@Ibime

1. I do agree with the spine of the team being unchanged. Lamps can stay for nothing more than 100k a week. Anything more is stupid.

2. Playmakers never came to the premiership, hence why you think it's never worked. Veron was a holding midfielder not a playmaker. Some holding midfielders are make-shift playmakers to some teams. A playmaker will work in the premiership if only you have all the right players for the strategy. You have to effectively move away from a 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2. and a 4-3-2-1 or 4-2-3-1 when playing away. When you play a 4-3-3 you can't play a playmaker and that's why many of them fail.

3. These players are not wingers. They are rather players that can adapt to the wings because they are good. These players can adpat on the flanks of a 4-3-3 system and that does not make them wingers. Messi was play maker for the You-21 team and there's no 4-3-3 play in Argentina so no wing play for Messi as u suggest. In the same vein, Dinho never played as a winger and doesn't for Brazil. Brazil plays a 4-4-2 and he plays in the centre of midfeild for his country.
Only chelsea plays wingers on a 4-3-3. Kalou, Cole, SWP, Duff, Robben. These players are far different from Ronaldo. A good example of a winger is David Beckham. In the past you had Finidi Goerge, Marc Overmars, Zenden. These days all the wingers are gone.

4. Chimbonda. My goodness we made a signing this summer in Ivanovic this season and do not think we should look away from that policy. If you play Chimbonda, you will have Carvalho and Chimbonda on the right of defence being 30 years old. Common Thanks but No Thanks.

5. Super Mario, forget him!!!!

6. Kalou. he will gorw. I believe that. Sinclair can come in as well.

7. What if we don't get Mario? Plus we need world class strikers. There are some other issues you have not solved. Anelka can't head. So what's the use of good wingers when or strikers can't jump? Who takes free kicks? Corner kicks? That's why the team you've chosen is good but defective of two world class personalities. For me, Klass Huntelaar and Diego.

Don't think Manu and Arsenal will be the same next season. So do not build a team based on the current premiership. They are going to buy big. We are also going to have big threats from Spurs, Mancity, Everton, Portmouth. They all have good managers and will buy good in the summer. Modric to Spurs. That tells you what is coming. So we need to stay on top.

8. No 8.

somze:

My point exactly, we can not afford to waste millions on otherwise cheaper players.

Who else would buy them at that outrageous price?

I am not advocating a £40million spend. If we sell off Sheva, Sidwell, Maka, Pizzarro, BenHaim, Ferreira at £5million each. We have raised £30million. Ballack or Lamps and Drog (leaving anyway) at £10 million each. We have raised £20million.

£50 million will get us decent players. You guys think no CM is worth more than £15m. Wait till the transfer market opens.

You make some good points - lemme just comment on some of these.

(1.) Some would call Rosicky and Hleb playmakers. Benayoun is a classic playmaker as is Malbranque. Joe Cole is supposed to be a playmaker. Pires is playmaker now for Villareal but almighty Wenger never saw fit to use him as playmaker. Why? I believe the EPL does not allow you to "carry" a player through games. Every player must fulfill a tactical function. I was against Mourinho signing Deco when he first came and I am against signing Diego now. Even Mourinho admitted that he was happy he didn't make the mistake of signing Deco cos Deco wouldn't have coped with the physicality. Diego will only survive if he can adapt.

In the EPL, playmakers take three forms - coming off the wing eg Pires, playing deep in midfield eg Scholes or playing as a second striker eg Bergkamp. I cannot recall a team that has specifically given someone a playmaker role except Boro with Juninho. Even the mighty Milan had to convert Pirlo to a "deep lying playmaker". To be honest, the playmaker role is extinct. Diego, Van Der Vaart, Zidane and Riquelme are the last of a dying breed, although Van Der Vaart is adaptable. Zidane even had to play left midfield for Real. Anyway, I just don't think it would work but I hope I am proved wrong if we do sign him.

(2.) Sorry, I should use the word "forward" instead of "winger". I expect wingers in a 4-3-3 to be able to cut inside. Somze mentioned Joaquin. Joaquin is a winger, not a forward. I think he finds it hard to come inside and recieve the ball centrally. David Silva can do it, and do it very well. You just have to question if he has the afterburner pace and physical strength to make the difference. His physique and speed is not too dissimilar to Joe Cole.

(3.) If you can find a younger rightback of his quality and price, feel free to recommend.

(4.) Kalou will never be able to cross or pass straight. His kay-leg is genetic. He can't change that.

(5.) Anelka can't head, hence I want an Alex Song type player to put balls into the channels the way Anelka likes. I am not looking at playing long balls all the time, but I want the option if need be. Anelka will be paired with guys like Alex Song, De Guzman etc. As for the other strikers, they are too expensive. Huntelaar may not be quick enough to play 4-3-3, especially on the counterattack. They are all overpriced except Benzema who wants to go to Spain anyway. If all else fails, I will pay £20m for Mario Gomez. Or I will buy Jozy Altidore for £7m and wait till the next transfer window to see if I can get anythin cheaper.

@ibime.

1. The play maker role is far going extint? I really will not want to believe that. In the premiership, it is non-existent. in the spanish league however, it is the bomb. you have in barca alone 4 players that can play the role. Deco, Iniesta, Xavi and Dinho. Real have Sneijder. I don't think it is a wise idea in football to have a play maker be a winger. A play maker is meant to operate and make play function. The offensive link between the defence and the attack. The wing makes it too narrow to operate from as everything is predictible.

Deco won't have cut it in the premiership. He far too jelenke to have any impact. On the contrary, Diego plays in the Bundesliga which just as strength-demanding as the premiership and his play-making role in bremen can't be over-stated. that's real reason I think VDV and Diego will cut it in the premiership.

2. yes forward is what you wanted to say. joaquin can only play in a 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 as he is a typical winger. Doesn't do too much but crosses are off the hinges.

3. Corluka of Mancity as far as I am concerned is the best right back in the premiership. The croatian is a very technically gifted player. I used to think this way until I heard Slaven Bilic say it as well. he will come at perhaps the same cost as spurs will want for Chimbonda. Why can't we look at Micah Richards. Effective right back, young and can play centre of defence like Ivanovic. Though might come slightly higher than Chim.

4. Ok I do understand that they are expensive but we don't even know what system Grant and his crew will to the club next season. If he plays a 4-4-2 then we need a striker that's taller than Anelka and can head. If not then we should not even try to cross balls at all as we will be no aerial threat to anay team even if we play women.

Mario Gomez is a good choice, I forgot him for a while you know. Who is this other guy you mentioned for £7m never heard of him.

You haven't answered who takes free kicks and corner kicks next season since it is apparent Lamps and Drog are leaving.

He is dreaming. There will be no penalties. We will score them and win straight if that is what they are coming to play for. We should bombard them the way we did to Manu and give them no chance for a back seat let alone front view.

those guys won't take any chances
why should they be the one to stop us in every semi-final?
If they played the kind of game they played against Man-u,
I bet our victory

@ Nateevs:

Corluka was bought for £7m. How much do you think they will sell him now? I will guesstimate @ £14m. Chimbonda is going for £4m or £5m. As for Richards, we already know his story - £18m. I don't believe in spending more than £10m on a full back. Chimbonda was 28 at the start of the season. Maybe he is 29 now. He still has good 5 years in him. I thought you would mention Rafinha who would cost about £7m or £8m although I heard a rumuor that Liverpool have signed him for £6m but I doubt it.

Jozy Altidore is the guy I mentioned. Youtube him. A lot of interest is being shown in him from Madrid and Milan plus a few others. He is a Haitian American playing in American league for New York Red Bulls.

As for freekicks and corners, have you seen De Guzman cross ball? Farfan takes a superb free-kick. Quaresma can also take. All these players are highly technical.

Nah dawg - Sneijder is playing left wing @ Real. As is Dinho @ Barca although the way he drifts inside you might think he is a playmaker. Iniesta is playing almost as a conventional midfielder, sometimes playing wing or even DM when Toure is injured. The only peeps I know playing playmaker in Spain are Pires@Villareal, David Silva@ Valencia (since Mata took the left wing), Ariel Ibagaza @ Mallorca, Esteban Granero@ Getafe and Pablo Aimar @ Zaragoza when he is fit.

Infact, in the whole of Europe, there cannot be more than 20 people playing as conventional playmakers. In Germany, you got Diego, Rakitic and Van Der Vaart. In Portugal, you got Rui Costa and Joao Moutinho. In France, you have Johan Micoud. In Turkey you have Alex. In Holland, maybe you can say Kenneth Perez is a playmaker. In Italy, Totti, Montolivo and maybe Cigarini@ Parma. That is about all I can think of. Not more than 20. 30 max. That position is extinct.
Re: Chelsea Fans: Identify Yourselves Here (Old) by somze(f): 8:49am On Apr 28, 2008
I would have liked Richards but he signed a new contract and would be expensive to guy him out of. If he's on the range of 15m I think he would be a great buy.

I prefer a player that has the EPL experience already so he'll take a shorter time to blend with the game.

Wow i went thru the last 3 pages ,i culdnt but notice the hot debate and argument btw ibime, somze and nateev.U guys sholud try and register for a debate contest.anyh i feel we should talk about our next match and stop arguing about a match has been won and is in d past. Also lets reserve all this transfer debate.

What is really important for Chelsea now is to reach the UCL finals, its a height we ve failed to attain. We must step up our game and play better than the previous leg match at anfield and the Key to reaching Moscow is that we must not conceed, even though i doubt if we can do that cos our defence of late loses concentration at dying or crucial minutes.

Also Avram Grant has to prove himself here and be mindful Of Benitez tactics.Cos wrong decisions from the bench could cost us the match.

Anyh i still believe we ve a better chance of qualifying.

I predict Chelsea 2 Liverpool 0

2. Which club did John Terry support as a boy?

3. Which club did we sign John Terry from as a 14 year old?

4. Which Chelsea player had a trial with Man Utd at 17 but was refused a contract because he stole stuff from the changing rooms?

5. Which Liverpool player supported Chelsea as a boy?

@somze, nateevs and ibime,

Some nice footie analysis going on here. I am impressed to know some EPL peeps still care to look across the Channel to see what is happening in the rest of Europe

I personally dont think playmakers would survive in the EPL. the game is played at a neck breaking pace and a playmaker which would slow you down are not reaaly appreaciated. In the EPL pacy players are well celebrated. Lennon, Wallcot, Henry, C.Ronaldo etc.

But in the continent a conscious effort is made to string delicate passes and outthink the opponent thats why playmakers excel. I also feel Niko Kranjcar is a player too good for Portsmouth. I was hoping he would go to Stuttgart in 2005.

Players like D'Allesandro, Lincoln, I used to know one Dudu is CSKA moscow who could play good too.

I think Dudu is a good player. EPL needs players like Ribery , Quaresma, who coupled with their nimble skills are fleet footed. a player like Riquelme would never make it. You have to be fast and strong.

I heard that Thaksin is hell bent on getting Ronaldinho with like Euros40M

Is Thaksin on drugs? which Ronaldinho? to Man city?
Re: Chelsea Fans: Identify Yourselves Here (Old) by somze(f): 8:09pm On Apr 29, 2008
Now this is what I want to hear from Grant -

Grant defends Drogba following Rafa jibe

Chelsea boss Avram Grant insists star striker Didier Drogba is not a cheat and accused Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez of playing mind games ahead of their return Champions League semi-final at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

Benitez claims to have compiled a four-year dossier of Drogba's 'diving' antics and the striker came in for more criticism following the 1-1 first-leg draw at Anfield.

But Grant is adamant Drogba is not a diver and claims the Liverpool boss was trying to influence the officials ahead of their crucial return leg.

'I don't think he is a diver at all,' insisted Grant.

'He's a good player. He's a powerful player, so the referee needs to look at what happens to him more.

'If you look at the video and see what Jamie Carragher did to him in the first game, you will see the referee was very polite.

'Because he looks so powerful, defenders think there are other ways to stop him.

'I will not speak about the players of Liverpool and what they do. I don't like it when others speak about mine.

'In the first half of the first game, the referee could easily have given a yellow card to Carragher to get him banned for this match.

'It could have been offside for Ryan Babel in the build-up to their goal, even if he was not involved in the goal. I think he (Benitez) is trying to take attention from this.

'Rafa can say whatever he wants to say. I say what I think. Ask him why he's saying that. I think the reason is clear. One way to stop him is to use power more than ever. I think he has tried to affect the referee so he does not do his job.'

While Liverpool had the relative luxury of resting players ahead of on Wednesday's game when they took on Birmingham at the weekend, Chelsea fought hard to overcome Premier League title rivals Manchester United on Saturday.

But the fact that some of Liverpool's players will be fresher than his does not bother the Israeli.

Liverpool have to score or they are out and Grant, in a veiled dig at the Merseysiders, says he was happier fighting for the title on Saturday instead of going through the motions.

'First, I'm very glad that we had a game that was important for us and we didn't need to rest players,' said Grant.

'Of course, it's sometimes an advantage, but I don't think it will disturb us when it comes to the game.

'On Saturday we wanted to show that we can play like champions. We wanted to do that. But this is another game, a Champions League semi-final. We want to do it in this game.

'We started the game really well in Liverpool and deserved one goal. Then they played well but, in the end, we showed good character and were better at the end. We scored in the last minute. You can say whatever you like but it is 1-1.

'The dream of everybody is the Champions League. This is the top. We've gone a long, long way. It has not been easy up to this game.

'The target is the Champions League, for sure. You cannot say it's more important than other competitions, but it's very important for the club and I'm here to sell the club.

'Chelsea wants to be a big club. When you want to be a big club, you need to win the Champions League. It's very important for the club to create history for Chelsea.'

Chelsea's England midfielder Frank Lampard played in the first leg at Anfield last Tuesday but missed the 2-1 win over United on Saturday after the death of his mother in between.

Lampard has since returned to training and is likely to be in the squad for the game but Grant will leave it to the player to decide if he is mentally and physically fit enough to play in such a high-profile affair.

'Frank is doing everything to be available for the game,' said Grant.

'We always take decisions after the last training session.'

Captain John Terry is a yellow card away from missing the final in Moscow on May 21 but Grant does not think that will affect him in any way.

He added: 'You know him like I know him. He'll play to win like he always does. He won't play any differently.'
