Education / Seven Things Nigerian Students Can Do While ASUU Is On Strike by needmyservice: 2:55pm On Aug 16, 2017
It has been a few years since students in Nigerians had to deal with long-term strikes; and just at the moment we thought the era of students having to stay an extra 2 to 3 years in school due to unnecessary strikes by championed by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was over, they strike again.
It certainly felt like Deja Vu when the National President Of The Union, Dr. Biodun Ogunyemi, announced this on Monday at a meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU in Abuja that there would be an indefinite strike and that during the strike, there will be no teaching, no examination and no attendance of statutory meetings of any kind in any of the union’s branches across the country.
There is some value in ASUU going on strike. They hope that issues such as payment of fractions/ non-payment of salaries, as well as Earned Academic Allowances (EAA); refusal to release the operational license of NUPEMCO; and the non-implementation of the provisions of the 2014 Pension Reform Act with respect to retired professors and their salaries, will be sorted.
It is easy for affected students to get into a lazy mode, where they sit around doing nothing or just meshing the entire time into one long continual nap fest…wasting valuable time and making no positive strides in their life all through the period of the strike.
If you are one of the affected students and you are wondering how you could possibly make this “indefinite” time worth your while, you may want to consider a handy list of helpful suggestions.

Business / Food Is A Necessity, But You Can Still Fail At Running A Food Business. by needmyservice: 12:08am On Aug 16, 2017
Before starting your own food business, consider first these common mistakes that have some food business owners their businesses time and again.

Wrong Location
The first course of action is to do a quick survey about the people/company in the area. A buka in Ebute Metta may not do well in a location like Adeola Odeku, Victoria island. Will you rely on foot traffic? Does your food require natural or local resources? What kinds of zoning restrictions might you encounter?

Business / The Four Roles Every Entrepreneur Team Should Have by needmyservice: 8:14pm On Aug 14, 2017
Entrepreneurial success rarely comes from the idea. Instead, it comes from the founding team’s never-say-die attitude and relentless execution.
And a startup can only be as successful as its founding team. When there’s rapid scaling up in size and limited resources, the composition of a founding team is especially critical for what I’ve identified as exponential organizations — or companies that have impact (or output) at least 10 times larger than their peers.
The rapid pace of growth of exponential organizations requires an extra emphasis on a fully synergistic core team. Peter Thiel, for example, told his co-founders (Elon Musk, Reid Hoffman, Luke Nosek, Max Levchin and Chad Hurley) and employees that they should all work together as friends rather than as employees. Not only was PayPal very successful as a company, but the team is now known as the PayPal Mafia, whose members have helped one another on other startups including Tesla, YouTube, SpaceX, LinkedIn, Yelp, Yammer and Palantircompanies that today have a total market capitalization exceeding $60 billion.
While synergy among founding members is important, diversity within the core team is crucial. I’ve identified the following critical roles for founding teams that are seeking exponential growth:

Business / How To Get Business Loans Without Collateral by needmyservice: 9:17am On Aug 13, 2017
If you are a small or medium business owner, establishing a relationship with a bank by opening an account can help boost your personal business.
Banks are the major lending institutions to individuals and organisations in the society. However, to access loans from banks, the borrower needs to understand what they require in order to qualify for any credit facility.
It is relevant to know that banks do not just give out loans to anybody that approaches them. The lender needs enough evidence from the borrower on his ability to repay the facility that he is asking for.
Banks usually tie their approval of loans to specific projects or purposes such as meeting urgent exigencies or supporting business plans.
Generally, it is easier for employees who work in well established organisations to get loans in banks where they domicile their salaries. This is because the banks can always deduct a certain percentage of their monthly salaries until the total money borrowed is repaid.
When the borrower does not have a salary account with the bank, the lender usually asks for collateral before granting loans.
However, without collateral, some banks can still give you loans if you meet the following conditions.

Business / Struggles Of A Makeup Artists by needmyservice: 5:53am On Aug 12, 2017
From small makeup mishaps to the trials and tribulations that structure your entire makeup career, being a freelance makeup artist isn’t easy. But it can be one of the most rewarding careers with one of the most diverse career paths.
Since you’re not reporting to anyone or company, you’re your own boss. As you reap all the rewards of being a freelancer, such as setting your own rates and choosing your clients, you also have to be the sole bearer of all the difficulties along the way. It may seem like you’re all alone, but you really aren’t! All freelancing makeup artists know that the struggle is real.

When a client reaches for your kit
… and your mind goes a mile a minute asking questions like, “Have they washed their hands?”, “Are they touching everything in that drawer?” and “Don’t drop it. Don’t drop it. Don’t drop it!” If they end up going near any exposed palettes and doing swatches of your products, remember to disinfect everything after your appointment!

When clients ask you for a discount during or after application
We know it’s hard, but one of the perks of being a freelancer is being able to say NO! Being a freelancer that you are, you’ve probably already put together a contract and had it signed by your client. They know your rates coming into it, and if they wanted a discount, they should have asked beforehand!

When you have to wash multiple brush sets at once
Sometimes you’ll end up using almost all the brushes from three different brush sets during the same appointment. Cleaning brushes is definitely one of the least exciting aspects of your job, but giving your brushes a thorough wash is absolutely necessary

When it’s time to restock your makeup
As a Makeup artist, nothing is more stressful than a giant shopping spree. After all, what’s a better excuse for purchasing makeup than business? But it’s always a struggle when multiple items in your collection go kaput and you have to replace them all at once. You end up walking out of Mall, Idumota, Tejuosho market, with a long receipt, but your bag only contains different shades of the same product. It just isn’t satisfying!

When your clients parrot tips and tricks they read/saw online
You’ll encounter some clients who are incredibly enthusiastic about makeup, but sometimes they just don’t have all the facts right. It can be frustrating if they tell you how to do your job with incorrect/unsafe methods, but keep your cool! If they’ve got something wrong, correct them and then share some insider tips and tricks straight from the horse’s mouth. You’re a professional, so it’s time to show it.

Business / Why So Many Entrepreneurs Fail by needmyservice: 5:02pm On Jul 26, 2017
“Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat. It is a temporary detour, not a dead end. Failure is something we can avoid only by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.” – Denis Waitley

Failure is a fundamental part of entrepreneurship.

Only half of new businesses survive the first five years. Move forward another five years, and two out of every three businesses have failed.

why-entrepreneurs-failIf you’re persistent, failure becomes just another lesson on the road to success. But in order to learn that lesson, you have to understand why you failed.

Or even better, you can learn why those who went before you failed and avoid their mistakes while minimizing your own.

So why do entrepreneurs fail?

That’s the question we sought to answer by seeking out 18 of the most successful entrepreneurs we know and asking them the following 3 questions:

What was the biggest failure of your career?
Why did you fail?
What did you learn from it?

We got some pretty incredibly responses, and we’re excited to share them with you today.

Let’s get started!
#1: Focusing On Things That Don’t Matter

One of the biggest mistakes new entrepreneurs make is getting distracted by things that don’t really matter, while ignoring the core pieces of building a business.

Business is ultimately just about sourcing something of value and then selling it to customers.

You can grow your Twitter account, take world-class headshots, and print a batch of stylish business cards, but at the end of the day, if you aren’t acquiring customers, you aren’t building a business.
#2: Partnering With People Who Have Similar Skillsets

Virtually every successful business person has a story to tell about how teamwork and networking propelled them forward in their careers. In fact, a survey by Salesforce found that 86% of respondents cited lack of team collaboration as a primary cause of company failures.

But as anyone who ever completed a group project in school can tell you, teamwork is only effective with the right teammates.

When you partner with the right people, you can leverage each other’s skillsets to grow more quickly and create something more valuable than you could ever accomplish alone. When you partner with the wrong people, things are guaranteed to go downhill fast.

When most people think of “bad partners”, they think of lazy, unmotivated, dishonest, or unfocused individuals, and while those qualities certainly make for a doomed partnership, sometimes the real cause of failure is much more subtle.
#3: Neglecting Your Customer Base To Chase A New Segment

Today’s global marketplace moves fast. To lead the way, you have to act quickly, adapt constantly, and persistently maintain customer growth.

Competition and innovation are rarely problems for entrepreneurs, but in the rush to the top, it can be easy to forget the fundamentals

One of the most devastating mistakes any business can make is neglecting its core customer base.
#4: Neglecting The Human Part of Business

There are a lot of intangible reasons to invest in your employees and facilitate a positive work environment. But even if we ignore the intangible and stick to the bottom line, companies with engaged employees see 233% greater customer loyalty and a 26% greater annual increase in revenue.

Simply put, your people are important.
#5: Failing To Anticipate Future Costs

Different business models have different needs. While certain models allow for slow, steady, organic growth, others require that you hit a certain critical threshold within a short timeframe.

Understanding your business model and your critical milestones are crucial to success. Failure to understand where you are, where you’re going, and what you need to get there can stagnate or even cripple your growth.

Business / Why Do So Many Internet Startups Fail Today? by needmyservice: 2:48am On Jul 08, 2017
Everyday out there in the real brick and mortar world, millions and millions of people drag themselves from the warm, warm beds, take a shower, grab a cup of coffee, and head off to their jobs as they are thinking that there has got to be an easier way to make a living. Every one of those millions and millions of people knows somebody who has quit the ‘get-up-and-go-to-work’ grind and is making a very good living by working on their personal computers from the comfort of their own homes. Working from home sounds like an ideal solution to them. Many of these dissatisfied souls will quit their jobs and plunge head-first into internet marketing with no preparation, no knowledge of what they are doing, no education, and no hope of success. Failure is their only option and they don’t even suspect. The fact is that according to many sources, more than 90% (Ninety percent) of all Internet business start-ups end in failure within the first 120 (one hundred twenty) days. Yes, you read that right. NINETY PERCENT!

Career / The Entrepreneur’s Mindset by needmyservice: 11:05am On Jul 04, 2017
There is a significant different between people who start their own companies and truly successful entrepreneurs. Many people start their own businesses but few people actually achieve the kind of success they dreamed of at the start. What is the difference between people who start up their own business and successful entrepreneurs? The answer is the entrepreneur’s mindset.
Few people actually think like true entrepreneurs. There is a difference between creating a job for yourself and creating a business. A business is something that could still be operational if you, the creator, was to leave. That means that you have been able to create a functional entity, not just a job position where you do all of the work. This is the type of mindset you must have if you want to become a truly successful entrepreneur.

Business / Moment Of Clarity With @shoepify by needmyservice: 2:44pm On Jun 07, 2017
Ecommerce has become an integral part of the today’s society. However, the hysteria that greeted its rapid rise not only in Africa, but in Nigeria, has to a large extent cooled off. Household brands like Jumia, Konga, Dealdey and HotelsNg continue to mirror the significant gains from the upsurge and the progress made over the past couple of years. Household issues like trust and technological limitations have also made it difficult for many startups to make significant inroads into a sector, deemed to be climaxing in terms of opportunities offered to new entrants.

But some new entrants aren’t bound by this narrative, and are uncovering opportunities with lucrative potential. Shoepify is one of those. Launched in September 2016, the online retail store has cornered a niche for itself and is so far proving extremely lucrative. By offering largely quality shoe products at a relatively low cost, it is managing to capture an attractive number of cost-driven online shoppers who prioritize cost whenever making shopping decisions.

In this interview, the founder of Shoepify, KOLAWOLE OMOWUNMI (A 26years old political science graduate from University of Lagos) share more on the inspiration behind the brand and why she believes it’ll blossom into a household name
