In order to complete the Ajaokuta-Abuja-Kano pipeline, the Infrastructure and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), Infrastructure Bank of China, and China Export Credit Agency (SINOSURE), which were expected to contribute $2.38 billion, or 85% of the project’s total cost, withdrew. As a result, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has already spent over $1.1 billion.

The Group Chief Executive Officer of the NNPCL, Mele Kyari, confirmed an earlier exclusive report on the AKK project by The Guardian about the withdrawal of the initial financiers as a result of the contract’s inflation by 570 percent and said the national oil company would continue to finance the project despite the fraud allegations.

Politics / Advice For Incoming President by newsc: 10:27am On Apr 17, 2023
Congratulations on attaining your life ambition of becoming the president of a United Nigeria. Always viewed with caution those who had the office thrust upon them. A lack of preparation for the office affects their performance. Good to know you desired this office hence you should be better positioned for the office. Your predecessor also coveted the office but did not use the years prior to taking office to prepare and deliver the maximum good for the maximum number. The good he delivered was for a minority as he was busy herding cows in his doldrums years.

That you are psychologically prepared doesn’t guarantee success as Nigerian reality sets in and rubber hits the road. What is this Nigerian reality? Some say standard economic theories do not work in Nigeria, I beg to differ. Unorthodox economic policies have been thrust on us for last eight years and the non-result is glaring. Emulating economic policies that delivered for other peoples is a good place to start rather than believing it would not work for Nigeria.

Politics / May 29th: Where Next Nigeria by newsc: 10:15am On Apr 17, 2023
Now, Nigeria is without form and void. Darkness covers the face of the deep and the unquiet Spirit is hovering over the land. Africa’s most populous country is at a fresh dangerous crossroads. At the beginning when darkness covered the earth, God said: ‘’Let there be Light,’’ and there was light. Now, Nigeria needs a leader who will command light to outshine the country’s darkness and exorcise the unquiet spirit. Once a country returns to factory-reset mode or Hobbes’s state of nature: Optimism, Peace and Hope disappear, none of our important human needs is reliably realizable in such a milieu.
Indeed, the perfect storm is already gathering, killer herdsmen have since cut short their vacation, they visited an IDP camp in Benue state and massacred over 128 internally displaced people mostly pregnant women and children recently, before zooming off to Sokoto, they had a stopover in Kaduna where reckless kidnapping and killings took place...

Politics / Universal Health Coverage: Lessons From Sokoto State by newsc: 12:21pm On Apr 13, 2023
Some states are not responding badly on the need to extend Universal Health Coverage to its citizens. It is cheering news to note that national laws and policies that support the right to health of the citizens are being domesticated in most states. One of such law and policy is the establishment of the Mandatory Health Insurance scheme and the provision of the one percent Consolidated Revenue Fund for the Basic Health Care Provision Fund. The domestication of these laws and policy is the only vehicle to which Universal Health Coverage can be attained. Using Sokoto State as case study for this write-up, The Sokoto state Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (SOCHEMA) was established by Law No.2 of 2018 to provide affordable, accessible and equitable healthcare services to all residents of Sokoto State. Politics / Dousing Political Tension In The Land by newsc: 9:11am On Apr 11, 2023
Elections everywhere tend to be divisive. This is because mobilization of support hinges on a successful creation of a simplistic binary of ‘we-versus-them’ dichotomy, which is then nourished by all manner of scaremongering. This is why political campaigns are often likened to wars without weapons. In Africa, it is even more so where politicians seem to have taken literally the exultations by Kwame Nkrumah, a pioneering pan-Africanist and Ghana’s independence leader (1957-1966), to seek first the political kingdom and everything else would be added unto them.

In Africa, the allure of political office is exceeding high. Apart from being perhaps the quickest means to personal material accumulation, there is a pervasive fear that the group that captures state power could use it to privilege its in-group and disadvantage others. For these, electoral competitions tend to be especially anarchic, deepening existing fault lines and even creating new ones. In countries like ours where the basis of nationhood remains highly contested, and where several groups have institutionalized memories of hurt, electoral contests often re-open old wounds that raise doubts about the basis of togetherness. This therefore makes it imperative that the task of healing and reconciliation is prioritised after each election.

Politics / Debt Trap And Incoming Administrations by newsc: 12:14pm On Apr 04, 2023
It is no longer news that some of the first-term governors-elect will face many months of unpaid workers’ salaries and mounting pension liabilities, as well as agitation for the implementation of the nationally agreed minimum wage, rising inflation, escalating prices of goods and services, and dwindling purchasing power. These incoming governors, about seventeen of them, according to reports will have a difficult time boosting the economies of their individual states because they will take over at least N2.1 trillion in domestic debt and $1.9 billion in foreign debt from their predecessors.

It is equally a common knowledge that in January 2023, Patience Oniha, Director general, Debt Management Office (DMO), while fielding questions from journalists at the public presentation and breakdown of the highlights of the 2023 appropriation act in Abuja, noted that the incoming Federal Government would inherit about N77 trillion as debt by the time President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure ends in May.

Politics / Yoruba United Nation: The Most Civilized Ethnic Group In The World by newsc: 9:40am On Mar 31, 2023
Scholars throughout the world that have studied the Yoruba Culture and Religion have been intrigued by the ancient history of YORUBA of West Africa. German explorer Leo Frobenius came across some sculpted bronze heads and terracotta figures in Ile-Ife, convinced he had discovered remains of the mythical lost city of Atlantis. Beyond the way Yoruba accommodate other religions and cultures without giving up their own, they have surprised other scholars, so much that doctoral students must be careful how they present dissertations for approval. You may see within the same family a Reverend father, a respectable Imam and a prominent Babalawo. This is a volatile mixture in most cultures.

The disappearing glory of Yoruba civilization, culture and esteemed blood in a country deluged with money but only abject poverty to show for it must be reversed. This must be through intensive workshops by Think-tank reorientation groups at home and Diaspora; not by political moneybags. These Yoruba speaking groups, though massively located in Western Nigeria, are all over West Africa, Brazil, Cuba in Central and Southern America. They can be identified by their religion, language, Santeria and ORIKI. Some Yoruba artifacts unveiled at Iwo Eleru near their historical home of Ile-Ife, dated as far back às 10,000 B.C....
