Phones / These Are The 7 Things Bill Gates Said Concerning Nigeria Economy by Newsprex(m): 9:40am On Mar 23, 2018
Here are the interesting 7 points Bill Gates made concerning the growth of Nigeria at the National Economy Council held in Abuja on Thursday:

1. Nigeria’s government revenue as a percentage of its GDP is by far the lowest in the world, the next lowest country, Bangladesh collects 10 per cent of its GDP. If you got yourself up to second to the last in the world, you would have an extra $18 billion to budget. Obviously, you are aiming higher, but it gives you some idea about the scale we are talking about.

2. Growth is inevitable, Nigeria has unmatched economic potentials, but what becomes of that potential depends on the choices you make as Nigeria leaders.

3. The most important choice you can make is to maximize your greatest resource, the Nigerian people. Nigeria will thrive when every Nigerian is able to thrive.

4. More than half of rural Nigerian children can’t adequately read and write.” “The conclusion is inescapable, Nigeria’s economy tomorrow depends on improving its schools today.

5. If you invest in their health, education, and opportunities- the human capital we are talking about today, then they will lay the foundation for sustained prosperity. If you don’t, however, then it is very important to recognise that there will be a sharp limit on how much the country can grow.

6. Nigeria is one of the most dangerous places in the world to give birth with the fourth worst maternal mortality rate in the world ahead of only Sierra Leone, Central African Republic and Chad. One in three Nigerian children is chronically malnourished.

7. The Nigerian government’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan identifies “investing in our people” as one of three “strategic objectives.” But the “execution priorities” don’t fully reflect people’s needs, prioritizing physical capital over human capital.

8. To anchor the economy over the long term, investments in infrastructure and competitiveness must go hand in hand with investments in people. People without roads, ports, and factories can’t flourish. And roads, ports and factories without skilled workers to build and manage them can’t sustain an economy.

Bill Gates also disclosed that he has committed $1.6 billion so far, with the intention of increasing his commitment in the country.

Phones / "It's Time To Delete Your Facebook Account" - Brian Acton, Whatsapp Co-founder by Newsprex(m): 8:55am On Mar 22, 2018
Brian Acton, who co-founded WhatsApp with Jan Koum in 2009, has declared it's time for you to leave Facebook, following the recent scandal with Facebook's alleged indirect involvement in the US Elections of 2016.

A little backstory in case you missed it - data mining and analytics firm Cambridge Analytica misused Facebook user data in violation of Facebook's guidelines and terms, leading to a continuing, huge scandal. The data played a huge role in influencing voters in the 2016 US Elections to favor then-candidate Donald Trump. The scandal has lead to a big drop in Facebook stock value in the past week.

It goes without saying that many in the tech community have turned their attention to Facebook and CEO Mark Zuckerberg's silence has been troubling. Some investors are even reportedly suing Facebook over the stock price drop.

So in light of the evolving controversy Brian Acton voiced his opinion on Twitter that people should delete their Facebook accounts, saying "Delete and forget. It's time to care about privacy."

Brian Acton left WhatsApp earlier this year. Facebook's $22B acquisition of the messaging app has lead to his impressive $5.5B net worth. He has recently invested some $50M into a WhatsApp-rival service Signal.

Phones / Whatsapp Calls Without Internet Made Possible By Rwandan Student by Newsprex(m): 11:29pm On Feb 28, 2018
For many people who have been complaining about the high cost of internet connection when it comes to making WhatsApp calls, they can now heave a sigh of relief as a 26-year-old Rwandan student has made a remarkable discovery that will turn things around.

Deodate Mugenzi, who is pursuing Information and Communication Technology at the Polytechnic Regional Center in Kigali, Rwanda has figured out a prototype that will enable WhatsApp users to make internal and international calls without the internet.

According to a report by local news portal New Times, Mugenzi said his prototype development was driven by the fact that internet connection is expensive in most areas of Africa, with many not able to access the internet at all.

“The problem is that many people here in Rwanda and other parts of Africa cannot afford to own smartphones that enable them to use all these internet enabled services. To address this, people ought to use services that allow them to communicate using any platform that is available to them,” Mugenzi was quoted by the New Times.

The ICT student said he generated the idea of free connection in 2017, and with the only materials available to him at the time, that is, his laptop and library books on physics, he started doing his research. What helped him more, he said, was the skills he had gathered so far in class as well as the knowledge he acquired from books on physics.

How the system works

The computer system operates using optic physics, mobile gadget communication techniques, and networking principles. It enables users of WhatsApp to directly call mobile phone numbers. Currently, only WhatsApp users can call WhatsApp users.

This means that Rwandans and Africans, in general, will be able to communicate with their fellow Africans, especially those who use feature phones (phones that do not allow the use of popular internet services).
The use of smartphones in many developing countries like Africa is very limited. In Rwanda, the number of smartphone holders is well below 1.2 million people and this creates a challenge for service providers.
In order to use the platform, Mugenzi has to register the numbers of both the caller and the receiver on WhatsApp.

Challenges

The system cannot allow multiple calls at the same time. Mugenzi also needs more support to conduct intensive research and studies to enable him to scale up his system. He is currently partnering with the American embassy in Rwanda to offer innovative training to several young people in the country.

In January, Sterling bank partnered with 9mobile and Solo phones to introduce a contract smartphone pre-bundled with mobile plans to new and old customers of the bank. However, the partnership is said to last for 12 months.

I saw a post from here that when you walk into any of the nearest Sterling bank around your area and open a Sterling Plus account, then deposit minimum of N10,000 and voila! you would go home with a Solo Aspire 4 smartphone.

I went to confirm in nearest Sterling bank and I was given a flyer, meaning it's 100% true....
