@Nchara slightly?

lmao. See thier MW of electricty coming in? I just posted the figure. 70% naija under poverty 17% in Indonesia no comparison. Their economy is more diversified than ours as well. Better airports. Infrastructure etc etc.
Yes they have better infrastructure but poverty is biting there as in Nigeria. I like to gauge these things by what people on the ground say.
Our lack of infrastructure is not due to poverty but due to corruption and inefficiency
PoliticsRe: Indonesia Naijas Elder Brother by Nchara: 6:39am On Dec 18, 2011
They are just slightly better off than us but we are in the same general level of poverty

How many of those 232 M or so people live above poverty level in REALITY?

My students told me Indonesians export the good products and the citizens mostly eat the bad, spoiled ones due to poverty
I'd rather go by that first-hand knowledge than what some govt data says.

Which two of those criteria do those "Cities" you listed in Wyoming meet?
This is about Nigeria, though

But those cities will meet at least:

1. Overall relative development (buildings and types of thereof, hospitals, roads, transport system, living standards, etc).
2. Significant industrial/commercial/service base in sync with their population strength. The mining and ecotourism industries in Laramie WY (for e.g.) will cover a significant swathe of the population.

The whole of WY, ND, SD is full of large, medium or small scale mining industries including crude oil in some of them. With those come banks and hotels.

I agree some US cities are too small in pop to be true cities

But the thread says one-city states in Nigeria. All US states have more than one full-fledged city by any standard.

But funny enough every town of some name recognition in Nigeria is described as a city
Even Afikpo, Ijebu Ode, etc are referred to as cities. I guess anything goes in Nigeria

What are the things that make a city?

That is the most important question.

And those States I mentioned tell me 5 cities in them and what economic/Industrial activities goes on in them

Per Wikipedia, Newark has a Population of 35,000 , Dover 40,000

I mean a city of 30,000 people is just like 2 Bus stops in Ikorodu ( I know you lived in Ikorodu and you would be familiar with it)
In Nigeria, the criteria will easily be:

Population
Significant administrative presence (state capitals)
Significant Industrial base
Significant business/commercial base
[s]Land mass (a warped criterion but typical of Nigeria)[/s]
Overall relative development (buildings and types of thereof, hospitals, roads, transport system, living standards, etc).

At least two or three of these should play out, IMO

Most towns in Nigeria have populations of 100+, so that cancels out.
University presence will not make a city, otherwise places like Umudike, Otta, Ago Iwoye, Ekpoma, Nsukka etc will also be cities.
PoliticsRe: Why Are Nigerian States Mostly One-city States? by Nchara(op): 5:02am On Dec 18, 2011
Wyoming cities and their pop as per wiki. Now you can see that pop alone does not make a city. Otherwise all Nigerian towns will be cities.

Population is a major point when categorizing cities

Ogbomoso doesnt rank side by side with Ibadan but it is beyond a town going by Nigerian standard

What are the names of the 2nd cities in those States I listed and what criteria makes them cities?

In Idaho for instance only Boise has a population over 100k, Same with North Dakota, Arkansas, Rhodes Island,  Missisipi, South Dakota etc

In States like Wyoming, Delaware Maine etc,  NO single city above 100k and only 1 or 2 above 50k. In Oyo State at least we have 10 towns with over 100k ppl.
Pop is just only one of many factors. What other indices classify Ogbomosho as a city other than its population? To begin with can you mention one industry in Ogbomosho? What is the overall state of devpt?

When i send goods to Nigeria, after i cleared my container from Lagos port i take it straight to oladikpo, pay for space to off load my goods, there is one boy from enugu state call nnamdi, he was the one that market my goods for me i stand their with him and watch how he sold the goods and what he makes on each kits is almost the same profit i was making and i am the importer, everthing went well and other traders were telling me what to buy for next consignment,  what i did was i meet some big top shooters in the market they gave me list of what they sell and how much they will buy from me.

When i went back to abroad i did more resarch on the products,i end up purchasing those products the traders want,as am buying it am calling them to tell them what am purchasing for them and i bumped up the price and for my surprise they agree on the price.

When my goods arrived my boy nnamdi wasn't happy cos the product is not his line and i said to him look is business, i didn't travel to abroad to purchase these goods for you,we are not in business partner.I then asked him how many times i called you from oversea and ask you about some product for you to simple do resarch for me end of the day you are the one that will sell it,but you never gave me a positive answer.

I then travel to onicha meet one of my old friend he runs a big merchandise, i told him what am selling and all that, and the price  i was shocked cos it-was like extra 50% profit margin from Lagos guys, i now switch to him, for my surprise when my next consignment came to Nigeria i invited him to Lagos as i was off loading those marketers were coming one by one pricing my goods i ignored eveyrboby finish off loading, then i called those top shooters in oladikpo and i ask them what are you paying for this item? they will tell me their price and my man was sitting their quietly and i ask him his own price his price is like 50 percent profit extra from what the oladikpo guys were pricing.

Then i turn to oladikpo guys and tell them look this other guy is taking the whole thing, they were angry one of them then asked me, were is these guy from?i said onitsha they all kept quiet.

since then, fot the past 2yrs my consignment goes straight to onitsha cool

I disagree about your classification, Ogbomosho deserves to be ranked higher than what you give it.

Also it happens in the US too.

How many Cities do you know in Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming, South Dakota, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Connecticut, Maine, Rhodes island, Delaware, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Vermont etc?
How does Ogbomosho rank against Ibadan?
The only way Ogbomosho will be ranked as a city is on the basis of population. It falls flat on other considerations

Even the most outlandish US states namely the Dakotas and Wyoming  have by far more than one city by american standard. They are of course not popular like LA, SF Houston and all that.

How has Chinua/Chike Obi/etc contributed to the devpt of Anambra specifically?
Like I said, all your intellectuals have left the house open for Omata traders to take over, hence Anambra's under-achieving status

The only thing that has change over the years are the states and LGAs that "border" them. Just like east central state which was broken up into 5 states or Rivers which was broken up into 2 states. Those divisions caused the one-city states you see today, that are economical inviable.
Very true.
But for state creation Owerri, Aba and Umuahia would have been in one state. Same for Calabar, Uyo and Ikot Ekpene and other states.

Yet, states like Rivers will still have only PH, for Yenagoa is still nowhere near a city status even by Nigerian standard.

you make me laugh. nigeria govt contributed to that  airport. And there was a reason why nigeria govt refused to built that airport.  the reason is that within an area of less than  40,000 km, there will be 5 airport.  who is going to use them ,

and mr , it is not the duty of the people to built thing. it is the duty of the govt.

And i think you are not nigerian. In nigeria, the govt operate unitary system of govt and not federalism as in the constitution.

The govt of Nigeria collect revenue or taxes for everything. even the air. the state are not allowed to collect what belong to them. Because the people who setting up this law, set it up because of ethnic hate.  Nigeria had dictators in power.  so nigeria laws were set up to perform ethnic hate

That why when ban kim moon made a mistake to go to nigeria. the people felt Ban kim moon was supporting this injustice and they bomb up the UN  office.   Because there is injustice in nigeria.

This is why I have said over and over again remove Edo, delta and Yorubas,  And the united nation have no choice. at least ban kim moon can see what they can do.
How else can I help you since you cannot help yourself to help yourself? Your people have ruled Nigeria in recent times. They should have helped you then. Bye bye, and try to help yourself sometimes, for heaven (Nigerian govts) help only those who help themselves.

Why not mention any SE and SS (except Benin) ancient (pre-colonial) city/town that you know of in history instead of the useless rants? Where are the earliest SE settlements today?

I don't see Biafra in everything  olodo, I used it to qualify an attitude I see on NL from Biafra cryers.
Igbos never lived in large cohesive communities like the Yoruba and the North, hence you hardly find any known Igbo town city before the coming of the colonialists. One reason you should learn other people's history in addition to yours. The earliest Igbo settlements are still there as villages. Most, if not all,  SE cities/towns are not more than 100 + years old.

- Planned buildings and road networks

- Managed by a 'mayor' and not an LG chairman

- government-aided commerce

- Seperate budget from other LGA's

- Population density over 50% more than atleast 33% of the state combined

- In ancient English times, a city must contain a cathedral.
like I said, there is no single definition. In Nigeria, local political influence (in relation to neighbouring towns), population size, business development (banks, industries, standard shopping centers etc), schools at all levels, hospitals will be some (not all) of the considerations
