Politics / Office Of The Vice President Osinbajo Press Release by Newsbreakers: 8:15pm On Jun 09, 2020
FG IMPROVING SMALL BUSINESSES TO UPLIFT ORDINARY NIGERIANS - OSINBAJO
Commissioning of a 200,000 capacity Yam Storage Facility in Benue

Improving the working and trading environment for small and medium-sized businesses through Shared Facilities, MSMES Clinics and other government interventions are critical parts of the Federal Government's drive towards supporting Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the country, while uplifting the lives of ordinary Nigerians, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

The Vice President stated this on Tuesday during the virtual commissioning and handing over of the 200,000-capacity Yam Storage Facility at the Zaki Biam International Yam Market in Benue State.

Prof. Osinbajo further noted that post-harvest losses due to poor storage facilities for the nation's agriculture produce would be a thing of the past if more storage and processing facilities like the new storage facility in Benue State are established around the country.

The 200,000-capacity Yam Storage Facility is part of the National MSMEs' Shared Facility Scheme being implemented by the Federal Government under the National MSMEs Clinics put in place by the Buhari administration.

The Zaki Biam Yam market is said to account for about 70% of yams cultivated in the country, with over 200 trucks loading 2 million tubers of yams weekly from the state renowned as the nation's food basket.

Prof. Osinbajo noted that, despite this, "the market has had very little storage capacity and its infrastructural facilities are way behind its capacity and the size of commerce that goes on here daily."

According to Belgian goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, Eden Hazard has recovered from his injury and is better than ever. His teammate, Thibaut Courtois, provided an update on his fitness. "Hazard is just fine. The rhythm he has is surprising, but we have to go bit by bit. We can't expect him to be on his top form without playing. I think he's in shape and we'll need him to fight for the title."

Health / Abia State Records Infection Spike As NCDC Announces 260 New Cases by Newsbreakers: 6:51am On Jun 08, 2020
Nobody could have predicted this. Abia state, a state that had recorded just 16 confirmed cases up until this point, topped the COVID-19 table. Not only did they displace Lagos from the top spot, but they also created a personal record. Abia state recorded a 400% increase in cases with 67 confirmed COVID-19 infections yesterday.

The Nigeria Center for Diseases Control, NCDC, announced 260 new cases of COVID-19 in Nigeria yesterday evening. This moved the total number of cases to 12,486 from 19 different states.

There were a few surprises which include; Abia state topping the table, Lagos state dropping to third, Oyo state recording no case, among others.

Health / COVID-19: Lagos State Loses Top Spot by Newsbreakers: 6:26am On Jun 08, 2020
Shocking news! Lagos state dropped down the daily COVID-19 infection table. No, they are not even second on the table. Abia state topped the table yesterday night with a personal record of 67 new cases while Lagos recorded just 38 cases.

The NCDC announcements have been predictable for the last few weeks but last night deviated from the norm. We have grown used to Lagos state recording over 100 new cases per day and they have been rightly tagged the COVID-19 infection capital. However, with just 38 new cases recorded yesterday and a drop to third on the 24 hours' table behind Abia and FCT, we can't help but wonder if this is a sign of things to come.

Some of the reasons Lagos state has been ahead of the pack are due to the superior testing capacity, population congestion in the state, the presence of an international airport among others. Lagos has been the frontrunner in terms of preparedness, handling, and resources to tackle the virus. So, imagine our surprise that it lost its spot to Abia state; a state with significantly fewer resources in comparison.

Presidency Reviews Approved 2020 Budget

The presidency has set up a committee to scrutinise the 2020 Appropriation Bill passed by the National Assembly, charging it to look critically into the differentials between the figure submitted by President Muhammadu Buhari and the one approved by the legislature, and advise the president on assent, THISDAY learnt last night.

The National Assembly had on December 5, passed N10.59 trillion, N264 billion more than the N10.33 trillion estimates submitted for 2020 by the president in October.
This differential, a reliable source told THISDAY, would be thoroughly scrutinised by the committee, before presidential assent.

The budget was last Thursday transmitted to the president for assent.
Although there is pressure on the president to give assent because of the administration’s desire to return to the January-to-December fiscal calendar, Buhari is said to be insistent on ensuring that his core financial objectives are not distorted by the fresh insertions, which are already causing disquiet in the Senate.

“The president wants to ensure that the projects inserted conform to his overall fiscal objectives,” a source told THISDAY, saying the exercise would not necessarily lead to the defeat of the desire to return to January-to-December budget cycle.

U.S. Resumes Aid To Lebanese Military

An official on Monday confirmed that the U.S. has resumed its aid to the Lebanese military worth some 105 million dollars.

A State Department official confirmed the information saying there had been unspecified disagreements about the efficacy of the assistance.

However, Concerns mounted on Capitol Hill that the delay in the congressionally mandated aid package would hurt efforts to counter Islamist extremists in the Middle East and potentially be a boost to U.S rivals, including Iran.

The freeze on the aid came as Lebanon was rocked by protests against the government over financial mismanagement.

The entire process of freezing the aid for months was shrouded in secrecy and unclear concerns.

It came as Democrats in the House of Representatives launched an impeachment inquiry against U.S. President Donald Trump.

Health / Porn Can Kill Your Ability To Get Erection/orgasm With Real Partner -scientist by Newsbreakers: 2:38pm On Nov 29, 2019
Contrary to what many people love to believe, watching porn can actually make you develop erectile dysfunction, rewire your brain to start functioning like that of a child and lead ultimately to a mental breakdown.

Porn consumption can kill your ability to get erection or orgasm with a real-life partner!

These are some of the findings of a neuroscience PhD student and researcher at Canada’s Université Laval, Rachel Anne Barr, who warns that people who regularly watch adult entertainment — a.k.a, pornography — often develop damage to the brain region (prefrontal cortex) that controls morality, willpower and impulse.

The prefrontal cortex region is, crucially, one that does not fully develop until adulthood, she notes.

According to the researcher, watching porn not only erodes that important region of the brain, it also rewires it into a childish state.

K-pop Sentenced to 6 Years in Jail for Rape, Sharing Videos

A South Korean court sentenced a K-pop musician to six years in prison on Friday for raping a woman and distributing a video capturing the act in a case that drew attention to the darker side of the country’s lucrative entertainment industry.

Jung Joon-young, 30, was arrested in March. Choi Jong-hoon, 30, a former member of South Korean boy band FT Island, was also sentenced to five years in prison for the rape of the woman.

Both were members of online chat groups that shared secret sex tapes and made jokes about drugging and raping women, the Seoul Central District Court said.

Jung’s conviction also includes the illegal distribution of other videos he took secretly while having sex with women.

The identities of the victims were suppressed to protect their privacy.

The court also sentenced each man to 80 hours in “sexual violence treatment” education.

Ibrahimovic Files ‘Fate Crime’ Complaint After House, Statue Vandalised

Swedish footballer Zlatan Ibrahimovic Thursday filed a “hate crime” complaint Thursday after being the target of vandalism and racists threats, police said, a day after the star announced his part ownership in football club Hammarby.

A statue of the player in Malmo was attacked with fire and paint while the word “Judas” was daubed across the front door of his residence in Stockholm.

The perpetrators of the threatening acts have not been identified but “Ibra” angered fans of Malmo FF (MFF) — the club where he started his professional career in 1999 — on Wednesday when he announced he had bought a share in rival club Hammarby.

In Malmo, several people, most of them wearing hoods, vandalised a statue of Ibrahimovic that was unveiled just two months ago. Near the monument, they wrote the words “Cigani do” (“Gypsy” in Bosnian, and “die” in Swedish) in spray paint.

Born in Malmo, Ibrahimovic is the son of a Bosnian father and Croatian mother.

Videos posted on social media showed masked people lighting fires and aiming them at the statue. There was no significant damage and a protective barrier has since been put up around it.

“An investigation has been opened into vandalism and threats with suspected hate crime motive. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the plaintiff,” a police spokesman told AFP.

Earlier on Wednesday, angry supporters had slipped a toilet seat on to one of the statue’s arms.

Hammarby, a Stockholm-based team playing alongside MFF in Sweden’s top league, announced Wednesday morning that Ibrahimovic had bought around 25 percent of the shares in the club.

“He’s turned his back on the city and what made him who he is,” Kaveh Hosseinpour, vice-president of the MFF supporters’ club, told broadcaster TV4.

At noon on Thursday, nearly 7,000 people had signed an online petition calling for the immediate removal of his statue in Malmo.

“How could you do this to us?” one outraged signatory wrote while another proclaimed that “everything can’t just be about money”.
