CrimeDrunk Naval Officer Accidentally Shoots 3 People In Ikorodu by NAVYdogg(op): 7:44am On Aug 25, 2015
There was pandemonium at Majidun area of Ikorodu yesterday as a Naval personnel allegedly shot 3 people, leaving them in a critical condition.

It was gathered that the incident occurred around 3p.m. at Tipper Park, when the Naval personnel, suspected to have been drunk, allegedly left his duty post to unwind, he visited the park and started playing with his gun, which went off and injured the three persons, who were going about their businesses at the park.

The gunshot caused pandemonium as business activities there were grounded for hours, while the victims were rushed to the hospital.
The victims were said to be in critical condition and were immediately referred to Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH. The suspected naval officer was said to be one of the personnel mounting surveillance in the area to prevent pipeline vandalism.

It was gathered that one of the victims was a tipper driver, while the others were yet to be identified.
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Patricia Amadin, confirmed the report, adding that the suspect had been arrested and was currently being detained at Naval Base, Ikorodu, while investigations into the matter continue.

HealthSierra Leone Releases Last Known Ebola Patient From Hospital by NAVYdogg(op): 7:21am On Aug 25, 2015
Sierra Leone on Monday released its last confirmed Ebola patient from hospital and began a 42-day countdown to being declared free of the virus, a medical source said.

“Today is without doubt a day for celebration and reflection on the thousands of lives lost during this devastating crisis,” said Sean Casey, Regional Director for the International Medical Corps, West Africa Ebola Response.
The world’s worst known Ebola epidemic had raged in West Africa for more than 18 months, infecting more than 28,000 people and killing more than a third of them.

Sierra Leone confirmed its first case in May, 2014 and has since recorded the highest number of cases in the region, although neighbouring Liberia has suffered more fatalities.

Adama Sankoh, 35, responded well to treatment and received her second negative test result on Sunday before her release the following day, which was marked by a ceremony attended by President Ernest Koroma.

Medical staff celebrated and Ebola survivors held up signs of praise to Koroma at the International Medical Corps treatment centre in the city of Makeni.
During the epidemic, it ebbed only to flare back as scientists said sexual transmission was the most likely explanation for the resurgence.

THE government of Switzerland has donated the sum of $8 million (N1.6 billion) to Nigeria and neighbouring countries in the Lake Chad in support of all Boko Haram victims in the North-East sub-region of the country.

The donation was made yesterday when the Charge’d’ Affaires of Swiss Embassy, Daniel Cavegn, paid an official visit to Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State at the Musa Usman Secretariat Complex, Maiduguri.

He said the visit of the Swiss Embassy to the state was to show solidarity with the people and government of Borno State as they are in a difficult situation caused by Boko Haram conflict.

Cavegn, who stated that the $8 million financial donation to Nigeria was specifically in support of the people affected by Boko Haram conflict in the North-East, including the countries around Lake Chad, said: “We are even looking towards increasing this funding, and to also extend the support and also for others to come here with strong presence of international donors on ground.

President Muhammadu Buhari has mandated the ministry of communication to provide details of the recent privatisation of the Nigerian Telecommunications (NITEL) and its mobile arm, MTEL, to ascertain whether or not Nigeria was short-changed.

Speaking to journalists Tuesday after briefing the president on the activities of the ministry of communications, permanent secretary Tunji Olaopa said the president requested that a memo detailing how the transaction was processed be submitted directly to him.

He said Mr. Buhari was concerned about the possibility of Nigeria not receiving a fair value from the deal.

“The president was also concerned about the liquidation of NITEL. He is not opposed to its privatization but he wants to know… and he wants us to bring a memo on how the whole transaction was undertaken so that he would know whether Nigeria was short-changed,” he said.

Mr. Olaopa said the president was very concerned about the whole issue of privatization that is hindering investments in ICT and said “that he will personally champion this”.

“The president talked about the potentials of the ICT sector in generating employment,” Mr. Olaopa said.
He said Mr. Buhari was also concerned about the quality of service from telecom operators in the country.
The privatisation of the NITEL and MTEL was completed in December 2014 after the financial bid was opened in October 2014 by the Goodluck Jonathan administration.

A consortium run by Skye Bank’s chairman, Tunde Ayeni, the founder of Sahara Energy, Tonye Cole, and two other companies, received the nod from the Nigerian government to take over the two companies for $242.3 million (about N42.4 billion).
Their investment vehicle, NATCOM Telecommunications, emerged the sole bidder for the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited, NITEL and Mtel.
NATCOM has as members NATSPACE Telecommunication Investment Limited, PCCW Global Limited, Prime Union Investment Limited, Olutoyi Estate Development & Services Limited, Legal Resources Alliance & Co., Sahara Energy Resources Limited, and LM Ericsson Nigeria Limited.

Of the seven firms, Mr. Ayeni, profiled as a businessman and lawyer on Skye Bank’s website, owns three.
He is the founder and operator of Prime Union Investment Limited, Olutoyi Estate Development & Services Limited, and Legal Resources Alliance & Co. There were suggestions that he has link with NATSPACE, but PREMIUM TIMES could not independently verify that claim.

In December 2014, Mr. Ayeni led NATCOM in its acquisition of NITEL/MTEL less than two months after he also led Skye Bank to buy Mainstreet Bank from Assets Management Company of Nigeria, for N120 billion.

In 2013, Mr. Ayeni was the chief promoter of Integrated Energy Distribution and Marketing Company Limited, a group that eventually bought the Ibadan and Yola electricity Distribution Companies, DISCOs.

Mr. Cole is the owner of Sahara Energy, while LM Ericsson is a subsidiary of Swedish group, Ericsson.
NATCOM, which merges the seven firms, appears to be a new corporate entity created solely for the purchase of NITEL/MTEL. Very little is known about the consortium.
NATCOM emerged winner after NETTAG Consortium, another little known group, was disqualified for failing to attach a $10million bid bond to its bid submission as stipulated in the Request for Proposals (RFP) to prospective bidders.
History of failed sales

Before the acquisition, four previous attempts to sell NITEL failed.
Nigeria started the process of privatising the national telecom groups in 2000 as part of the government’s reform of the telecommunications sector.
In 2001, the government tried to sell 51 per cent equity to Investors International London Limited (IILL) as the strategic core investor.

There was also the failed management contract by Pentascope in 2005, the aborted Orascom Telecoms bid in 2005, and the strategic core investor sale through negotiated sale strategy to Transcorp that was cancelled in 2009.
The last effort was the strategic core investor sale in 2011, where New Generation Communications Limited and Omen International emerged preferred and reserved bidders respectively.

Following the last failed attempt, former Vice President Namadi Sambo-led National Council on Privatisation, adopted the guided liquidation strategy for the sale of NITEL/MTEL.

CareerThe Best And Easiest Ways To Make Money Blogging.... by NAVYdogg(op): 9:39pm On Aug 15, 2015
You want to make money, right? Of course you do. Everyone wants – and needs -to make money. So you started a blog since you’ve heard it’s an easy way to make cash, but you’re not quite sure how to actually make money doing it. Or maybe you already have a blog and you’re exploring ways to monetize it.

No matter which group you’re in, making money with a blog – whether it’s a hobby blog or a business blog is possible. It’s not a get rich quick ordeal, but if you do it right, you could make enough to support your family and more. Let’s dive in and see how you can make a profit with your blog.

=>Monetize with CPC or CPM Ads

One of the most common ways bloggers make money is through placing ads on their site. There are two popular types of ads:

CPC/PPC Ads: Cost per click (also called pay per click) ads are usually banners that you place in your content or sidebar. Each time a reader clicks on the ad, you are paid for that click.

CPM Ads: CPM Ads, or “cost per 1,000 impressions,” are ads that pay you a fixed amount of money based on how many people view your ad.
Perhaps the most popular network for placing these types of ads is Google AdSense. With this program, you do not need to be in direct contact with advertisers; you simply place the banner on your site, Google chooses ads relevant to your content, and your viewers click on the ads. There are countless similar programs available if you find that AdSense doesn’t work for you, such as Chitika, Infolinks, and Media.net.

=>Sell Private Ads

Working with advertising networks isn’t your only option when it comes to selling ads. If you end up with enough traffic, advertisers may come directly to you and ask you to place their ad on your site. You can also contact advertisers yourself. The biggest difference from the above mentioned option is that there is no middle man, which means you can set your own ad rates.

Selling private ads can come in the form of banners, buttons, or links. You can even make money writing sponsored posts where you write about or give a review of an advertiser’s product or service. Another option is to write an underwritten post or series, which is where you can write about any topic, but the advertiser pays for a “Brought to you by” mention in the content.

The ways you make money with this can vary. For instance, you might charge a one-time fee for a link within a post. If you are hosting banner ads, you might charge your partner monthly.

Bonus tip: To maximize your income, you can also choose to sell sponsorship space in your newsletters, podcasts, and videos.

=>Include Affiliate Links in Your Content

Affiliate marketing is also another great tool for monetizing your blog. Here is how affiliate marketing works:

An advertiser has a product she wants to sell. She agrees to give you a commission from each sale if the buyer is coming from your site.
She gives you a unique link that tracks your affiliate code. That way, she knows when a buyer used your link to make a purchase.
You include your affiliate link on your site. You can do this directly in the content or through banner ads. If a reader clicks on your unique link and buys the product you have recommended, you earn a percentage of what she purchased.
You can utilize affiliate marketing through ad networks like Amazon Associates, or you can create private partnerships with advertisers and businesses with an affiliate program.

=>Sell Digital Products

If you would rather not advertise other people’s products on your site, or if you are looking for another stream of income, consider selling digital products. This can include items like:

eBooks
Online courses/workshops
Images, video, or music people can use in their own content
Apps, plugins, or themes
Just remember that if you are going to choose one of these avenues that you make it relevant and useful to your readers. A lot of bloggers make the mistake of assuming they are developing a product their readers need; listen to your readers first, and then create a digital product that will meet their needs.

=>Use it as a Content Marketing Tool for Your Business

It is also possible to sell physical products on your blog and to make money that way. Instead of thinking of it as making money from your blog, however, think of your blog as a content marketing tool that will drive visitors to your business website.

The possibilities are practically endless when it comes to developing a business blog. You could sell hand-made products, books, manufactured products, and so much more. Or you might already have a business and decide to start a blog to convert loyal customers.

Lets say, for example, that you refurbish and resell used smartphones out of your home. You could use a blog to attract visitors to your website where you list your current phones for sale. Your blog might cover topics about DIY refurbishing. On one level, it seems counterintuitive because you want people to buy your phones, but it also helps you build a brand and gain recognition. Social media guru Jay Baer explains the concept on Copyblogger:

I was at a conference a few years ago, and this is where I first sort of started thinking about this concept, and their founder, Robert Johnson, was speaking…

He said, “Well our best customers are the people that think they can fix it themselves.”

But eventually you are going to get out of your depth either on that project on a project down the road, at which point who are you going to call? Are you going to call somebody randomly that you discovered on Google or are you going to call the guys who you just watched their logo in the corner of a 14-minute instructional video?

This concept can also be applied to services in all types of industries. For instance, if you offered electronic repair services as opposed to physical products, you could still use the same blogging concept to increase brand awareness and convert more clients.

=>Sell Memberships

Another option to make money is to sell memberships to exclusive corners of your website. For instance, a career blog might charge $10 per month for users to gain access to their job board. A startup business blog might sell memberships to their forums where people can get personalized advice about their business.

The key here is that your exclusive membership has to be more valuable than something your visitors can find for free somewhere else, so be sure you are developing something of value and worth the price.

=>Use it to Build Your Credibility

Blogging to build credibility can lead to many money-making opportunities. For instance, let us say you start a blog in the finance industry. People start reading your content, and your blog becomes very popular. You are now a recognized figure in the finance industry.

Once you have that authority, people might approach you to co-author a book on debt management, or you could charge to speak at conferences or to run employee financial training days.

This certainly isn’t a direct form of making money blogging, but it has worked for many well-known bloggers, and it can work for you, too. If you are looking for a direct revenue stream, popular blogs have sold for 4-7 figures (sometimes more) by selling their branding and content.

BONUS TIPS

The biggest thing to keep in mind is that making money blogging is not possible by putting your site up and letting it sit there. The “if you build it, they will come” mentality doesn’t work here, so be sure you are willing to put in the time. Most bloggers donate see a spike of income for several months (sometimes years) after starting their blog. Before you dive too deep into blogging, remember these little bits of advice:

Create Quality Content

You are not going to make any money from your blog if people don’t read it. After all, your readers are the ones who are going to make you money, whether they’re clicking on your ads or buying your products. Always put your readers first.

Don’t Spend Your Time Exclusively on Your Blog

Developing a successful blog has a lot to do with building relationships. That can include relationships with sponsors, affiliate partners, or simply other bloggers who will direct traffic to your blog. Be sure some of your time is spent on forums and other blogs (or whatever works for you) to build these relationships and your blog.

Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment

Not all of these tips and avenues of income are going to work for you. Don’t be afraid to tweak your methods to see what works best for you and your readers.

Making money blogging can take a lot of persistence, but it can pay off in the long-run if you’re starting out from scratch. Just remember that you don’t have to use all of these money-making avenues at once. Consider what other people in your industry are doing, and start from there.

Over time, you will learn what works for you and what doesn’t. If you are looking to make money from your blog, which option will you start with?

Joining from Dynamo Kiev for £8 million, Jeremain Lens looks to be a decent signing going forward for Dick Advocaat’s Sunderland. The Dutch attacker has previously worked with the Sunderland boss at both PSV Eindhoven and AZ Alkmaar, so he will more than likely become a regular feature in the starting line-up. Lens has a good goalscoring and assist record and will provide the Black Cats with pace and an extra attacking option that they have lacked in previous campaigns.

9. SERGIO ROMERO
Man United

As a regular for the Argentina national side, Sergio Romero arrives in Manchester as potentially the replacement for David De Gea. The stopper has had a somewhat stranger career, as having made a name for himself at international level, appearing in a World Cup and Copa America final, he’s never really established himself at club level. He earned his first clean sheet at the weekend after the victory over Tottenham.

8. IBRAHIM AFELLAY
Stoke

Stoke will be delighted with the capture of the ex-Barcelona winger in what has been a successful transfer window for Mark Hughes’ side. Afellay will bring a vast amount of experience having had spells at clubs such as PSV Eindhoven, FC Schalke and Olympiakos, as well as Barcleona. Joining on a free transfer, the 29-year-old will give Hughes an extra attacking option and will join up with several familiar faces from his International duty with the Netherlands and his previous spell in Spain.

7. ANDRE AYEW
Swansea

After making 200 appearances for Marseille, Ayew has switched to Swansea City on a four-year deal at the same time his brother Jordan has signed for Aston Villa. The Ghanaian left winger will look to make his mark on the Premier League rather quickly after establishing himself for both club and country. On the opening weekend, he scored on debut against Chelsea and manager Garry Monk will be hoping he can build on his impressive start.

6. GEORGINIO WIJNALDUM
Newcastle

With 80 goals in around 200 appearances, Georginio Wijnaldum comes to Newcastle looking to expand his playing career by making a name for himself in the English top flight. Signing from PSV Eindhoven for a fee of around £14.5 million, there is already a lot of expectation surrounding the Dutch midfielder. Scoring on debut will help settle his nerves and fans will hope that this signing will finally replace the creative spark that has been missing since the departure of Yohan Cabaye.

5. ROBERTO FIRMINO
Liverpool

Whilst his goalscoring record is nothing out of the ordinary, Firmino has shown his potential having made a good impression in the Bundesliga with Hoffenheim. Liverpool have given the 23-year-old a chance to shine in the Premier League and the Brazilian, once returned to full match fitness, will be hoping to buck the trend of South American players underperforming in England. Brendan Rogers has a good record of developing and working with younger players and will be hoping that his new signing, who created the most chances in Germany last term, can provide that much needed flare that his side have missed in previous seasons.

4. DIMITRI PAYET
West Ham

West Ham signed this attacking midfielder from Marseille for an undisclosed eight-figure sum. This seems to be somewhat of a coup for new boss Slaven Bilić, as Payet provided an assist in their incredible opening day victory against Arsenal at the Emirates. Throughout his career, the French midfielder has had an unbelievable assist record and has created 100 goals in just over 300 appearances, and the most in Europe last term. Should he be able to produce the same form in the Premier League, this may just be the creative spark that they lacked when Stewart Downing went off the boil last season.

3. XHERDAN SHAQIRI
Stoke

Having already played in leagues such as La Liga, Serie A and the Raiffeisen Super League, Xherdan Shaqiri is another player that brings a vast amount of experience to Stoke City. Whilst only 23, the Swiss midfielder has scored a hat-trick at a World Cup, has more trophies than most and has played alongside some of the greats. Some may question the rationale of his move to Stoke but that won’t phase Mark Hughes. This is an outstanding signing for City and football fans worldwide will be monitoring his progress.

2. MEMPHIS DEPAY
Man United

At the age of only 21, there is a big expectation being placed on the young Dutchman’s shoulders after his 28 goals last term lit up Dutch football. Not only has he signed for Manchester United from PSV Eindhoven for a figure estimated to be around £25 million but Louis van Gaal has given the winger the famous number 7 shirt. Whilst recent players to wear that shirt have flopped, the Old Trafford faithful will be hoping that the youngster will follow in the footsteps of several greats who have pulled on that shirt; a list which includes George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.

1. BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER
Man United

Bastian Schweinsteiger is already a household name as one of the footballing greats. The German central midfielder made 500 appearances for Bayern Munich, scoring 68 goals, assisting 101 and winning over 20 major honours, including eight Bundesligas. He has been at Munich for 13 years, and has previously worked with van Gaal, but has now decided that it is time to move on. The Germany international has won over 100 caps for his country, is their current captain and was an integral part of the 2014 World Cup winning team. Schweinsteiger, 31, is a fantastic signing for Manchester United and has the potential to set the Premier League alight.

Science/TechnologyWhatsapp & Facebook Already Shaking As Yahoo Introduces Its New Messaging App. by NAVYdogg(op): 8:35pm On Aug 01, 2015
YAHOO has released a new cross-platform messaging app with a bizarre gimmick.

Imagine making a video call without other people being able to listen in.
That's the unbelievable unique selling proposition for a new messaging app from Yahoo.

The US internet firm this week released a new app called Livetext which seeks to make video calling as private as texting.

Yahoo says video calls can be better than texts for expressing emotions, but their audio component makes private conversations public.

With Livetext, you simply message friends by typing – just like texting – but you see video of friends without the audio.

It's the latest example of Yahoo trying to catch up in mobile services since Marissa Mayer became the company's CEO three years ago.

WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Skype and other services already deliver video calls. Yahoo's twist is silencing the audio.

However it's not clear how much – if any – traction this new app will get.
Friends will also need to be using Livetext, and for now, the pool of users is much, much smaller than those with established rivals.

Yahoo says it didn't want to tap its existing network of millions of users, in an effort to keep the Livetext experience more intimate.

To use Livetext, users create a separate ID and make friend requests using the address book in their smartphone.

Following tests in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Ireland, as well as someUS college campuses, the app was released this week on Android and iOS.

Science/TechnologyFacebook Unveils Solar-powered Drone That Can Beam The Internet Down To Earth by NAVYdogg(op): 8:07pm On Aug 01, 2015
Facebook has unveiled a full-scale prototype of its Aquila drone, with which it hopes to deliver internet access in unconnected parts of the world

Facebook has unveiled a full-scale prototype of its Aquila drone – the high-altitude, long-endurance aircraft that the Californian tech giant wants to use to beam internet to people in parts of the world that are not yet connected.

Aquila, which is solar-powered and named after the eagle in Greek mythology that carried Jupiter's thunderbolts, is based on technology developed by Somerset-based company Ascenta, which Facebook bought in March 2014 for an estimated £12.5m.

Ascenta has been absorbed into Facebook's Connectivity Lab, which is working on new aerospace and communications technologies, and also includes experts from Nasa.

"Aquila has the wingspan of a 737 but weighs hundreds of times less, thanks to its unique design and carbon-fiber frame," said Jay Parikh, vice president of global engineering and infrastructure at Facebook, in a blog post.

"When deployed, it will be able to circle a remote region for up to 90 days, beaming connectivity down to people from an altitude of 60,000 to 90,000 feet."
The company has also developed and lab-tested a laser that can deliver data at 10Gbps to a target the size of a five pence piece from more than 10 miles away. Facebook claims this is approximately 10 times faster than the previous state-of-the-art technology in the industry.

"When finished, our laser communications system can be used to connect our aircraft with each other and with the ground, making it possible to create a stratospheric network that can extend to even the remotest regions of the world," said Mr Parikh.

The initiative to deliver connectivity from the skies is part of Facebook's Internet.org partnership with Ericsson, MediaTek, Nokia, Opera, Qualcomm and Samsung, which aims to make internet access available to the two-thirds of the world that are not yet connected.

The first product to come out of the Internet.org partnership last year was a mobile app that allows people in developing countries to access basic web services for free over their mobile network.

However, Facebook has long expressed its intention to help people in remote areas of the world get online, and earlier this year, Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg revealed that the company had been testing scale models of Aquila's solar-powered drones in the UK.

"This effort is important because 10 per cent of the world’s population lives in areas without existing internet infrastructure. To affordably connect everyone, we need to build completely new technologies," said Mr Zuckerberg.

"Using aircraft to connect communities using lasers might seem like science fiction. But science fiction is often just science before its time. Over the coming months, we will test these systems in the real world and continue refining them so we can turn their promise into reality."

Facebook is not the only major technology company hoping to capitalise on the demand for connectivity in developing countries. Google’s Project Loon also aims to create aerial wireless networks using high-altitude balloons placed in the stratosphere at an altitude of 60,000 to 90,000 feet.

Meanwhile, Sir Richard Branson is supporting WorldVu's OneWeb project, which aims to put 648 micro-satellites into low Earth orbit to provide high-speed internet and telephone services, and SpaceX, founded by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, has a similar plan to provide internet access from space.
