Apple might introduce simpler branding for its phones according to an analyst from Guggenheim. In an investor note, Robert Cihra from the analyst company says Apple will use the upcoming cycle to change the iPhone naming pattern. This would happen only to the successors of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus - the flagship would keep its X suffix to denote its standing.

Making a change in naming is not something new at Cupertino. Apple has been playing with The New iPad and numbers for its tablets, which in the long run has delivered more confusion than simplifying.

The analyst also said that Apple is unlikely to increase its iPhone sales because the company “ultimately cannot outgrow what is now a no-growth smartphone market”. Cihra says Apple will keep up the revenue solely because of the increased average selling price of the latest iPhones.

In order to give faster and lighter way to access the internet, Google launched “Google Go” in 30 African countries, including Nigeria.

The application is designed to fix and resolve existing problems faced by 73% of smartphone users who uses low memory device and less than 1GB RAM storage.

In the first week of May 2016, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) announced that Nigerian telecom operators had one month to start implementing the ‘Do-not-Disturb’ (DND) code.

With the 2442 short code that will be stipulated and assigned, subscribers could opt out of the barrage of advertorial text messages from these telcos.

At a Telecoms Consumer Parliament in Abuja at the time, Prof Umar Garuba Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC said sanctions awaited any telco that failed to comply with the directive.

However, it seems measures for the sanctions have finally been put in place nearly 2 years later.

At the 83rd edition of the Telecom Consumer Parliament (TCP), a spokesperson of the NCC Mr Philip Eretan, warned that any telco violating the DND directive will be charged ₦500,000.

This sanction is also coming on the heels of increased complaints by subscribers.

Regardless of the fact that by December 2017, 10 million subscribers had opted into the DND zone, the The National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) had complained that the messages were still coming.

Last year, we concluded that the new DND directive was hurting Value Added Services (VAS) businesses, but subscribers value their peace of mind above whose ox is gored.

Until a telco is fined, the subscribers will also view this directive with an initial skepticism born of experience.

Facebook offers a more specific look on how it will restrict data access on Facebook, and these nine plans will be effective starting on Monday, 9th of April, 2018.

See the changes via:

1. Event API: Any app using the event API will no longer be able to access the guests lists and post on the event wall.

2. Groups API: Apps using the Group API will no longer have access to group member list and all third-party apps will need approval from Facebook and admin to ensure they benefit the group.

3. Pages API: All future access to the Pages API will need to be approved by Facebook.

4. Facebook Login: Facebook will need to approve all apps that request access to information such as check-ins, likes, photos, posts, videos, events and groups. Facebook will also no longer allow apps to ask for access to personal information such as religious or political views, relationship status and details, custom friends lists, education and work history, fitness activity, book reading activity, music listening activity, news reading, video watch activity, and games activity.

5. Instagram Platform API: The Instagram Platform API has been deprecated.

6. Search and Account Recovery: You can no longer search for a Facebook profile by phone number or email address.

7. Call and Text Recovery: Call and text history doesn’t collect message data, but rather who you message and call most frequently. You can opt-out of this and all logs older than one year will be deleted.

8. Data Providers and Partner Categories: This product enables third-party data providers to offer their targeting directly on Facebook. Today, Facebook has decided to shut it down to protect people’s privacy.

9. App control: Finally, starting on Monday, April 9, Facebook will show people a link at the top of their News Feed so they can see what apps they use — and the information they have shared with those apps. People will also be able to remove apps that they no longer want. As part of this process Facebook will also tell people if their information may have been improperly shared with Cambridge Analytica.
