The Managing Director of Intercontinental Paints Ltd., Mr Aigbe Omoregie, on Friday advised the Federal Government to ban importation of paints as part of initiatives to build a virile economy.

Omoregie gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

He said that it was improper for the country to be importing paints when the production capacity of local manufacturers had improved.

A 57-year-old businessman, Haruna Isah, has been sentenced to 3 months imprisonment in prison for for assault, NAN reports.

Isah of Utako village, Abuja, was convicted on a charge of causing grievous hurt. He pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.

The Judge, Sadiq Abubakar, however, gave the convict an option of fine of N10, 000, and said that it was intended to serve as a deterrent to others.

The Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme has produced another 59 cadets, who graduated from the Liverpool John Moores University, United Kingdom.

The programme is part of the Capacity Building initiative of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency.

NIMASA Head of Corporate Communications, Mr Isichei Osamgbi, in a statement on Thursday said 1,343 graduates have been produced by the scheme since its inception.

The graduates were produced from institutions in UK, Egypt, Romania and Philippines.
