naijawebe:

Hi NBA,

Happy New-Year to each and everyone of you, and thanks to this wonderful thread started by NBA. You are God sent. After going through all these musings, I am now more interested in buying Nigerian Stocks /Shares. God bless all of you,

A few questions for the experts:
1 It seems everyone picked Vetiva, and the minimum to open an account is 1Million Naira. After the account is opened, how then are stocks bought for you.
2. Do you make the pick of stocks /shares to buy or this is done by you chosen Stockbroker?
3. For someone like me who is a complete novice regarding trading in shares/stocks, it will be very hard and difficult for me to know the upward moving shares/stocks.
4. I would prefer them do this for me
My very important question is how does this work with you "NBA" who has an account with Vetiva and for all others who also have accounts with this firm. I recently bought my first shares last year which of course were First Bank and Access Bank , and I am still waiting for their certificates. This was done through my Older brother in Nigeria. I will honestly prefer to be doing this directly by myself with a good stockbroker. Has anyone received their certificates regarding these Banks? Please fill me in if you have.

So NBA, I need you to educate us please regarding this and more.

Once again, you are a blessing to those of us that are novices when it comes to trading in shares/ stocks. And please let me know if Vetiva does all the buying/selling, and only seek your consent before and after transactions?

Wonderful thread. Guys please keep it up. It is time we start thinking about home. "EAST OR WEST, HOME IS THE BEST"

NBA, if you need my e-mail address for more details let me know

"REMEMBER THAT THE ONLY DUMB QUESTION IS THE ONE YOU WANTED TO ASK BUT DIDN’T"

GOD BLESS.

@naijawebe

You are very welcome to the thread. It is always nice when more people contribute by asking the questions or responding to others.

Some answers to your questions, I am sure others will add more.

A few questions for the experts:
1 It seems everyone picked Vetiva, and the minimum to open an account is 1Million Naira. After the account is opened, how then are stocks bought for you.

With Vetiva, I place my orders on-line with what to buy ir sell and at what price.

2. Do you make the pick of stocks /shares to buy or this is done by you chosen Stockbroker?

You can have an account that is managed where they make all the decisions for you. Vetiva's minimum for this is quite high, used to be 10 Mil, not sure what it is now or if you can negotiate this.
Most folks go with the regular stockbroking account. They make daily stock recommendations and I combine that with research from other sources, most important of them, for me, is the StockMarktet Tips for Nigerians https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-31554.0.html

3. For someone like me who is a complete novice regarding trading in shares/stocks, it will be very hard and difficult for me to know the upward moving shares/stocks.
Go through the link above and others I use include:
http://www.stockmarketnigeria.com/forums/
http://www.proshareng.com/index.php

4. I would prefer them do this for me
You will need a managed account or invest in mutual funds.

My very important question is how does this work with you "NBA" who has an account with Vetiva and for all others who also have accounts with this firm. I recently bought my first shares last year which of course were First Bank and Access Bank , and I am still waiting for their certificates. This was done through my Older brother in Nigeria. I opened my account with Vetiva with the First Bank PO. I completed the PO form and mailed it to them. They credited my request as outsanding shares in my on-line account so I am able to keep track of my PO's this way. I also use their address for all PO's. The First Bank PO's have not been credited to my account to date but the refund was sent to Vetiva and the ammount was credited to my balance. This has been very very convinient for me.

Update on Diamond Bank 5 ******

Sent an email to that a Bank draft be issued to my Stock Brokers. Diamond Reach Account product manager called me on my mobile to inform me there was abetter way; they are able to transfer the funds to the Broker Account in GTB. I sent an email requesting the transfer and providing the details of the GTB account. The next time I logged in about an hour later it had been done. Now is that 5 star customer services or what?

NB: Please note no money has been collected to say this.!!!!!!   grin grin grin

@Etin,
Excellent update, thanks! That is definitely big if they are able to do the third party transfers to other banks. How much does this cost? They called you on your mobile in UK? Wow! I am impressed!

Omoyeni is still WEMA boss –CBN
Posted Sunday, January 20, 2008

The Central Bank of Nigeria has denied speculations that the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Wema Bank Plc, Mr. Adebisi Omoyeni, has been fired.

The Deputy Governor, Financial Sector Surveillance, Mr. Tunde Lemo, said that Omoyeni was neither sacked nor suspended as widely circulated.

The CBN chief, who spoke with our correspondent in Abuja, said that Omoyeni was only on routine leave.

”He is on routine leave and you can quote me. He remains a member of the bank‘s board. No one has asked him to go and I can confirm to you that the bank is healthy,” he said

He also denied that Omoyeni‘s leave was linked to the re-examination of the bank, which was scheduled to commence on Monday by CBN‘s inspectors.

Lemo explained that the bank‘s inspection was a routine matter and that the CBN regularly embarked on house inspections to complement its electronic financial surveillance system (e-fass).

According to him, the CBN insists on comprehensive supervision of banks to ensure the integrity of the banking system.

”In fact, we are getting to a stage where we will have resident inspectors in the big banks,” he added.

The CBN was being expected to make a formal statement on the speculation as at press time.

When contacted, the Head, Corporate Affairs, Wema Bank Plc, Mr. Tunde Olofintila, also denied allegations that his boss had been removed by the CBN.

In a text message to our correspondent, he said Omoyeni was only on an annual vacation.

”Don‘t forget that he has not been on vacation since he became the Group Managing Director in 2005,” he stated.

He, however, declined to pick his calls for further interrogation.

Omoyeni joined Wema Bank in March, 1987 as an assistant manager and has worked in various capacities since then.

He has been Assistant General Manager, Insurance, Pension and Registrar Services; General Manager (Administration); Executive Director, Resource management and Services; and Executive Director, Investment Banking and Public Sector.

He was also Executive Director, Retail Banking until October 4, 2005, when he proceeded on a leave of absence from the bank following his appointment as the Deputy Governor of Ekiti State.

He was appointed MD/CEO of the bank on December 7, 2007.

Wema Bank‘s profit after tax increased substantially from a loss of N6.6bn in 2006 to a profit of N2.5bn in 2007, representing an increase of 138 per cent.

According to the full year result of the bank for the period ended March 31, 2007, turnover increased from N14.83bn in 200 to N24.43bn in 2007.

While speaking at the bank‘s annual general meeting, held in Kano in December 2007, Omoyeni explained that the loss of N6.6bn in 2006, was exceptionally due to a high loan loss provision of N10.26bn.

Deposit liabilities of the bank also increased from N85.6bn to N125.48bn, translating to a seven-year record high growth rate of 47 per cent.

Gross earnings grew by 78.4 per cent, up from N14.8bn in 2006 to N24.63bn in 2007. This had hitherto grown at an average rate of 31.4 per cent yearly between 2001 and 2006.

The bank also disclosed at its last AGM that it would open its hybrid share offer to the public before February 2008, to raise N130bn

The MD said that the bank was going to the market to raise more funds in order to increase its capacity to deliver on its promises to all its stakeholders and customers.

The offer is expected to have a Global Depository Receipt of 40 per cent and a rights issue prospect while the bulk would be reserved for local subscription.

The GDR perspective, according to the MD, is to accommodate both local and foreign stake holding in the bank. - Punch

My commission is now 1%, used to be 1.5% Good luck.
wanaj0:

It is a function of your portfolio size and transaction value. For 'big' clients, you will be offered 1%. It is not for everybody!!!!

easimoni:

So I am big? grin There's a 1st time for everything! grin

Thanks easi, I'll try again.

Wanaj0,
I assume since Zenith does 1% for 5 mil accounts that should be the entry point. Maybe I will tell my broker to transfer 5 mil to Zenith to get their attention.

@easimoni

Do you mind sharing what your reduced commission is - it tried with no luck to renegotiate mine, I want to try again.

Yes you can. The last time I checked, moneygram or western union did not allow on-line transfers to Nigeria, has that changed?

@disguy
I haven't used it much. My transaction pin did not work so they reissued and mailed another which took 2 weeks in all. Afterwards, I moved all my money out for now.

I must say I do like their on-line banking.

(026- 201 002 1676) is the account number for the naira account - i.e. if you are paying in locally in Naija. The one I attached is a US Dollar domiciliary account to receive incoming wires from here.

Na wa for this UBA story O. The NRN reps have been quite good, they may have been put in a difficult situation making them interface with the Stockbroking when there is clearly no need for it. Doesn't excuse bad behavior though.

Anyway, you guys will like Vetiva compared to the stuff I have read here.

NBA has UBA STOCKBROKERS LTD ACCOUNT NUMBER. I think he should post it on this thread so that people can send their money and mandates to them straight.

As per e-mail address, you can send the mail  through
Ubastockbrokers at ubagroup dot com and make sure you copy moradeke.ajayi at ubagroup dot com and charles.egbunonwo at ubagroup dot com.

Peace.

UBA Stockbrokers

Guys,
I was hoping to keep the conversation on the other thread but it doesn't really matter now, boys don vex already!

OK, from what I understand, the NRN folks were instructed to only move money from the current/checking account to the Stockbrokers - the only reason I believe is to make more money for UBA. You do not need to have an account with UBA to use their Stockbroking service.

I contacted UBA Stockbrokers directly and you can transfer the money to their account directly, the email response is attached with the account number. As I mentioned on the other thread, I only use the savings product  most times though I have the current and domiciliary accounts.

My opinion though is deal with the Stockbroking folks directly. The NRN reps don't need to be involved. However with the complain of slow execution mentioned here and lack of on line access , I may not fund that account

If you have complaints, you can send it to this guy. He was in charge of the NRN product a while back.

You are welcome. Let me know how it goes. Use sales at vetiva dot com.

The UBA Stockbroking execution issue is making me have second thoughts about funding the account I just opened though the intention was only to use it for PO's.

I wonder if dealing directly with the Stockbroking unit without going through the NRN RM's solves the issue, anybody know?

@Naijadr,
How you dey? Vetiva is N1 mil. Yes, they set up my account using their address which has worked perfectly for me. They also have a nominee account which means they buy PO's on your behalf without you mailing the forms to them, not sure what else the nominee account features so do ask them about it.

The account setup is pretty straightforward, they emailed the form and I believe I emailed the completed form back. You do not need a Diamond bank account to operate. I wire the money directly to them, it costs $20 from my bank, Bank of America.

I had an account officer but now they use a distribution list sales at vetiva dot com. I don't know why they require the referral thing but I don't think it is such a big deal. A bank can write a note saying you have been a customer for X months or years and that should do it. Otherwise you can email me nse.nba at gmail dot com, but post here so I know to check.
