I was wondering how konga would rise above the waters.

Although expecting Konga to absorb the Yudala brand...for what it's worth, this looks like a good opportunity for both sides

Phones / "Mark Zuckerberg Should Zuck Off And Quit" - Investor Scott Stringer Says by Newsprex(m): 3:06am On Apr 05, 2018

One of Facebook's major investors is calling on the social network to drop CEO Mark Zuckerberg from its board as part of a management shakeup.

Scott Stringer, New York City Comptroller and the person in charge of investing the city's $195bn pension fund, called on Facebook to add three new independent members to its board of directors and remove Zuckerberg as chairman of the board.

Stringer, who estimates his city's fund has sunk about $1bn into purchasing Facebook shares, called on the board to make changes in the wake of revelations on the company's cooperation with Cambridge Analytica in the run-up to the 2016 elections.

While Stringer says he does not plan to pull the Big Apple's investment bucks out of Facebook, he is calling directly on the board to consider his request for a shake-up in the wake of a data scandal that saw the company lop $50bn from its market cap and lose the trust of many users.

Currently, Facebook's board of directors consists of Zuckerberg (who is chairman), COO Sheryl Sandberg, VCs Marc Andreesen, Peter Thiel, Erskine Bowles, and Kenneth Chenault, Gates Foundation CEO Susan Desmond Hellmann, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, and WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum.

"We think there needs to be more independent board oversight, I think there needs to be an independent chairman of the board," Stringer said in a TV interview.

"I think we need more independent directors, and directors that have experience in terms of data, and ethics, and all the things that these emerging huge companies need in light of what's happened."

There's a risk to our democracy

The 'what's happened' in this case being the revelation that Facebook had allowed a researcher to harvest the data of around 50 million of its users for use in creating targeted ad campaigns in the run-up to the 2016 US presidential elections for political strategists at Cambridge Analytica.

"There's a risk to our democracy," Stringer said.

"This third-party company rerouted data that ended up benefiting a presidential candidate and in light of the Mueller investigation I think Congress has to ask these tough questions."

Stringer concedes that, when it comes down to it his group won't have much sway, even with the billion-dollar investment. Because Zuckerberg controls around 60 per cent of the voting shares, the Facebook CEO has the power to stamp out pretty much any effort that he doesn't approve of. Instead, Stringer says, he hopes to appeal to Zuck and the board's interest in the company's bottom line.

"We're not trying to harm Facebook, we're trying to make it a stronger company," the comptroller contends.

"When something like this happens, and maybe it was a long time coming in light of these investigations we really have an obligation to step up."

Meanwhile, at Facebook

The social network proved this week that it doesn't need help to embarrass itself. Reports have surfaced that some deleted videos were not actually being wiped from Facebook servers and could still be accessed. Facebook has said the saved videos were the result of a 'bug' and that it would resolve the issue and delete the videos for real.

Then there's Zuck himself, who couldn't help but pick a fight with Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Shortly after Cook was quoted as saying of Facebook "we could make a ton of money if we monetized our customer — if our customer was our product," the Zuck fired back saying "I find that argument, that if you’re not paying that somehow we can’t care about you, to be extremely glib and not at all aligned with the truth."

And if there's one thing we know about Zuckerberg, he's a man with the upmost respect for his user base. Then again - Cook's Chinese customers might have a few words to say about not selling out customers to curry favor with a government.

Clinton Trump'd

And finally, but not at all least, an internal Facebook white paper has shown that Donald Trump's US presidential campaign "better leveraged Facebook’s ability to optimize for outcomes" than Hillary Clinton's team. ®

Phones / Konga Plans Merger With Yudala To Provide Quality Services by Newsprex(m): 2:02pm On Apr 04, 2018

There are strong indications that Konga, the e-commerce recently acquired by Zinox Group, will merge with Yudala this month.

Our correspondent gathered from reliable sources in the company that the move was part of the ongoing restructuring of the company aimed at building a strong brand and attaining market leadership in the e-commerce industry.

However, industry watchers observed that the merger between Konga and Yudala was a potential game-changer for e-commerce in the country.

According to them, combined strengths of Konga and Yudala will improve consumer experience by lending more convenience to the shopping process and expand access to a wider range of products, services and solutions for Nigerians.

Konga, founded in 2012 by Sim Shagaya, dominated the news recently following its acquisition by the Zinox Group, after months of intense negotiation with major investors, Naspers and AB Kinnevik.

As part of the restructuring in the company, a new management was announced recently with the appointment of Olusiji Ijogun, a seasoned and experienced technocrat as chairman and the former Vice President of Nokia, Nick Imudia, as the chief executive officer.

Yudala, which was launched about two years ago, offers a retail roll-out strategy and a network of physical stores, which has helped the company reach many unserved and underserved Nigerians.

Commenting on a possible merger between Konga and Yudala, the Lead Partner, Infusion Lawyers, Senator Ihenyen, said he was not surprised at the move, saying the merger would have many benefits for both brands.

According to him, Yudala will benefit from Konga’s massive online subscribers to market its products while Konga will leverage Yudala’s physical stores to deliver a unique shopping experience to Nigerians.

He said, “Over the years, Konga has successfully created a strong brand for itself in the e-commerce space in Nigeria. With this strong brand, Konga is in a great position to leverage Yudala’s fairly distributed physical stores in Nigeria. On Yudala’s part, by merging with Konga, it’s an opportunity to also leverage Konga’s 100-thousand-strong online subscribers, giving Konga subscribers the ‘real’ shopping experience. So, I think the merger will be a win-win for both Konga and Yudala. Of course, I expect Konga to absorb the Yudala brand.”

Ihenyen posited that the impact of the merger on the Nigeria’s e-commerce ecosystem would be a significant one, as e-commerce companies such as Amazon and Alibaba had started opening up brick-and-mortar stores for their customers, a trend, which had not been embraced in the country.

He said, “Brick-and-mortar stores are relatively costly to set up, especially in a market like Nigeria where there is no even distribution of urban life. But by establishing brick-and-mortar stores, e-commerce companies can add more value by giving their thousands of subscribers the shopping experience that is beyond just receiving stuff at their doorsteps.”

“Millennials now want to have more than just a click. They want to drop by, taking the fun offline. In the next few years, e-commerce stores and offline stores will be the same. Online stores will increasingly become a window-shopping experience, while offline stores will be the experience centres. This is the future.”

Phones / "Apple Is Not Consumer Friendly" - Zuckerberg Fires Back At Apple's CEO Tim Cook by Newsprex(m): 2:42pm On Apr 03, 2018

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg remained silent for far too long following the revelation that a shady political consultancy called Cambridge Analytica was able to steal personal data belonging to an estimated 50 million people using Facebook’s own tools. Now that Zuckerberg has broken his silence, however, he can’t stop talking. The Facebook co-founder and chief executive issued an initial statement nearly two weeks ago, and he has since apologized in a full-page newspaper ad as well as in several interviews. Of course, we’ve all been down this road many times before. Facebook screws up, Zuckerberg apologizes, Facebook makes a few changes to privacy controls, and the commotion slowly fades away until the next big privacy scandal pops up. Lather, rinse, repeat.

The Cambridge Analytica scandal is a big one, though. It is perhaps one of the biggest privacy scandals in Facebook’s history, which is long and full of privacy scandals. Using Facebook’s developer tools, the company was able to harvest private data belonging to more than 50 million Facebook users by circulating a fake “personality quiz” that was completed by only a few hundred thousand users. Facebook has been the target of a great deal of criticism since a whistleblower brought this scandal to light, and now Mark Zuckerberg has responded to one of Facebook’s highest-profile critics: Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Apple’s Tim Cook is the CEO of the biggest publicly traded company in the United States, and he used the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica scandal as an opportunity to remind the world that Apple values its customers’ privacy. While companies like Facebook and Google make money by learning as much as possible about users to serve them targeted advertisements, Apple makes money by overcharging for cell phones. Both strategies have pros and cons, but the latter prevents Apple from having to deal with the blowback from privacy scandals akin to Facebook’s current predicament.

In an interview on MSNBC with host Chris Hayes last week, Cook had a lot to say about Facebook and its most recent privacy scandal. When Hayes asked the CEO what he would do if he ever found himself in Zuckerberg’s current situation, he offered a great response: “I wouldn’t be in this situation.”

As we all know, the user is the product with free services like Google’s search engine or Facebook’s social network. Google and Facebook are advertising companies. Cook reiterated that Apple doesn’t collect data and sell ads the way Facebook does, so the customer is not the product.

“[Apple could] make a ton of money if we monetized our customer,” Cook told Hayes during the interview. “We’ve elected not to do that.”

Cook continued, “I think it’s an invasion of privacy. I think it’s – privacy to us is a human right. It’s a civil liberty, and in something that is unique to America, this is like freedom of speech and freedom of the press and privacy is right up there for us. And so, we’ve always done this. This is not something that we just started last week when we saw something happening. We’ve been doing this for years.”

Well, it’s been almost a week since that interview, and now Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has finally issued a public response. In an interview on a podcast with Vox co-founder Ezra Klein, Zuckerberg called Cook’s remarks “extremely glib and not aligned with the truth.” He went even further, suggesting that Cook was quick to tear apart Facebook’s business model when his company’s own model isn’t very consumer friendly.

“I think it’s important that we don’t all get Stockholm Syndrome and let the companies that work hard to charge you more convince you that they actually care more about you,” Zuckerberg said. “Because that sounds ridiculous to me.”

Zuckerberg went on to explain that Facebook is one of several ad-supported online products, claiming that its goal is to connect everyone, even those who cannot afford to pay for such a service. “The reality here is that if you want to build a service that helps connect everyone in the world, then there are a lot of people can’t afford to pay,” he said. “And therefore, as with a lot of media, having an advertising-supported model is the only rational model that can support building this service to reach people.”

Foreign Affairs / Founder Of Amazon, Jeff Bezos Lost $54 Billion Over Donald Trump's Opinion by Newsprex(m): 3:23pm On Apr 01, 2018

Amazon.com Inc shares fell as much as 7.4 percent on Wednesday, wiping about $53.6 billion from its market value after U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly indicated he wanted to rein in the U.S. technology and retail group.

Trump talked about changing Amazon's tax treatment because he is worried about mom-and-pop retailers being put out of business, the Axios website reported.

The stock pared losses after a White House official said it did not know of any specific policy changes related to Amazon at the moment, adding that it was always looking at different options on a range of policy issues.

Amazon could not be reached immediately reached for comment.

Trump has taken aim at the company over taxes and jobs, without offering evidence. The retailer's chief executive officer, Jeff Bezos, owns the Washington Post, which Trump has frequently criticized.

"Capitol Hill wants Facebook's blood, but President Trump isn't interested. Instead, the tech behemoth Trump wants to go after is Amazon," Axios reported, citing five sources who have discussed the issue with him.

Tech stocks are already under pressure after Facebook Inc acknowledged earlier this month that user data had been improperly harvested by a consultancy firm.

"With Facebook and regulatory worries, the last thing nervous tech investors wanted to see was news that Trump is targeting Bezos and Amazon over the coming months as this remains a lingering cloud over the stock and heightens the risk profile in the eyes of the Street," GBH Insights analyst Daniel Ives said.

Less than two hours into the trading session, its trading volume had already exceeded the 10-day moving average for a full day.

The stock, which fell as low as $1,386.17, was last down 4 percent at $1,439,50, giving it a market value of around $681 billion. The stock was on track for its biggest one-day percentage decline since Jan. 29 2016.
