Politics / The British People Have Been Suckered - Brexit Is Uks Version Of "CHANGE" by NigeriaToday: 12:11pm On Jun 29, 2016
The British People Have Been Suckered

We’re so, so, sorry. British people say that a lot, but this time we mean it—at least, the 48.1% of us who did not vote to light the funhouse on fire and see what happened. There is a cartoon logic to the slow-motion car-crash of British politics. Days after the country voted by a very narrow margin to leave the E.U., in a referendum engineered by a weak prime minister to secure his own power, it feels like we’ve got to the part in one of those old looney-tunes shows where Wile E. Coyote chases Roadrunner right off the edge of a cliff, and hangs there in mid-air, his legs pinwheeling. Just one look down and we’re plummeting into the worst political crisis in living memory.

Brexit is a shameful, concocted word for a shameful, concocted situation. Hours after the vote was in, the prime minister had resigned, and his party descended into civil war, with the Labour opposition not far behind as the stock markets tumbled and Scotland and Northern Ireland opened the question of breaking up the union. Meanwhile, racists across the nation were emboldened with a venal sense of victory, and started assaulting Asian children in the street, posting cards through their neighbors’ doors telling “Muslims” and “vermin” to go “home.” The government has no plan for what happens next. The “leave” campaign has no plan, either. The Labour Party is busy tearing itself to shreds. We thought we were better than this. We were wrong.

No, not everyone who voted “leave” is a swivel-eyed bigot. But the people who are largely voted that way, and the many gentler citizens who did the same now have to live with the fact that they’ve helped to empower the worst impulses of the angriest, most desperate people in this country at a time when racism is the only recognized outlet for working-class rage. As in America, the “voice of the people” is never paid any attention unless and until it is redirected into violent neo-nationalism, and that’s an formula which overlooks a good many of the actual, living, human people struggling to survive under neoliberalism today. That includes young people, queer people, disabled people, migrants, people of color and a great many ordinary citizens who were not taken in by hollow promises that Brexit would lead to better public services and free cake for everyone.

A lot of people voted “leave” because they were told that this was the way to get back at a hated political class. But the younger generation, who have been hardest hit by six years of merciless austerity, voted overwhelmingly to remain. Britain is not divided into “The Metropolitan Elite” and “Ordinary People.” The cracks in our civil society are nowhere near so neat, and plenty of people live in those cracks, and they are as frightened and despairing today as they have ever been.

Many “leave” voters are looking on their victory with the sick dread of a pie-eating champion who has just been told that the prize is more pie. As the pound crashes, taking international markets with it, and Brexit leaders admit that their entire campaign was based on extravagant lies, electoral officials are fielding calls from people asking if they can change their vote, and voters who just wanted to give a hated establishment a richly-deserved poke in the eye are wondering what the hell they’ve done.

What was sold as a working-class revolt has been revealed as a victory for a subset of the political elite mean-drunk on its own ambitions. The chief villains of this piece are David Cameron, who gambled the entire future of the nation on his own political career by promising a referendum to placate the right-wing of his party, and his Eton and Oxford chum Boris Johnson, the charismatic former London mayor who stalks British politics, burbling and chuckling out lie after awful lie, like a nightmare clown in a pulp horror film. In case anyone’s motivations were in question, Johnson has already anointed himself Prime Minister in waiting and set out his bid for the leadership. As for the country, Johnson’s assumption seems to be that if he broke it, he bought it.

The ordinary people of Britain have been suckered into taking sides in a war between conniving petty despots who care not a whit if their locker-room rivalry takes the whole country down with them. If I want to watch cackling incompetents with way too much power enlist bewildered people as cannon fodder in their playground rivalries whilst the country collapses, I will watch Game of Thrones, because the soundtrack is better. The rolling implosion of British civil society has no theme-tune besides a chorus of angry, frightened people demanding to know what’s going on, who’s in charge, and why they have been lied to so profoundly and with so little compunction.

Americans should take note. Many of us in Britain thought Brexit was a joke, including those who signed up for it, a good of whom are now publicly panicking at the unfolding consequences of their hilarious protest vote. If you introduce people with very little to lose to a big red button and tell them that they must not touch it or something dreadful will happen, a lot of them are going to push that button, because it’s hard to imagine how things can get worse. Well, we no longer need to imagine. Things are about to get a lot worse. On the morning of the results, in case we were hurting for scarily coiffed, opportunistic millionaire demagogues, Donald Trump helicoptered in to congratulate Brits for “taking their country back,” promising that the Americans will soon do the same. Watch and learn from this omnishambles—before it’s too late.

Business / Re: America Now Has 27.2 Gigawatts Of Solar Energy by NigeriaToday: 12:23pm On Jun 23, 2016
mrvitalis:

At what cost please??
Get that fact then u will know why it can't work here
The truth is if we had the money.. . We would have constant light

Don't be one of those who have not discovered that Nigerians get the worst for the highest prices. A village of 160 people in Germany produce their own power and not only that, they sell power to the grid.

If you find out how much the project cost them, you will be shocked your state has spent more than that on generators.

Business / America Now Has 27.2 Gigawatts Of Solar Energy by NigeriaToday: 9:47am On Jun 23, 2016
One million solar power installations now dot the nation’s rooftops and landscape. There were just a thousand such projects 16 years ago. Even with solar installations surpassing 1 million, the road to a carbon-zero energy economy is still long and daunting.

MIT professor Jessika Trancik talks to Inside Climate News about the role expanding solar energy capacity plays in a balanced low-carbon energy economy. "What storage can do is convert these intermittent resources into power plants that can provide energy on demand," Trancik of MIT told InsideClimate News. "In terms of the public policies needed right now, we do need continued support for the growth of renewables and a really big push on developing energy storage."

To compile this list of 630 victims of mass shootings, we’ve relied on the database maintained by the magazine Mother Jones, one of the most authoritative records of such incidents. It tracks mass shootings in the United States beginning in 1982. There is no one authoritative source on how many people have died in mass shootings—or, in fact, what constitutes a mass shooting. Until recently, a mass shooting was traditionally defined as an attack that kills at least four people, excluding the shooter, in a public space. (The federal government reduced its definition to three victims in 2013.) This list relies on the federal definition at the time that the attack took place. We compiled the names of the victims of these 82 attacks using public records and contemporaneous news accounts. If you believe any of the names or ages are wrongly recorded, please contact us at feedback@time.com.

I went to find out the journal and the research that led to that Ventures Africa assertion and this is it (the summary)

Genetic structure in four West African population groups

Abstract
Background

Africa contains the most genetically divergent group of continental populations and several studies have reported that African populations show a high degree of population stratification. In this regard, it is important to investigate the potential for population genetic structure or stratification in genetic epidemiology studies involving multiple African populations. The presences of genetic sub-structure, if not properly accounted for, have been reported to lead to spurious association between a putative risk allele and a disease. Within the context of the Africa America Diabetes Mellitus (AADM) Study (a genetic epidemiologic study of type 2 diabetes mellitus in West Africa), we have investigated population structure or stratification in four ethnic groups in two countries (Akan and Gaa-Adangbe from Ghana, Yoruba and Igbo from Nigeria) using data from 372 autosomal microsatellite loci typed in 493 unrelated persons (986 chromosomes).

Results

There was no significant population genetic structure in the overall sample. The smallest probability is associated with an inferred cluster of 1 and little of the posterior probability is associated with a higher number of inferred clusters. The distribution of members of the sample to inferred clusters is consistent with this finding; roughly the same proportion of individuals from each group is assigned to each cluster with little variation between the ethnic groups. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) showed that the between-population component of genetic variance is less than 0.1% in contrast to 99.91% for the within population component. Pair-wise genetic distances between the four ethnic groups were also very similar. Nonetheless, the small between-population genetic variance was sufficient to distinguish the two Ghanaian groups from the two Nigerian groups.

Conclusion

There was little evidence for significant population substructure in the four major West African ethnic groups represented in the AADM study sample. Ethnicity apparently did not introduce differential allele frequencies that may affect analysis and interpretation of linkage and association studies. These findings, although not entirely surprising given the geographical proximity of these groups, provide important insights into the genetic relationships between the ethnic groups studied and confirm previous results that showed close genetic relationship between most studied West African groups.

It should be clear that the original article on Ventures Africa is nothing but another deliberate attempt at twisting facts for whatever purposes. I wonder when Nigerians or is it human beings will stop such acts.

Well, I am bringing up the original study so Nairalanders can judge whether that was what the researchers which Ventures Africa quoted actually said.

Culture / Study Finds That The Yoruba Are Genetically 99.9 Percent Igbo by NigeriaToday: 11:30pm On Jun 17, 2016
I first saw this on http://fyi.com.ng, and followed to read the full news on Ventures Africa

Four of the major coastal tribes of Western Africa: the Yoruba, Igbo, Akan and the Gaa-Adangbe are dissimilar at a glance and evidently geographic neighbours, but very closely related, if examined in detail at the genetic level.

Several studies have been employed over the years, with findings bringing up linkages of genetic similarity between differing regional ethnic groups. One in particular, conducted by Adebowale Adeyemo, Guanjie Chen, Yuanxiu Chen, the National Human Genome Centre and Howard University, and Charles Rotimi of the University of Ibadan provided results indicating the genetic similarities between the four major West African ethnic groups.

Their findings further indicated surprising genetic variance within groups, but almost none across groups, similar to the closeness of human genetics across races, showing more range within than without.

According to this landmark study there was 99.9 percent within-population variance, the between-population variance was less than 0.1 percent. This means that Yorubas, Igbos, Gaa and Akan are 99.9 percent similar, while within each of the groups there are variations/differences between individuals as high as 99 percent i.e. One Igbo may be 99 percent genetically different from another Igbo, or one Yoruba person to another.

It is important to remember that these groups were not initially split by national borders; prior to the European division of the continent, these ethnic peoples traded, migrated and wedded as the times permitted, allowing apparent regional and national mixtures that remain evident in modern day genetic analyses of some Yoruba and Igbo individuals.

Race and ethnicity are considered to be related concepts. Ethnicity is often assumed to be somewhat more of a cultural identity of a group, often based on shared ancestry, language and cultural tradition, while race is assumed to be strictly a biological classification, based on genetic materials and bone structure. Ethnicity is often used synonymously with ambiguous terms such as nation or people, depending on which source of group identity is emphasized to define membership, the following types of (often mutually overlapping) groups are:

Ethno-linguistic, emphasizing shared language, dialect or script — example: Hausa.
Ethno-national, emphasizing a shared polity or sense of national identity — example: Nigerian.
Ethno-racial, emphasizing shared physical appearance based on genetic origins — example: African-American.
Ethno-regional, emphasizing a distinct local sense of belonging stemming from relative geographic isolation — example: South Islanders.
Ethno-religious, emphasizing shared affiliation with a particular religion, denomination or sect — example: Christians.

Also worthy of note is the shared Volta-Niger root languages, Yoruba and Igbo languages belong to the same family (YEAI branch), showing the common start of the diverse languages spoken by these ethnicities.

Consequently, barring the inclusion of culture, tribal affiliation and nationality, it could be said that the the Yorubas, the Igbos, the Akans and the Gaa-Adangbes are but a people spread over a wide area with different ways of life. Thus discrediting any claim of a unique Yoruba “race” or a genetically insured Igbo ethnicity often employed by politicians and traditional rulers in rhetorics and propaganda messages.

The reality, however, is the hampered economic strength of a not truly united front, with success delayed continually by the lack of pan-African sentiments on the part of the leadership, and poor economic decisions taken in an imperialist system. This is not to revile the revered skin deep differences in each group’s cultural development, but serves to indicate and rejoice in the underlying sameness of what appears ‘not’ to be.

A body does not fight itself. These kinds of research serve as a balm to the much divided heart of the ethnically-concerned West African, and to the African at large: one root, many branches; united by blood if not spirit.

Africa: Two Weeks Until Africa Runs Out of Leading Anti-Venom

Lots of people get bitten by snakes in Africa. If they reach medical help in time, many are treated with Fav-Afrique – an all-purpose anti-venom that can counteract bites from 10 of the continent’s most dangerous snakes. But all remaining stocks of FAV-Afrique will expire at the end of June, and no one is making any new supplies. By SIMON ALLISON.

Earlier this month Pakistan's Council of Islamic Ideology made a recommendation saying that a man could "lightly" beat his wife.

Although not legally binding, the proposal sparked outrage in Pakistan.

Campaigners say that at a time when violence against women is rampant in Pakistani society this so-called women's protection bill encourages men to abuse their wives.
Shaimaa Khalil spoke to the head of the council, to ask him why he had made such a proposal.

Crime / Convicted Fraudster Tina Beloveth Powerful: 'i'll Be Nigerian President' by NigeriaToday: 1:24pm On Jun 11, 2016
A convicted fraudster on the run from British authorities has posted Facebook messages claiming she wants to be the first female president of Nigeria.

Tina Beloveth Powerful said she would lobby "my Facebook friends," President Obama, Michelle Obama and David Cameron for support.
Powerful, 48, skipped bail ten months ago after being found guilty of running a bogus business school. Thames Valley Police said an arrest warrant for her was outstanding.

Powerful, thought to be living in Nigeria, was found guilty of fraud and false advertising in July 2015, but went on the run prior to being sentenced.
The case related to her Milton Keynes-based Everest School of Transformational Management.

'Nursing this feeling'
Her Facebook page suggests she has returned to teaching, with one post saying she is "on my leadership training mission".
And a recent post headlined "women leadership" talks about women becoming presidents of their countries. In it, Powerful wrote: "I desire most unreservedly to become the first Nigerian female president sooner than later. I have been nursing this feeling since my mama born me."

She added: "I strongly believe that my Facebook friends, President Obama and Mitchell (sic) Obama, my long-time outstanding friends, Rt. Hon. David Cameron my allied and host of other powerful women and civilized men nationally and internationally will support me massively."
Powerful had offered courses and degrees she did not have the correct accreditation for and advertised facilities that did not exist, including a library.

The BBC discovered she formed another business school in Bedford while on trial, but later flew back to her native country following a death in the family.

So are you teaching Nigerians how to blog.... Or how to use blogger.. Because they are two different things

Agreed they are two different things, but we have explained it in https://writersfor..com.ng/p/writersforblogspotcom.html

Writers for is a training that helps address these issues.

When Writers for trains you, you will understand
What blogging is about
How to use blogging platforms
Managing a blog
Writing good content
Writing per keyword
Promoting your blog

So we are doing the two and more. Class 1 which is the NL thread dealt with getting and setting up a Blogger account. Class 2 was mainly on blogging. Class 3 will contain information about structuring blog posts, Class 4 will continue with the features of Blogger we have used so far.

So here is our scheme of things - our major business is to train people to blog, don't forget. So we would look at topics related to our objective.

1. Write about what is a blog
2. About how to start a blog
3. How to create a blog
4. How to start a blog for free
5. How to blog in Nigeria
6. How to start a blog and make money
7. What is a blog
8. .com.ng and Wordpress

Topics 1 - 8 related to blogging but we can do better. So let's find out what people are looking for in our main focus - learning.

9. Learn how to blog *

Now what is the next thing to do? The next thing to do is to write or to go find some content somewhere. Now this is where another rule should be laid down. Never copy and paste. Do not do it for any reason. The day you copy and paste articles or even ideas consider yourself no longer a blogger.

We continue with the training session after a hour break.

There is a page and no post yet. We want to post a blog article. What should we write about? While we can write about anything, we would rather not waste our time and our space writing about a topic that no one is searching for.

How do we know what people are searching for?

This is our time to lay the rules clearly - the failure of a blog starts from blogging something that no one is searching for. The second cause of failure is not promoting the blog after you have clearly fouled rule number 1.

This is where we will start the first set of topics on writersfor. from - Google.

See the screenshot here.

Finally this is what the efforts of this session has given us.

I can tell you that you can easily setup a blog if you have been using the Internet regularly for years. It is not hard to do it. We've shown you all the screenshots of the various steps. Study the screens and then go create a blog now. The next session will see us start the blogging proper.

Good you are here at the end of a long series of screenshots. You want to find out about me? Send me mail at fadingmail-chapta.yahoo.com.
