PoliticsRe: We Don't Hate Anyone, We Just Love Our Land More by Nchara: 5:50pm On Feb 11, 2012
1. Igbos love their land too. That is why they cry for Biafra
2. Yorubas are living in Igboland, asking for free land and even accusing the govt of ethnic motives when the govt wants to use Igbo land for development (these topics are all here on NL)
3. Igbos buy land in Lagos and do not ask for free land in Yorubaland. Yet, Yoruba govts destroy Igbo shops at will and the ever present Yoruba agberos extort Igbo specifically.
4. Yoruba land is less safe for Igbos than Igboland is for Yoruba. 10s of Igbos have been kidnapped and killed by Yorubas (also posted here on NL). No Yoruba has been treated that way in the East
5. Today we hear from rabid ethnicists that Igbos are the targets of Northerners, tomorrow they say all other Nigerians are also killed not only Igbos. There are many flip floppers around here, people.
6. Igbos are killed, as are Yorubas and other Nigerians in the North. Lets stop living in denial.
7. Yoruba land does not sustain Igbos more than Igboland sustains the Yorubas living there.

Boko Haram: Massob evacuates 156 Igbo from Kano

Chief Raph Uwazuruike Chief Raph Uwazuruike

Leader of the Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Raph Uwazuruike, yesterday evacuated 156 Igbo sons and daughters from Kano State.

The MASSOB leader sent three Ezenwata transport buses to bring Ndigbo back from the North. They arrived at about 5.30 a.m yesterday.

As early as 7am, some of the returnees from both Imo and Abia states were seen being taken to their destinations.

The National Director, Information and Communications of the MASSOB, Uchenna Madu, told The Nation yesterday that Boko-Haram sect is a conspiracy by the Northern region against President Goodluck Jonathan’s administartion.

He said Ndigbo in the North had been directed by the MASSOB to come back home to their region, adding that the essence of sending vehicles to them was to save their lives first, before their property.

According to Madu, “we are still articulating and counting our loses on what happened at Onitsha on Thursday and when the time comes, MASSOB would react”.

There was angry protest in Onitsha on Thursday following the killing of an Igbo lorry driver by a policeman  over N20. The residents of the commercial city including MASSOB members were among those who embarked on the protest, which forced the northerners to relocate to near by Asaba, capital of Delta state.

Though, normalcy has returned to the commercial city of Onitsha, where the state commissioner of Police, Muhtari Ibrahim and some senior members of his command had relocated since the incident, one could still feel the tension in the air.

However, Anambra state Deputy Governor, Emeka Sibeudu has equally visited the commercial city of Onitsha where he addressed the residents and enjoined them to remain calm.

He said that the state government in conjunction with  security agencies would make sure that such a situation doesn’t repeat itself again.

There was panic among the Hausa group yesterday in Awka and Nnewi respectively as they fear for any reprisal attack.

One of them who just mentioned his name as Aminu told The Nation that if he had his way, he would slaughter all the so called members of the Boko-Haram sect who he said had been causing confusion in the land.

He said that the people have made them to continue to live in fear in an environment they have lived in for the past 30 years and prayed Allah to clip the wings of the so called sect members.

Varsity lecturers weep over burnt property

by Akinwale Aboluwade, Ibadan

Some lecturers of Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo in Oyo State, on Monday wept uncontrollably as the school authorities went round the university to assess the level of damage during a students' protest.

Some aggrieved students of the university went on the rampage on Sunday to protest against the death of a 300-level Computer Science student, Elvis Paul, said to have died while receiving treatment at the school's health centre earlier on Sunday.

The students, who argued that the 22-year-old died as a result of the delay in attending to him by the health centre officials, reportedly set the Accounting and Economics departments ablaze.

They also allegedly vandalised the health centre and a blue Mercedes Benz 200 belonging to a lecturer.

Some lecturers of the university, who were affected by the arson, were seen crying. A lecturer in the Management Information and Systems Management Department, Dr. Olajide Ogunsola, said some of the lecturers in the department lost vital documents to the fire.

"The department was burnt down with our labour therein. Imagine all the books and research works of 40 years have been burnt. All my books have been burnt," Ogunsola said.

Other lecturers, who did not give their names, said it was difficult for them to estimate the cost of the items that they lost to the fire.

Describing the situation as unfortunate, Ogunsola said it was disappointing that the students went as far as destroying school's and lecturers' property. With this, he said, the students compounded their woes.

It was learnt that Paul had been recently reprimanded by the disciplinary committee of the university. However, some students, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said the deceased was loved by co-students because he was very intelligent.

The deceased, who allegedly got drunk at a night party on Saturday, went to the health centre for treatment as a result of severe headache. According to an official of the health centre, the deceased died of food poisoning.

However, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Timothy Jaiyeoba, could not be reached

Alj-harem,

You miss the whole point, what has revenue generation got to do with contribution to economy?  shocked shocked shocked Although I don acknowledge that IGR is directly related to economic fiscal policies such as taxes etc, but that does not answer the question of what contributes to the economy. Rather than arguing on false rumors, my advice is to take a look at

1. What contributes to the growth and development of Nigerian economy (or GDP)?

2. What are their components and sub-components and how do they measure up across regions?

A lot of you guys call oil, oil contributes about 14% to our economy (third), Retail trade contributes about 19% to our economy (second), while Agriculture contributes about 43% (First) to our economy. Having seen that about 73% of our economy comes from these, I was expecting someone to explain further how these components attribute to each region and their contribution.

This is one of the reasons why I like to stay away from topics like this because it's hard explaining certain things for some folks
Precisely

IGR generated and used by individual states has nothing to do with the Nigerian economy as states do not contribute their IGR to the national coffers
In terms of national IGR (with the exception of oil) Igbos are on top because we are, more than others, involved in importation for which custom duties are the second generator of income after oil
Some debunkers on reliance on IGR:

1. Some governors dont declare all they get as IGR
2. Some Nigerians who can afford to pay taxes often manipulate the system because they are self employed and can afford to hide around without having their tax money deducted from an organized employer
3. Some state revenue officials have duplicate receipts that they issue to tax payers and so pocket any tax money receipted with such fake receipts. This affects the true IGR declared by such states
I can go on and on to debunk the myth of IGR as it affects Nigeria--------a thoroughly corrupt country.
PoliticsRe: What Does The Ss/se Contribute To Nigeria? by Nchara: 3:13pm On Feb 04, 2012
reporter?:
Your point is baseless.  The question is about regions. The largest employer aside of FG in Nigeria is Dangote, an Hausa, base in SW. The large chunk of industries in Lagos are owned by Yoruba with mixture of others. The bottom line is that SW produces more than any region in Nigeria period. SE is the least despite what you might want us to believe.

People by nature gravitate to where economic opportunities abound. The trend in Nigeria is obvious. As I type, SW is welcoming another economic refugee from SE.
It's all good. We accept all comers without malice.
It is not simply about regions. It is about who owns what in any region. Otherwise, you will have to explain why the average Yoruba even in their own land is by far poorer than Igbos in Yorubaland. Dangote cannot employ more people than the oil industry. Neither can you discount the millions of Igbos who are gainfully self employed all over Nigeria and paying their taxes wherever they live. That fact of self employment again explains why poverty is least among the Igbos. SE is the least in what? Can you make yourself clear? If you mean state IGR, what has that got to do with the contrubution to the nation? Is IGR generated in Oyo sent to Abuja as a contribution to the federal purse by Oyo? Your point is completely forlorn. If people gravitate to whareva you claim, what are Yorubas doing in the East (SS and PH). Do you know the thousand of Yorubas working in the oil companies outside Yorubaland and those driving taxis and selling agbo and mamput in Igboland? What are they doing in those places if their land is rosy? Most Igbos in SW and North go there not because it is rosy (otherwise we would see the rosiness in the indigenes). They go there to exploit their talent in one or two things. Note that average Igbos in Igbo land are also doing better than average SWners. All the facts are here on NL.

I repeat, only about 10% of companies in Lagos are owned by Yorubas.  The rest are by Igbos. The few rich Yorubas grab everything leaving the prependerance of their people in the lurch. The bulk of companies in Lagos are owned by other Nigerians and foreigners (multinationals). All the companies in Agbara are multinationals and many of them also have branches in the East. That is why most Yorubas are poor. 95% of teh wealth in Igboland is Igbo-owned. Only about 40% of the wealth in Yorubaland is Yoruba owned. Igbos owne a good cunk of the ewalth in Lagos. Go figure

What does the SW contribute to Nigeria?
Can you define IGR? Can you differentiate federal IGR from state IGR? Does IGR generated in Ondo get sent to Abuja? If not, what has state IGR got to do with contribution to Nigeria?
How do SW states (minus Igbo people in those states) generate more revenue for the country than SE states?
Do you care to know that some of the IGR in SW states come from Igbos there?

I am sure you do not believe your own garbage.  SW is the only region in Nigeria that has any viable industries left.  Lagos alone accounts for almost 70 percent of industries in Nigeria.
Sango-Ota and Abgara estate in Ogun state have more industries than the entire SE region!  If you care, please list the major industries by name in SE and let's compare with Ogun alone. I mean functional corps and not some mom and pop crap.  I forgot, all the industries in Lagos and Ogun are owned by Ibos.
80% of the industries in Lagos are not owned by Yorubas
Of those not owned by Yorubas, many are owned by Igbos. I cant even begin to list them
You lie about industry viability elsewhere. You need to visit Nnewi and parts of Enugu and Abia.
Agbara Industrial estate contains 100% multinationals not owned by Yorubas and branches of those companies such as PZ, Nestle, etc are also in Aba
In fact the biggest brewery in Africa is in Enugu state, yet the h/q of the parent company  (NBL) is in Lagos

The question is how many Nigerian companies are owned by Igbos versus Yoruba?

No body should even talk about SS here. We have contributed a lot to this country. From Oil, to our farm lands as sacrifice during oil spills, to Rubber, to Cocoa (Edo state) to Timber (Sapele), Oil palm (Rivers and co) etc.  Vanguard newspaper is owned by an Itsekiri man, not to talk of Alex Ibru and guardian newspaper. We have tried!

The SE are also up there. The have oil (but produce less on a daily bases than the other oil producing states), from Achebe to Nnamdi, to Coal in Enugu and Onisha market. From, yellow garri (garri mixed with palm oil) to Yam! Also, they, the SE, are the reason why Nigeria is still one because they travel everywhere. The average SSouthern, Swesterner and Northerner do not leave their states or region.

Think about this, without Ndigbo, Nigeria would be stale! Its a privilege to have them in our country! Same goes for SSoutherners, Yorubas, some Northerners! cool
List the 9 or so oil-producing states and show their daily production
Do Cross River and Edo produce more than Imo or Abia?

@manny for life

1. Apart from South-south, the South-west has the highest IGR for Nigeria miuns Lagos and followed by the SW

2. Cocoa is the second highest foreign ezchange earner in Nigeria while rubber is third and the fourth is palm oil of which are all produced in the SW region and cowpea/soyabean are firth are produced in the north

The agricultural products of Nigeria can be divided into two main groups: food crops, produced for home consumption, and export products. Prior to the civil war, the country was self-sufficient in food, but imports of food increased substantially after 1973. Bread, made primarily from US wheat, replaced domestic crops as the cheapest staple food for much of the urban population. The most important food crops are yams and manioc (cassava) in the south and sorghum (Guinea corn) and millet in the north. In 1999, production of yams was 25.1 million tons (67% of world production); manioc, 33.1 million tons (highest in the world and 20% of global production); cocoyams (taro), 3.3 million tons; and sweet potatoes, 1,560,000 tons. The 1999 production estimates for major crops were as follows (in thousands of tons): sorghum, 8,443; millet, 5,457; corn, 5,777; rice, 3,399; peanuts, 2,783; palm oil, 842; sugar cane, 675; palm kernel, 565; soybeans, 405; and cotton lint, 57. Many fruits and vegetables are also grown by Nigerian farmers.

Although cocoa is the leading non-oil foreign exchange earner grown in the southwest, growth in the sector has been slow since the abolition of the Nigerian Cocoa Board. The dominance of smallholders in the cocoa sector and the lack of farm labor due to urbanization holds back production. Nigeria has the potential to produce over 300,000 tons of cocoa beans per year, but production only amounted to 145,000 tons in 1999. Rubber is the second-largest non-oil foreign exchange earner. Despite favorable prices, production has fallen from 155,000 tons in 1991 to 90,000 tons in 1999. Low yield, aging trees, and lack of proper equipment have inhibited production.

Most of the palm oil you eat in Nigeria (North and Lagos) comes from states such as Imo, Abia, Anambra and the SS states (minus Bayelsa)
