People from across the world have been urged to join the climate movement from their homes via a digital livestream. Even as the world battles the novel coronavirus which continues to claim lives, Earth Hour, observed annually on the last Saturday of March, will still be celebrated this year today, albeit digitally. With public events cancelled due to the pandemic, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is encouraging people to switch off the lights from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm as per their local time. The idea is to refrain from the use of non-essential lighting to save energy in a symbolic call for environmental protection. People from across the world have been urged to join the climate movement from their homes via a digital livestream. With impactful social media challenges, WWF India is also urging people to pledge to protect the planet and its invaluable biodiversity. Usually, the hour is marked by turning off all electrical items, this year the United Nations has asked people to take a moment to honour those on frontlines fighting for the health of the citizens of the planet - our courageous health workers Source: https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/life-style/coronavirus-covid19-pandemic-earth-hour-2020-india-sustainable-living-6335605/

good morning. is there any way one can retrive the application number?? please help. |
On Monday 27th, researchers from Japan's Osaka University announced the successful completion of a first-of-its-kind heart transplant. Rather than replacing their patient's entire heart with a new organ, these researchers placed degradable sheets containing heart muscle cells onto the heart's damaged areas - and if the procedure has the desired effect, it could eventually eliminate the need for some entire heart transplants. To grow the heart muscle cells, the team started with induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. These are stem cells that researchers create by taking an adult's cells - often from their skin or blood - and reprogramming them back into their embryonic-like pluripotent state. At that point, researchers can coax the iSP cells into becoming whatever kind of cell they'd like. In the case of this Japanese study, the researchers created heart muscle cells from the iSP cells before placing them on small sheets. The patient who received the transplant suffers from ischemic cardiomyopathy, a condition in which a person's heart has trouble pumping because its muscles don't receive enough blood. In severe cases, the condition can require a heart transplant, but the team from Osaka University hopes that the muscle cells on the sheet will secrete a protein that helps regenerate blood vessels, thereby improving the patient's heart function. The researchers plan to monitor the patient for the next year, and they hope to conduct the same procedure on nine other people suffering from the same condition within the next three years. If all goes well, the procedure could become a much-needed alternative to heart transplants - not only is sourcing iPS cells far easier than finding a suitable donor heart, but a recipient's immune system is more likely to tolerate the cells than a new organ. "I hope that (the transplant) will become a medical technology that will save as many people as possible, as I've seen many lives that I couldn't save," researcher Yoshiki Sawa said at a news conference, according to The Japan Times. A new SARS-like virus has killed six people in China and infected nearly 300 others. Fears have been mounting that the virus will spread during the massive annual Lunar New Year migration. A host of Asian countries and the United States have introduced new screening checks for passengers from Wuhan, the Chinese city identified as the epicentre. Here's what we know about the virus: 1. It's entirely new The virus appears to be a never-before-seen strain of coronavirus - a large family of viruses that can cause diseases ranging from the common cold to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which killed 349 people in mainland China and another 299 in Hong Kong between 2002 and 2003. Arnaud Fontanet, head of the department of epidemiology at the Institut Pasteur in Paris, told AFP the current virus strain was 80 percent genetically identical to SARS. China has already shared the genome sequencing of this novel coronavirus with the international scientific community. 2. It's being passed between humans The World Health Organization said Monday it believed an animal source was the "primary source" of the outbreak, and Wuhan authorities identified a seafood market as the centre of the epidemic. But China has since confirmed that there was evidence the virus is now passing from person to person, without any contact with the market. Doctor Nathalie MacDermott of King's College London said it seems likely that the virus is spread through droplets in the air from sneezing or coughing. Doctors at the University of Hong Kong published an initial paper Tuesday modelling the spread of the virus which estimated that there have been some 1,343 cases in Wuhan - similar to a projection of 1,700 last week by Imperial College, London. Both are much higher than official figures. 3. It is milder than SARS Compared with SARS, the symptoms appear to be less aggressive, and experts say the death toll is still relatively low. According to authorities in Wuhan, 25 of the more than 200 people infected in the city have already been discharged. "It's difficult to compare this disease with SARS," said Zhong Nanshan, a renowned scientist at China's National Health Commission at a press conference this week. "It's mild. The condition of the lung is not like SARS." However, the milder nature of the virus can also cause alarm. 4. It could lead to an international public health emergency The WHO will hold a meeting on Wednesday to determine whether the outbreak constitutes a "public health emergency of international concern" and if so, what should be done to manage it. The agency has only used the rare label a handful of times, including during the H1N1 - or swine flu - pandemic of 2009 and the Ebola epidemic that devastated parts of West Africa from 2014 to 2016. The Chinese government announced Tuesday it was classifying the outbreak in the same category as the SARS outbreak, meaning compulsory isolation for those diagnosed with the disease and the potential to implement quarantine measures on travel. But if the WHO decides to take this step, it would put the Wuhan virus in the same category as a handful of very serious epidemics. Smoking is generally considered horrible for your health. There are too many studies to cite here. However, in doing some research on IBDs (Inflammatory Bowel Diseases), it has been shown that while smoking is bad for people who suffer Crohn’s Disease, it has been demonstrated to be a positive for people with Ulcerative Colitis. Additionally, it helps prevent the disease. One study explaining this with other citations to other studies can be found here https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2014383/ It should be noted, however, that the likely main positive factor is simply the nicotine (not the other harmful chemicals in smoke), which is hypothesized to increase mucus production in the colon as well as suppress the immune system (IBDs are auto-immune disorders). While I am not a doctor and this is based solely on my own amateur research, my strong sense is that the side effects of smoking GREATLY outweigh any benefits of helping prevent and control this one relatively rare disease.
