Five police officers have been killed and another six injured at a Dallas protest rally against the shooting of two black men by police.Three people have been detained as police continue to exchange fire with one armed man in a multi-storey car park.Gunfire broke out at around 8:45pm local time as demonstrators marched in protest at the deaths of Philando Castile in Minnesota and Alton Sterling in Louisiana.

Dallas Police Chief David Brown said that officers were currently negotiating with a suspect."The suspect that we are negotiating with has told our negotiators that the end is coming and he is going to hurt and kill more of us, meaning law enforcement, and that there are bombs all over the place in this garage and in downtown." he said."We are being very careful in our tactics so that we don't injure or put any of our officers in harm's way, including the citizens of Dallas, as we negotiate further," he added.

Officers believe four suspects coordinated the attack with rifles and positioned themselves in triangulated locations near the end of the route the protesters planned to take.They "planned to injure and kill as many law enforcement officers as they could," Chief Brown said."Some were shot in the back," the chief said. "We believe that these suspects were positioning themselves in a way to triangulate on these officers."One of the march's organisers, Rev Jeff Hood, saw people scramble for cover as gunfire rang out."I ran away from the shots trying to get people off the streets and I was grabbing myself to see if I was shot," he told the Dallas Morning News.
