Okonjo-Iweala Named Top Global Thinker Okonjo-Iweala, Clinton, Stiglitz Named Top Global Thinkers 06 Dec 2011 Ngozi Okonjo Iweala By Paul Ohia The Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has been named one of 100 Global Thinkers by the iconic Washington-based journal, Foreign Policy magazine. Mr. Paul Nwabuikwu, Special Assistant on Communication to the minister, said Okonjo-Iweala was honoured along with a group of distinguished activists, political leaders, diplomats and entrepreneurs from across the world. They are US President Barack Obama, French President Nicholas Sarkozy, British Prime Minister David Cameron, former American President Bill Clinton and Brazilian President Dilma Roussef. Other recipients include US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; Nobel laureates for Economics Joseph Stiglitz and Paul Krugman; and former head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohamed ElBaradei. According to the citation published in the current edition of the journal, Okonjo-Iweala was recognised for her role as a champion of continental economic renaissance who has contributed significantly to putting Africa on the centre stage of global economic focus. It also cited Okonjo-Iweala’s focus on creating jobs and reducing the country’s debt burden, “despite the slump in the global economy and considerable challenges at home, including entrenched corruption and a string of terrorist attacks”. The citation recalled that as Managing Director of the World Bank, Okonjo-Iweala pushed innovative initiatives like “Diaspora Bonds” which allow immigrants in the West to invest in their home countries. Responding to the news of the honour, Okonjo-Iweala dedicated the award to those Nigerian women who “in spite of the many obstacles they face in a very challenging environment are still doing their best to realise the Nigeria of their dreams”. She said that the reference by Foreign Policy to her contributions on job creation is a vindication of the vision of President Goodluck Jonathan to make employment generation the number one economic priority of the country. http://www.nigeriavillagesquare.com/forum/main-square/67041-okonjo-iweala-named-top-global-thinker.html |
Ojukwu: Biafra would have been the toast of Africa – Ogbemudia News Sunday, December 4, 2011 By Taye Obateru & Gabriel Enogholase TWO-time governor of defunct Bendel State, Dr. Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia, has described the late Ikemba Nnewi, Chief Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, as a "gallant nationalist and freedom fighter" who fought for his rights and for the rights of the overwhelming majority of his Igbo people. advertisement In reminiscence of their days in the Nigeria Army and the events that led to the civil war, Ogbemudia said Ojukwu "was always a visionary, forth-right, courageous, outspoken, nationalist and patriotic". According to him,"Ojukwu wanted to see a Nigerian nation where all ethnic nationalities are recognized and fairly treated, not a country of disparate and desperate ethnic groups. He threw all that was left of his physical and mental energy into this enterprise but did not live to see it through". He went on in his condolence message, "Although it is a universal saying that you don't say evil about the dead, in the case of Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, the Ikemba Nnewi, there is truly no evil to talk about his life. Many say he was a rebel. No, he was a gallant nationalist and freedom fighter. He openly disagreed on issues and rather than stomach his dissatisfaction, he fought for his rights and for the rights of the overwhelming majority of his Ibo people who looked up to him. "Imagine that he succeeded, and Biafra had become a state, going by the feats they achieved at a very difficult time, Biafra would have become the toast of Africa by now. Perhaps many other new states would have been born. "I was a major and later a brigade major when he was a Lt Col. commanding a battalion at Kano. We were all under the command of Kaduna 1st Brigade. Following the coup of January 15, 1966, he was appointed Military Governor of Eastern Region, David Ejoor for the Midwest, Adeyinka Adebayo for the West and Usman Hassan Katsina for the North. The crisis ensued as the North had good reasons to believe that the coup was targeted against them. Many Ibos in the North were killed in a reprisal manner. Gen Ironsi the Head of State was also killed. "By 1967, the crisis had worsened and Ojukwu declared Biafra. He invaded the Midwest. Same year i was appointed Military Governor of the Midwest. We fought against Biafra Army and liberated the Midwest. Midwest sacrificed human and material resources to save Nigeria. The Head of State at this time was Gen. Gowon. He appreciated this and remarked that but for Midwest, there would have been no Nigeria. "That notwithstanding, my admiration for Ojukwu remained high. I contributed all I could to the rehabilitation of the east. "My friendship with Chief Ojukwu effectively resumed when he returned from exile. I helped with his political reintegration and was sorry that he wasn't allowed to go to the Senate in 1983. He was always visionary, forth-right, courageous, outspoken, nationalistic and patriotic. Meanwhile, an Igbo socio-cultural organization, Izu Umunna, has urged the Senate to reverse its decision which opposed a state burial for Chief Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, in the interest of justice and fair play. |
alj_harem:I praised him for saying the truth and chided him for talking poo. That is me. I am not a one-track nama like some of you. |
The remaining article was poo, typical of an illiterate malu-rearing northerner. Like asking what an oxford (Ojukwu) graduate was looking for in the army? Can I ask what an illiterate almajiri was doing in the army? Who is best fit to lead the army: an illiterate or literate person? |
A former Chief of Defence Staff, Lt.-Gen. Domkat Bali, in this interview with JUDE OWUAMANAM, says his suspicion of the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, when he abandoned a lucrative job as an Oxford graduate, to join the army, was vindicated when he led a rebellion against the Federal Government Lt.-Gen. Domkat Bali Sir, I know that by now, you are aware of the death of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu. As your former comrade in the military, how did you receive the news? Yes, I am fully aware. It is regrettable like all deaths. Whether you like him or not, Ojukwu has made an impact in this country. It was because of him substantially that we ended up having the civil war. So, he was an important Nigerian, who has made historic impact in the life of this nation, especially in Igbo land. I have often told anybody I met that as far as I am concern, the greatest black man from Africa was the late Chief Nnamdi Azikiwe, an Igbo man. But most Igbo people say Ojukwu is the greatest, and so, the Igbo gave Ojukwu all the honour, not Zik. I asked them why they honour Ojukwu more than Zik, they said Zik served the Nigerian nation but Ojukwu served the Igbo nation. http://www.nigeriavillagesquare.com/forum/main-square/66997-i-always-suspicious-ojukwu-army-gen-bali.html |
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=gHphszkawoU This con man does not sound Nigerian for a # of reasons: 1. His accent -(sounds Ghananian) 2. His Name -sounds GHANANIAN (watch section at 3.06 min) 3. A search with that name, AMOAKO, yields GHANANIAN connections Yet he is labelled in the video as Nigerian, although it appears he has Nigerian partners. Or has the name been mispelled by the ever ''ignorant'', yet over sabi Oyibo press? So is he Nigerian or ''Nigerian''? |
Onlytruth:To think he was even insisting that a Yoruba took over from Ironsi, and that one, typical of Yorubas, checked out to the UK much like Abiola. |
Aigbofa:Taa! He (AWO) committed suicide, hence no international news magazine made his obituary. In Igboland he would have been thrown into the evil forest. |
EzeUche:They will be happy if Igbos claim Awo as a father (Tufiakwa). Ewu Aigbofa. At this point they should begin to commit suicide like Awolowo. Now I know why The Economist, NYT etc, had no obituary news about Awo: he indeed committed suicide ![]() |
Aigbofa:From the abundance of experience, the only way to draw you out is to say Awolowo was an ignorant goat. Now hit your buttons with the expected response. Ewu Yoruba. |

Deny this too 5 Igbo traders abducted in Owo Sunday Kudaisi, Akure Kidnapping which is fast becoming a way of life in the riverine oil producing areas of Ondo State, at the weekend, spread to the ancient city of Owo, as suspected armed youths abducted five Igbo traders. The victims who were alleged to have been kidnapped on September 6 were released at the weekend after an undisclosed huge ransom was allegedly paid by the Owo Igbo community. Those kidnapped included Messrs Okechukwu Okafor, Mike, Chigozie Nwanekezi and Monday Agboh. Chairman of the Igbo community in Owo Mr Eze Chidozie, said several Igbos operating in the town had closed down business, adding that they will not open for business until government security agents assure them that their lives are safe. The kidnappers allegedly consented to release of the abducted people after the intervention of Olowo of Owo, Oba Olateru Olagbegi, the Ojomoluda of Ijebu Owo, Oba……Ojomo and some notable Owo chieftains. The Igbo community in Owo, who however protested to the State police commissioner, Charles Dawodu, after the release of their kinsmen, narrated how the militant youths alleged to be palace boys, Eyin Ogbe boys and Iloro youths made life unbearable for the Igbo people living in Owo kingdom. Chidozie told journalists in Akure that the militant youths had in the last one year, kidnapped 16 Igbo people and demanded huge sums of money which they paid. He said: "They just enter our stores carry our goods and ask us to pay certain amount of money before they will release the items and any attempt to argue with them, they will just bundled that person and take him to their cell. "Thereafter, they will be demanding for money ranging from N100, 000 and above and they will not release the victim until their demand is met." The Igbo community also alleged that the ugly development had lead to the death of two traders, saying the militants have turned it to be their rights to be entering shops operated by the Igbo traders and threatening to kill or maim them if they (the Igbo traders) don’t meet their demands. The target of the militants is especially those that are into timber business, electronics, medicines and motor spare parts. The intimidation and harassment he said have been reported to the Olowo and Ojomoluda but that the looting spree of Igbo shops with impunity have not been stopped. The chairman appealed to the state police commissioner to rescue the Igbo from the hands of the militants who had turned kidnapping and looting of Igbo store to source of their daily income. Chiedozie noted that such actions will strain the cordial relationship between the Owo people and the Igbo traders in the town. Adding that all Igbo people in Ondo State would today (Monday) storm Owo and join their kinsmen on a peace protest against the activities of the militants. Confirming the incident, the state Mr. Dawodu said the victims of the alleged kidnapped never reported the cases to the police. Daudu said the victims had been keeping the information to themselves, noting that now that it’s getting out of their hands that they took the appropriate step of reporting to the police. The police boss assured the people that the criminal incident would not recur, saying he had contacted the monarch of the ancient city and other prominent traditional chiefs to stamp out the heinous activities of the illegal militant youths. |

Alleged Kidnappers Docked Abibatu Sanusi, 39, and Aibano Ayotunde, 49, were on Friday arraigned before a Yaba Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, over alleged unlawful confining and depriving the liberty of one Blessing Ukeh. The Prosecutor, Mr. James Okorie, told the court that the accused persons sometime in May, 2011, at Ayoredex Medical Centre, 66, Boladale St., conspired to confine 18-year old Ukeh by locking her up. PointB:My response was appropriate to the post I responded to. Please go back and read that post and mine in context. Thanks. Moreover, those southerners in Jos have a place to run to, unlike the natives. It is not by force to live in Jos, yes? |
X-mind:Duh!!! I am completely ignorant of the Nigerian issue. So please educate me. Thanks. As for the laughter, I guess it is still my right to laff, especially after a good night's sleep. |
emmke:What a logic. So it is about kill me, I kill you? In any case, there are 40 million +/- Hausa Fulani and there are 1 million +/- Beroms. Let's see whose population gets wiped out at the end of the slow but steady killings going one. Shame on Gowon under whose watch his people are being decimated by the same masters he served. In the end, the hausa/fulani will likely win the Jos war because it is a matter of number. Fortunately for them, you are not more sophisticated than they are in terms of weaponry and bombs. I dey laugh ohh!! |

Why we can’t tax Osun people, by Aregbesola By Adesoji Adeniyi 21 hours 46 minutes ago Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font Rauf Aregbesola Rauf Aregbesola Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola at the weekend explained why his administration has refused to tax the people. Aregbesola said his people are very poor and tax would be an unnecessary burden on them. He spoke at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Osogbo, the state capital, during a dinner with representatives of various financial institutions. The dinner was part of activities marking the one year anniversary of the Aregbesola administration in office. The governor urged the institutions to assist in eradicating poverty in the state, assuring them of security and a business friendly environment. He solicited for funds to finance capital projects and programmes that would improve the state’s economy. Aregbesola said: “I am in Osun State to eradicate poverty. If you are talking about Unclad poverty, it is here in the state. We can not tax anybody here because we do not want them to die. “Are we going to tax people waiting to die? We were able to save 13 million in the last year, not through tax, but by blocking leakages in the system. So you bankers have no choice than to help us deliver good governance to the people. We need your support to eradicate poverty. “I am amused about the uninformed comments of our predecessor in office about the finances of the state. They are confused and cannot comprehend what we are doing because they are not financially literate. “We have the vision, passion and action. I am here to change the fate of the black man through the various programmes and projects of our unusual and unconventional government. “My predecessor left the state’s account in a bad state. We met a suffocating loan of N18.3 billion, which the Olagunsoye Oyinlola administration secured in an unprofessional manner. “But within a year in office, my administration was able to increase the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the state from N300 million to N600 million and pay the loan through the access of N25 million bond from the bank, with the monthly servicing of less than N100 million, instead of the N800 million used to service the former loan.” The governor said his administration does not wait for the federal allocation before it pays its workers, adding that any state waiting for it is doomed. He said states rejected the October allocation because of President Goodluck Jonathan’s decision to deduct some amount from it for the creation of Sovereign Wealth. Aregbesola said nobody has the right to deduct from any state’s allocation without the governor’s consent. He advised state governments to exploit other avenues for generating revenue. Commissioner for Finance, Economic Planning and Budgeting, Dr. wale Bolorunduro said the government plans to increase the IGR to N1 billion next year. On incessant bank robberies in the state, Bolorunduro said the government has collaborated with security agencies to forestall a recurrence. He said the governor has ordered for five Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and established a security trust fund to combat the menace. Many of the bank executives acknowledged the governor’s passion for development and promised to support his administration. They include: Ayo Abina, Skye Bank; Elias Akenzua, Zenith Bank; Akinleye Ogunleye, Diamond Bank; and Boyin Oladokun, Unity Bank. http://www.thenationonlineng.net/2011/index.php/news/27811-why-we-can%E2%80%99t-tax-osun-people%2C-by-aregbesola.html |
