I love Warri. I had a wonderful childhood in that city.
The city is in the news again and it is a political hot topic for all the wrong reasons.
Many people have a very wrong impression of what Warri really is.
Many perceive Warri as a Dangerous, Militant Infested Haven. Others know Warri only from the mouths of comedians.

But sincerely, Warri is one of the most liveable cities in Nigeria. I think Warri is amongst the Top 5 cities in the country.
In terms of per capita GDP, Warri is second only to Abuja. The number of middle class citizens in Warri is almost as much as the number of poor in the city. The number of brand new cars are almost equal to the number of old cars. The city has one of the best economies in Nigeria as a result of the oil economy.
All major roads in the city are dualised with street lights working perfectly from 6pm to 6am.

Much of the crises that we hear of doesn't take place in the city of Warri. It takes place in the creeks. The creeks are far away- some good two hours away by boat.

Once again, I love Warri cos I grew up there and I thought I could help correct erroneous impressions.

Here are some pics

i was suprised as well - i was expecting gunboats, RPGs, and etc
Re: The Real Warri (with Pictures) by ono(m): 10:26am On May 31, 2009
@blacksta,
That prodeco aerial view captured Warri a little bit more than the rest. Just look beyond the tastefully designed buildings - and you'd agree with me that there isn't any artillery or army formations anywhere in sight.

This is not to underplay the current crisis brewing in the area - but those are limited to the creeks and some villages.

In all, papabrowne has done a good job of posting these pics. Well done.

Re: The Real Warri (with Pictures) by JIYKEFAN: 3:10pm On May 31, 2009
I visited Warri in October 08 and I am not from Warri.

Warri was nice and the hotel I stayed in (Tegaton 5000N) was very nice as well. Much nicer than the 15000N per night hotels I rented in Lagos. I enjoyed my stay in Warri and imo the pictures represent the Warri I saw.

Re: The Real Warri (with Pictures) by Akuviv: 5:08pm On May 31, 2009
It is the true that the news hyper inflate the situation in the Niger Delta but when you put a face to the situation, like a loved one, firend, then you will agree that something ought to be done no matter how small.

The pictures are true but do not give 100% picture of warri. What is the % of people living in these 'Behind' areas as compared to the not-so-sweet areas. Take Abuja for example. The population inhabiting areas like Piwoi,Kuchingoro, kubwa, karu etc outnumber the high brow area like Asokoro,Maitama hence pictures of the former will be a better representation of the people and Abuja grin

Give us the picture of where the average Waffi individual resides. RESPECT!

Re: The Real Warri (with Pictures) by ezeagu(m): 7:29pm On May 31, 2009
When you say "real" do you mean "Real rich"? Because when I went through Warri I can guarantee you that this is not what I saw. No disrespect, but we shouldn't act like things are all fine and 'dandy' when their not. . . . . .
