FBN HOLDINGS, FBNBANK GHANA SEEK IMPROVED BUSINESS RELATIONSHIP WITH GHANA

The Group Board Chairman of FBN Holdings Plc, Dr. Oba Otudeko and Directors of FBN Holdings, FirstBank of Nigeria Limited and FBNBank Ghana Limited, recently paid a courtesy call on the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa-Akufo-Addo in Accra.

The visit was to show appreciation to the Ghanaian President and thank him for participating in First Bank of Nigeria Limited’s 125th-anniversary activities held earlier this year.

According to a statement from the bank, the visit was also to update the president on some recent investment activities of the Group.

Otudeko assured President Akufo-Addo that FBNHoldings believes in the Ghanaian economy. This, he said was evidenced by the recapitalisation of FBNBank Ghana by its parent bank, First Bank of Nigeria Limited.

He pointed out that the Group’s investment of $100 million was well above the new minimum capital requirement set by the Bank of Ghana into its Ghana operation.

The FBNHoldings Group Board Chairman added that the bank’s confidence in the Ghanaian economy and the talent of Ghanaians had resulted in the appointment of Victor Yaw Asante as the first Ghanaian Managing Director of FBNBank Ghana Limited.

Otudeko lauded the President of Ghana for giving the youth opportunities to serve in his government, saying it will prepare them to take over the leadership of Ghana in the near future. He congratulated the President on the choice of Ghana as host of the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement, saying that it must have taken significant effort to bring this to Ghana.

CLOSING THE GAP IN SOCIAL INEQUALITY WITH EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP
For most developed countries, the youths remain an important focus in areas such as economic development, sustainability and nation building. When organisations and the government drive conversations and activities around social investments, these discourse are usually focused on empowering young people as they hold the power to drive growth across all levels of the economy both locally and internationally.

In a country like Nigeria, with lots of liquid resources and just about 2.11 trillion Naira in circulation as at May 2019 according to the CBN, the standard of living for the average citizen does not exactly reflect the volume of Nigeria’s asset. There is an existing gap in connecting education, employment and entrepreneurship within the youths, creating a great layer of social inequality.

Globally, more than 200 million young people are either unemployed, or they have jobs, but continue to live in poverty due to low income. This social and economic inequality is a challenge shared by many countries. Infact, it is estimated that 1% of the world’s population will own two thirds of its wealth. This level of inequality stifles growth and creates disharmony. It significantly affects disadvantaged young people who often can’t access the skills and opportunities needed to close this income gap.

PULISIC GUNNING FOR FIRST START AS AJAX STORM STAMFORD BRIDGE TONIGHT
Ajax will travel to Stamford Bridge this evening seeking revenge in their
UEFA Champions League clash in London.
The game will be the first time this season USA Captain and talisman, Christian Pulisic is set to start in Europe’s top club competition with his impact in recent weeks impossible for Frank Lampard to ignore any longer.

The fortnight that changed the course of the 21-year-old’s first season in England began in the Champions League against Ajax, when he came off the bench to set up Michy Batshuayi’s winner at the Johan Cruyff Arena and inflict a first defeat since May on the Dutch champions.

“If he continues doing that sort of thing then the goals will rack up,” said Lampard after Pulisic followed up his hat-trick with a predatory goal from close range at Watford. “His general performance was top as well.”Victory at Vicarage Road saw Chelsea equal a club record for seven straight away wins with Lampard earning plaudits for his ability to quickly turn the negativity of a summer transfer ban and the loss of Eden Hazard into a buoyant atmosphere at the Bridge.

Pulisic was the one big-money arrival. Chelsea anticipated both the 12-month ban on signing players and Hazard’s departure to Real Madrid by completing his signing for £58 million ($75 million) in January before being loaned back to Borussia Dortmund for the second half of last season.

However, that move left the Pennsylvanian in limbo in Germany with his time at Dortmund coming to an end and the rise of English wonder-kid Jadon Sancho limiting his first-team appearances.
A move to London was meant to be a fresh start, but after a start as Chelsea lost the Uefa Super Cup to Liverpool on penalties in August, Pulisic soon found himself behind Willian, Pedro Rodriguez and Callum Hudson-Odoi in the battle for places on the wings of Lampard’s three-man attack.

He said further, “The PDP cautions the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to note that the deployment of officials with known integrity issues is capable of triggering a crisis and jeopardizing the credibility of the electoral process.”

Tottenham began their European campaign with a draw at Olympiacos before being comprehensively beaten 7-2 in London by Bayern Munich. They were also held to a 1-1 draw by bottom-of-the-table Watford in the Premier League at the weekend.

“Our performance is not as good as we can deliver,” Pochettino told reporters. “Of course we need to improve. On the other side, there are all of the rumors that happen at any club when you don’t win but it doesn’t mean they’re true.

“I understand this business. I’m 47 – why do you think I don’t have grey hair? Because I don’t pay attention to any of this. I only pay attention that we need to improve our performances.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea threatened again Thursday to resume nuclear and long-range missile tests, accusing the U.S. of having instigated some members of the U.N. Security Council to condemn its recent weapons tests.

The victory against Korea yesterday would have been meaningless if Tunisia with a one win against Iran had succeeded against Puerto Rico. The North Africans lost 67-64 against Puerto Rico to give Nigeria a lifeline in the race to grabbing the sole ticket for the continent.

Despite Nigeria missing out of podium placement at the World Cup, the classification games in Round 17-32 will determine which country qualifies for China amongst the five African teams at...............

Largest Solar Plant In Africa Opens In Bayero University Kano

VP says it shows progress under Buhari administration’s Next Level road map.

Solar power projects being commissioned under the Energizing Education Programme of the Buhari administration is a testament to the fulfilment of its Next Level agenda, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

Prof. Osinbajo stated this on Tuesday in Kano State, where he commissioned the 7.1MW solar hybrid power plant in Bayero University Kano, which is the largest off-grid solar hybrid power plant in Africa.

The Vice President further said the solar hybrid power plant was ‘just one touchpoint of progress and impact within this Administration’s Next Level agenda. The Federal Government is committed to powering Nigeria; one university, one market, one community at a time.”

This is the second solar plant to be commissioned by the Vice President within a period of about one month, following the first one in August – a 2.8 MW decentralized solar hybrid power plant at……………………………….

Moghalu: Why Nigeria Remains Poor

A former Central Bank of Nigeria Deputy Governor and 2019 Presidential candidate of the Young Progressive Party, Prof. Kingsley Chiedu Moghalu, in this interview on Arise Television, spoke about factors that have continued to obstruct the country’s growth. Hamid Ayodeji brings the excerpts:

What is your agenda for the ministers that were recently sworn-in?

My view is that poverty is the overriding reality in our country today. Our economy is the biggest problem we are facing which generates several other problems including security problems. President Buhari, while inaugurating his ministers did indicate his awareness of this problem. He talked a lot about poverty and so there is a need for the ministers to address the needs of the citizens. The question is, beyond that rhetorical is the cabinet the type that can actually address the economy effectively? I would say it is a good thing he has done by giving the ministers a mandate. So,……………………….

ASUU VS FUOYE: Matters Arising

Recently, a piece entitled: “Again, ASUU alleges corruption, mismanagement, tyranny in FUOYE’, was published in one of the national newspapers. Unfortunately, the write-up in question attacked, without caution, the office and person of the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Prof. Kayode Soremekun.

Thousands of informed and rational readers, expectant of a balanced article, perhaps, would have consumed the piece. Therefore, this piece is to set the records straight.

First, the piece misinformed the public that FUOYE’s local chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities had again cried out against what the writer mischievously alleged as the “impunity and administrative recklessness” of the institution’s management. The wonder here is: Which local body of ASUU was the writer referring to? This is because at the moment, ASUU in FUOYE is in disarray. There are now, in fact, several splinter groups and some of them are so disillusioned that they have…………………………

Berlin zoo witnesses rare birth of panda twin

Berlin zoo said Monday its resident panda Meng Meng had delivered twins, as it voiced delight at the first such births in the country.
“Meng Meng became a mom – twice! We are so happy, we are speechless,” the zoo said on Twitter, also posting a video of the new mother guiding one of her pink babies to feed.

The births are particularly rare as it is notoriously hard to breed pandas.
The panda delivered its first cub on Saturday evening. About an hour later, a second baby was born.

“Meng Meng and her two cubs coped well with the birth and are all in good health,” zoo director Andreas Knieriem said.
At birth, the pink cubs, with their fine white down and disproportionately long tails, bear…….

Man arrested for infecting teenager with HIV released

The police in Rivers State have released a 75-year-old man, Shedrack Ejinwo, arrested last week for allegedly defiling a 14-year-old girl at Kendox Medical Services, where he received treatment as an HIV patient.

A Delta-based human rights activist, Harrison Gwamnishu, who confirmed the release of the suspect in a telephone interview with our correspondent, said Ejinwo entered into an out-of-court settlement with the father of the victim, Rufus Felix, to pay N370,000 monthly until February 2020.

Gwamnishu, who is the Director-General, Behind Bars Rights Foundation, claimed the victim was persuaded by the wife of the medical director of the clinic, where she worked as a salesgirl, to keep the rape a secret and placed on treatment

He said, “When that (rape) happened, they placed the girl on drugs for prevention of the virus. So, they opened a card for the girl at the hospital. The man has been released from custody based on………

Red Wine Could Be Good For Digestive System

Scientists at King’s College London have found that red wine drinkers have a greater diversity of bacteria in their digestive tracts, a marker of gastrointestinal wellbeing, than those who drink other alcohol.

Their paper, published in the journal Gastroenterology on Wednesday, explored the effects of beer, cider, wine and spirits on the population of microorganisms in the gut — the “microbiome” — and other health indicators in 916 female twins in the UK.

Red wine was linked to the greatest positive impact on gut health — and it was also associated with lower levels of obesity and “bad” cholesterol. There were no such associations for beer, cider or spirits, but a minor effect linked to white wine.

Lead author Caroline Le Roy told AFP that while there had been some previous research on animals and in lab experiments that showed …………..

Business / Apple Sheds $44bn Market Value by Newsbreakers: 2:44pm On Aug 26, 2019
The world’s most influential consumer electronics company shed 44 billion dollars of market value after a pair of pronouncements from Beijing and Washington cast a spotlight on its massive Chinese production base, from which almost all of the world’s iPhones are made.

U.S. President Donald Trump this weekend “ordered” American companies to immediately start looking for alternatives to manufacturing in China, which is something Apple is thoroughly unprepared for, according to analyst David Ives of Wedbush Securities Inc.

“In a best-case scenario,” says Ives, Apple “would be able to move away 5%-7 per cent of iPhone production out of China” over the course of 18 months.

The company would require three years to move 20 per cent out, he adds, which is still…..

U.S. Marks 400th Anniversary Of Slave Ship Arrival

400 years ago, a ship carrying enslaved Africans arrived in Point Comfort on the shores of Virginia. The landing marked the beginning of slavery in British North America, forever transforming the modern world.

Thousands of people gathered at that same port this weekend in what is now Hampton, Virginia, to honor those Africans, who were instrumental to the founding of the United States.

“It marks the beginning of the foundation of this nation, of which slavery is deeply embedded,” said Asia Leeds, co-director of African diaspora studies at Spelman College. “So we have the beginnings of not just US governing systems, right? They emerge out of this colonial history. But also the foundation of American wealth.”
