EducationRe: The Trials, Tribulations And Triumphs Of Graduating With A Firstclass Degree by naturalwaves: 11:23pm On Apr 27, 2025
Odey1997:
The journey of a thousand miles starts from those little steps, no matter how insignificant they are. At the end of the tunnel through the different ASUU strikes, setbacks, and delays I can comfortably say I triumphed.

Right from my secondary school days, it hasn’t been a smooth ride. Immediately after completing my high school education, I took up employment as an assistant teacher in a primary school. This choice sharpened my intellect to a large extent. However, seeing some of my classmates gaining admission, especially those born with a silver spoon, created a hunger in me to strive harder. Though the salary was meagre, persistence became my watchword. To compound the whole scenario, I came from a family that wasn’t financially buoyant. The struggle of being trained by a single mother and supported by siblings was a burden too heavy to bear.

Before even picking the required JAMB form, I was fully aware of the adversities ahead. Within a year and a couple of months, I was able to save up a considerable amount from my salary, picked the JAMB form, aced the exams, and met all the requirements in the brochure to secure admission.

Sometimes, I get this singular question: what spurred my interest in studying Sociology?
My interest in this field can be remotely tied to my flair for research. That inquisitive nature is hard to deny. Sociology afforded me the opportunity to broaden my horizons on the nucleus of human society and its diverse social phenomena.

My start as a fresher is one I would never forget in a hurry. All the endless hours at the UNICAL e-library paid off, even when mosquitoes feasted on my frail body during night classes. As a dogged Malabite, I endured through it all. At the end of that session, I had lost a considerable amount of weight and had a similar semblance to the emaciated look of a skeleton. Lo and behold, when results were posted on the portal, a CGPA of 4.74 propelled me to study even harder.

My sophomore year, in 200 level, was the most difficult and hardest to juggle. My whole world came crashing down. Imagine a high-flying student dropping from a CGPA of 4.74 down to 4.44. This period destabilized my mental health. The feeling of inadequacy kicked in rapidly; I became depressed and even suicidal.

However, what kept me going was the encouragement from a few friends, family, and lecturers. This was a period I became a social recluse.

300 level was one I would term a redemption period. Academically, my grades leapt back up again, and after that session, my CGPA soared to 4.56, with a GPA that drastically increased to 4.80.

Taking a cue from Karl Marx, who opined that:
"Men can make their history but not of their own free will. The circumstances under which they do so are not chosen by them, but inherited from the past,"
I believe the situations we find ourselves in sometimes tend to change the whole narrative. However, the choices we make afterwards can either take us far or leave us redundant.

Today, I’m elated to utter that I am amongst the first two graduates from the Department of Sociology, faculty of social sciences University of Calabar (UNICAL), to graduate with a first-class degree.

You said Nigerian students are among the best in the world while using the IMO as a pointer to back up your point. As a Nigerian, I do not doubt the fact that Nigerians are intelligent. However, our performances in the IMO have been far from impressive. We have one of the worst performances in the competition. Since we started participating, we have won just 5 bronze medals. I hope you know how the medals are even distributed. That a bronze is won does not mean that a country or the representative was 3rd for that year. Nigeria is not even in the top 100 performing countries by medals. So, always get your facts right before you bring wrong information to the public domain.

EducationRe: British Schools In Nigeria: My Opinion. by naturalwaves: 8:43pm On Apr 01, 2025
1Alex:
Why British Schools Should hold on:
Nigerian Students Are Already Proving Themselves

The news that British schools plan to open in Nigeria has caught many people's attention. But before we celebrate, we need to ask: Do we really need them? The idea that British schools are better is outdated and ignores the great achievements of Nigerian students. In fact, Nigerian students in local schools have proven time and again that they can compete with—and even beat—their peers from Britain and other countries. If our students are already doing so well, why bring in British schools?

Nigerian Students Are Among the Best in the World

Anyone who doubts the quality of Nigerian primary and secondary education should look at how well our students perform in global competitions. Every year, Nigerian children show they don’t need foreign schools to be the best. Here are some examples:

International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO): Nigerian students have won medals, solving tough math problems that even experts struggle with.

Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF): Our young scientists have come up with groundbreaking ideas that have gained global recognition.

Spelling Bees: Nigerian children have won big international spelling competitions, showing their intelligence and ability to handle pressure.

These aren’t just one-time events. They prove that our students are smart, hardworking, and capable—without needing British schools.

British Schools Are Not Perfect

Many people think British schools are automatically better, but that’s not true. In fact, the UK’s education system has its own problems:

Too Much Focus on Exams: British schools often push students to memorize answers for tests instead of teaching them to think creatively and solve real-life problems. Nigerian schools encourage more problem-solving skills, which help students do well in global competitions.

Mental Health Issues: From what I have read, many British students suffer from stress, anxiety, and depression due to extreme academic pressure. Do we really need to bring these issues to Nigeria?

Education Inequality: In the UK, rich students attend top private schools while public schools struggle with funding. If British schools come to Nigeria, they will likely serve only the rich, leaving the majority of students behind.

Instead of fixing Nigeria’s education system, British schools might create more problems.

Nigerian Schools Teach Strength and Creativity

One of the best things about Nigerian schools is how they teach students to be strong and creative. Despite challenges like large class sizes and limited resources, Nigerian students still excel. This shows their determination and ability to think outside the box.

British schools, on the other hand, operate in comfortable environments where students don’t face many struggles. While this might seem like an advantage, it often makes students less prepared for real-life challenges. Nigerian students learn how to succeed even in tough conditions, making them stronger and more innovative.

British Schools Will Widen the Gap Between the Rich and Poor

One major problem with bringing British schools to Nigeria is that they will only be affordable for the wealthy. Instead of improving education for all Nigerians, these schools will mostly serve rich families, leaving regular students with fewer opportunities.

A better solution would be to invest in making our local schools better. If we train teachers, improve school facilities, and create strong educational programs, we can give every Nigerian child a chance to succeed—not just a privileged few.

Nigerian Schools Teach Culture and Identity

Education is not just about books and exams. It’s also about knowing who you are and where you come from. Nigerian schools teach students about their history, traditions, and values. This helps young people stay connected to their roots while preparing them for a global future.

British schools, however, follow a Western curriculum that may not reflect Nigerian culture. Students in these schools might struggle to balance their Nigerian identity with the foreign education they receive. Instead of embracing their heritage, they may feel lost between two worlds.

We Should Celebrate and Improve Our Own Schools

Instead of looking to foreign schools for validation, Nigeria should focus on making its own education system stronger. The success of our students in international competitions proves that we already have what it takes to produce top thinkers, innovators, and leaders. What we need is more investment in education to make sure every Nigerian child has access to quality learning.

We don’t need British schools to tell us we are great. Our students are already proving it. Now, we must build on that success by improving our schools, supporting our teachers, and ensuring that all Nigerian children—rich or poor—get a chance to shine.

Conclusion

The idea that British schools are better is a false belief based on old thinking. Nigerian students have already shown they can compete and win on the global stage. Instead of importing foreign schools that will only benefit the rich, we should focus on strengthening our own system. True success doesn’t come from copying others—it comes from believing in ourselves and building on our strengths. Nigerian schools and students are already shining. Now, let’s make sure they shine even brighter.
Give me the names of Nigerians that have won International Math Olympiad. Do you know what IMO is? Nigeria has never emerged first in IMO. I stopped reading when I saw that. It only means that the remainder of your article is a hogwash.

Florence Ajimobi, the former First Lady of Oyo State, has endured unimaginable grief over the past few years. She has suffered the loss of her husband, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, who died from COVID-19 complications in June 2020. A mesoleum was built in his memory.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SL_qEVtTS7g?si=Gj_yUoKQufqaA4QR

Her heartbreak continued when her mother, Mrs. Victoria Amudoaghan, passed away just a year later. Then, in March 2025, Florence's eldest daughter, Abisola Kola-Daisi, a successful entrepreneur and socialite, died at the age of 44, leaving behind her husband and three children.

Reports also indicate that Florence lost her sister in Lebanon in 2022. These consecutive tragedies have compounded her grief, testing her strength and resilience.

Despite facing an overwhelming wave of sorrow, Florence Ajimobi has shown remarkable courage and strength. Losing loved ones is a profound and painful experience, and her ability to cope with these losses is truly admirable.
If you want to do well in your blogging journey, make researches well and use appropriate pictures, you talked about her mother, no picture. Also, reduce the use of AI to write. You can relay this to the owner of the channel if you're not the owner.

SULBELL:
Equation 1: 2x−2y=5
−2y = −2x+5
 y= x – 5/2
 y = x − 2.5
find y if x= -3 up to x = 3
x y
-3 -5.5
-2 -4.5
-1 -3.5
0 -2.5
1 -1.5
2 -0.5
3 0.5

Equation 2: 2x + 3y + 1 = 0
3y= −2x − 1
 y = − 23x −13
y = −2/3x − 1/3
using same -3 to 3 you have the table
x y
-3 1.6667
-2 1
-1 0.3333
0 -0.3333
1 -1
2 -1.6667
3 -2.3333

When you trace the point of intersect, the two lines intersect at (1.3, −1.2), which is the solution

I made y subject of formular and I couldn't go any further
Very good. You have made a very good progress. Trust me, we will finish this all by yourself.

In the first place you made y the subject where you got : y= x - 5/2, you will substitute different values of x in to it to get y. Let's start from x = -3.
When x = - 3,
y = -3 - 5/2
y= -3 - 2.5
y= - 5.5

When x = -2,
y= -2 -2.5
y= -4.5

Continue like that

Do for all the values of x from -3 to + 3 which are
-3,-2,-1,0,1,2,3.

Do for all these values to get the respective values of y for the first equation.

I could have easily just solved this for you but I want you to learn it. Let me know once you're done with this.

2x-2y=5
2x+3y+1=0

Using graphical method, thanks
You can't expect someone to do that for you here. Rather, be open to learning and ask them to explain to you.
Take equation 1 and make y the subject of formula
Take equation 2 and make y the subject of formula

Now, select values of x from say -3 down to +3
Set up a first table for equation 1

When x = -3, find y
When x = -2, find y etc etc till you get to the point where X = +3

Set up the second table again with the equation 2 where you made y the subject following similar steps .

You now have 2 tables for 2 different equations

Plot your points on the graph and select any convenient scale of your choice that would cover all values.

Use table 1 to plot the points. When you're done, draw a straight line through the points.

Use table 2 to plot the points there as well. When you're done, draw a straight line through those points.

The two lines are going to intersect. Trace the point of intersection to the y axis and note the point . That's the value of y. Trace the point of intersection to the X axis and note the value. That's the value of x.

That's all!

If you require further explanation, do let me know.

Let me give you an example ...let's day Mr A is a dealer abd he has placed his car for 4.5m last...Then Mr B who is a middleman or agent now found the car and decided to advertise it . Recall Mr A told him the last price and ask him to add his own cos he is not prepared to settle anyone . Instead of Mr B to load the car with another N500k so that hexane get his cut....he decided to make it an open deal .Open deal means laying all the cards on the table ...he gives you owner last price without his own cut...he now plead with you to settle him with N150k ...Tell me in all honesty if you would prefer to buy that car for N5m or for N4.5m plus N150m?

If you understand this simple explanation you will never have issues with them again . Are you aware that he us risking something as a result of introducing that car to you? If is a stolen car ...he will be arrested and what he will spend at the end will be higher than what your settlement is . Is important you don't focus on there commidion only ...think about the risk too.

In my own case I don't load car...I simply lay the cards on the table ...I will be direct by demanding you settle me with a particular amount ...This wi enable you negotiate directly with car owner. Whatever agreement you reached with car owner doesn't concern my Commision cos if I had to load it ...I will earn more ...

In summary focus on the quality of the ride
Not there settlement . I have in the past renegotiated my commision ...nothing is fixed ...let's say he said 150k ...you can tell him you are ready to pay him 75k ...
You're saying nonsense. Why don't you state the terms and the fact that you will be settled to the buyer before the deal sails through? You're the one that does not understand what the OP is trying to illustrate. Most times, most of these greedy people get from both seller and buyer. If you require to be settled should it sail, say it beforehand.
