PoliticsJailbreak In Ahoada, Rivers: One Feared Dead, Four Allegedly Escape by Ndoz(op): 12:50am On Oct 29, 2012
PORT HARCOURT—One person was feared dead and four other inmates allegedly escaped on Saturday during a riotous scene at the FederalPrison, Ahoada, Rivers State
Vanguard gathered that nineother inmates whose attempt to also break loose was foiled by security operatives, sustained injuries.
When contacted, State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ben Ugwuegbulam, confirmed the jailbreak attempt, but quickly added that no inmate escaped.
According to him, the Police, in conjunction with other security operatives, foiled theescape bid by the inmates.
He said two of the prisoners who made frantic effort to escape through the ceiling were shot.
He said: “At about 1700hrs, inmates of Federal Prison Ahoada attempted breaking out unlawfully from custody. Ahoada Police Area Command swiftly mobilised to the scene and together with other security agencies cordoned off the entire perimeter of the prison. Consequently the escaping inmates retreated to the confines of the prisons.
“Two of the inmates that tried to escape through the ceiling were shot at to prevent their escape and were fatally wounded in the process. No escape was recorded.”
Meanwhile, sources within the prison confirmed the escape of four inmates adding that nine were injured while one was killed.
The sources said trouble started on Saturday when warders returned to the prison with some of the prisoners they allegedly took out to fetch fire wood and water.
The prisoners, according to the sources, suddenly resisted effort by the warders to lock them in theircells.
In the heat of the pandemonium, the sources said, the prisoners forced theATM cell open and this immediately triggered tension in the prison as inmates made frantic efforts to scale the fence.
The sources said the timely arrival of security operatives who shot sporadically to stop the prisoners from fleeing saved the situation.
Vanguard gathered that before the situation finally came under control, four of the prisoners had escaped, one died, while nine others reportedly sustained injuries.
Another source told Vanguard that the attemptedjailbreak looked like an action the prisoners had been contemplating.
Vanguard gathered that security operatives had been put on alert in the area abouta possible jailbreak plan by inmates but nobody knew when they were to strike, and that explained the timelyarrival of security operatives

Music/RadioWhere Is Paul Play Dairo? by Ndoz(op): 12:01pm On Oct 27, 2012
When Paul Play stormed the music scene with a resurrected version of his father’s Mo So Rire in 1999, everyone knew a star had been born and then he hit usagain and again the following year with hit single’s Angel of my life, Forever, You and me and his career shot for the skies, the rest you know is history.

But for long now, Paul Play has been missing in action. His illness being the number one reason that has sent him into a long hiatus and now Paul Play Dairo may have merged with history itself.

In an interview he granted a reporter early this year, Paul Play thankfully jumped back into our consciousness. In that interview, he admitted his disappearance; blaming it rightly on an illness that almost wiped his name cleanoff the slate of music or perhaps this very world. He said he had been taking time to recuperate and was now set to launch a new album which would be in limited supply as it was going to be an ”expensive” album… (just like 2face’s)

That interview is now more than six months old and music fans as they are known world wide have really short memory.

So on Star Search this week, we ask : Where is Paul Play Dairo? And we also ask you our readers to tackle this question: why do our celebrities who once had it big in music eventually fade away?

Nairaland GeneralAbandoned Baby Found Dead Behind Unical Hostel by Ndoz(op): 11:51am On Oct 27, 2012
A two-day old baby abandoned by an unknown mother was found dead behind the Medical Students Hostel, University of Calabar near the office of the Cross River State first lady, Mrs. Obioma Liyel-Imoke.
Mrs. Imoke in the last five years had been waging war against teenage pregnancy and child abandonment through her pets’ projects and had been able to put a stop to rampant baby abandonment in the state despite alleged campaign of calumny carried recently against her.
Speaking at the scene where the dead baby was abandoned, special assistant to the Governor on Public Health/ NGO and SpecialProjects, Dr. Regina Ejemot-Nwadiaro said her attention was drawn to the incident by an anonymous caller which prompted her presence at the scene.
Nwadiaro said that immediately she got to the place, she called the Calabar Urban Development Authority, CUDA, who quickly responded to the call and subsequently alerted the Police.
She condemned the perpetrator of which she described as a dastardly act, callous, inhuman and outright wickedness.
According to her, “for the past five years the wife of the State Governor Mrs. Obioma Liyel-Imoke, has been championing the stamping out of teenage pregnancy child abandonment inthe state through her project; Mothers’ Against Child Abandonment (MACA).
“It is thus, disheartening that in spite of the consistent efforts by Mrs. Obioma Liyel-Imoke and the MACA team, people could still dump babies.”

Nairaland GeneralCynthia’s Murder: Lawyers Hail FG Plan To Ban `rape Drug’ by Ndoz(op): 11:42am On Oct 27, 2012
Lagos – Lawyers and social critics on Friday commended the Federal Government’s move to ban the sale of the ‘date rape drug’, allegedly used to kill Miss Cynthia Osokogu.

They gave the commendation in separate interviews in Lagos.
The Federal Executive Councilmeeting on Wednesday in Abuja resolved to ban the sale of rophynol drug.
`Rohypnol’, clinically known as Flunitrazepam, a sedative with hypnotic effect was used to lure late Osokogu to complacency and later killed.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, said after the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting that the governmentplanned to ban the drug because of the need to curb its disastrous use.
He said that the Act No. 43 of1989, which established the National Drug Formulary and Essential Drugs List, empowers it to prohibit importation and manufacturing of any drug not on the list.
A Lagos based lawyer and founding member of the African in Democracy and Good Governance (ADG), Mr Edwin Nebolisa, said the decision appropriate.
He said that the ban was informed by the ugly trend ofthe abuse of the drug by the youths, and stressed the need to check the excesses of youths, which was becoming worrisome.
He also said that pharmacy stores and hospitals should be discouraged from dispensing such drugs because it had become a means of facilitating incidence of rape.

A facilitator with the Legal Defence and Assistant Project(LEDAP), Mr Noel Brown, also aligned with the decision of the government and advocated the ban of other sedative drugs.
Brown described as alarmingmade in which youths take to drugs in quest for adventure.
“Rape, by its nature, constituted an act of gender violence. Employing the use of sedatives is simply devilishand must be treated with thehighest level of disdain,’’ he said.
He advised parents to watch the types of company their wards keep, stressing that evil acts pollute good manners.

Mr Spurgeon Ataene, a lawyer, said that it was rather inconceivable that teenage boys had formed the habit of luring girls with the use of sedative.
“They do this to weaken their victim and get away with the heinous acts. Eventually, some of these drugs end up claiming the lives of their victims,’’ he said.
He, therefore, called for full implementation of the ban, adding that government should decisively deal with offenders who go against the policy.

In August, four accused persons, Echezona Nwabufo 33, Ejike Olisaeloka, 23, Orji Osita, 32, and Maduakor Chukwunonso, 25, were paraded by the police in Lagos for the murder of Osokogu.
They told the police, how they met, drugged and strangled their victim, in order to steal her money.
The accused, currently in prison custody, were arraigned before a Yaba Magistrates’ court in September for the offence. (NAN)

CelebritiesYvonne Nelson At War With Rumour Mongers…releasesstatement by Ndoz(op): 8:07pm On Oct 26, 2012
Celebrities at the top of their food chain usually treated rumours flying about them with a cold shoulder and then silence, only reacting when a journalist walks up and confronts them with it.
Top Ghanian actress, Yvonne Nelson, however, is not waiting for any journalist norwill she be silent on this newmatter.
She has perceived danger in a rumour she claims is making the rounds in media reports about her bleaching her skin and has taken the news to the press by releasing a statement.
“My attention has been drawn to recent media reports that I am bleaching my skin and the continuous nature of this wicked, unfounded and absolutely unnecessary misinformation have compelled me to once again respond.
*Yvonne Nelson
These stories are absolutely not true and do not in any way put food on anybody’s table, does not add value to any body’s life and can only be described as mischief.
I fully understand the dangers of skin bleaching and would not engage in anysuch venture. I am a lady andI appreciate my God-given looks. I do not need to change my skin colour for any reason.
Truth is that even if I was bleaching, I do not owe anyone any explanation, but I am not bleaching, I have not bleached and I won’t bleach.
I love my skin just the way it is and I do my best to keep ithealthy and nice.
If God has remained good to me and continues to make my skin nicer, I do not see how it should be a problem to someone.
In a society that largely frowns on skin bleaching, it would be unfair and very unkind to falsely accuse me of bleaching when I am absolutely innocent of that charge.
As an actress I take different pictures under different shades of light and with different shades of makeup depending on what the picture would be used for.
It is therefore not strange to find different pictures of me looking different. It does not mean I am bleaching and one does not need to be an industry player to know this.
Even in movies, depending on who the director is, there are different lighting angles and brightness levels that can be used to make a character look different and this is no secret. Even a change of weather can have an effect of one’s skin.
I want to use this platform toassure all persons who have expressed worry about thesereports that there is no cause for alarm because I amnot bleaching, have not bleached and would not bleach.
There are more prudent and beneficial things to focus on and these frequent distractions are of no use.
I should have spent this time focusing on my new movies or memorizing my next script and not responding to false gossips.”
Thank you. Sincerely yours, Yvonne Nelson

Music/RadioAlleged Murder Of Mum: P-square Opens Up! by Ndoz(op): 9:52am On Oct 26, 2012
Our journey into the music world
It started like a dream but today, we thank God all the glory because it has become a reality. When we started, we had late Michael Jackson as our mentor. That was whyin one of our songs titled, Busy Body which we released about 12 years ago, we tried to copy Michael Jackson’s dance steps.
Then, our fans used to call us, Paul and Peter. He influenced our musical career. We were challenged by Michael Jackson’s huge achievements in the world ofmusic. We said to ourselves, if Michael Jackson could do all of these, we could equally do better. So, we tried our best and by the grace of God and our fans, we have realise our dreams.
Deal with Konvict music
The only thing we can say, is that we have been signed under Konvict. And to prove this new deal which most people are still doubting, we featured Akon in our ‘’Chop my Money” remix.
Our private life!
You call it private and that’s why, most times we don’t like to discuss it for personal reasons.
Handling your female fans!
P- Square
My dear, it is not easy. However, we handle everybody with love and care. One thing is to be a celebrity, and another is knowing how to handle all that comes with it. Sometimes, they will call on us just to hear our voices and to wish us well.
What do you do during your leisure time?
Sometimes, we swim or play basketball with our friends.
Why was J. Martins not featured in your latest album,“Invasion”?
We have no problem with J Martins. He was not in the country when we released the album. You know as we are busy so also are others too. And you don’t expect them to displease themselvesin order to please you. But we are in good terms.
Challenges in the industry so far….
A lot of challenges, sometimes after releasing analbum our marketers will want to give us condition that we go 50/50. It’s very difficult to compromise with them. Sometimes, if you enter the studio to record you song, they will compel you to do what you wouldn’twant to do.
The craziest thing you have ever done!
Laughs.. that was when we went for a night party some years ago. Some desperate girls were all over us and before we knew what was happening, they were kissing and romancing us openly. We had to run for our dear lives.
Most embarrassing moment
It was when we were coming up. Some of our kinsmen walked up to us and told us that its high time we join them in the village and stop roaming about as if we are not conversant with the tradition of our people. We felt embarrassed. But unfortunately, we later adhered to their advice.
How do you feel about your mum’ s death?
We feel so bad to know that our mum is no more. But who are we to question the Almighty God. Traditionally, we are supposed to bury herand not the other way round. It is just that it happened so soon.. Indeed, her death was a big blow to us.
It was rumoured that you people knew what happenedto her?
Then, it is too bad to hear that people are accusing us of being responsible for our mum’s death. We are not blaming anybody. People are free to say what they want tosay. We begin to wonder whether there is anything that will ever make us to go for the life of our beloved mother.
Her life cannot be quantified in terms of money or fame. So, our answer to this question is that we have no hand in our mum’s death. Weonly blame the death that snatched her away from us ifnot so, people won’t be pointing accusing fingers at us. She died after a brief illness.
Aside your mum’s death, there was another rumour that you guys have joined Illuminati?
We are short of words. Why would anybody say such things about us? Well, the fact remains that we do not belong to any secret cult, whether Illuminati or anything you call it. We owe our achievements and everything that is happening to us to Almighty God.

CrimeMan Charged For Stealing N1000 Bible by Ndoz(op): 9:44am On Oct 26, 2012
A 25-year-old unemployed man, Ade Akindele, has been arraigned before Ojo Magistrate Court in Lagos, forallegedly stealing a King James Version of the Bible valued at N1,000, from a shop.

Akindele, who had no fixed residence, was said to have become dazed after allegedlyremoving a black purse and a Bible from the table of one Miss Blessing Awodita (complainant), while she wasasleep.

It was gathered that the accused, after allegedly stealing the Bible, stood in the shop for a while with theBible in his hand, staring at the complainant who was sleeping, before he was nabbed.

The prosecutor, ASP Friday Eze, informed the court that when the complainant suddenly woke up from her slumber, she did not find it funny to see the stranger gazing at her, with her Bible and purse in his hands. He told the court that the frightened woman shouted for help and two of her male neighbours accosted the accused who resisted but was subdued by the men.

According to the prosecutor, “the accused was staying at the mechanic garage on Aka Road, off Salami Street, Afromedia, Lagos and committed the offence on October 9, at about 9.30 a.m.,at Shop B, No. 22, Adebisi Close, Sabo Ajangbadi, Lagos.”

However, when the plea of the accused was taken before the magistrate, Mr. T.OShomade, he first pleaded “guilty” but later changed to “not guilty,” to an offence that contravened Section 285of the Criminal Code, Laws of Lagos State.

Sequel to the accused plea, the magistrate granted him bail in the sum of N10,000 with one surety and adjourned the case till November 12 for mention.

CrimeMan, 39, Bags 5 Years Sentence For Defiling 5-year-old Girl by Ndoz(op): 6:10pm On Oct 25, 2012
A Magistrates’ Court in Benin on Wednesday sentenced Mr Saturday Udoh, 39, to five years imprisonment with an option of N80, 000 fine for defiling a five-year-old girl.
Delivering judgement, Chief Magistrate Mike Osayi held that the prosecution, led by Sergeant Shaibu Mohammed, proved its case of defilement against the convict as required by law.
The prosecution had told the court that Udoh committed the offence on May 31, at Falodun Country Home Motel, Benin, and that the one-count charge contravened Section 218 of the criminal code.
The court held that the evidence of the convict that he went to collect money from somebody at the house opposite where he worked when the incident happened was untrue.
The court also faulted the witnesses called by the convict, noting that their testimonies were conflicting.
The court further held that the proximity between the convict’s residence and his office could not rule out the possibility of the convict dashing home to commit the offence and returning to work.
The court also held that there was identification parade conducted in the house and the little girl pointed at the convict asbeing responsible for her defilement.
Osayi described the victim as intelligent due to her evidence in court as well as the manner she responded to questions put to her by the court during cross examination.
Consequently, the court found Udoh guilty and sentenced him accordingly. (NAN)

Politics8 Die In Rivers Flood Victims Relief Camps by Ndoz(op): 6:05am On Oct 25, 2012
By JIMITOTA ONOYUME
PORT HARCOURT— NO fewer than eight victims of the flood disaster in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State, have died at their camps.
Deputy Governor of Rivers State and Chairman of the State Flood Relief Committee, Tele Ikuru, whoannounced this yesterday in Port Harcourt, said the government would not hesitate to sanction any traditional ruler caught diverting relief materials meant for victims.

According to the Deputy Governor, there are reports that some traditional rulers and community leaders were diverting relief materials meant for victims in camps in their domains.
Ikuru urged traditional rulers and leaders in communities affected by the flood to work with government officials to effectively distribute the relief materials.

He said: “It is absurd for chiefs and leaders of some communities to bring their chieftaincy and communal problems to the camps, and engage in favoritism and criminal diversion of relief materials meant for the flood victims. Such acts of criminality will not be condoned henceforth, and defaulters will be made to face the full wrath of the law.”
The deputy governor implored the Federal Government to increase the amount penciled down for the state by the FederalGovernment to mitigate the plight of victims of the flood disaster. According to him, the N300 million earmarked for the state is too small to make any impact
