Politics / No Other President Can Be As Irresponsible As The Nigerian President, Says Kukah by Newshelm: 8:32am On Oct 06, 2018
The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah has said that there is a very high tendency for any Nigerian President to be irresponsible due to the extent of power he wields.

He stated this in his address during the annual lecture at the Ulefunta/Oyemekun festival in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Friday. According to Kukah, no President in the world could boast of the kind of power available to the Nigerian President.

In his words: “No President in the world has the kind of power the Nigerian president has and as such, no President in the world can be as irresponsible as the Nigerian President. His power is so much that he can give oil bloc to his girlfriend and many others.

You thus can’t be a man of honour and live in a country like Nigeria and not be angry. What is the problem? It is the dilemma of leadership. In America, there are basic expectations of what a President should be. For instance, he must have gone through Harvard as an institution, he must have language and track record, not even wealth.

You can’t surprise the system. Here in Nigeria, a local government Chairman wants to be Governor; the Governor wants to be President and the President doesn’t want to go! Many states have two governors representing them at the National Assembly.

Governors have control and monopoly of resources of state and they use same resources to oppress them.”

The bishop also lamented the lack of loyalty on the part of citizens, saying: “In Nigeria, it is not a question of looking for trouble because trouble is already here. The Nigerian state has no capacity to protect itself and there is no loyalty to Nigeria from its citizens but to those who help individuals to get to positions in the system.”

He, however, cited two leaders he thinks are models for good leadership. He said: “Awolowo, for his major quintessential evidence as somebody who already figured out what he would do with power if he got it. He understood the building blocks for an egalitarian society. Aminu Kano single-handedly took on the feudal class in northern society and had a deep understanding of society, even as he textually talked about a free society in a way and manner that didn’t offend religion”.

“We have to understand the building blocks of society which is not too different from the rules of building a house. A good society is not different from the building blocks of society. When a building collapses, it didn’t collapse in a day. It began to collapse a long time ago. For us to build a good society, we have to have eyes that monitor the needs, growth and development and feelings of that society. Then you can be sure of the quality of that society.”

Politics / #osundecides2018: INEC Denies Releasing Uncollected Pvcs by Newshelm: 10:56am On Sep 25, 2018
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has described as irresponsible and baseless, the allegation that uncollected Permanent Voter Cards were being released ahead of the Osun State Governorship rerun election.

Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman dismissed the allegation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.

Oyekanmi asked the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), which made the allegation, to provide the proof.
READ ALSO Dino Melaye escaped ran into bush after attack, not kidnapped, says media aide

“It is highly irresponsible of the CUPP to make a wild, unsubstantiated allegation such as this at this time.

“What exactly is their motive? The media should ask the CUPP to provide concrete proof about this allegation.

“INEC has conducted 191 different types of elections, including six governorship elections since 2015.

“If the Commission did not manipulate any of these elections, why will it do so now with the Osun Governorship election?

“The CUPP is advised to engage in patriotic actions rather than sowing discord at a time like this.”

The CUPP in a statement issued by its spokesman, Ikenga Ugochinyere alleged that credible intelligence revealed that some INEC officers were releasing uncollected PVC to the desperate politicians in Osun to use imported voters to vote at the rerun.

Ugochinyere also alleged that a senior INEC staff had refused to release the official list of people who have collected PVC’s at the seven polling units where rerun election would be held.

“We have it on good authority that less than 1000 registered voters have collected PVC’s out of the 3,498.

“This means that less than 1000 persons are to participate in the actual voting. We demand that INEC immediately release this list.”

He added that the plot was part of a move to use incidence form to vote knowing that the finger prints of those with the hijacked uncollected PVC can’t be read by the Smart Card Reader.

Politics / PHOTOS: Buhari Approves N43bn For Ex-nigeria Airways Workers, ASUU by Newshelm: 5:08pm On Sep 24, 2018
More than 15 years after the liquidation of Nigeria Airways, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the immediate release of N22.68 billion for settlement of the retirement benefits of ex-workers of the defunct airline.

The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, on Monday said the president also approved the release of another N20 billion as ‘revitalisation’ fund of public universities based the request by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Ahmed who made the announcement through a series of tweets with a her personal Tweeter handle, @ZShamsuna, said the N22.68 billion was 50 per cent of the total entitlement of N45.3 billion agreed for the liquidated former airline workers.

The initial submission for the retirement benefits of the workers was about N78 billion. But, the N45.3 billion was arrived at following the verification exercise conducted by the presidential initiative on continuous audit (PICA) in conjunction with other interest groups.

The minister said the verification was conducted in line with the conditions of service offered the former staff by Nigeria Airways Limited in liquidation and other extant rules and regulations.

Following the long delay in the payment of the retirement benefits after the liquidation of Nigeria Airways Limited, Ahmed said many of the ex-workers went through untold hardship.

“This unfortunate situation cannot be allowed to continue under a responsible administration,” she said.

To ensure the presidential directive on the payment of the entitlement was duly implemented, she said a committee has been constituted headed by the secretary of PICA, MK Dikwa, to handle the exercise.

Other members of the committee include representatives of the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation; Office of the Accountant General of the Federation; Ministry of Aviation; Federal Ministry of Finance; Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE); Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD); Budget Office of the Federation and Union of Ex-Workers of Nigeria Airways Limited (in liquidation).

This committee is expected to physically verify the claims of pensioners and relevant next-of-kins before the release of funds to the approved beneficiaries.
Other modalities will be worked out by the committee, to ensure speedy payment, transparency and integrity of the process, it was learnt.

On the N20 billion approved for the revitalisation of public universities, Ahmed recalled the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the federal government and ASUU in 2013 on the need to improve funding for staff welfare and provision of critical infrastructure.

Despite certain challenges, including shortage of revenue and other reasons, which affected the implementation of the bilateral agreement, the Finance Minister said the president was determined to revitalise public universities and ensure their smooth running.

She said the approval of N20 billion for immediate release for public universities through the revitalisation scheme was part of that determination.

The minister said the funds would be released to beneficiary universities in line with the established criteria used by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Progress in the implementation of the presidential directive, she said, would be monitored with a view to resolving emerging issues and keeping the government’s promises to relevant interest groups.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has said its members will commence nationwide strike alongside civil society organisations on September 26 unless the tripartite committee completes its assignment on the new minimum wage.

NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, made the declaration on Wednesday after a National Executive Council meeting.

“NEC has resolved that at the expiration of the 14 days industrial action notice issued to the federal government over the new minimum wage issue, and the demand of the organised labour was not met, NEC has given NAC and the leadership of organised labour the power to declare appropriate industrial action or any action it deems necessary.

The Jigawa Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said it had destroyed 6.21 tonnes of assorted drugs in the state.

Joshephine Obi, the agency’s Commander in the state who confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Tuesday, said the exercise took place on Sept. 6 in Dutse.

Obi said the drugs were recovered from drug offenders already prosecuted and convicted.

She added that the destruction of drugs by burning was in compliance with the order of the Presiding Judge of the Federal High Court, Dutse.

The commander added that from 2013, the command had arrrsted 3,608 suspects and seized 8.26 tonnes of various types of exhibits.

According to her, a total of 753 persons were also convicted and sentenced to various jail terms.

“We’ve also given thousand of enlightment lectures as well as basic counselling to thousands of illcit drug users within the period under review.

“Every arrested drug user is put through basic counselling intervention,” the commander said.

Obi further warned that the command would not condone drug abuse and trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances in the state.

“Therefore we expect people to be inspired to contribute their quota to get rid of drug abuse which is a dream and joy-killer, crime booster, a destroyer of health and lives, divider of familes, thief of future of promising youths, source of economic distruption and social insecurity,” she added.

She stated that the command, with support from the state government and other sister agencies, had been working to fulfil its two-fold mandate in the state towards the reduction of the supply and demand for illicit narcotic and psychotropic substances.

The commander further appealed to the public to get involved in the sensitization of families and communities against illicit drug trafficking and abuse.

Obi, who commended the state government, local councils, religous leaders and traditional rulers for their unflinching spport to the agency, appealed for more support especially in the areas of provision of operational vehicles and rehabilitation centre.

“We also thank everyone that contributed to the withdrawal of all these drugs from the society, all commanders and officers who have put in their best in the drug war in the state through the years and our sister agencies, especially the Police and NSCDC and other patrotic Nigerians,” Obi said.

The mouthwatering deal is worth Millions of Dollars.

Politics / 2019: I Will End Tribal, Religious Killings In Nigeria – Dankwambo by Newshelm: 7:17pm On Sep 17, 2018
Gombe state governor and Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential aspirant, Dr. Ibrahim Dankwambo, has expressed determination to end all forms of tribal and religious killings across the country, if elected president in 2019.

Dankwambo disclosed this in a statement signed by Dr Ayoade Adewopo, Director of Media and Publicity of his campaign organisation in Abuja, on Monday.

The governor sympathised with the victims of a recent attack in Gon, Nzumosu, Bolki, Nyanga and Bukuto villages in Numan LGA of Adamawa state, where a Lutheran priest and 51 other were reportedly killed.

He said that if given the mandate to rule Nigeria in 2019, the holistic approach he used in handling security issues in his Gombe home state would be replicated nationwide.

“I will end tribal and religious killings as president. I have had the privilege through good leadership to keep Gombe state a safe haven for all its citizens and residents.

“The same will be replicated in Nigeria, as a whole if I am given the opportunity to become the Chief Security Officer, the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces and president of the country.

“Today, I emphatise with the governor and the good people of Adamawa state over the nonsensical killings by terrorists of a Lutheran priest and 51 others in Gon, Nzumosu, Bolki, Nyanga and Bukuto villages in Numan LGA, Adamawa state.

“Together we must restore Nigeria’’ he stated.

Politics / Presidency Wants HSBC To Return Nigerian Stolen Assets by Newshelm: 7:53pm On Sep 15, 2018
The Presidency wishes to make clear to all Nigerians, and particularly the global banking giant HSBC which said the second term of President Muhammadu Buhari would stunt the economy, that what killed Nigeria’s economy in the past was the unbridled looting of state resources by leaders, the type which was actively supported by HSBC.

A bank that soiled its hand with ‘‘millions of US dollars yet-to-be-recovered Abacha loot’’ and continued until a few months ago to shield the stolen funds of one of the leaders of the Nigerian Senate has no moral right whatsoever to project that a “second term for Mr. Buhari raises the risk of limited economic progress and further fiscal deterioration.”

Rather, we ask them to heed President Buhari’s constant refrain: return our stolen assets, then see how well we will do.

From the facts available to our investigation agencies, HSBC’s put down on President Buhari is no more than an expression of frustration over the administration’s measures put in place which has abolished grand corruption, the type which this bank thrives on in many countries.
They may also just be out to discredit the President out of the fear of sanctions and fines following the national assets that are stolen.
With the coming of President Buhari, it is not a secret that corruption, corrupt individuals, banks and other corporate entities that aided corrupt practices are under investigation for various offenses.

For many of them, including their friends in the media, they would rather have President Buhari out of their way, for business as usual to return.
Our investigation agencies believe that HSBC had laundered more than USD 100,000,000 for the late General Sani Abacha in Jersey, Paris, London and Geneva.

Among these accounts on the records are: AC: S-104460 HSBC Fund Admin Ltd. Jersey ($12,000,000); AC 37060762 HSBC Life (Europe), U.K ($20,000,000) and AC: 38175076 HSBC Bank Plc. U.K ($1,600,000).
The bank is also suspected in the laundering of proceeds of corruption involving more than 50 other Nigerians, including a serving Senator as earlier indicated.

In a book, “Secrecy World: Inside the Panama Papers Investigation”, published in 2017, Jack Bernstein told the story of global money laundering highlighting the unenviable place of the HSBC.

This is a bank that states and federal authorities in the U.S. forced to pay $1.92 billion to settle charges of money laundering; fined $1.2 billion in Hong Kong for “systemic deficiencies” in bond sales and was made to pay $100 million in currency rigging settlement as reported by The Telegraph of 18th January, 2018.

Crime / 3 Women Get 45 Days Imprisonment For Fighting In Abuja by Newshelm: 5:05pm On Sep 14, 2018
A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Friday sentenced three women to 45 days imprisonment for fighting and biting themselves in public.

The convicts, Amina Ishaq, 22, Praise Bassey, 29 and Mariam Soliu, 23, all of Paipe Village, Abuja, were arraigned on a two-count charge of disturbing public peace and causing harm.

The judge, Alhaji Inuwa Maiwada, however, gave the convicts an option to pay N3,000 fine each.

Maiwada advised them to live and maintain peace among themselves, saying the punishment would serve as deterrent to other would-be offenders.

The convicts had admitted committing the offence and urged the court to temper justice with mercy.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Ifeoma Ukagha, had told the court that after the convicts finished fighting and causing harm on themselves, they went to Karmo Police Station to report the matter on Sept. 12.

Ukagha said that on that same date, the convicts sustained injuries on their bodies through bites and clawing.

“During police investigation, they could not give satisfactory explanation on what caused the fight,” he said.

Ukahga said the offence contravened the provision of Sections 113 and 244 of the Penal Code.

A Federal High Court in Lagos, on Friday, sentenced a businessman, Ifeanyi Ezeanwu, to five years imprisonment, over importation of a container load of Tramadol and other sex enhancing drugs.

The convict was sentenced by Justice Hadiza Rabiu-Shagari, after the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration Control (NAFDAC) had reviewed the facts of the charge before the court.

The convict was first arraigned before the court in February 2015, on a one count charge of unlawful importation of the said drugs.

Apart from series of Tramadol tablets, other banned drugs said to have been imported by the convict include: Ibamol tablet of 50 mg, and Heogra tablet of 150 mg.

The offence, according to the prosecution, contravenes the provisions of section 1(a) of the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods (Miscellaneous provision) Act Cap. C34, Law of the Federation 2004.

The convict had pleaded not guilty during his first arraignment, but when the case came up at the last adjourned date, he changed his plea to guilty, while the court adjourned the case until today, for a review of fact and sentence.

Reviewing the facts of the case on Friday, the prosecutor, Umar Shamaki, narrated to the court how the convict was arrested by NAFDAC operatives.

Mr Shamaki also tendered several items which including the convict’s confessional statements, samples of banned drugs, which were admitted as exhibits by the court.

After the review, the prosecutor urged the court to sentence the convict according to Section 3(1) of NAFDAC Act.

Mr Shamaki told the court that the NAFDAC Act prescribed a payment of N500,000 fine, or a prison term not less than five years and not more than 15 years.

Meanwhile, counsel to the convict, Vivian Ekwegh pleaded with the court, to be lenient in sentencing the accused, as he was a first time offender.

In sentencing the convict, Justice Rabiu-Shagari, held: “the prosecution has been able to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt, especially, as there is no other way of proving a case than self-admittance”.

She, consequently, convicted and sentenced the convict to a term of five years imprisonment from date of arrest.

The court, however, gave the convict an option of fine of N300,000.
