Nairaland General › Re: Three Things A Feminist Should Avoid (Opinion) by neyohh: 9:57pm On May 05, 2021 |
nextstep: Feminism, in its original intended form, is an assertion that there should not be discrimination based on gender: women should not be judged on their ability to work, earn, lead, etc. solely based on their gender.
Though there are hotly debated and valid differences, I will equate feminism, womanism, and gender equality for the purpose of this discussion.
Feminism is why we have politicians, voters, doctors, astronauts, presidents, CEOs, professors, etc. who are women. It's why women can legally inherit property, leave abusive marriages, and pursue personal happiness.
To frame your acceptance of what I'm about to say: I would call myself a feminist, womanist, and a believer in gender equality; my mother was a founding member of Women in Nigeria back in early 80s so I was steeped in the history, reason, and difficulties of feminism in the Igbo, Nigerian, African, Western, and global contexts. I am a happily married man who appreciates and encourages his strong wife to attain all that she can. I don't feel threatened, and I respect her as a partner in decision making, though I confess I've had to put my foot down as a man on the rare occasion. As a woman, she appreciates and desires me to lead as her man with all the connotations it implies, but it doesn't mean she wants to be discriminated against, ignored, abused, or denied pursuit of happiness.
I would say my understanding of feminism is more about mutual self-respect between interdependent partners who complement each other.
Ironically, there has been a long history of gender eqality in Africa - to the point that most African women were far more independent and empowered in African societies in 1700s than their European counterparts. African women provided for their families (they farmed, taught, ran markets, protested, and were a visible voice in decision making in African societies long before American women could vote).
If a man have have total independence without any inhibitions, why can't a woman? There have been many inhibitions placed on a woman simply because she is a woman, and objectively cannot be said to be fair. Feminism is a reaction to this.
This of course conveniently avoids the fact that these books were written from a male point of view - I find even the concept of God being male quite odd since we're restricting an omnipresent being to needing to have a gender. It reflects more the limitations in the minds of people than the actual reality. The bible also suggests/supports a lot of things that we now consider archaic, so I wouldn't be quick to use it as a reference for what should be in today's society. But that aside, ever hear the expression: "the man may be the head, but the woman is the neck?" Can't do much without the neck and head both agreeing to turn. I view marriage in that light: it's a partnership where men too should participate in give-and-take.
No argument here... this is just a classic case of eating your cake and having it. With anything and any movement, most people will take all the positives, and not want to take on the negatives: e.g. some women complain that men are no longer chivalrous because of equality, conveniently forgetting that chivalry was strong when women couldn't own property, vote, lead societies, and if you go back far enough in Western society, didn't even posses souls.
However, we can't ignore basic biology that there are some things women can't (or were not trained to, or would rather not) do; conversely, there are some things men cannot do (or are not naturally disposed to doing).
Well, the main thrust of feminism is that it gives both genders the same opportunities to choose what they want to do - in education, employment, having a voice in society. We should not ignore the inequalities that keep half the population oppressed because of a few idiosyncrasies. This is woke, why do leftists all sound the same with similar argument patterns |

Billyonaire666: An Oppressive Regime is a Fearful Regime.
Provide them jobs and they will shun crime. More than a million youths will be paraded this year alone and we think it is just about a people who love crime? There is a mental prison and these youths are being imprisoned, and fear is being used as weapons of war. Mostly Southern Youths whose brains are laser sharp.
I think a 5G world, has birth 5D minds who want things faster than the old legacy systems - Cryptos over fiat systems, E-mails over Post Office Box, Social Media over Physical Conferences and above all, fast wealth over poverty.
We must invent and design and build frameworks that will make them earn legitimately in a digital age. Instead of shaming them, then arm them digital pathways to wealth in minutes.
Only fools will disagree. So you're saying they have all the tools at their disposal but choose to use it wrongly. They're as daft as your comment |

Even if i was dealing drugs and i got nabbed, I'll be released in a jiffy when someone puts call to an oga at the top.
There's no justice and law in nigeria. We have to start from somewhere, my plan is to build a website where people can report and get some type of reward. What I'm testing right now is if i could build a relationship with the law enforcement which is already in progress. In no time this could hit the very big player's ( Chainlink). Sounds Idealistic but worth a shot. I'm going to do it anyway. |
