Career / My Amazing Encounter With Nkem by Ndubuisioma(m): 12:41pm On Sep 08, 2018
So today I decided to get a haircut, been long I did that, and it's been three weeks since I came home from school on holiday.

Now when it comes to cutting my hair and trimming my beards, I take particular care selecting a barber and luckily for me, I had a barber whom I have stuck with for two years now, I call him my house barber, because I have another barber in school.

On getting to the barbershop, everything was as you would expect, strands of hair all over the place, sound of the generator and its choking fumes, my barber ever busy with his clipper and the usual aimless arguments and shouts by waiting customers who never seem to have a point of reference in their arguments, jumping from one topic to another.

But amongst all these, there was something different in that shop today, something unique, peculiar, it was the sight of another barber, a female barber, and her name was Nkem.
Now, during my two years of knowing and patronizing my barber, one thing he's known for is his strong headedness about getting a second barber to assist him despite several complaints by customers about the long waiting time to get a haircut.
Now what amazed me the most was that not only did my barber finally get an assistant, he got a female barber. There must be something special about this lady for him to employ her.

Well as you would have it, I got there and immediately refused her offer to cut my hair, mainly because I felt she wasn't good enough or experienced enough and I decided to wait my turn with my barber. While I was waiting and keeping myself busy by listening to the usual shortsighted arguments of the customers, an old man probably in his 70's walked in and asked to get a haircut, as usual, Nkem offered to give him, but the man bluntly refused saying he's an old man and no girl can touch his head or hair, some of the other customers then proceeded to persuade the old man to allow Nkem cut his hair because he might not be able to join us in waiting his turn but in reply he asked me in particular, "why you no want make she cut your own hair?" and I quickly replied "I no sure say she go fit barb this my style" before the old man could even reply, Nkem swiftly and quickly replied me, saying "point of correction, no be say I no go fit cut your hair, just say you no want make I cut your hair, no come here dey kill my career".

As much as I was taken aback by her swift response, I was more impressed with the confidence and assuredness with which she defended herself but still wasn't convinced that she could cut my hair. Just as all these were going on, another waiting customer who was probably in his mid forties said to all of us "let me give her a try, maybe she can convince me" and proceeded to sit in her chair for his haircut and I closely observed. The ease and swiftness with which she expertly gave him a haircut astounded me, I did not know when I went to sit in her chair for my own haircut: after apologizing for my earlier comments, but she calmly replied me and said, "no problem, just sit down make I cut your hair",and she got to work. The way she carved the hair and trimmed the beards with an air of calmness around her, indeed she was coolness personified, I was so amazed and curious that I engaged her in a conversation, I then asked where she learnt how to barb, that was when I learnt that she was a student of English in DELSU, the only word I could muster was "wow", so you're in school and still barbing, she said that's one of the things she does to make ends meet. I was so amazed and ashamed and kept on apologizing to her for my initial comments. She was soon done with my hair and by that time, customers were already in line waiting for her because by now, her works were speaking for her...
That was when I really understood what Female power is, it wasn't her body or fine looks or her trim body, it was her character, skill, determination to survive and make it in a male dominated field despite the challenges, doubts and discouragement from customers.

Today I was taught a brutal lesson in life and just as the old saying goes, "never judge a book by its cover" in this case, "never underestimate a woman who is determined and focused to achieve her goals in life, you just may be shocked beyond your wildest imagination"
Truly Nkem taught me a lot of life lessons today and number one is never to look down on people just because they don't seem to fit in with the status quo. How Nkem is able to hold her own in the male dominated barbing profession and still carry on fine with her education is a topic for another day.
Nkem is not odd, Nkem is UNIQUE.

Romance / How To Get That Christian Brother Or Sister. by Ndubuisioma(m): 11:45am On Aug 24, 2017
Dear Spiritual Sisters,

Just because a gentle believing brother asked you out at church doesn't make him any less spiritual, and neither does it reduce his anointing. Do not loose your respect for him because he ministers in the morning and woos you at night, do not look down on his level of grace because he leads Bible study on Sunday and sends you love poems on Friday, say no in a polite manner if you do not feel any personal conviction to return interest. Do not judge him, for above everything else love is a basic necessity of life, after all if we don't toast you in the presence of God where else again? Is it in the club we will now go and do it?

And you too Spiritual Brother,
Its like I will have to do a special series on how to woo a believing sister, because you people are equally not encouraging at all. The way you approach a sister in faith matters a lot, some of you are born again but your toasting skills still needs some serious repentance, you'll just carry your street credibility and enter the house of God . See guys, there is nothing spiritual about toasting, open up and say it as it is doing you, don't approach a sister and start talking about how Nebuchadnezzar prayed for a wife and God heard him, go straight to the matters arising and forget about how Jonah swallowed the big fish, abi it was the fish that even swallowed Jonah.

That was how I was doing my 5minutes mediation after service one sunday when one choir master approached a sister beside me like;

" hi, i was watching you all through service, I love the way you worship"

Arrh arrhh watchman! You love the way she worship how? Are you assistant Holy Spirit? all in a bid to maintain his spiritual status in her eyes, haba uncle, this is one of the few battles where we are allowed to use small carnal weapons, hehehehe.

Start by complimenting her first, shower her with a little honest Jesus praise. Let me show you, start like this;

"Hi, wow! you look so nice in that blue dress (pause and wait for her to smile and say thank you, then pounce) been kinda observing you around lately, and I just thought I could come over and introduce myself in a bit, my name is Adedeji Oladapo, (pause and wait for her to tell you hers, if you like go and be rushing, then pounce again) nice to meet you Chocolate. Hope you enjoyed the service today? (Wait again for her reply, then end the spiritual move there, don't go and be asking her what she learnt from pastor's preaching, go straight to the point) will I be asking for too much if i ask you out to a movie next weekend? Or, got any plans for next weekend? Cos I have two movie and I was wondering if you would like to go with me.

(If she says she's not free)
nicely say 'oh , alright, maybe another time then, I will see you at the midweek service on Tuesday, enjoy a good week Chocolate." That's it, don't go and be asking for phone number, relax, knowing her name is a first victory, there's always a next Sunday)

(If she says she's free, great)
Nicely sound a little bit surprise, like 'oh wow, really, so mind if I give you a call sometime during the week to remind you? (Sure she'll say okay) then ask for her number. When you get it, stand there and call her first to make sure it rings, because some of these our sisters too can weak somebody, before She'll go and give you Angel Gabriel's phone number because you have mouth odour, hehehehe. So when you confirm it, just end with "thanks Chocolate, I will give you a call, enjoy a beautiful week, bye.

If you like don't carry small carnal weapon and enter toasting warfare, be there doing smeh smeh.

Politics / How President Buhari Is Causing Chaos. by Ndubuisioma(m): 1:07pm On Jul 04, 2016
Editor’s note: President Muhammadu Buhari
has been criticised for his ‘lopsided
appointment’ that has seen persons from the
northern part of the country.
In this opinion by Azuka Onwuka, he points out
that a one-sided appointment is likely to create
a crack in the country and make on region
stronger than the other.
Northern dominance
With last week’s appointment of Mr Ibrahim
Idris as the Acting Inspector-General of Police,
President Muhammadu Buhari further made
the headship of virtually all the military-cum-
defence agencies and related agencies which
wear uniform a Northern affair.
It show the following: Chief of Army Staff, Lt.
Gen. Tukur Buratai, North; Chief of Air Staff, Air
Marshal Sadique Abubakar, North; Acting
Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris,
North; Minister of Defence, Brig Gen (retd)
Mansur Dan Ali, North; National Security
Adviser, Major Gen (retd.) Babagana Munguno,
North; Chairman, Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission, Mr Ibrahim Magu, North;
Director-General, Department of State Services,
Mr Lawal Daura, North; Comptroller-General of
Nigeria Customs Service, Col Hameed Ali (retd.),
North; Comptroller-General, Nigerian
Immigration Service, Mr Kure Abeshi, North;
Controller-General, Nigerian Prisons Service,
Alhaji Ja’afaru Ahmed, North; Commandant-
General, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence
Corps, Mr Abdullahi Muhammadu, North;
Director-General of the National Youth Service
Corps, Brig Gen Sule Kazaure, North;
Comptroller-General of the Federal Fire Service ,
Mr Garba Anebi, North. If it is recalled that the Minister of Interior, Lt.
Gen. Abdulrahman Damazzau (retd.), under
whose ministry are Prisons Service,
Immigration Service, Fire Service and the
Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, is also
from the North, then the Ministry of the Interior
with its agencies is virtually controlled by the
North in clear breach of the Federal Character
policy enshrined in the constitution.
Buhari
Furthermore, even though it was not Buhari that
did it, yet for the first time in the history of
Nigeria, all the three arms of government are
headed by Northerners: Executive, President
Muhammadu Buhari; Legisture, Dr Bukola
Saraki; and Judiciary, Justice Mahmud
Mohammed.
In addition, the two arms of the legislature are
headed by Northerners: Dr Bukola Saraki,
Senate President, and Mr Yakubu Dogara,
Speaker, House of Representatives.
Currently, the three levels of the law courts are
headed by Northerners: The Chief Justice of the
Supreme Court is Justice Mahmud Mohammed
(North); the President of the Court of Appeal is
Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwa (North);
while the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court
is Justice Ibrahim Auta (North). It should be
recalled that in 2015, Buhari appointed Alhaji
Abubakar Malami as the Attorney-General of
the Federation and Minister of Justice, also from
the North.
Furthermore, the Chairman of the Independent
National Electoral Commission, which
supervises the conduct of national and state
elections, is also a Northerner: Prof. Mahmood
Yakubu. The unwritten code used to be that the
President of the country would appoint
someone from a different zone (different
language, different religion) as the INEC
Chairman to give a sense of balance and
increase the believability in the “independence”
of INEC. That was why many people raised their
voices when Buhari appointed Yakubu, who is
from Bauchi State, just one state away from
Buhari’s Katsina State, as the INEC boss; for
even though Bauchi is grouped under the North-
East, it is not seen as being culturally and
religiously different from Katsina. It is like a
President from the South-East appointing an
Igbo from Delta State or Rivers State as INEC
Chairman because Delta and Rivers are
technically in the South-South, or a President
from the South-West appointing a Yoruba from
Kwara and Kogi as INEC Chairman on the
grounds that Kwara and Kogi are in the North.
The dangerous trend
The argument of those who support this
dangerous precedent is that what matters is
getting those who are qualified and who will get
the required results. But that argument is
baseless. Statistics show that the North does
not come close to the South in education and
manpower. Year after year, statistics from the
Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board show
that any pair of Imo State and Delta or Imo
State and Ogun or Imo State and Anambra
produces more candidates than the 19 states of
the North. State-by-state performance statistics
in senior secondary school examination from
NECO and WASSCE also show that no Northern
state usually appears among the top 10 states.
Admission into Unity Schools follows the same
trend. That is why the least cut-off marks are
given to Northern states. However, competent
hands can be found in abundance from all
zones and states of Nigeria.
President Muhammadu Buhari
In addition, if it does not matter where office
holders come from, why didn’t Buhari choose
popular politicians like Kwankwaso, Atiku
Abubakar, Nasiru el-Rufai or Aminu Tambuwal,
all fellow Northerners, as his running mate? He
knew that if he had done that, he would have
lost the election, no matter how “qualified, clean
and popular” he and his running mate were.
These two points testify to the fact that Buhari
benefited from zoning and balancing of offices.
Furthermore, our constitution states that
federal appointments must reflect federal
character. Buhari has only reflected that in the
appointment of ministers. In other
appointments, he has disregarded that aspect
of our constitution that he swore to uphold. What does the future hold?
The danger in this is that in future, a Southern
President may decide to do something worse
than what Buhari is currently doing. If any part
complains, they will be given ample evidence of
how it was done in the past by Buhari and many
people rationalised it. In addition, a diverse
country like Nigeria needs the President to take
actions and make statements that show that he
treats all parts of the country equally. Much of
the tension and crisis in the country today can
be attributed to the obvious unfairness that
Buhari has displayed in his one year in office. A
President with an all-inclusive orientation would
have won over the majority of those who did
not even vote for him within his six months in
office. But Buhari’s actions show that he does
not care. He seems to say: “You can say
whatever you like or do whatever you like, it will
not stop me from carrying on the way I like.”
One of the points those who opposed Buhari’s
presidential ambition raised against him was
that given his antecedents, he would not be fair
to all Nigerians based on ethnicity and religion.
By his actions and utterances, he has not
proved that view wrong. This does not augur
well for the unity, peace and progress of the
nation.
Even some Northern groups and personalities
like Alhaji Balarabe Musa, a former Kaduna
State governor; Alhaji Tanko Yakassai,
Chairman of the Northern Elders Forum; and Dr
Junaid Mohammed, Convener of the Coalition
of Northern Politicians, academics,
professionals and businessmen, who see the
bigger picture and the inherent danger in this
trend, have raised their voices against this trend
by Buhari.
As the President of Nigeria, Buhari is like the
father of the nation. A father who loves his
home and wants the peace and progress of that
home avoids actions and utterances that will
show he favours some children and create a
gulf among his children.
This opinion first appeared in The Punch.
