happens, it becomes fundamentally impossible to tell whether any not-in-person conversation is real."

Google is facing backlash over plans to release millions of bacteria-infected mosquitoes in two states, a project critics have dubbed one of the largest open-air biological experiments in US history.

Backed by Google's parent company Alphabet, the proposal seeks federal approval to deploy 32 million modified mosquitoes annually across California and Florida beginning next year.

If approved, the two-year program would result in a total of 64 million mosquitoes being released into the environment.

The aim is to reduce populations of disease-carrying mosquitoes using what researchers describe as 'good bugs' - males carrying a naturally occurring bacterium called Wolbachia. Male mosquitoes also do not bite.

When the infected males mate with wild females, the females still lay eggs, but the eggs fail to develop and hatch, gradually reducing mosquito populations over successive generations.

While the method has been around for decades, many Americans are outraged by the prospect of releasing millions of insects into the wild, with some declaring: 'This must be stopped.'

Even elected officials have joined the criticism, with Tennessee Republican Representative Tim Burchett questioning why a technology company was involved in releasing millions of mosquitoes, warning against interfering with nature.

'Have we not learned our lesson with Kudzu, Sparrows, Black Birds [and] Asian Carp? Should I go on?' Burchett wrote on X. 'Don't mess with the balance of nature.'

Burchett was referring to several infamous introductions of non-native species that spread far beyond their intended use and caused significant ecological disruptions after being introduced by humans.

One X user posted: 'I want everyone to stop and ask what interest Google has in releasing mosquitoes.

'They're a tech company. Not an environmental group. Not a non-profit. Not a government. A tech company.'

Another wrote: 'There should be public consensus before anything like this is done. It's dangerous.'

However, lab-grown and genetically modified mosquitoes have been released across several US states, including Florida, California and Texas, since 2021 to combat disease-carrying populations.

Google's involvement comes through Verily, a life sciences company owned by Alphabet.

In 2016, Verily launched the Debug Project, an effort aimed at reducing the spread of mosquito-borne diseases by suppressing populations of Aedes aegypti, an invasive species responsible for transmitting viruses such as Zika, dengue and chikungunya.

The current proposal targets Aedes aegypti, a human-biting mosquito known for spreading dangerous diseases including Zika, dengue fever, yellow fever and chikungunya.

According to the Debug team, roughly 40 percent of the world's population is at risk from diseases spread by the insect, which has expanded across tropical, subtropical and even some temperate regions around the globe.

Researchers breed millions of Wolbachia-carrying males in specialized facilities before separating them from females, which are capable of biting and spreading disease.

The goal is to dramatically reduce, and potentially eliminate, local populations of Aedes aegypti.

The proposal has also drawn comparisons to a controversial mosquito project backed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

While Gates did not directly release mosquitoes, his foundation funded research involving mosquito-control technologies. The insects, however, were not deployed in the US.

A Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation spokesperson told AFP: 'The foundation does not fund any work involving mosquito release in the United States.'

However, the project sparked fierce backlash and fueled a wave of conspiracy theories online.

Some claimed the mosquitoes were part of a covert effort to reduce the human population, secretly deliver vaccines or mRNA technology through bites, or serve as a tool for broader government and corporate control.

Others argued that suppressing mosquito populations could disrupt ecosystems and food chains, reflecting growing distrust of public health initiatives, Big Tech and billionaire-backed scientific projects in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Not everyone opposes the proposal, however. 'Wolbachia has been used in mosquito control programs for years with promising results,' one X user posted.

'Healthy skepticism is fine, but it's worth separating science fiction fears from evidence-based public health strategies.'

This is my fear: Unfortunately kidnapping has become normal in Nigerian society and in order to get more attention kidnappers need to "shock" the society. Infidelity didn't start today, so I am always surprised when people act like it is a modern problem. Married women are dating other men. Married men especially. Na Chike own cast, but it happening steady in this religious Nigeria. In the past there was no social media and widespread technology to establish evidence. Also it is an ego thing for men, many would take it to their grave than admit it openly.

Either way, paternity fraud is terrible.
Away from all the agenda and gender war, no woman should cheat and pass off a child to another man. It is unfair to the child and the man too. A very high level of betrayal that should be shunned. If everyone continues like this, the family unit would breakdown in a few years.

The Family unit won't break down, if the man goes on to remarry but getting it right (This is paramount). When unfortunate things like this happen which can happen to anyone, how the future is going to be for the man and his children now entirely depends on the quality of his decision. And that decision lies in the next woman he goes on to marry.

As a man, you can afford to make mistake with the first woman you go on altar with but for a second time, I have never seen a man who goes on to make a mistake again and his entirely universe (everything he has built, children, asset etc) completely did not fade into nothing, whether the man is innocent, good, bad does not matter. The outcome always ends up the same.


As for the woman, I have never come across a woman that committed infidelity and not dying in less than 7 years later (especially those with a very faithful man), the ones that did not die, their life become so clearly miserable that i as a person that hardly judges people and overlook people grave errors find it utterly difficult to still roll or be seen with them (This sounds philosophical but it is true)
