A few months to the end of the mandatory National Youth Service, one nagging thought that occupies the minds of most graduates is the thought about JOBS. While some of the females are suddenly conscious of their ticking biological clock and marriage, they also worry about maintaining themselves when the monthly NYSC stipend known commonly as "alawi" stops. In both cases - male or female - their anxiety is genuine. Jobs! Jobs!! Jobs!!! In Nigeria of today, the genuineness of that anxiety is at best more authenticated by the gloomy news of continuous job losses in thousands ; closures of international and local businesses, especially the ones with the capacity for massive absorption of candidates while local small and medium scale businesses are barely surviving the times. Most of them are reportedly cutting down salaries if they decide to retain the services of their few employees instead of outright termination of appointment. It is a sad picture really. It is not even the availability or lack of jobs alone that is threateningly scary, but the ever increasing inflation levels, rising cost of living with food, a basic necessity of life suddenly becoming a luxury in most homes. It is a bad time for all and sundry really, but mainly, to be a fresh graduate in Nigeria in practical terms. A job like I wrote a fortnight ago is simply a task. And anyone could assign himself or herself a task!. But is it that simple? Does defining a need such as a job simply solve the unemployment and economic problems dedeviling this nation today especially for the post NYSC graduate? I wish! But yes, there is a slim or even big chance that defining a need, a situation, or circumstance does give one a better perspective which results in a paradigm shift that hits at the core of a somewhat hidden solution. As I do always, let us take a look at the appropriate dictionary definitions of the word, JOB. According to the English dictionary extract from wikitionary.com, a job is ; 1. A task. Wow! Did you see that? Note that this is the first listed definition of a job before the second; 2. An economic role FOR WHICH A PERSON IS PAID. TASK BEFORE MONEY! So to the one who is full of anxiety for the future, there is no harm in being circumspect a bit really, but can I encourage you to be more TASK conscious? Be conscious of what task you feel the instinctive need to fulfill while packaging it as a worthy, rewarding economic role! In this last statement lies the actual reason you acquired education. To intelligibly package yourself into an economic role that is rewarding! Permit me to quote from the Holy Book. Ecclesiastes 9 vs 10 says; "Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom in the grave where you are going". This means that whatever you have opportunity and ability to do in the duties of your calling, with unwearied diligence, vigour, and expedition (speed, fast, quickly), do it. You know what? Procrastination has stolen a lot from humans, especially during the time of youth. I have been privileged to speak to, train and mentor National Youth corp members through the platform of the scheme's Skills Aquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme and each time my message has remained; "follow your passion NOW not later, even if you have to search for that job!". Oftentimes young people pause their valid dreams or passions for that imaginary 'cool' work/environment that in their eyes or in the eye of their parents, friends, peers, society etc is 'befitting' for their education. Wow! Not a bad idea. But can we not create jobs? What are the probability that you would be among the few who land that dream job? 50:50 chance I guess! If you do nothing but hope, in five years if you look back, what could you have achieved if you did something now? So the ultimate question is; Can you not create and package a task as a worthy, rewarding economic role? Someone who started a mobile waste disposal business in Lagos sometime ago inscribed the statement, " Shit(faeces) business is serious business". Could you imagine such a fine innovation? He was and is still smiling to the bank! A lot of graduates would have shouted, "God forbid, it's not my portion" usual lingua of Nigeria faith crew. But faith without works, it is said, is dead. Employment Is About Task Assignment! Get It Right A business either sells products or services. Oftentimes, people wait for an individual, corporate organisations, or a small business set up by another individual to employ them before they earn a living.. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with that. It is the way of the world system. However, the reality is that what an unemployed person lack is vision /direction. Schooled or unschooled, graduate or uneducated, with or without certificate; what every human being require to survive in this world is a vision/direction towards a specific purpose. 1. That you acquired an education is because you or your parents encouraged you towards that direction pursuant to a purpose - career; and ultimately to earn a living. 2. That you never went further in education, but chose a vocational skill area, for instance trading, is a DIRECTION chosen towards a purpose. The question then is; why do we acquire certificated education and end up idle, unemployed and complaining about a lack of job? The answer lies in the fact that society(or parents) ENCOURAGED/PERSUADED you at the first instance towards a DIRECTION that would lead to a particular purpose. In the second instance, you need to take personal responsibility to drive yourself in a direction towards that same specific life purpose. Those who are lucky to be employed are actually DRIVEN by employers who GIVE them TASKS. The unemployed therefore are looking for a man, woman or organisation to GIVE them a TASK! You wonder why someone in suit, probably given a company branded car would unashamedly market the products and services of that company gleefully to every Tom, Dick and Harry but as soon as he/she is fired, feels hopeless; cannot even sell any personal product gleefully to clients to survive! Why is that? It therefore brings up another set of self evaluating questions; Did your initial chosen DIRECTION prepare you towards fulfilling TASKS that you might find to accomplish? If yes, why are you not DRIVING yourself to fulfill a task that could earn you a living? And if not, why not retool your skill sets towards assigning yourself a task that could be rewarding? These questions and the answers to them could help us define the difference between employers and employees. The truth is that it is not everyone who would build a business entity and assign tasks to others. But if you are not helping another individual, business etc to build, why not start a TASK-Fulfilling business today? CAPITAL One restraining resource that young people often find as an obstacle to starting a venture is capital. But what is capital? Three dictionary definitions of capital as applicable include; a. Already produced durable goods available for use as a factor of production, such as equipment and structures. b. Money and wealth. The means to acquire goods and services. c. Knowledge, awareness; proficiency Most people see liquid cash - money as the only resource known as capital. That, from our definitions above is only partly true. Let me use the illustration of the Cart and the Horse. The Horse represents the man. The Cart represents the capital. The business is the defined task of moving goods to clients in particular destinations whereby you are paid for your services or goods. The Horse must therefore be healthy, knowledgeable about her direction/vision and possess power. The goods to be delivered are carried in the Cart. In this picture, what are the most important parts of the business? The Cart? I don't think so! There's even a saying that you do not put the Cart before the Horse, motion wise I guess. Here's the thing! You actually need the Cart to be effective. But if you focus on your direction/vision and task, the Cart should be the least to worry about and it would surely come if you don't have one at the moment. The Horse needs to know his plan, his routes, his clients, have Horse power, competence, intelligence, ability and skills needed to deliver the goods/services. The goods/services come about through intellectual knowledge and its accurate application. Once that capacity is built, what stops the Horse for instance from strapping the goods to his body for the first and probably second runs to clients? Opportunity meets with preparation! While on the way, perhaps he could meet people with empty Carts or even a wheel-barrow guy says " hey buddy, I could lend you this to your destination" or he could ask to borrow. They place the items in the Barrow-Cart, tie it to the Horse somehow and pronto, he makes delivery giving the man a free Horse ride. Money comes and a Cart is bought! This may sound pretty simplistic but starting small may come with challenges which may be overcome with wise improvisations until one arrives at the promised land. One type of business that I recommend for start-ups are service related businesses where your skill is primarily your product. An example of such service based business is mobile phones repair services. A skilled repair technician has capacity to earn loads of money fixing today's smartphones without investing so much cash capital. Are you still waiting to be lead? To be given a task by someone? Be the leader - lead yourself! You may need to acquire the relevant skills you need through committed learning in books, seminars, workshops or apprenticeships. There is a saying that if you want to hide knowledge from an African, put it in a book! For those interested in technical entrepreneurship knowledge especially in the mobile computing devices category, the book "Mobile Phones and Tablets Repairs : A Complete Guide for Beginners and Professionals " is a must have. You can get it from Amazon marketplace today. In two months of its release, it has sold thousands of copies world wide. It is the first complete book on Mobile Phone repairs.
