@thekrafter, i've not seen a gal using linux b4, so i'm curious. |
@Rhodalyn,do you use linux? |
@Rhodalyn,what's funny? |
wait, are u saying fedora core 5 is 6 cds and not four? |
@seun, could you pls stop posting census spams into ma email?Thanks in advance. |
@seun, i don't understand why? whenever i type g-u-ys, it changes to boys. what's up with that? i beg o do something sharp sharp. |
openOffice.org 2.0 is now my best document editor. i find it more stable and comfortable to use than MSWord. It native file format is .odt, but it can save as other extensions included MSword .doc format. so i ve no problem of interoperating system compartibility. Amarok threw me off balance, like two days ago when i discover the amazing lyric feature. it easily connect to the internet and downloaded the lyrics to my songs! i don't have to start looking for web pages for my lyrics, amarok does it all!. I repect this open source guys. With a tinkle it updated all my albumart pictures. Haven't discover much about the new core 5, bt i'm yet too.Any one who has should please share the new features in fedora core 5. i love fedora |

i'm currently using the cover manager in amarok to download the album cover for my mp3s. the thing works like a charm! |
www.kde-look.org download dekorator 0.9.9 and crystal dekorator theme. |
@thekrafter, no i'm a kde person. i don't like gnome. Amarok works better with kde than gnome. I have my desktop enhanced by compiling crystal dekorator, here is the screenshot. note the transparent border of the windows.
|
I made too great discovery on linux desktop theming i wish to share; firstly, i downloaded the source package for the crystal (0.99) dekorator theme and compiled it. wow! i was tripped. It 's the best theme i've ever used. try it out. i ll paste my screen shot tomorrow. Again, to windows love, you can enjoy your favorite windows fonts on linux, by importing them to linux. How? it's easy. Go to your KDE control panel, system adminsration, font intaller. Then specify the directory of the windows fonts. the linux font installer automatically import your windows fonts into linux and make them usable on the fly! I ve mstruefont, georgia fonts imported to my fedora this way. L8a guys! i love fedora |
This is my screenshot with amarok running
|
Firstly, let me start with the multimedia playback.hmm , okay audio i use amarok and xmms. why? They look real and have good font ends. only that? Of course not! I ve a gstreamer-mp3 pluggin installed on my amarok and it can now play mp3. Bt wma, hell no for now.That's where my xmms comes in. my xmms has a wma pluggin and i can play wma. The major difference between xmms and amarok is that, amarok has a library manager, bt xmms doesn't. Got to answer this phone call. brb. |
I'm around guys!When i started this thread what i discussed mostly was distros and server configuration. i know i left some topics uncompleted:pardon me. But i did like to progress to desktop appreciation for the sake of newbie. Here i ll list lots of windows alternative programs and discuss how to use them. I'm an Engineering student so the engineers will enjoy this better. To start with i use KDE desktop-my recent desktop theming is shown earlier. I love KDE. That aside, bt not forgetting that some packages works fine and better on KDE than GNOME(don't like it). Don't mind my sentiment. Further more, many of the packages are source code, so dear newbie, get ready to upgrade your gcc compiler, compile codes and solve dependencies issues. Don't worry, i'm make the dependencies 'wahala' easy. Be rite back. |
i owe appologies to the mail senders of whom i've not been able to reply. i've been busy of late, and moreover i'm ve been redesigning the circuit diagram with EAGLE software and ktechlab. the diagram is large and in seven modules. i've succeeded in putting them together as whole circuit(Thanks to EAGLE). Again, i've to do lots of explanation of how everything works and that's part of the delay. The circuit works impressively fine! And i'm planing on going commercial with it. First, i want to setup my own domain and post everything their. For the mean time, i would advice intrested nairaland to learn how to use EAGLE software on Linux. It amazing. L8a. |
Does your fedora look like these? This is my recent Fedora core 4 desktop. I'm using Qt curce style, dekorator,linspire-clear theme, vista icon, and a xmms skin i ported from winamp site. i love theming my desktop. i'm working on a customized desktop for most of my linux installation.

WOW! I've really succeed in building my own 1000VA ups from scratch. Being a student of Elect/Elect i resulted in learning the basics of inverter and bang!! successfully designed and constructed my own fully functional UPS. Thanks to the book: Art of Electronic. The student manual was pretty very helpful. The UPS spec are: 1000VA, 12V, 100AH lead-acid battery powered, battery charging ciruitry with low battery/over charging cut-off ckt, alarm ckt, change over module, voltage level bar display,surge and sag protection, overload protection and MOSFET powered. The output waveform is a square wave, anyway that's would serve me since i'm not planing of using it for reactive loads. Circuit diagram? . or contact @ , No spams please. |
Thanks chxta. Actually i can design a UPS circuit on my own, which will take me a while and i don't have that time now. that's why i just want a ready-made one from anyone. By 1000VA i mean the power output of the transformer at the inverter end. this simply mean Power = IV , and if power required is 1000VA or watt. mathematically, 1000=I x 230 I =4.3 appr. 5 Amp For a transformer power input = power output. so i need an inverter circuit that can power such a transformer. Again i want to believe that a zener diode circuit must exit at the transformer output to limit/regulate the amount of current drawn by the load. Thanks in advance |
I'm in need of a 1000VA (1kVA) UPS circuit diagram. The required output at the inverter is 220/230V @60Hz. Basically, let me say i need an inverted circuit diagram with an output power of 1000VA. thanks in advance |
Anyhow, the 64mb has been work perfectly so what's ma problem. think i'm okay with it. |
Happy New year guys! Has anyone used Fedora core 5? and i need to know what's up with kernel 2.6.15. I resently formatted my LG 256MB flash drive and it became 64MB. Any help from the house? |
Thanks chxta! someone in the family just showed love. God loves you too man! i love fedora core 4 |
damn! have been away for almost a month or more now and no nairaland member seem to give a damn. What a nairaland family! Anyway, i've been away for good, have been doing lot of reading to sharpen my Linux 'skills'. And again, i've resumed school for my final year (500 level) so i hardly have time to browse like i do at home. But i'm a little disappointed the tread hasn't gone far, nobody has posted their new Linux desktop screenshots, nobody has asked any question concerning Linux related problems...nobody has shared their recent development or finding on Linux. oh! Let me share mine. i just discovered the dd (data duplicator command). with dd you can create iso images without any stress like this dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/home/Iso/<name_of_image.iso> the command is straight forward so i don't have to explain the terms. this command creates the iso image of all the data on the cdrom drive onto the hard disk you can mount the image and access it as if i were a cdrom like this mount -t iso9660 -o "loop" <image_name> <output_mount_directory> This is how the command works, mount is the command -t is meant to specify a file system type which is iso9660. i don't know what the loop does but i have to include it before it works . don't mind me. someone should please find out and let me know please.note makesure the output_mount_directory exists. also the /home/Iso/ directory must exit. That's that next i will share how to have more than one ip address assigned to a single network interface card in linux. this means i can assign more than one ip address, say 3 or 4 to a single NIC say eth0 in linux and all the ip addresses will be recorgnized. this is done by creating multiple interfaces like eth0:1, eth0:2 and so on. Also, i will like to explain alias command, to avoid typing long commands always u can do alias of the command like this: alias mountcd="mount /mnt/cdrom" so when you type mountcd, your cdrom is mounted. see ya later. |
IAH:I'll try this today and give a feedback.. I hope I'll enjoy it ![]() |
@anton, let see if this answer ur question anyway. your mbr is lost when u reinstall DOS or windows after installing linux. your /etc/lilo.conf files should look like this after dual boot with windows; boot=/dev/hda map=/boot/map install=/boot/boot.b compact prompt timeout=50 image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.0.36 label=linux root=/dev/hda2 read-only other=/dev/hda1 label=win boot=/dev/hda: INTERPRETATION; your windows is installed in the first partition of ur first hdd =/dev/hda1 while knoppix goes to /dev/hda2 so study ur partition and make appropriate changes. So first, boot up the knoppix linux using the live-cd and launch the konsole. Unlike grub, to apply changes to lilo u must run lilo as a super-user as [anto@anton]$ su [anto@anton]$password: type ur password for root [root@anton]$ now do lilo -v as [root@anton]/sbin/lilo -v you should get this response : Added linux * Added win your lilo should appear after this. u can uninstall lilo by doing /sbin/lilo -u or boot up ur system using window98 startup disk and at the command prompt type fdisk /mbr hope this answers ur question. good luck. i love fedora core4 |
@anton, can u make ur question simpler and more direct. knoppix is debian base when fully installed on the hdd(hope u know that) it only function as knoppix when run as a live cd . i just downloaded the lastest knoppix 4.0.2. if i understand ur question i might be of any help. i love fedora core4 |
my experience with computer started with win98se. i love toying with the registry then! i hate xp, though i have it dual booted with my linux. i rarely use the winxp, except with my sony ericsson p900 connectivity. my problem with winxp stopped when i stopped using it. i use fedora linux for all my stuffs, documentation, movie, video etc. i'm currently working on a linux distro that can be recommended for cyber cafes along with timer on linux box(got one already). Klax based on slackware is a distro i'm looking into. There's no way u can use winxp within two months without reinstallation. it's speed degrades with time and crashes when used too often. Win98se is light, like 190mb after installation. i can remember i used to install win98 on an old 689mb hard disk. i stll end up having 150mb free after installing office 97, acrobat 4,and adding some few mp3s! waz fun then! winxp memmory management is very poor. Give win98se a 10hdd space and 128mb and it will start flying! that's ma view. |
I doubt if u can get it like that. The linux distros that u get easily in the computer village are , Redhat 9.0, mandrake 8 and ubuntu. I m afraid u might have to download it from the net. I actually have clark connect 2.1 and the latest 3.1 home edition, which i got both from the net. Clark connect is mostly used because of it imbedded bandwidth manager. i ve been working with clarkconnect linux for years now because it's based on redhat (fedora core). wish u luck on getting one.wish i can help u. Other linux distros at my disposal are: Fedora core 4(4 cds + 1 optional CD of my compiled utilities and updates) *this is the one i use basically, second fasted linux i've used* PcLinuxOS 9.0 (live CD) PcLinuxOS 9.1 (live CD) *too heavy for my p3 800Mhz* MepisLite 3.3.2 (still downloading 66%) Slax (live CD) *based on slackware, i love it* Klax (live CD) *also based on slackware, just 190Mb or so with nice kde desktop and needed programes* Mandrake 10.0 official (3 cds) *fastest linux i've ever used* Clarkconnect home edition 3.1 (1 CD) ipcop (not tested yet) Knoppix (kernel 2.4) *debian based, so i had to drop it. useful during my learning days* other distros which i ve used but have disposed off; Berry linux (live CD) *based on fedora core 3* Amarok live Cd * based on core 3* Suse 9.1 (5 cds) *nice, don't use it much* Simply MEPIS (live CD) *very good live CD, missed it* Mandriva 2006 *good, but tired of automations* symphony *nice customized desktop* slynux *not bad, met the author online too* BeatrIX ELX MCNLive *couldn't install it on my hdd *i preach fedora core 4. |
