@samir101ng
Well well, mr samir101ng, I own a GT and it is LOCKED , I repeat LOCKED to etisalat n/w. Immediately you insert another n/w sim maybe a mtn, it ask you for an unlock code which etisalat did not provide you with.
If you dnt believe, get one from their Allen avenue shop, which is where I got mine, and try.
Or maybe they sell an unlocked brand in their other shops, dont know. Bt as far as the one i purchased from their allen shop ikeja, it is LOCKED.

Yeah the samsung galaxy tab is locked to etisalat network. But do the math with the shot below.

I use Core 6, hoping to lay my hands on core 8 soon.
I m curious too about linux certifications but seems they are not emphasised or something. I think someone with this info should say something.
ComputersRe: Is Vista Really A 3d Os? by Niggy(op): 9:31am On Dec 06, 2007
Thanks bigrovar, u are a real advocate of linux.
This is a life experience of windows for me about a month ago. I had a database project to manage. i provided the company with a linux database server while they came with 5 other computer system running windows OS. Two were running Vista, while the other 3 were running xp. after 4 days of database input, 1 of the vista system crashed, and all the xp system go infected with virus.( the notepad virus in circulation like two months ago). The linux server which equally runs a desktop was unshaven. The Director and other staffs were glad, cos a good choice of server OS was made by me. The earlier wanted to use Access on xp for the database project.
This is just a simple example of real time situation on productivity. For now, i still believe windows has a Good GUI interface, but what is a GUI interface when we are talking about Billions of Dollars project. Windows offer supports definitely, but they will demand for unreasonable huge amount of ur precious profit in the name of customer support which the hardware vendors have been made victim of. Windows now have a hook on many hardware vendors and when their customers made a complain on the OS, windows cunningly refer them to the hardware vendor. That's why DEL wants to break out of the spell.
Linux for me have always been a good choice.

Off the thread, does anyone has fedora core 8 pls.
ComputersRe: Is Vista Really A 3d Os? by Niggy(op): 11:44am On Dec 05, 2007
@naijafan huh Beryl comes with fedora core 7, compiz equally comes with fedora core 6. Beryl is available in core 6 extra repo. And i know many other distros have beryl, compiz or compiz-fusion pre-installed, so what is your point? You understand little about 3D obviously. You just defined 3D correctly and u are equally criticizing your definition. Everything in a computer is never real. They are bits of 0 and 1, so for u to accomplished a 3D effect u ve to play on images. It is simple logic. Enough of this attack please. just post facts concerning the topic, ok?
ComputersRe: Is Vista Really A 3d Os? by Niggy(op): 10:11am On Dec 05, 2007
hey naijafan, slow down man. Is the new second pic 3D enough for you. I pretty understand dat u know little in the world of linux or Window OS. This thread is not for argument sake, just little comparism of fact. It's for Linux Geeks and Windows Admins.
ComputersIs Vista Really A 3d Os? by Niggy(op): 3:48pm On Dec 04, 2007
I just kept wondering if M$ Vista is really a 3D OS. I use Beryl on my KDE Desktop running on Fedora core 6. I could feel the 3D, composite rendering, transparency etc and several other effects. But i've never really noticed any 3D or animated effect on my dual booted Vista Ultimate. Or am i missing something in what M$ called 3D in Vista.

This is beryl on fc6 running on my 1G RAM, 1.86Ghz laptop. Note the transparency, glass ,glossy effect in the picture. Beryl has 3D cube rotating effect and lots more. So please what 3D effect can Vista do?

ComputersRe: Red Hat Linux 10.0 by Niggy(m): 11:14am On Sep 07, 2007
Redhat linux is not a thing,
Ubuntu versions are doin a good just recruiting people from windows to linux and also releasin new versions of their distro with latest packages.That's kool. But note dat redhat has a policy which is security. They tend not to give a damn about your multimedia palava, or let me say, they give u an extra repo with limited software. That is redhat for you. With these, they still remain the leading distro, highest capital, security tight and more govt contracts dan ubuntu.
So i did say, just use a linux distro dat u like, have good prospect, more challenging ,security conscious, and suitable for ur professional job.
ComputersRe: Linux or Windows Operating System? by Niggy(op): 9:40am On Aug 31, 2007
@adewaleafolabi,
thanks. Got a little busy with many database projects. I actually missed the days of posting and fast response on this thread, but seems many folks ve gone low too. like jogego. The thread actually drifted so much towards debating/advocating windows or linux (which was actually the threads topic, but not my intention) which happens now not to be my religion. I'm pretty stuck with linux. It makes my computing intricating and challenging. Each time, i get better and the feel is damn pretty good. You know what i'm saying.

I solve problems with my computer now. Gone are the days of OS domination. There's lots to discover with linux. This is a choice actually, and it's taking me places. When i talk about computer, OS and Programming, Windows Gurus, take their writing pads. But what baffles me still is, why they don't want to learn. They just want to login into a computer and start clicking everything clickable, looking for help options and using their shallow computer mines to guess what the next option of possibility to problem click should be.

I don't claim to be a 'G' in computer. But what i do now i do best. Thanks to Torvaldo Linus.

Think i miss great guys like u too. cheers!

@netotse
welcome to linux world.
I was a student in OAU, ife. Elect/Elect Engr.I m currently serving my father land. Might have my Masters in Lag in i don't travel out soon. Maybe i might get to see you in Lag.I stay in Lag anyway.

There's much to learn in linux and it tremendously increase your computer skills while letting you to discover yourself.

I currently work on database design using css2, php & mysql database on solid rock fedora core 6. Hope to start a tutorial on these soon.

ComputersRe: Difference Between Celeron, Centrino And Pentium? by Niggy(m): 1:27pm On Jun 16, 2007
Processor can be categorized into
1. Performance processors
2. Econonic processors
3. Gaming

Pentiums, Centrino, Pentium M ,Core and the rest in this kind are performance rated.
Celeron is an econonic processor. Economic by been cheap.

A processor has the L1 and L2 cache. For celerons the size of the L1 and L2 cache is reduced compared to their speed equivalent pentiums and this is why it's cheap. This is the major difference between a pentium and celeron. Celeron is made from the same architecture pentiums are made from hence they can't radiate more heat or run slower than their pentium speed equivalent. Since it has a smaller L1 and L2 cache, it is not recommended for high end gaming or animation or strong computer works. Though i would work, but don't expect the performance u would ve gotten with a pentium.

Centrino is a brand name by intel. when a laptop has Intel wifi, intel lan, intel Hub and pentium m processor, it is a centrino brand.

I know there is a new brand of celeron, call celeron D. I ve not reviewed that.

I ve used a celeron 2.6Ghz once, and i performed fine. I play Pro Soccer Evolution 6, wolfenstein and other good games without flaw.

I now use a Toshiba satellite pro A 120 with core solo 1.86Ghz processor. wink

ComputersRe: Linux or Windows Operating System? by Niggy(op): 8:27am On Apr 21, 2007
I was tempted to open another thread and title it "linux and laptop", but i think i would fit right under this popular thread.
I got a new laptop, spec:

Toshiba Satellite pro A120
Intel Core sole 1.86Ghz processor
760MB DDR2 RAM
128MB Intel 945GM Express Chipset VGA
40Gig SATA hdd
DVD/CD-rw Ultra High speed
15.4" TFT wide-screen
wifi
100/1000Mb LAN
SD/MMC card slot
3 USB port

i installed fedora core 6 and almost everything worked out-of-the-box except:
1. fedora incorrectly loaded hdc driver for the cdrom. This caused choppy dvd playback and data copy from the cdrom
2. wifi was not detected
3. sd/mmc card slot sometimes detected and sometimes not

Everything else Graphic display, 3D, DRM, sound works fine. Hibernation (suspend to RAM and DIsk).

Solution to problems:
The wifi problem was solved by easily downloading my driver madwifi for Atheros and it works fine now.
The laptop used ICH7 by Intel.

$ lspci | grep -i ide
00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801GBM/GHM (ICH7 Family) Serial ATA

The SATA hard drive is connected to the same hub with the CDrom.
The correct scsi was loaded for the hard drive as sda but incorrectly loaded for my cdrom which is wrongly seen as hdc. This caused reduce or draggy system performance on the laptop which watching dvd or copying file from a disk.This can be checked like this"

$ ls -l /dev/cdrom
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 April 21 07:23 /dev/cdrom -> hdc

To correct this i simply edit my boot loader (grub.conf) and point the kernel to load the correct driver for the cdrom like this:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.20-1.2944.fc6 ro root=LABEL=/1 rhgb quiet combined_mode=libata

i added the combined_mode=libata to the line to tell the kernel that the hard drive and dvd/cdrom are connected to the same SATA hub.
And that's it. Everything started working fine, smooth and fast dvd and copy performance. It's like saying i enabled DMA on the cdrom drive. my cdrom is now seen correctly as scd0 and not hdc.

$ ls -l /dev/cdrom
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 April 21 07:30 /dev/cdrom -> scd0
ComputersRe: Intel Celeron M by Niggy(m): 7:55am On Apr 21, 2007
celeron is called an economic chip(processor) while pentium is performance rated. The main diff between pentium and celeron is the size of the L1 and L2 cache. You can google for the data sheet. Celeron has a less L1 and L2 cache compared to pentium, so the performance is less even if the processor speed for the celeron is higher than the pentium. In other word, cache size is more important than processor speed.
About which one to buy? It depend on what u actually want to use the system for. For basic office use, internet surfing, accounting, document editing/printing, file sharing,video playback,etc celeron is good cost-wise. The extra performance a pentium would have given is not needed for this basic tasks.
If u are a gamer or do video/sound editing, graphic designing, animation, programming etc, u need extra cost and pentium is the right choise.

there is an easy work around to fix your disabled kde applets. open a terminal and type
#kiosksetup

uncheck the "disable kde applets" option.Then logout and login again.
ComputersRe: Dial Up Connection by Niggy(m): 7:30pm On Feb 25, 2007
i can recollect multilinks modem speed to be 115.2kbps. That means the modem has a bandwidth of 115.2kbps. download rate is in kB/s. for a modem, the calculation is 115.2kbps/10 = 11.5kB/s. A good web site will open with 90kbps = 9kB/s .

e.g A file of 400KB will take
400KB / 11.5kB/s = time it takes to download.
But mind u, you ISPs are smarth, they have bandwidth managers so u don't have up to 11.5kB/s.

With dat, you can estimate the number of system you can put on a link.
ComputersLinux Cyber Cafe Timer by Niggy(op): 5:48pm On Feb 25, 2007
I finally came across a linux based timer after a long search.
It's call openkiosk
The server package is called nodeview and installs on kde desktop environment
The client package is called openkiosk and also runs on a kde linux desktop. There is also a client version for windows but it is not free. The linux packages are free.Good! Isn't it.

openkiosk requires BerkeleyDB 4.
When i tried compiling on fc6 i got this error :-ldb-4 not found
so i installed the mandriva 2007 nodeview and libldb-4 rpm version for my fc6. Believe me it worked!

the openkiosk client version compiled without flaws.

Beware! As a security measure, your kde applets for all users are disabled. so if you want it enabled u need kiosktools package.

i ve not explore most of it 's features but i ve comfirmed it working!
I generated tickets and sucessfully login to the linux timer server (nodeview) running on fc6 from a windows client running openkiosk.

My apologies for the earlier post on "word meaning", dat's not me. All the same, i don't see a reason for exchange of personal attacks. Pls if my post has been offensive in any way, my apologies. Let drop this "win/lin" thing and share ideas.
That's the best way i think we should relate.
