in this course, i won't forget making mention of tweaking windows registry so it can access and browse file on a linux system. by default windows can't access a linux system on the network even after configuring samba. it only sees the linux system as an icon in mynetworkplaces. this is a windows fault and has to be tweaked.

smbuser

This is where you map your linux user to a windows user or other linux user on another linux box.
eg a user on KANOTIX is jogego1 , jogego2 on PROMEPIS, and jogego3 on WINDOWS. ( note i'm bringing windows in now)

on KANOTIX do

jogego1 = jogego2

on PROMEPIS do

jogego2 = jogego1

for interested windoz user do

linuxusername = jogego3windoz username

on the window system , navigate to
controlpanel - useraccount - then click on jogego3 account name.
Select Manage Network password from the side plane, then do

Server name = LINUX SERVER NAME
User name = LINUX\jogego1
ComputersRe: Linux or Windows Operating System? by Niggy(op): 6:56pm On Jul 23, 2005
@jogego,here we go:
on your promepis

lmhosts
here you map your ipaddress to system host name eg
192.168.0.1 = KANOTIX system name

on your kanotix
192.168.0.2 = PROMEPIS system name

your smb consults the lmhosts file to do it's name-resolution.
the ipaddress here is a class c ipaddress which have a range of 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255/24 i want to believe u understand ipaddressing and subnetting. i love subneting calculations so much that......oops! guess i'm deviating.
if you need help with ipaddressing let me know. you can also edit your /etc/hosts file manually to map ipaddresses.

fedora core 4 runs smoothly on my viao sony labtop too.
jogego you ve to do it on both distros, so you start with one at a time. i shall continue shortly.
i'm trying to update my gcc to gcc 4.0.1 and get some other vital updates too.
ComputersRe: Linux or Windows Operating System? by Niggy(op): 9:54am On Jul 23, 2005
@jogego,
this are the things needed to configure samba:
samba package
smb daemon (up and running) and,
a linux text editor (i like vi)
a bottle of maltonic drink.
i'm a redhat user so i don't know if this commands are supported by your debian based kanotix

i'm sure you know how to get and install the samba package(i believe it should come with kanotix and promepis). so to chk if the samba daemon is running go to konsole,root and do

chkconfig --list | grep smb
then see if the run-levels 2345 are on
if off , do this

chkconfig --level 2345 smb on

you can do this via GUI also on your distro

you can now restart the smb daemon by doing

/etc/init.d/smb restart

there are 4 main files in your /etc/samba/ directory
lmhosts, smbpasswd, smb.config smbusers

sipping drink
like to see your response before i continue.
ComputersRe: Linux or Windows Operating System? by Niggy(op): 9:35am On Jul 23, 2005
there's one solution i got to a very common problem in fedora core 4 so i like to share it
it's a compile error message. i ve read many peoples report of this bug.
an error message that says the gcc 4.0 has bug and cannot compile is common during compile, so for a long time i couldn't compile any programm under my fedora core 4 which was very annoying.
a common solution was to install the compact-lib that allows you to make use of the previous release gcc32 to compile. i did this but only to be faced with compiler can locate libXext error message. i did alot of google search and forum consult for the solution but to no avail not knowing that wetin dey find for sokoto dey my sokoto pocket.
i resolved to a study of the packaging of the fedora distro which warrant me to reinstall my fedora
here i chose the detail subpackage listing and i found all the libraries required to make gcc work, i then chked all.
that ws it!
i could compile now.
./configure
make
su root(pw required)
make install
make clean
all works fine

to nairaland linux newbie i'm planning on starting a mini tutorial series on
using linux
importance and future of linux
which distro is good for newbies
how to make ur linux look and work like windows XP and
configuring linux based on my findings.

i ll like to make this as simple as possible in my own terms so even a 10year old baby ll know what we re talkin about.
may linux be with you

i love configuring samba,but i've not used it to print, bt it's possible. so let me tell u au i alway configure my samba. i love the konsole mode, if u don't mind?

@hot-angel, au are you?
ComputersRe: Microsoft Windows Vista (formerly "Longhorn") by Niggy(op): 11:29am On Jul 22, 2005
@rufaai, well i must say u are under-informed about longhorn. longhorn is not offically released but u can get it(illegal), more precisely i got it. the longhorn transformation themes just gives u a feel of longhorn not longhorn and it's not really close to the real longhorn look. ive used both so i know what's up! also with the trans theme ur system becomes unstable and if u don't know how to go around the installation u end up crashing ur system . the installation is not as easy as normal theme installation. though readme is provided, au may people read the readme before proceeding with an installation. just be careful when installing the trans theme, even the theme creator warns u also, he claim not to be responsible for crash or lost of data,so idid going to say BACK UP YOUR DATA!
the first time i tried the version 9 my system crashed! i hd to do a reinstallation and master the instalation b4 proceeding and i must say again, it does n't have the full theme of longhorn. try long horn itself and see what 'm saying.
longhorn isnot a new release as it seems, they ve been at it since 2002. and many versions have been out, the present iscode 5048 or so.
i ve a p2p group that shares softwares. here i got the longhorn prerelease, even the macintosh os which is claimed not to be downloadable is available(illegal), mandriva 2006, and even longhorn 2006(illegal).
rufaai, try and be updated
pls note the illegal stressed!

ComputersRe: Linux or Windows Operating System? by Niggy(op): 9:01am On Jul 20, 2005
@kazey, who is converting who? you are missin lots out. i have windows on my system and i've once been a long time windows user. i like learning but during my time of being with windows i didn't make much progress. unlike now, with linux i'm moving at rocket speed. just wait till you see my own operating system,okay?
everyone knows windows has flaws which could cost you alot if you are using it for businesses. okay, i can remember the cyber cafes once were using internet explorer as there default browsers but now they 've all changed to firefox which is a linux open source programm. dt's wht we are saying windows is good bt could have been better if it'sopen source.
let me tell you this windows longhorn of a thing, microsoft has been on it since 2002, imagine! still have not come out with a stable version, whereas linux is moving from one development stage to another. do you know that after installing linux on your hard disk you can also create your own customized linux from it and it's all urs, just like that!
linux has one development now, you can be running the operating system from a CD while doing your hard disk installation, wow! linux is great.
au many foreign based tech films have y seen where windows is displaced, none! it's either mac or linux.
most govt enterprise uses linux, believe me. Go to windows forums, microsoft too admit there windows xp has flaws so what are you saying man. linux owns the future of os.
now i understand how to develop an operating system despite not being a programmer and i'm planning to build one. this is the work of open source.
open source means your programme script is make available for others to study and use while you still retain the copywrite. kool. bill gate couldn't hav develped windows if the script for dos wasn't made available to him by IBM!

Linux livecd to the rescue?

Porn site virus and spyware in hdd mbr requires fdisk and many hours of reinstall the operating system. While preloaded hdd has its appeal, it still takes hours to take apart the computer and screw in the hdd. Firewalls are not perfect. Linux livecd only takes a few minutes to load and operate all your embedded spftware right away. Nothing ever to corrupt.

enjoy!

Microsoft warns of software flaws in Windows
Submitted by srlinuxx on Wed, 07/13/2005 - 02:30. M$

Microsoft Corp. warned users on Tuesday of three new security flaws in its Windows and Word software. and issued patches to fix the flaws, which could allow attackers to take over a computer system.

All three of the "critical"-rated security patches could potentially allow an attacker to take control of a personal computer and use it to steal data or launch other attacks, said Stephen Toulouse, a manager at Microsoft's Security Response Center.

"The key thing is really that we want to make people understand the risk with these flaws and that they enable automatic updates," said Toulouse, referring to a feature in Windows that downloads and installs the software patches automatically.

Two of the flaws are related to imaging technology used by Windows, which could potentially allow an attacker to take control of a system simply by having the user view a digital image that contains software code that exploits the flaw, which could be installed on a computer without the user's knowledge.

"Simply by viewing one of these malicious images you can become infected with anything from adware and spyware to any other suspicious code," said Oliver Friedrichs, senior manager at Symantec Corp.'s Security Response Center.

Ain't anyone just tired of this monthly update patches from flawful windows!

still interested in windowshuh?? Then read this;

Microsoft is developing a patch for a newly discovered security flaw in versions of Windows XP which poses a particular threat to computers running XP Media Center edition.

The flaw is in Windows Remote Desktop Services (RDS) and could allow a hacker to cause a computer to crash repeatedly by sending specially crafted data packets.

"Our investigation has determined that this is limited to a denial of service attack, so an attacker could not use this vulnerability to take complete control of a system," said Microsoft in a security advisory.

The user who discovered the vulnerability, security researcher Tom Ferris (aka 'badpack3t'), claims that he alerted Microsoft to the problem in May. The company told him that a patch would be released on 9 August as part of the usual monthly cycle.

"I have been working with Microsoft to get a patch out for this," said Ferris. "Microsoft told me the patch was going to be released in August. We know it's only a DoS [denial of service attack], which is kind of boring, so this is why we decided to report it to Microsoft."

As for me ain't not interested in windows!

ComputersRe: Linux or Windows Operating System? by Niggy(op): 8:28am On Jul 18, 2005
@jogego, i installed ubuntu yesterday, with dat i was having windowsxp , fedora core 4 n the ubuntu 5.04 on my hda. each time i tried to boot into my fedoracore i get a kernel panic error message. i had to sit down to figure out what was causing this after enough studing i reallized dat my fedora core and ubuntu linux were marked /(root).
so my fedora kernel is getting confused at boot time. i resolved this by removing the ubuntu partition. now jogego, must this be so. i've dual-booted many linux distro (slax, klax,berrylinux,mepis,amarok live,mandriva, pclinuxos, knoppix) along with my fedora core, so why the error with ubuntu? any idea?
ComputersRe: Microsoft Windows Vista (formerly "Longhorn") by Niggy(op): 4:17pm On Jul 15, 2005
there is this question concerning the GUI of longhorn compared to XP. i notice they ve reduced the color brightness of the gui which sucks up some system resources. huh dt's wise. Much of the system resources n memory are required to have a good windows xp GUI interface to run smooth.
There are many features formerly proposed to be in the longhorn which are now being dropped in order to make the system stable and faster. you can read more new online. you can hv a look at some some screenshots here.

fedora core 4 is kde 3.4.0 n kernel 2.6.11-1. with yum i installed a new kernel 2.6.12,kde 3.4.1 and other updates online within 20 minutes. whreas sp2 take 1hr on my windws xp which is even more than the time it takes me to install windoze xp itself.

ComputersRe: Screenshots of Our PC Desktops by Niggy(m): 3:17pm On Jul 14, 2005
@jogego, please this kazey needs to be recued from too much of windoze.
@kazey, it's a pity you ve to use many registry fix n tweak  by private companies writen for windoze to stabilize your windows despite your windoze claiming to be the best. That's the problem!
Windows needs open source help but yet they are adamant. They ripe you of your money for their incompetency. Windows SP2 firewall now suffers serious intruding from hacker n viruses.
Mozilla is a linux native(made) internet browser, surprised!
No antivirus in linux, spy attack no fear of antivirus update.
Each time i boot my system to linux,i feel secure n free. but for windows, i first have to do an antivirus updt n chk for available window update patch which are never guaranteed to work. i ve windows installed on my system too mainly b'because of my p900 n each time i'm in windows i prefer disabling my internet connection( safest remedy against online viruses).
Whenever my windoze suffer a crash it takes me about three days to do the full installation( installin windows, antiviruses, ms office,etc. whreas my linux will be up within 1hr! with all the full software installed.
linux file system is too tight dt antiviruses find it difficult to spread even if they gets in. how?
let me gist you, linux has file archi that stores files securely eg when you install mplayer. the main program for the software goes into the root directory which is not accessible to any user. only the configure files are stored in the users home directory. so even if a virus attack linux only the user inuse can be affected this can then be corrected by deleting the user n recreatin it.actually there are a few antivirus writen for linux just for the sake of software development. there was a time i installed bitdefender for linux, bt  i never used it or really needed it.
linux also has a better memory management than windows which is what a software is all abut not the fancy interface. now linux has nice interfaces n windows managers. people are use to kde or gnome bt there are others like enlightment, fluxbox, blackbox. try them out n enjoy the feel of themes n transparency like the one you see in this hi-tech movies computer screen. believe me..i've used them. jogego is a kanotix user n he knows what i'm sayin here( jogego, any addition or subtraction is welcomed) i've used many linux distros n can talk about them bt i'm with fedora core 4 presently. i'm a redhat native man,so i stick to distros that has redhat foundtion like pclinuxos, mandrake, fedora core.
i've nver said you should leave windws bt in my own case i  m with linux which has given me all i needed in computer.
there are many nice windows programes but they are for sale so you might end up not enjoyin them. that;s why thre are illegalcracks and keygens. on my windws i use bitdefender prof 8 antivirus which i end up crackin. n many other softwares like that.
i'm with linux n forever will be. Amen
